I had a late night craving for a breakfast burrito and finding a good breakfast burrito in Chicago has been a struggle for me. I'm originally from California where breakfast burrito's reign, so the hunt to find something remotely close and good here has been almost impossible. Considering this place is a diner serving different American fares as well, I was very surprised by the breakfast burrito here. I don't normally ask for cheese on mine, and although this one has cheese, I still really liked it. It was like a 2am order through GrubHub but arrived to my door piping hot, and the green salsa was bomb also! I was a little disappointed that I couldn't call this place on the phone though. I was willing to come pick it up myself. but couldn't through to anyone on the phone, so I just decided to get it delivered. Came after a night playing pool down the block and within 5 minutes of putting in an order, we had two plates of piping hot breakfast in front of us. My skillet of homefries and breakfast ingredients lasted me two meals, and we were able to admire from across the counter as the cook speedily started our sausage, eggs, and potatoes and plated everything. I've been twice now and both times they messed up the order. First time I ordered corned beef hash with eggs and was given a skillet with cheese over everything. I'm lactose intolerant so that day I went hungry. Today I tried them again, same order, to go this time. The order was correct but they forgot to include the toast. It's a shame because I want to like this place. I'll likely give it another shot but if they screw it up I'll just give up. read more

Went on a Sunday around brunch time and it was pretty empty. Very much a traditional diner where the food is cooked on a flat grill and fryer right in front of you. We got the breakfast burrito and buffalo chicken sandwich and both were really good! Food was fresh, and well seasoned. The breakfast burrito came with some good salsa. The food is priced well too (our meal, including fries and two coffees was just about $30) and the portions were good. It was clear they put a lot of care into the food and making sure their guests leave happy! read more

I never came here even though I'd pass by it all the time. Three of us were on our way somewhere else to eat when one of my buddies told me the story, that it had burned down and been rebuilt-sorry, I've moved around a lot so I didn't even know, I thought it had just gotten a facelift. Also, what the hell is a slinger? That pretty much settled it and we pulled a U-ey and parked. Diner Grill is like a lot of the old school diners that used to fill Chicago, Cozy Corners, Three-way Grill just unassuming places, opened late night that have gone the way of the dinosaur. I had to get the slinger, it was a pretty terrible day and I basically wanted to punish my liver with alcohol and punish my stomach with whatever a slinger was. It's nothing special, as in, there's nothing in there by itself that will amaze, and literally any diner can make it. I will say though that the whole is much more than the some of its parts: hashbrowns, cheese, chili, eggs and hamburger patties. I shoveled it all into my face and more importantly it's what kept me going out to the bars further. read more

The food was great, 2 double cheeseburgers, one French fry, one cheese fry and 2 Sprites. Total was $32 and we added $7 for a tip. I came here to eat breakfast. I was alone and no friends or co worker to eat with. Its my first time here. They have a table and chairs inside and outside to dine in. Some customer said its better to eat outside to enjoy the fresh air. The table inside is a bar stool high chair. You have a view to the kitchen and you can watch the chief while cooking your order. You will smell a good fragrance coming from the food they cook. I only order here was Strip Steak and eggs breakfast. The steak was delicious and the way it cook was perfect. I have been to this location several times. The last two times the waitresses never acknowledged me. The wouldn't take my order or offer water. The wait staff has a bad attitude. A group of queer Black/poc were harassed early Saturday morning by a group of white men, one of them claiming to be related to the owner. They were recording us without our consent and even went so far to even physically touch me. They kept harassing us and staff at the diner did absolutely nothing to defend us. Diner Grill is iconic! If you've ever had one too many in Lake View you probably have here, and depending on how many you had you probably had a slinger. There is nothing better than a greasy burger cooked on a flat top grill and Diner Grill does it right. I've actually stood behind someone waiting for one of the ten or so spots at the counter and I still wait every single time. It's nothing fancy, but all done in an old school way that reminds me of a time where simple was all that was needed. Breakfast is always good there as well, but on special nights there's nothing quite like having two burger patties covered in hash browns chili and cheese to really make the evening complete. I love this place. Rock steady. Menu selection is good and what they offer they offer well. I'm not a breakfast kind of guy, so I usually order a sandwich and fries or something of that nature. I've been here at all hours of the day. Admittedly, I've been here drunk more than I've been here sober, but (from what I remember) I've always had an excellent experience, the food is classic diner food and it is awesome, and the folks behind the counter are always friendly and I'm sure they're tolerant of the folks that enjoy a diner stop after some time at a local pub. The burgers were cooked perfect and tasted great. The cheese fries were just what we needed in our bellies. Also, the cheese has a hint of jalapeno so it was an above average cheesy goodness. The have everything from breakfast to burgers. I saw people ordering pancakes and corned beef hash. Everything was ready made and smelled delicious. They are famous for their SLINGER. One of our members just got off work and it's another member's birthday, so we couldn't settle for just nearby Maxwell St. No, what I wanted was something legendary I heard about separately from two different friends - the slinger. For my Illini peepz, I consider it the city's version of Merry Ann's stack: hash browns, onions, cheeseburger, eggs, toast...and the whole thing is drowned in chili. Not the same as sausage gravy, but quite delicious nonetheless. Happily earned my certificate of completion last night. Also, because it was my friend's birthday, they made her a special birthday treat: a giant pancake penis, with a scoop of ice cream at the tip. Might've been inappropriate to some...but those losers don't come to Diner Grill at 3am. Stopped in here this morning to grab some breakfast. There was no one in the place when I got there around 9am, but the sign said OPEN and the Yelp reviews were good so I said why not! It did not disappoint! I just got a typical eggs, bacon and toast breakfast, however when it's made right there is no better breakfast choice!! The bacon was perfectly crisp, the eggs were exactly how I ordered and the toast popped out as my meal was served. It was delicious!!! And that bacon!! I still can't get over how good it was!! The service was great. I guess when there is only one customer you'll get that, however the guy was super nice and attentive and I'm sure he's like that regardless of the number of customers! You can't really beat an old school 24/7 diner. You know the kind you can stop in at 3 am after a long night out for a greasy real deal cheeseburger and homemade chili or soup or at 8 am for a solid breakfast to start your day. The Diner Grill has been around a long time now. There are no bells and whistles, just old Chicago diner food to fit anyone's taste and budget. They used to be where the cabbies, truckers, coppers and unsavory types hung all night to hide from the world outside. All with limited counter seating. But but was a different neighborhood then. Kinda like the old Mel's Place from the 80's sitcom 'Alice'. Now a days, they appeal to the hipster, yuppie, family and even the well heeled. The Diner Grill does it right. After they experienced a fire they shut down for a while and I missed stopping in here since their reopening. They're still the same. Solid, real, delicious Chicago diner food. Except these days they remodeled to keep the same old school feel and even added a pretty dope back patio. It's super comfy and paved nicely with music softly playing so as not to disturb the neighboring homes and apartments. A classy move not considered by many restaurant patios. I gotta tell ya, these folks have managed to repackage themselves after a fire and quarantine to fit nicely right back in with a changing hood while keeping true to what they are and always have been. No small feat in today's Chicago. After taking a long walk I stumbled upon their patio. Pleased to see the results of stand by's offered I ordered what any 24 hour diner kid might order, a ham a cheese omelette, rye toast and side of links. No BS, the omelette was better than most any restaurant and the toast big, real rye and fresh. The sausage links were flattened and grilled on a flattop grill just the way the diners of yesteryear did it. All while the Bon Jovi soundtrack 'Never Say Goodbye' played bringing me back to my youth and memories of late nights with my girl or buddies at a place just like the diner. In fact, we did come here back then. The food? Excellent! The ambiance? As good and so complimentary to this spot. The crowd was a nice mix of families and neighborhood kids. The servers were smiling and friendly. On the menu they serve up all the oldies but goodies and a few new items for the new kid on the block. I peeked a girl across from me having the chili cheese fries. I tell ya, I'm hooked, they won't get rid of me now. They may have to tell me to go home at some point in the near future.
