We have about 300 60-min DV minicassette video records. They cover about 2 decades of work by our organization's founder who recently passed away. These legacy records are precious and needed to be securely transferred into digital format for preservation on hard drives and in the cloud. The transfer from DV, an old technology, to digital, such as AVI or MP4 files, can only be done at real-time speeds; i.e., a one-hour DV video requires one hour to transfer, using specialized hardware. So we had 300hrs of work! We wanted AVI to preserve maximum video quality and MP4 for long-term cloud storage economy. And we needed a practical price to make the project financially possible for us. I dropped off an 8mm reel. Sean and Andrea turned the film into mp4 format which they delivered to me via dropbox. Now I can view the film in Dropbox or download it to my phone or computer or watch it on TV. From Dropbox I loaded the video into youtube. Terrific service! Very reasonable price! read more

Digital Roots review Finding Digital Roots on YELP was truly my "Christmas Miracle" this year. Like many of us I have been wanting to digitize our family's precious home movies to preserve and share with my children. I was planning to surprise my "baby" boy for his 50th birthday with a DVD of all the childhood - plus photos. It took a long while to sort out 4 decades of photos in 5 huge boxes but had a gift box from Scan Cafe so off went 200 photos to be scanned. After 8 weeks and it getting very close to the birthday I called - after all it was shipped to southern California. Well it turns out they went to India and it took an additional fee and Fed-Ex to get them back 4 days before I flew to Seattle for the Birthday celebration. That's where Digital Roots came in and rescued me. In less than 3 days they took the digitally scanned photos, added music, titles and made a wonderful slide show. My son, tho somewhat embarrassed by pictures of him sucking his thumb, was thrilled with the DVD, the grand kids thought it funny, my daughter-in-law thought it charming and everyone loved it. I had a couple of different projects to take care of and DRS could not have been more helpful. A couple of VHS tapes needed to be transferred to DVD and I didn't want to go through the hassle of searching for the proper hardware to buy which would have been way more expensive than necessary considering that I only needed this done with two old instructional videos. I ended up asking a slew of questions before we even got started and Andrea was more than happy to walk me through every step of the process and explain all the costs and scheduling involved. She even informed me that I could make my own copies of the new DVDs in order to save a few bucks (though they do offer duplicate copies provided there is no copyright infringement involved). I was so pleased with this first experience that I dug up a favorite old homemade VHS of mine to have transferred to digital file in order to edit and upload clips to YouTube. Andrea is very nice and very professional, she handles pick up and drop-off at a local UPS Store and everyone there seems to love her and her business. I recently took about 50 small 8mm films, and 8 medium rolls of 8mm film from the 1960s and 70s to Digital Roots to be transferred to DVD. It was about 5 hours of film. I had no idea what was on the film and was not sure if any of it was salvageable. Well, I came home and watched the DVDs and laughed and cried and just remembered my childhood good times. I am going on a family reunion with my two brothers and their families and my sister and her family, and my parents. They have no idea I did this.
