Horrible Experience The new owner is not good. I've been coming here for 10 years and the last two times were bad experiences. My appointment was for 1. I arrived at 12:45. Walked out at 1:30 after they said "it will just be a few minutes" for the 10th time. I took time off of work to wait in their lobby for 45 minutes. They also scheduled a full exam when I specifically asked for a normal cleaning. They also found out I'm paying out of pocket and not with insurance and the doctors mood changed and said "oh ok". Come here if you want to be constantly pressured and upsold. My partner and I were both told we needed the "deep clean" for an extra cost (we use a sonicare and floss daily at home, and my partner had to come right back because they missed a stain on his tooth) and were told we needed to come every 4 months, not 6. Also quoted 2k for dental work. Went to Dr. Khodadadi and I can't even express how much of a relief it was to finally go to a dentist who never tries to upsell you and squeeze any penny they can get. He always compliments us on how clean our teeth are and is keeping on eye on my tooth "issue" that Smile Emporium said I needed fixed for 2k, but is up front that it doesn't need any work at the moment. EDUCATE YOURSELF AND BE PREPARED FOR THE HARD SELL I give them two stars for having a friendly staff. But, in the end, I was left wondering if the friendly staff was all just part of getting me to agree to thousands of dollars in unnecessary dental services. In my case, I visited this dental office for the first time for a simple toothache. After x-rays and an exam, I was brought into a room where the office manager engaged me in small talk and then presented me with a sheet of paper with a dizzying array of numbers. I was asked to sign some type of lengthy agreement (don't do it). It was explained that the numbers represented the cost of my recommended procedures, their discounted price, the amount my insurance would pay (very little), and the ultimate cost to me (a lot). It was all very rushed, and they want you to agree on the spot. They know what to say when you hesitate - even offering me a discount if I would agree to immediately fork over my credit card and pay in advance. For the toothache it was recommended I have a short course of antibiotics followed by a tooth extraction and an implant costing thousands of dollars. I declined and, as it turns out, the antibiotics (free with my insurance) resolved the problem. It has been over two months without any issues. Next came the deep cleaning hustle. Instead of a regular cleaning covered by my insurance, I was told I needed a "deep cleaning with medication" at a cost of $650. Again, they know what to say if you hesitate. They make you feel stupid for even questioning it. I was also recommended a night guard at a significant cost. On this one, if you hesitate, they will tell you to just go on Amazon and buy one for $25. At this point I really didn't trust this office. I decided not to have anything done and to go elsewhere. In sum, it was quite a bad experience for me at this dental office. I was not prepared for the hard sell I received at the end and a little embarrassed that I almost fell for it. read more

* * * ZERO, ZERO, ZERO, ZERO STARS * * * NEGATIVE, NEGATIVE rating. Zaker is a joke. I'm not even putting the "Dr." in front of his name because he should not be a dentist. His shady and unprofessional practices have many complaints, grievances and investigations. I was getting treatment from him at the San Pedro "Smile Emporium" office. He performed a root canal on me and did a shoddy job when he placed the crown. It was not seated properly and I developed a cavity under the crown. My new dentist discovered the cavity. I went back to Zaker and asked him (through his receptionist because he wouldn't speak with me) to redo the crown free of charge since it was not done correctly and he refused. He told the receptionist to tell me to have my new dentist fix the problem. And to make things worse, he would not see me until I paid a supposed $500+ balance on my account. I asked the billing manager why I had a balance, since I have double insurance, and she gave me a the worse answer out of the "excuse" playbook. I investigated through Delta Dental myself and found out that they billed my insurance incorrectly. Delta was asking them for further information for this root canal and additional radiographs. They kept providing the wrong information for over an year until the billing period was closed. Zaker is unprofessional and performs questionable work. He does not guarantee or stand by his work. You really risk the health and integrity of your teeth if you go see him. Be forewarned... You WILL regret going there. read more

After this office canceled my scheduled cleaning which I had scheduled 6 months in advance, they did not provide me with first pick of dates to come in. I have gone to a different dentist since and have found out that Dr. Zaker is not very thorough in his work. My new dentist tells me the few cavities I had refilled with white filling to get rid of the silver fillings need to be re-filled again as they may not have been sealed properly since discoloration is below the filling now. The newer two cavities Dr. Zaker filled have chipped fillings and sealants already. I had these done January 2018 and it is now August. I think I eat like a normal person and brush my teeth twice a day. Fillings and sealants should last longer than 8 months. My silver ones lasted over 10 years. If you want lasting work done on your teeth, go elsewhere. Everything Dr. Zaker has done to my teeth is being redone. Staff not very friendly here as well and the hygienist that cleans the teeth never seems to be able to suction your saliva out of your mouth leaving you to constantly choke on your saliva while having teeth cleaned. They also charge for fluoride as part of cleaning! You can tell them you don't want fluoride. It's $50 copay with insurance. Parking is horrible. Good luck finding a spot to park. read more

I felt the need to update my review, I no longer recommend this business. I am very disappointed by this, if you read my original review dated 7/2/2019, you'll read how much I loved this office and the people there. I no longer feel the same since making the mistake of having them provide orthodontics service for my three boys. To give you some background knowledge, Dr. Sam has been my dentist for about ten years. My boys have needed braces for years, my new job gave me the opportunity to finally have it done. I was happy that Dr. Sam's office now offered regular orthodontist services, but they didn't when they first recommended it. I was so excited for Dr. Sam to do the braces, I didn't ask questions assuming Dr. Sam would provide the services; I was not told otherwise. The only concern that I raised was whether my youngest two boys would be able to get maintenance visits based on their schedule. My middle son was off to college, and he would need to fly out or catch the train back home for maintenance. The office manager (Imelda) suggested that he should catch the train because it would be cheaper; she even provided instructions on how to do it. Regarding my youngest son, he is a senior in high school with four AP classes and two honors, needless to say he can't miss classes; he also has after school activities and the office is not open late. I informed Imelda that Saturdays were their only option during the school year for maintenance; Imelda assured me that it would be fine, and she would schedule the appointments on Saturdays. Once the boys received their braces, we had immediate problems. When my middle son got his braces in, a bracket fell off the night of and I had to move him into college the next day with a 5am LAX flight. When I returned from my son's college move-in, I informed the office of this. Imelda told me that they will connect me with a dentist near his college to provide service and will call me back with a referral. After three weeks of waiting, I called the office and was finally able to speak with the office clerk after multiple attempts. At this point, I was very disappointed at their lack of communication and care. I requested to speak with Dr. Sam directly. To my surprise, I was told that I can't speak with him and that "he doesn't speak with his clients directly over the phone." I was in shock and extremely upset because the reason I've been going to this office was the fact that my family was treated like family with care and consideration. Anyways, I was told that I had to make an appointment to speak with the doctor, so I requested 4 one; she then told me my appointment had to be in the morning. I work school hours and over an hour away, meeting in the morning meant I had to miss work. The office clerk didn't care or even check to see if other arrangements could be made, she told me that mornings were the only time I could make the appointment, so I did. After missing work to meet with the doctor, they STILL did not let me speak with him. The appointment was made with Imelda, I told her what happened and that my appointment was made with Dr. Sam; she told me that she would speak with the office clerk, and I should not have to miss work. She assured me once again that she would take care of everything and "moving forward she will handle all communication with me," including making appointments. When I agreed to have the braces put in, I assumed it would be done by Dr. Sam because I was not told otherwise, but it was done by his assistant (Theo). I am not even sure of his qualifications. I brought this up with Imelda during our meeting that we didn't like that Dr. Sam didn't do the braces, like we thought he would. I acknowledge that I didn't ask questions, I should have. I trusted this office and have been with them for years without issue. Dr. Sam assured me once that he was guiding the work and directing Theo on what to do. I felt like my boys were being practiced on, but I've already paid in full and didn't really have a choice in the matter, so I hoped for the best with Dr. Sam's oversight, even though I was unhappy. Unfortunately, after my middle son's last appointment before returning to college, he was told he couldn't schedule a weekend appointment. I called the office to find out why, but no one answered. I then received a text saying they "will no longer be open on Saturdays and sorry for the inconvenience." Imelda of course didn't call me to inform me of any new policy or changes to the office hours after she assured me that I could have services on the weekends. At the very least they could've found me an alternative or given me a referral knowing our situation, especially since they agreed for Saturday appointments. I have left multiple messages regarding this and after a month I haven't heard back, not even a follow-up from Dr. Sam so he's not as caring as I thought he was. AVOID THIS DENTIST!!!-SMILE EMPORIUM 2470 S Western Ave Ste A San Pedro-They are liers and thieves!!! DR.Zaker told me I have decays and I need 4 crowns ASAP! When I asked him how long his crowns good for and what's his guarantee - he told me go find another dentist!!! I ended up going to Dr Sheng-who by the way is wonderful and recommended by many!!!After x-rays and an exam - He told me I don't have any decays and I don't need crown now , possibly in the future and only 2! I am shocked but happy Also I am transferring my daughter to Dr Sheng as well. When they looked at her insurance records it showed that she had four feelings done at the other dentist-DrZaker. But she did not! She only had X-rays and cleaning done that day and I asked for pricing for the feelings. I never even schedule an appointment for feelings. They told me they will send me pricing information over the mail and they never did but now it shows that her feelings were done and our insurance was charged. So now she cannot have feelings done for free at the other office. I called their manager and waiting to hear from them. In my opinion Dr. Zaker is the best dentist in San Pedro. Not because his office is next to a Starbucks lol but because his office took the time to educate me on the procedures that I was going to need in a way that was easy to understand. No other dentist that I have been to has done that. Usually they just get to work. In the lobby they have a TV with a video playing that shows animations of dental procedures and how they are done. Nothing graphic our gross but very interesting. As for the teeth cleaning I got... after it was finished my teeth looked much whiter and were of course very clean. My wisdom teeth have been growing in for quite some time now, but a couple of days ago I had really bad swelling and pain on one side of my mouth where one of my teeth is growing in. The pain was bad enough that I wanted to just go and see a dentist right away so I started browsing through yelp trying to find a dentist that was open, it was around 3:45 on a Friday so I did not have many options. I found Smile Emporium and it didn't close until 5 pm so I thought that this was perfect, so I gave them a call. The man who answered the phone was friendly and I asked if there was any openings right now and he said that the dentist has already left (the place closes at 5 and it's almost 4) but I totally understood it was last minute so I asked if I could come in the next day. The person on the phone gave me a time I could come in, but I had a Grad school class that lasted until 1 so I asked if I could come in at 2 and the guy said that he'd check to see if that was alright and that he'd call me back in "like 5 minutes." Now I wasn't expecting a call in exactly 5 minutes but I was expecting a call back. I never did receive that call and I didn't even receive one the next day. I don't understand the Smile Emporium's business model if they don't keep their word to potential clients and don't reach out to customers who are ready to pay for their services.
