The only reason why I didn't give a 5 star review was the front desk lady. I decided to get some bao buns for home and boy she was rude. I must not be a regular enough since this was my first time there. I made a point to say thank you several times with a smile and she ignore all several time, no eye contact, nothing. Rude as heck. Like she was mad at me but pleasant to all the regulars. She made me feel so bad that 1 star deduction wasn't even enough given I spent $200 for lunch with bao buns and this is the attitude I get. Overall Thoughts: This is a solid dim sum option on the outskirts of Chinatown, about a 20 minute walk from central Chinatown. As such, it's a lot less crowded than the other dim sum spots in Chicago and was relatively empty when we went on a Sunday. It was also cheaper than other Chicago dim sum spots I've been to-- it was just under $16 per person + tip for a group of 10. Overall, the food is good and tasty. They have all/most of the classics as well as a few unique items that I haven't seen at other dim sum spots in Chicago, like the pork floss egg sandwich, which I really liked. Some of the dishes were a little cold though and they also forgot 1-2 of our orders, but it was fine; we were pretty stuffed anyways. The Lily flower, black fungus, chicken dish I got for dinner was veeery mild in flavor aside from ginger, and majority of the chicken was bones, particularly tiny ribs and vertebrae. Bone-in meat is very tender and juicy and flavorful, but these itty bitty bits were annoying. The waitress brought hot tea which was so smooth and this was the best part of the meal. I stay in a hotel without a kitchenette working one week a month in rural Illinois and pass by Chinatown on my way from O'Hare so I stock up on food here. The cooking in this hole in the wall place is only so so but it is easy on and off the Dan Ryan. Some of my favorites to take with me are beef brisket stew, soy sauce chow mein, chicken with green onion which all travel well. Lobster lo mein is on special but I don't trust seafood after a 2 hour drive. If you are an aficionado of sinewy, chewy texture, the spicy chicken feet in the refrigerated case by the cash register are not to be missed. There is a small section of baked goods but they are often pretty much picked over by the time I get there in the mid afternoon. Dim sum is served until 3 pm everyday. read more

Dim Dim is one of my favorite dim sum spots in Chicago because it's authentic, cheap, and convenient. For comparison, crepes here are ~$3, while they're ~$5 at MingHin and ~$4 at Phoenix. I ordered BBQ pork buns, egg yolk custard buns, chicken feet, turnip cakes, pan fried pork and vegetable bun, sesame balls, shrimp dumplings, and beef rice crepes (in order in the picture from left to right, top to bottom). We also ordered Hong Kong Style Milk Tea which was only $2!! It wasn't the best milk tea I've had, but it was definitely worth the $2. My favorites were the beef rice crepes and the egg yolk custard bun. The crepes come with delicious sauce. Some restaurants don't get the sauce right, but Dim Dim does!! I also liked how the turnip cakes had chunks of turnip inside! You can also buy bakery items and frozen dim sum to go too! There's parking right outside (although limited) so that's another plus. Dim Dim is my go-to place for comfort food. I've never sat down at the restaurant to eat and maybe some day I will, but for now I'm sticking with my carry out routine: beef brisket noodle soup with flat rice noodles, and an iced milk tea. Sometimes they'll have buns/egg tarts that haven't been completely picked over by hungry customers who came earlier in the day. I love this place because it feels like Hong Kong. My parents are both native Cantonese speakers and I grew up speaking it until starting school. I've lost most of my ability to have a fluid conversation and my struggle is obvious. I'll try to find synonyms for words in order to form basic phrases. If all else fails, I just use nouns. Despite my linguistic handicap... I can still order my favorite dishes (which is KEY) and have kindergarten-level conservations with my grandma. I'll usually call Dim Dim after work to place my order over the phone: "Dohng lai cha. Ngao lam tong fun. Oi mai." Iced milk tea. Brisket noodle soup. Carry out. Once I arrive, it's like being transported to an authentic slice of Hong Kong. The contrast is real: A) I can hear snippets of Canto illuminated all around me. I comprehend most of the banter and feel proud I can eavesdrop, even though I'd never be able to fully participate myself. The contrast is real: B) I end the work day which had been full of cordial emails and using inside voices... and am met with the lady cashier loudly joking with the man in front of me to speak more clearly, "you poor thing, people can barely understand you!" A hidden gem, Google terms this as a low key dim sum joint but hardly! We went on Saturday about 12:30ish PM and the place was packed. We thankfully did manage a table. A little while later I did realize why it maybe be called low key - the whole while we were there, we saw only Chinese people visiting this place, seems like this place is not very well known outside the Chinese community for some reason but it is honestly very surprising. Their dim sums are top notch and the price point is considerably lower than other dim sum places. For items where we spent about $40 (minus tip), we spent only $33 including the tip! Plus, this place also have a bakery front which is very popular - people poured in to take bakery take outs the whole time. Another reason could be this is quite outside Chinatown and right beside the highway, pretty easy to miss. But one big plus - it is inside a shopping square and you get free parking, truly a lifesaver when you are wanting to dine out on the weekends at peak hours. Another plus - complimentary tea! My only pet peeve with this place and the reason for 1 less star was that the service was very slow. We had to make an effort to get their attention and the reason is that the same servers were managing the bakery shop and the orders and at a busy hour they looked under staffed. I have become picky on time since I have become a mom - with an infant, every minute is precious. For folks who have time on their hands, you should be fine. I don't consider myself a foodie by any stretch. I know the dishes I like and I tend to stick with them I unless I am feeling adventurous. Such is the case for Chinese cuisine. I love chicken fried rice. Been eating it for years... This place has the most albino fried rice I've ever seen (that includes out of the country places) with peas and carrots (what!?). Zero taste. I mean it tasted like white rice cooked in egg water with peas and carrots. I say cooked in egg water because there was the barest hint of eggs taste to it. The chicken was ok as long as I didn't bite down on a piece that had fat or what I'm guessing was cartilage hanging off the end. I asked for almond cookies. The lady taking my order looked at me like she's never heard of them. I repeated it to the same results so I politely said that's it for my order, thinking maybe almond cookies isn't a thing at all Chinese restaurants. I turn to my right to sit and wait for my food and what is sitting on the shelf in a plastic container with sliced almonds on top. One of my go-to dim sum places to go with my mom. They don't have the biggest selection but they have parking in the lot in front and neighborhood parking and a lot of Cantonese dishes that I love. I like that they offer Korean short ribs for dim sum. I love that flavor and it's nice to not have to venture far to get it. I can go in and get a few Asian bakery goods or sit down and get a cheap meal. It's close to an Asian grocery store so you get some groceries after you eat. It's situated in a good place. Sometimes they have off days so I'm in between giving this place a 3 or 4. My last review was only 2 stars, which was for dining in. This is a positive review for the frozen dim sum to take home for my late night snack cravings. I purchased the following: - Shrimp Dumplings (har gow) - 15 pieces for $10 - Spinach Dumplings (pretty much a shrimp dumpling with spinach-based wrapper) - 12 pc for $9 - Shrimp Won-Tons - 15 pc for $8 - Siu-mai (mix of shrimp and pork - but with no fish roe on top) - 15 pc for $10 - Chiu-Chow dumpling (least favorite - not recommended) - 12 for $10 - Mantou (plain bun) - 6 for $5 At first, I was a little sticker shocked that I paid $60 for frozen dim-sum, but this isn't chemical or preservatives filled frozen food found at the grocery store frozen aisle. I steamed everything for 10 min (15 min for siu mai because it's a dense thick meat filling) and it turned out quite good! The ingredients were generous and the dumplings and buns were well made. Of course these frozen dim sums are not as good as the freshly made ones at dim-sum restaurants, but still way better than any factory made frozen dumplings sold in grocery stores. My parents love this place for breakfast and lunch, and they've been coming on a weekly basis. They find this place convenient with ample parking that's free and serves everything from dim sum to pastries to actual plates of lunch/dinners. I personally think their dim sum is just okay, I've had better shrimp crepes, turnip cakes and chicken feet for dim sum in Chinatown. I usually go to Imperial Restaurant, Minghin or Phoenix for dim sum. I do have to say their salted fish fried rice with chicken is delicious, and that'd be my go to dish if I come back. The service is not bad when you're dining in. I remember calling in an order for my parents and grandparents at one point, and they didn't really have any manners -- they answer the phone in Cantonese asking me what I want and if that's all. Don't expect red carpet service, but your order will be accurate and they are efficient. I'd say come check this place out at least once and see what you think, it is a one stop shop with their selection, and it could be a hit or miss depending on the person and their taste buds. It's not bad but it's also not great in my opinion. I'm just a critic when it comes to authentic Chinese food. I just had the same dish at a Japanese restaurant serving 4 pieces of shrimp at the same price, here you have a whole dish!!! The bbq beef short rib is my all time favorite dish. I can't comment on anything here other than the food since it was ordered and picked up by someone else. However, other factors like excellent service would not be enough to make the food here worth ordering. We had a pretty standard assortment of dishes to try: har gow, siu mai, shrimp cheung fun, beef cheung fun, cha shu bao, spare ribs, water chestnut cake. Of this list, only the siu mai was actually good (hence 2 stars instead of 1). The spare ribs were okay; they tasted pretty much as expected. Every other dish, however, were terrible. The rice crepes were the worst offenders; the rice noodle layer was too thick and actually hard/brittle at parts (this issue was also apparent on the ha gao). The shrimp in all the dishes tasted off with the ones in the rice crepes in particular being so overcooked that they were rubbery as well. The cha shu bao was not as bad, but still one of my least favorites I've had. Not much for me to say on the water chestnut cake since I normally don't like those anyways. With all the other dim sum options around Chinatown, there's really not much reason to order from here. read more

A small restaurant tucked under a highway in a small strip mall with very limited parking. Seating is limited so get there early! My family and I decided to take a trip to Chicago and this restaurant was recommend by a family friend. We walked in and was seated right away, they had a small array of different buns and breads you could purchase on display. About 10 mins later, this place was packed! And a line was staring to form. We had ordered a little bit of everything from porridge to chicken feet ( "best chicken feet I ever had " - my brother ) . I tend to stay away from that.. anyway, everything was really good and came out fresh. We didn't realize how much food we had ordered until we were about done eating and more food was coming out. Shared parking at this strip mall where I guess there's high turnover. We were able to find a open spot as well pulled in at the northern end of the parking lot. So convenient in the sense of walk in dining and Dim Dim generally won't have a line. I'd say average dim sum. No bad items, but in the end we were paying close to $45 including tip for 9 items. (their SS on the menu was $3.09 and ranges up to $4.39 for L). Would note that what is described as pan-fried lotus-root cake (M $4.09) had more of a siu mai filling with corn. I think there must have been a substitution here or a complete mislabeling on the menu. Here's what else we tried that we were happy with: - Walnut Bun (S) - Siu Mai (M) - Spinach Shrimp Dumpling (L) - sub this in, if you usually get Shrimp Dumplings - Veggie Rice Crepe (changfun) - (SS) - Sweet potato frycakes (M) - Black sesame cake (S) Bill turned out to be $45 with tax and tip. Seems a little high to me to be considered a $ restaurant. We're modest eaters and took home only a walnut bun, a black sesame cake, and a sweet potato cake. So if you wanted to price what we dined in, it'd be closer to $40. Being a no frills place, we weren't offered an option for kind of tea and water was brought for my daughter in a styrofoam cup with plastic lid and straw, rather than just a cup (she's old enough at 9). But I'd bump them up a star from 3 to 4 given that they do have lo mai gai and and zong zi to pickup to go along with frozen dim sum to go. There are also bakery items too - but they were somewhat picked over by the time we were leaving. I am very sorry, but I will not be coming back to this place again. Though a few of the dishes were okay, but majority had a overpowering sensation of oil and salt that it was difficult to consume our meal. We ordered 8 dishes for 5 people which we knew was plenty, but we wanted to try a variety of foods. The only thing good about this place is how quickly the food came out. As soon as we ordered, our food came out immediately and they were still hot. The egg custard bun was not hot drippy like it should be. Cai's were way better. The shrimp crepe was actually the best I had in awhile. They don't skip out on the shrimps and they were jumbo even in the shrimp egg rolls. The congee with minced beef and preserved egg was the most plainest congee I've ever tasted... I came to here fro dim sum since all other places inside Chinatown were really crowded. Unlike the old school style dim sum place, you will not see ppl push cars with dim sum around.
