This place is a work of art in action!!! They have less than 20 barstools at their counter and everyone has a view of the cooks working. It is amazing to watch how many perfectly cooked meals they can create all the while checking to make sure you have coffee, water and answering the phone when necessary!! We ordered several different skillets and eggs and bacon. The portion sizes of everything I saw coming out were huge. The ingredients were fresh and the flavors good. We would request crispier hash browns next time, but that's just a personal choice for us. read more

We dropped in to try their famous "Slinger" platter but got scared after seeing its enormous portion size. So we chose double cheeseburgers and requested medium rare. You don't know how hard it is to get a burger correctly cooked medium rare in Chicago. The beef patties were perfectly cooked medium rare and sandwiched between fresh soft bread. Service was great and it is a small diner with 12 seats at the counter. Now I know where to go for inexpensive double cheese burgers in the city. Slinger with hash browns, 2 hamburger patties, cheese , grilled onion, eggs over easily covered with our homemade chili. Chicken Wings that has 8 pcs chicken wings , served with a side of ranch or blue cheese. Bacon Cheeseburger comes with mustard, ketchup, pickles, grilled onion, lettuce and tomato. Churros fresh hot churros with a side of vanilla, or strawberry dipping sauce. Pork Taco Sandwich is an open face naan bread with cheese, pork, cilantro, onion, crema and salsa verde. Steak Skillet: a steak, onion, green pepper, mushroom and cheese. Served with hashbrowns, 2 eggs prepared your way. We got an amazing dinner and we all love their dishes. I just want to share my good and recent experience at this restaurant. To be honest, I've been here quite a few times and I've never been disappointed or regretted going to this restaurant for delicious and high-quality food. I think the only negative thing I experienced is whenever the food takes a long time before it is served, and the rest are the good things that the restaurant has. First of all, the place is always clean. The servers are polite, friendly, and attentive. When it comes to their menu, they really have good options for food for brunch, breakfast, and even lunch. I could not really tell which one was my favorite food from the spot because it was really hard to choose since every food was delicious, even their simple steak skillet, omelets, burritos, cheeseburgers, and more. Did I really never review this place? Weird. An adage to a time forgotten, Diner Grill was the place you'd go to make or not make small talk as you downed some cheap grub and a hot cup of diner coffee. I've made a handful of new friends just sitting down and shooting sh*t, including one guy who moved to nyc and I still regularly visit. The cooks are top notch, are essentially telepathic and talk to you as much or as little as you want. Food was as greasy as it could be without causing your body to explode, but that's why so many restaurant workers come here late night. Food was perfectly mediocre, Chicago fare in its truest form. Why not 5 stars? Because it feels like a breakup. The place had a fire over a year ago and while it's likely the city or alderman's fault, hasn't reopened! The owner is doing a terrible job informing their former patrons, and we demand dick burgers and chili covered has browns. If it ever does come back, the grease and wear will be gone, some of the former patrons dead, and yours truly will have moved out of Chicago. It's a sad thought but after some accumulation of grime, I might give returning to the city a second try.. ------ 12/15 update Kenny quit, the old staff was replaced new migrants and it continues to be packed. Some quotes I heard while waiting "this place has only been opened a few months," "I've only been here once before but I always get the slinger," "oh man this is gonna be epic on Instagram." Prices have heavily increased, likely due to the new clientele, no restaurant workers on break to be found. It's sad but I'm fairly certain everything the old diner grill was about is lost in the ashes. The new facade has resulted in a large downgrade. I refer to this place as "the Dinner Diner Grill" as the sign facing Irving Park says, "Diner Grill" while the sign facing Marshfield says, "Dinner Grill." I'd like to think that when ordering a sign, the owner either wasn't sure what to call the place or perhaps wasn't sure how to spell the choice he wanted. Not wanting to waste his time on such a decision, he said, "Aw fuck it, have it say both!" and then left the room to drink a case of beer and watch the Bears. The internet jukebox in the corner and the weekend post-bar crowd are the only things that detract from the authentic seediness of the joint. Otherwise you really get the feeling that this place hasn't changed much since it opened. As a matter a fact, I don't think Kenny - the paper-hatted, burger-slinging, fry-cook extraordinaire - has so much as changed his shirt since then. The fryer recently went up in flames so for the time being all orders of fries are replaced with hash browns. Your meal, which will be greasy and delicious, will be served on a paper plate and ready for you before you know it. You will pay with cash and if you come in enough, Kenny may pour you a free shot from a $7 bottle of whiskey he keeps under the counter. You will drink this out of a styrofoam cup. You know that Edward Hopper painting "Nighthawks" (you do, do a Google image search). Take that exact image and make everything a little seedier, the patrons more disheveled, the walls a little dingier and the ambiance a touch grungier. The Diner Grill is a place where unshaven bears of men come to wreck havoc on their stomachs and laugh in the face of obesity. I anxiously await the day when I'm tanked enough to order and devour "The Slinger". I've got just the place for the certificate on my fridge. Though it will be the pride in my heart that will last forever. This is a good place to go if... you enjoy going to places where eating 1500 calories in a single sitting is rewarded with a piece of paper. read more

It was a very late night and I am in the street looking for a nice casual restaurant cause I am starving and I found Dinner Grill along my way. It is a very small place has a around ten available seats in the counter and few seats outside. I was greeted by the two staff which is the cashier and the cook. Both of them is very friendly and I ordered a cheeseburger and a cup of coke. It is just a great restaurant for that night, casual and old school kinda vibe. I could see the cook actually cooking my food right in front of me and the smell was really good. The food was served hot and fresh. The cheeseburger has a fries on the sides. First bite on it was heaven, it was just so good, so flavorful and pretty big portion. I enjoyed eating it while talking to the two staff. The food is really not that good and other than the atmosphere, a far cry from quintessential diner grub. This is drunk food best served when inebriated. I would categorize this place as a 3 A.M. "Urban Legend" I love the fact that people read too much into this place. It's overdone & overblown for an obvious reason. Their is a niche for late night grease trap operations. Omgsh guys! This place was way better than expected so good we came back all 3 nights we were in town! The best food after a night out on the town (or for a quick brunch/dinner). The cook and waitress were amazing and very quick service. It's a very tiny place with maybe 10 bar seats and a tiny outside waiting area for togos. You order, they make it in front of you, you eat, pay, then go lol. In and out each night. We all got burgers the first night and they were SO good, best cheeseburger I've had in a while. Cheese fries and milkshakes were also fire. Prices were very reasonable and don't forget to tip the cook and waitress because they were both amazing and always on the go to get the food out quickly and get people in and out to try their amazingness. At 1something this place was mostly/relatively empty. Come before 2am/where almost all other late night stuff closes and get a prime spot when the show starts. Inebriated people are pretty entertaining to watch, but the best part is the lone short order cook serving the whole now-packed diner (which is just like maybe 10-15 bar seats). Such coordinated swift actions. It's so fast paced he probably has to literally plan out every action in your head and execute them without missing a beat. Or he looks like he's done it for so long it's all just second nature. Anyway, the food is what you'd expect. Hashbrowns, mediocre quality burger patties, fake American cheese, boring white bread buns. But late night greasy food... what more do you expect? It's cooked as well as it can be and in front of you in minutes. The Slinger is NOT worth it though. It's just hashbrowns + 2 cheeseburger patties + egg + really mediocre chili. I don't even think the combination works, and it's especially unimpressive if you ask for the chili on the side. I'd definitely come here again, but only under pretty unique circumstances. After a night of drinking, breakfast sounded awesome at 4am at Diner Grill. Like a moth to a flame, my body gravitated to the Open 24 Hour sign. Think greasy old school diner food where everything is cooked on the grill. It would be the perfect truck stop but instead, it's the perfect hangover joint. We ordered the Slinger - hashbrowns topped with two beef batties, two slices of cheese, two eggs, and chili. It was the perfect hangover meal but it was the most expensive item on the menu for $10.50. Next time, I'll do the single patty version on a bun. I guess they call it the Slinger since it slings its way out after digestion. It's cash only but most of the items on the menu are between $3-7. read more

OK, what others have said is true- this is a great late-night, soak up the booze in your gut spot. I've been going there a long time, and not much has changed- thank God! Things to do at the Diner Grill: 1. Order a slinger- Don't read on if you want to be suprised at the recipe... Otherwise, take a plate, cover with hashbrowns, top with three cheeseburger patties, top those with three fried eggs, top that all with a big scoop of chili. Complete and ask for your certificate to prove it! 2. If Marty the grill cook still works there- ask to see his baby picture- you won't regret it. 3. Make friends- everybody there is in the same boat as you, quit being so uptight and learn something! 4. Avoid any secret hot-sauce they may make availible to you- it'll hurt the next day coming out more than it will going in... 5. OK, it is time to set the record straight. Yes, the Slinger is a sight to behold, and an adventure to eat (or is the adventure after you eat it?). I've got my certificate and earned every bit of it. And from all the reviews, the Slinger is well known and has earned its due. However, to me the real prize of the Diner Grill is an item that I've not seen listed on the menu board. Several years ago when Rich was still the cook, I was contemplating aloud what I should eat to help soak up my evening's bender (no Slinger on this fateful night). Me: "Hmm, a bacon cheeseburger sure sounds good. But the garbage omelet is always really good too. Eggs always hit the spot at this hour." Rich: "Why don't you just have both?" Me: "Really? I can do that??" Rich: "Sure. These Irish guys (points to end of counter) do it all the time" So I offer for your consideration what Rich recommended to me on that fateful night - the bacon double cheeseburger with fried egg. Now it is not unusual to find establishments that will put an egg on your burger. I've sampled them all over. However, there is something special about the Diner's take on this that sets it apart. Perhaps it is the grease. Maybe it is how the fried egg is never overdone and the yolk pours all over the burger. The pickles are a nice touch. Certainly the bacon helps. As do the thin burger patties that allow me to go for full artery clogging action by making it a double. I'm pretty sure "Elvira" by the Oak Ridge Boys was playing that night/morning also. I don't know why the concept seemed so unusual to me on that particular night, but that is all I've ordered ever since. And while I give it 5 stars, don't be fooled - it is a diner. In a trailer. This is not Spiaggia. I do wish the crappy jukeboxes that were on the counter were still there instead of the new fancy one on the far wall.
