Asked for low bald fade transitioning to a 1. Was very specific with what we wanted. What we got was a same length clipper cut all around with no fade and no line up in the front. He (the old barber by the front window) also raised my sons part by almost an inch! My poor teenage son was about to cry afterwards. Pictures show what he got. Will never come back. Not sure how so many folks have given such good reviews. A picture is worth a thousand words in this case. My son is very particular about his hair as most teenagers are and he will now have to grow this out for the next few months to correct the mistakes. Was trying to avoid paying $40 and try this place based on reviews and the $18 price. In this case we unfortunately got what we paid for. My husband was previously going to my hairstylist for his shampoo & haircut. Booking a month in advance, he missed his last appointment. He forgot to Outlook the appointment and this was the last straw! It's happened 3 times sending me into damage control with my hairstylist. After reading Trolly McTroll C.'s review of this place, I bookmark it to send my husband there. He arrives and there is a 2-person wait. He is also mindful of the Yelp reviews to know how the place works. There are 2 barbers working, an older man and a younger man. When it's his turn, the younger man approaches my husband and looks at his hair. My husband briefly describes what he wants. The barber says to him, "Oh yes, you want a #2 with short back and sides." For the life of me, I do not know what this means. My hairstylist would croak if I talked like this to her. The haircut looked very good that day. I withheld my review for a week to see how it would grow out. And it has grown out very nicely with no bizarre strays showing haircut errors. Both barbers have experience in haircutting. My husband used to pay $50 in shampoo & haircut. And now with the haircut being only $11, my husband was ecstatic and left a decent tip. I have been going to Dick's since I was in college at USF (over 20-years now), and my experience there has been fantastic from when I first had my hair cut by Dick, and now for the past 10-years plus by his nephew Francisco. The price is beyond reasonable, the setting calm and low key, and you get a great cut without typically having too long a wait (Saturday mornings being the possible exception). There are typically multiple barbers on duty together, so they are able to handle a good numbers of customers without having to queue up forever. The barbers are all nice, and if you want to chat a lot while in the chair they will chat you up. Personally I prefer my hair cuts to be a calm, restful experience, so with having been a customer for so long, I can practically sit in the chair after saying hello, and close my eyes until the post cut massage begins, and not have to worry about a thing. Just how good has my experience been? So good that as I have moved from the Bay Area to Southern California I still come back to the Bay Area every 3-4 weeks and stop in at Dick's for a cut! I've been to Dick's a couple dozen times. I go back because they are dependable, simple, but most of all good barbers. I still don't know names but I know them as Uncle, Son, & Nephew. They've all given me a cut and they are collectively consistent. Nothing beats the hot foam and barber's blade around the neck, sidburns, & ears. And yes, they do massage your shoulders at the end with the stim-u-lax hand massager. Overall, they provide repeatedly good service for a great price of $11 per person. I suggest going as early in the day as possible; they routinely have a 5-man wait if you go later. PS-I've brought my son (7) to get his hair cut and he loves it. I frickin love this place. Maybe its cuz im a dykey pinay with short hair who likes having really exact & pointy sideburns, but really, i like that its cheap, its not corporate, and its just simple. There can be a wait sometimes and parking is rough on geary on the weekend, but it's worth it. Only here can you get your hair super-lined in a super precise way, because all the pinoys that run the place (who are all family btw) get down with shaving cream and a BLADE to get everything lined just the way you like it. super old school and bad-ass. sure, there's porn lying around, and yes, there's a lot of super old men around at times which is kinda weird, but it's still good. i mean, dang, a haircut is only 11 bucks! Can't say enough good things about this spot. Finding a quality barber is already a huge challenge. Finding a classic no frills barber shop in SF is an even bigger challenge - every barber "shop" is more like a salon with $50+ dollar cuts. This place is a great barbershop. Haircuts here are $12. After getting your haircut, you get a weird hand message on your shoulder. I think the place is ran by a family. I know they all speak Tagalog. The younger guy cut my hair. He was pretty helpful and flexible. been there twice and they "kick ass". It's a family owned business. One of the older barber is Francisco, don't let his strict looking demeanor put you off, he does a mean fade!. The other barbers too are kickin wing! Prepare for a long wait though when you come in late in the afternoon as it gets packed, a sign that they do a mean cut. Another bonus is their open on sundays (better come early if u decide to go on a sunday coz only 1 barber comes in). $11/cut. ++++ They are local professionals! I was introduced to this Barbershop when I was a sophomore in high school (mind you I am a sophomore in college now) and this place has been a wonder. I've gotten cut here numerous times and I can say this place is consistent. The Barbers are Filipino by the way. Francisco, the main guy there who usually has a mean look on his face is actually a chill guy, don't be deceived. He'll talk to you if you talk to him most of the time. There used to be an old Barber there too but he retired and the other ones like Joe (ask about him he's good) are relatively new and come in and out. At this place I was shown different styles from fades to line-ups to anything rather. (I usually got 2 on the sides 3 on top lined up). These barbers do cut the way you want them to AND INCLUDE RAZOR BLADE SHAVES on the neck and sides and old retro styled hand buzzing massages after at the end of your cut. Waiting can be a hassle if you go later in the day, try to go as early as possible and not between 11:30am-1:00pm because they might be at lunch. They don't take appointments. Parking is a hassle so if you're willing to walk park south a couple blocks in the neighborhood otherwise there are parking meter locations in between blocks at 19th and 20th near Geary. These barbers are GOOD, have no doubt. They are customer friendly and they even take care of their location. They recently renovated with new floors and new seats for the waiting lounge. read more

Wanna get Dicked? Dick's has fast become the go-to barber for many of my friends from high school. They are affordable (12$ a cut) and convenient (no appointments). However, due to the increased popularity as of late, expect to wait 15 mins to an hour for a cut. While you wait they have rolling stone, complex, and playboy/maxim for your reading enjoyment. On a side note, i find it funny that all the old guys who get cut there read playboy. I only get cut by the eldest barber or the youngest guy (who works mondays). Both of them do excellent fades, tapers and did well trimming the top of my hair. The only unsatisfactory cuts I've gotten here are from the middle-aged other barber. I would avoid him and wait the extra 15 for the next guy. Go to Dick's if you want a good, cheap cut. read more

The barber could have turned me away, but kindly seated me after I told him I just needed a simple faux hawk and I rushed over as soon as I got off work. Everytime I pay a visit to this shop, it just keeps getting better and better. I just feel so comfortable at this place and the barbers are really chill. I really like the way they line me up and help me feel a lot cleaner and fresher just by having a lot less hair. I have been consistently visiting this shop every month and a half or so since my first review and honestly, if I wasn't such a starving college student, I would be coming here even more frequently! Don't let me drive you to think they're expensive. They are really cheap, and I am just really poor. $12 for a nice smooth cut, which includes nice razor shaves around the edges. It is a rare find to see a barbershop that will charge you only $12 for a haircut. This is not a "get what you pay for" but more of a "I feel like I should pay more." I asked for a faux hawk and line up and got exactly that. I've had the same haircut from all the workers and all cuts have turned out alike. Good consistency. A plus that they remember what I like for going every two weeks. It's family owned and any one of them will help you in a timely manner. You would have to wait your turn in any other barbershop so don't complain here. If you don't want to wait, you have to option to go elsewhere. It's simple. The first time I went here I got something simple - 8 top and 4 sides. It was pretty good since my coworkers complimented how sharp I looked! Now fast forward 4 months when I am in need of a hair cut. Thinking that I could replicate my previous results, I walked in and asked for 8 top and 4 sides. I ended up bald because the barber didn't pay attention to my order. Now my friends and coworkers call me baldy... I'm never coming back to this place again. Like everyone else said, it is a no-nonsense men's haircut spot. I have been to many other places: -The Cutlery ($50) -1512 Barbershop ($35, and usually booked 2-3 weeks out) -Sunset Barber ($18, and the guy's dad sucks at cutting hair) -Westside Cuts ($20, and they usually have a really long wait and can't really scissor cut) Here, they charge $13 for a haircut and they can fade and scissor cut. I haven't gotten a pure scissor cut, but I've been getting a 1 to 2 fade on the sides with a scissor cut on the top and it's come out solid. In fact, these guys are the only ones (besides 1512) to cut my hair without spraying it (I have pretty curly hair) with water. You're supposed to cut hair dry, which surprisingly not many barbers know. I am very pleased with the quality of haircuts here and will pretty much exclusively come here from now on. read more

I've been coming here since I was a kid with my Dad and he came for years before me. It's an old school "man's man" barber shop. Old school shears and clippers, classic barber chairs, warm cream/straight blade for edges and shaves followed by hot towel to soothe the skin, and this hand massage machine for your shoulders and neck when your cut is done. There's a magazine rack with everything from men's health, cars, to mature content. All for $13? There's a sign in sheet by the door for when a wait starts. I see a lot of people complain about the wait. To me, that's not necessarily a bad thing. If you want a good cut, you'll wait for it along with the others that are doing the same. There are always people there lining up on weekends and a steady flow coming in on weekdays. These guys are standing, cutting and going nonstop without food or drink most of the day so when they take a break or something people freak out? Get real. This isn't a chain haircut shop. It's a brick and mortar local business that's been here for years. Don't like it? Don't go back. That's one more open seat for regulars and new patrons alike. Upgrade from Supercuts but it's not Sassoon - and that's a good thing. Sure you wait but everything good in life requires it. No scissor cuts from what I've seen but they're good and efficient with the razors to pretty much all lengths. Don't think I'd come here with a ponytail however. As far as the Dick's vs. Ricks controversy this place is bigger and more comfortable for pretty much the same product - no frills cuts with a straight razor finish and a quick massage. read more

I have recently been dating a girl who insisted I step up my game and go to one of those fancy hip barber shops that serve you bourbon or beer. Only kicker they charge an are and a leg for what I have always believed is a pretty basic service. After a good 5-6 months of spending almost 50$ per haircut I was fed up. I began the search for a new barber using yelp. It was my pleasure to find this little hole in the wall on geary. I had a older latino dude as my barber. He didn't say much but I wasn't really worried about it. Took about 15 minutes and I was done. Haircut was clean. Came with a straight edge touch up around the sides and a quick shoulder massage. Only reason for that missing star was the decor and my barber's demeanor. Neither of these are that big of a deal though and for the price its a steal!! This place is pretty much the bomb. Although this is not the place for in depth, or any depth, conversation, this is exactly where it's beauty lies. Simple, clean, cheap, with a slight taste of "what the fuck do you want" that really drives it home. Everything from the smut and car magazines to the staff who speak in Filipino to each other, to the not so great music selection makes you feel right at home. One thing. If you really want a super clean cut you'll have to be specific and inspect the work at the end. They have no problem touching you up, but sometimes you have to instruct them on the details. All in all great stuff.... oh and that ridiculous massage machine is amazing. The biggest thing to me about any barber shop is the haircut. I got a pretty good haircut. The biggest issue is that it shows off my widows peaks slightly more than I'd like. The price is great; $13! Sure, maybe it would have been perfect if I'd described exactly what I wanted in high detail. But I also don't think customers should be required to know all of the terminology and how to describe it. As a barber you should be pretty familiar with hiding bald spots, though. The service is also meh. I arrived at 11:45 and had to wait in line for 30min, not too bad. But, once you're in the chair, it's definitely not a place where they work on it, let you look, then work on it again. That's usually been my experience; most barbers seem to polish at least a couple areas to perfection after getting your feedback. here, you just tell him in the beginning and he goes for it until he's finished. Hope you like what you got. Haircut was quick, too, which was nice. No doubt it's one of the best non-scissor cuts I've gotten, although I usually request scissor. I can't get an appointment with my regular "beautician" lately, as he likes to call himself (gimme a break) Not to mention that he charges $50 tips included. Granted he washes my hair once before the cut and once after. Down side it takes 1-1.5 hours, which is to much for a guy who wants a decent hair cut. After reading some of the reviews about Dick's I went ahead and followed fellow Yelper's advice and showed up exactly at 8 am. I was first in line, parking was free for the duration of the cut. My barber was not very talkative which was probably good considering I was pretty nervous as soon as I sat down. My barber asked me how I liked my hair cut? I told him that I wanted him to shorten my hair all around.( it was younger of the two guys) Good thing I was warned about those big a$$ scissors, they were unreal! It took him 15-20 minutes including a neck massage. I was pretty satisfied, my girlfriend said she couldn't tell the difference between my old cut and a new one. You know when you're in the barber's chair and he starts doing something and you think "oh no, don't do that!" well this was the exact opposite. Right when I thought I was done, 15 minute fade, face and neck brushed off, cape is undone as if to release me from the chair, what do i feel? I'm being buttoned back up! Where most barbers would have started to ask for your money, Dan (I think) lets his meticulous craftsmanship shine. He faded me up with 4 different clippers, scissors, and finally lined me with warm-shaving cream and straight razor. (Dude, I was thinking, it's only a 12$ haircut.. so I gave him 16). To be honest, its not even what I had in mind but damn if I'm not a sucker for attentive service. I got sick and tired of all the little asian 'salons' in the area and went on yelp and found Dick's. SOOOOO glad I went to this place! It's tiny and looks run down, but the quality for the price is incredible. Walked in, and there were a few people sitting, I though they were waiting but they were barbers and I had a seat immidiately. Told him what I wanted, and I never know how to describe what I want, and the barber was able to run things by me and helped me communicate what I needed. Super friendly staff, and very very quick. Plus, when my hair was looking good, and I thought I was done, they pull out the hot lather and straight razor for the edges. This was awesome, cause I have a hairy ass neck and those little clippers just leave it itchy. For 12 bucks for a guys haircut, you can't beat it. I'll be going here as long as I live in San Francisco. Oh, and they top it off with a free quick shoulder massage.
