OWNER IS RACIST!!!!! On 07/19/2025 around 1pm, I walked into the store with my partner and an Asian lady (who I presume is the owner) was taking cash from a white woman inside when she stopped servicing her immediately to ask what I needed. I asked if she offered alteration services and she recommended me to go to a store down the street that 'speaks my language' then said she was booked. The white woman who she was servicing tried playing damage control by stating that the owner was booked for a closure at the end of NEXT month. Regardless, a simple 'sorry, we are booked' would have sufficed. Keep in mind, I am a Mexican-American, born and raised in California with an undergraduate degree. This racist comment was very bizarre considering the fact that my English is far more fluent than hers. This being said, I highly discourage supporting this business. read more

My wife and I have been bringing my pants and my wife's clothes to Dina for several years and she's done a great job. Her hems never come undone. What really stood out this time was how perfect she mended my Levi's pants. She patched the inside of two pair of pants and there was no trace of the mending that could be observed from the outside. I had never seen this level of quality before. My pants last at least twice as long! I received a company jacket from my employer. Beautiful jacket that fit perfectly except the sleeves were too long. It was also made of some modern synthetic material that must have been difficult to work with. I somehow managed to tear the shoulder area of one of my favorite suit coats.(See the photos.) Tears on shoulders are tough to fix since it's not a flat surface. Luckily a local dry cleaner suggested I try Valley Custom Tailor -- across the street from Valley Fair. I'm glad I did. Dina quoted me $130 and about a week to repair. The repair process is called reweaving. They take cloth from the hemline of the pants and use it to replace the damaged area. They essentially have to weave back in every strand. The result is nearly flawless. In my case, you can notice the work if you look really closely since my jacket has faded slightly as compared to the pristine fabric on the inside of the pant leg. As Dina said, I'm good to go now for another 5 years. I still don't know how the rip happened though. read more

She does her best and it's always the best and as hard as I've been to fit my whole life she's managed to make everything perfect when it comes to altering any of my clothes. I hate giving bad reviews :( but I feel the need to say something here to the people who have a realllyyy special and important date- like I did- let's say a wedding in Honduras, for example, where you can't get (and don't want to have more, extra stitching either) your dress or pants hemmed again because you really shouldn't have to in the first place and the sweet lady (I think the owner) convinces you that it's perfect because you just have to consider that you want it long enough/whatever to have it barely grace the floor beautifully... and ok- explaining it this way is too hard- so to get to the point: I got my dress hemmed here and even though I really felt like I needed a little more taken up, the lady told me I just didn't really understand how the stitching works- because the the marks she made were aligned perfectly with the new length- and that there way no way it needed to be shorter. But really, I just don't think she wanted to have to re-alter a dress or even check it simply because she didn't want to do the extra work. Take your important stuff elsewhere! I think practically every other tailor cares about their work enough to at least have you try whatever garment you need on again if they are concerned, to make sure they don't come back because they wore it, and ruined it, because it dragged on the floor despite being hemmed... and now, for the rest of my life when people see the dress I wore to the wedding, I'll have to explain I didn't go to a good tailor and so the end of my dress got caught up on my heels too much and made holes and actually made me trip multiple times! I actually had to use rubber bands to tie this dress up in the ugliest fashion so I could get my dance on. So many pictures ruined!!!! Rubber bands people! At a very formal wedding! With my dress bunched up and sticking out like a bouncy pony tail! If your just scanning this to get an idea of "why is there one star amongst so many good ratings?"-- I had to wear rubber bands at a wedding to hold my dress up because it was just too long even after she altered it. Even told me it was fine when I had a bad feeling about it because she didn't want to take the extra time. It was a really important day, and I wanted everything to be perfect, but this tailor just wants people in and out for money. Irina made my custom wedding dress from a pattern and fabric that I provided. At my request, she used the two-step process, where a model of the garment is made from inexpensive muslin fabric, and then altered on the person. The muslin was beautifully made, and, to my eye, fit me like a glove. Irina took one look at it and made small changes that made it even better. She is a master of fit. In order to get the dress I wanted, she took the pattern and re-designed it to better fit my expectations. This included adding boning and a crinoline, which are not particularly easy things to do. Due to the stress of planning a wedding, I started to lose weight. The dress had to be completely re-fitted, but this was not a problem for Irina. She was able to do re-fit a boned bodice and did a beautiful job. In addition, the fabric I chose was a white silk satin, which famously shows pin marks and lines. She somehow re-fit this dress without a single pin mark on the bodice. I am the graddaughter of a tailor, so I am both familiar with the process of making custom clothing, and have very high standards for fit and construction. Being petite has it's advantages and disadvantages. One disadvantage being that I have to get all my pants altered! It's sooo annoying when I buy jeans that are ridiculously long. I mean come on...who is really that tall besides runway models?! If you're that tall and you're not a model, then you need to become a model so that you can get all that free clothes--no need shopping where us shorties shop. Anyways, when I need my pants or jeans altered, I'll come to Valley Custom Tailor. I can rely on them to make sure that my clothes come back in one piece and perfectly fit. They are experts at keeping original hems and they can do almost any intricate alterations that is required. I know I can get alterations at a cheaper price elsewhere, but I haven't found the courage to try other places out, in fear of them destroying my clothes. I deducted a star because of the Italian or Russian lady who always helps me. She's really grumpy sometimes and she can come off as very rude and condescending. Terrible customer service. Been meaning to write this for a long time. I'd literally spent thousands of dollars at this place when I decided a couple years ago I would not be coming back. Every time I came in, it felt like I was a burden and that I was wasting their time. The woman who owns the shop is rude and often talks on the phone when she is fitting you. I'd been going there for years and she never even learned my name. It's like she just couldn't be bothered. I admit that they do a good job with the tailoring, but with their high prices--and the fact that I was a repeat customer--I would expect friendlier service. Irena the owner is a rude person when it comes to customer service. Fernando, her husband, is nice. But she is a little terror. Her work is good, and she has a nice reputation, but she is so rude and bossy and just plain sarcastic. My whole family has been to her over the last couple years and she is always rude, but since she does good work, we have continued to put up with her attitude and verbal abuse. The problem is our continued patronage has not yielded better treatment. I hope that people will boycott her and she will be taught how to run a business with customer service. Finally decided the convenience isn't worth it. I have had some things hemmed here just fine, but I had to bring back the same pair of jeans to get the back buttons sewn in three times. Once I spent 10 mins picking out the perfect buttons, only to find when I came to pick up that they had not finished the alternation, and lost the buttons I picked out. Second time, she was irritated that I brought my jeans back when the buttons popped off the first day I wore them. Then she said she would take them to the cobbler next store to get riveted in, but when I picked up, she hadn't done anything differently. When they popped off another time, I had my dry cleaner sew them in and they have been OK ever since. But I decided not to return because I had a dress altered (shorten the trunk from the top seam) and wore it once and the seams were bursting open. Now it sits in my closet and I keep meaning ot take it back, but I realize, why take it back there again, just like my jeans? Oh, forgot about my pledge not to return and went by at 2pm. I've found this place through yelp and I've been coming to them for more than 2 years now. Unfortunately the last few times I've been here, the work has been sloppy and just seems lazy to me. I'm a short girl so I always bring in pants or long dresses that need to be hemmed only. The first time I noticed was when I brought my maxi dress in to get hemmed. When I came to pick it up, the dress was still very long and the sewing was uneven. Now last time I brought in three light blue jeans to be hemmed. When I came to pick it up, the thread was black. They didn't use similar thread to my jeans and it looked completely off. It seems like they are being lazy and used any color thread. I asked them to fix it and they said it would take a week. It's an inconvenience for me because I like things done right the first time. I guess I will have to find a new tailor shop. read more

This is the best tailoring place I've ever known. I've never been in a rush for anything here, so I don't know how they'd respond if I needed something by a certain date or time, but the work has been top-notch and the tailors find creative solutions for everything (such as, maybe when we don't know exactly what we want -- they help fill in the blank based on their knowledge of clothes). So far, we've had waists taken in, pants hemmed, shoulder pads removed, buttons reattached, sleeves let out, and I even once returned a dress to the store when they said they couldn't improve it the way I wanted (the style was too short-waisted for me). I really appreciated their honesty and caring, not just about making a buck! I don't know how their prices compare to others as it's not an area in which I've done much comparison shopping. It costs $18 to have a waist taken in on a blouse. Sounds like a lot -- I usually don't even spend that much on the blouse -- but there's nothing like well-fitting clothing. read more

OVERRATED, OVERPRICED. I expected better service being referred to Valley Custom by an employee at Macy's suit department. The work itself is good, but I had to wait while nobody else was around. I heard her chat it up with the others in the back and it didn't sound urgent to me. I wish I knew what they were talking about. Anyway busy or not, businesses shouldn't be run this way. I come in and wait by the counter for 5 mins (NOBODY ELSE THERE), she comes out and tells me to try on my slacks I need altered. It takes me one minute to try on my slacks and when I come out, I wait another 5 mins to get her to look at it. All this while I'm walking around in my t-shirt and super long slacks looking like a goof. It's obvious from the other reviews she doesn't care for small orders. Come here if you aren't in a rush and make sure to bring your alternations ahead of time so you don't pay the rush tailoring premium. Quality but hit-or-miss service and poor value. read more

Horrible! I was reading some of the other comments and perhaps they can "hem" jeans well but don't trust them with a coat. They altered the arms on two of my husbands suits and a coat and messed up horribly. Each garment was uneven by more than one inch ... how can that be? They did such a terrible job I demanded my things back and they refused unless I paid the full bill, even though they did acknowledge a horrible job! I had to call the police for a civil standby to get my things and even the officer agreed that it was a horrible job. I didn't have to pay the full bill but was out an additional $100 for fixing the items. If you want my advice: Not worth it, skip em! read more

Cranky old owner does not like you to ask questions. I watched being short with other customers who asked simple questions. She was confrontational with me because I called to see if my two suits would be ready by noon as promised because I didn't want to drive 10 miles for nothing. She got mad because I called thinking that I was pressuring her when I didn't say Anything. I just asked if they would be ready in time. Otherwise I would have made the trip another day. When I arrived she confronted me for calling. The also speak Russian among themselves which is also uncomfortable when done right in front of you. Finally they are very expensive. Off and on, I've frequented Valley Custom Tailor for a few years for easy alterations. I preferred dealing with the woman who ran their location within Westfield Valley Fair. Unfortunately it's closed. The two women have very different personalities, and the result is that when you go into the business, you may be dealing with Jekyll or Hyde. I have only felt comfortable dealing with simple alterations at this business, but after my last experience, I won't be returning, even for those. Two pairs of jean pants were to be hemmed, and couldn't be easier to do. I was told the due date, and the pick-up time stated is 2:30. I showed up at 3:30, and they weren't ready. I was made to complete my name and phone number on the alterations slip; however they could not make use of it. :/ When I returned the next morning to pick them up, they were removed from a hanger and handed to me in a ball. This showed lack of care for my clothes and lack of pride in their own handiwork, for which I had paid. I am more than happy to take 100% of my business to a fabulous shop in Palo Alto where most of my other alterations are done. There is no use in trying to pay for convenience when what you really want is service and a job well done. read more

I picked this place because the clothing store I used to work at sent all alternations here and I knew that Irina did good work! I needed to get an Sari for a wedding taken in a little bit. Came in on a Sunday afternoon and there was no one here. Irina told me that she would just add some darts to the back and it would look really nice and be inexpensive. The Sari was ready by Wednesday afternoon as I requested. It was perfect. The darts are barely noticeable and it fits well. My garment was steamed as well. Price point was very inexpensive. If you need your garment within a day, you only pay $5 extra. read more

My husband recently brought a new (we have recipes) buttoned shirt here for alteration (tailored fit in the back). The seamstress had him put it on for fitting of course. When he came to pick it up it had a tear on the chest (I'll attach the picture). It is obvious, he demanded them to refund this. They refused to compensate for the shirt and money charged for the alteration claiming it had been damaged before. Which is not true obviously. We are currently looking into what actions to take (BBB, credit card company etc) as such unprofessional and dishonest behavior must be punished. Take your business elsewhere! read more

Valley Custom Tailor does great work and has the best interest of their customer. I bought a suit at Macy's and needed the pants tailored the same day for a job interview the next day. Macy's could not do it so they referred me to Valley Custom Tailor. VCT not only fitted my pants for me but also suggested an adjustment on the middle upper back of my suit jacket and got it done the same day. I bought a whole bunch of new designer jeans the other week and Im a shorty so i needed them hemmed. I wasnt just going to take my new duds to any tailor or dry cleaner with a neon 'ALTERATIONS' sign so I yelped a tailor. Because i didnt want to drive all the way to Mountain View or Palo Alto.. this place had to do. Valley Custom Tailor has a pretty good reputation and its right next to valley fair.. so they must have a lot of customer wanting to hem their new long and expensive jeans. So i went there Friday got them measured and dropped them off. it was very fast as usual. I was probably there with my pair of jeans for only 5 mins. I was scheduled to pick up my jeans on Sunday before 3. I pick up my jeans yesturday and paid $29.. one original hem and one regular. at least they take card. I always always use debit card. I rarely carry cash. I got home and tried on my jeans.. they were fine. im a happy customer. i just found it a little pricey. But overall.... who better to trust your jeans. read more

This place is fantastic. I've been coming here for 6 years - best place I found in San Jose. Price has never been an issue because Dina and her staff do such amazing work. I've brought every single suit I own to this place. My wife brought her wedding dress here. What's more - I have these vintage Tommy Bahama shirts that just don't fit me right and I'm in between sizes. I thought I'd have to toss them and buy new ones but Dina deconstructed all of the shirts and re-sewed it pretty much from scratch to fit perfectly!! VCT has never disappointed me. Good place for "original" hemming on your favorite pair of jeans. It's expensive ($18) but then again you just paid a crapload of money for those jeans and you want them to look just as good and in the same (worn, frayed, used) condition as you bought them so it's worth it. read more

I've never had a problem with the quality of work (I've taken expensive jeans, two bridesmaid dresses, a coat and a few other items) here over the last 9 or so years. Service is terrible, but she knows what she's doing (although some of the other reviews are making me rethink that!), and charges a premium for that. A sign in their window says they'll do same day hemming for a fee, but when asked about turnaround time, I was told 10 days. For ONE pair of dress pants, no special requests, no original hem, just a plain ol' hem. I bargained her down to 7 days, only after I swore to her I'd be in on the exact day she promised me the pants. I paid $15 for this, when I could have had, in retrospect, a dry cleaner do it for half the price. I guess I keep coming back here because I'm scared to try some place new... read more

I was referred to this place by Macy's at Valley Fair. Macy's was unable to tailor a suit I bought there because my shoulders were "too broad." When I showed VCT my suit, they measured it in a few seconds. I thought they wouldn't get it right because of the short time they spent measuring it and fitting it. When I picked up my suit, it looked awesome, better than any of my other suits I have tailored before. The pants looked perfect! I was very impressed with how good they made my pants look. Since then I have brought my suits, pants, shirts, and t-shirts to get tailored here. I have never been disappointed with them. They charge a little on the pricey side. Maybe it isn't pricey compared to other places ($20 dollars to have a shirt tailored). I don't remember what other places charged me. It has been a long time since I have gone to another tailor. Other than that, I have no complaints. If you want tailoring done right, come to these people. The receptionist/owner is a nice Russian lady. I forgot her name. Recently, we were invited to a 50's style wedding and I was having a hard time finding a dress that would work for my body shape and fit the genre. I came with this dilemma to Irena, the owner. She sat down with me and talked about the style of dress that would fit me best (we agreed on a Monroe style), and advised me on which type of fabric I should buy. At every follow-up appointment, she made sure that I felt comfortable and that the dress was true to what I imagined. Within a very reasonable time frame my dress was complete and I was all set for the wedding. If I had a nickel for every compliment I got at the wedding, I would be swimming in nickles! Every person I talked to said they loved my dress, and I took so much pride in the fact that it was made just for me. My friend and her mom swears by this place. So you know, I had to try it, because alas all my jeans are too long and while I went to another place closer to home before, I saw the job they did on my friend's jeans and they looked awesome with original hem, inside and out. I had wanted original, but the lady actually convinced me against it, showing me that there was no detailing that needed original. So yay she saved me some money and she didn't even have to. They have rush orders for next day delivery that are relatively inexpensive. All in all it was a painless experience. I just brought in the pair pre-measured, and then later that week picked it up happy with the professional job. I will definitely go back. As a brand new customer and person in getting suits being tailored, I must say this will be my go to spot from now on or until I move out of the bay area. Heck, I'll probably still go to this place even if i do move out. Anyways, I went here to tailor a suit that I bought at express, which in fact the employee suggested me to go to, on Sunday June 8. Not knowing what needed to be done, I was well taken cared of. Unexpectedly, I was told that the suit would be ready by the Wednesday June 11th of that week. Not going to lie, I was worried that it wouldn't turn out the way how I imagined. Keep in mind that this is my very first time ever that I had a suit tailored and I must say, I am VERY satisfied with how it turned out. For all the gents out there, I highly suggest this place. In addition, they have an EXPRESS process so that if you needed a suit or dress on the same day you need it by, it's only a $10 charge, which is AMAZING. Like you, I found this place on yelp and have taken all my jeans here ever since. After having on pair hemmed several months ago, I decided that they were still a bit long and took them back. They remembered me and fixed 'em no problem (it was just my taste that had changed). Some reviews talk about poor customer service, but I've never experienced anything but smiles and timely service. I took in a nice suit that really needed more than an alteration. It needed to be "tailored" as it was a little big when I bought it four years ago. I since lost weight and I was swimming in that suit. Dina took in the pants and her work on the jacket goes beyond words. It was masterful. The suit looks tailored, I looked sharp in it. I have never had such a nice fitting suit. She also beat her time commitment and had it done a day early so that I had time to get it professionally pressed.
