Have you ever called your favorite pizza place and asked for delivery for you and 200 high school marching band students? I did! Dion's is the best pizza in New Mexico, hands down, but the Las Cruces crew went above and beyond to take care of us for our event; Tournament of Bands at NMSU. And to add to the nuttiness of pizza and salad for 200, add in feeding all of them outside and in less than 30 minutes! (we made finals and had to go right back in to perform again...). My husband and I just moved to the area and our friends took us here raving about the pizza. Coming from the Seattle area, and having every type of amazing food available, we were left wondering how anyone could call this place a favorite. The selection left a lot to be desired unless you wanted to build your own pizza. We opted for a very basic pizza, and were incredibly disappointed. The sauce had absolutely no taste to it. They may as well have just spread plain tomato sauce on the crust, because that's what it tasted like... boring and no seasoning. It was incredibly greasy, and not just "it has a lot of cheese" grease. The crust itself was greasy, as were all the toppings. Basically, you couldn't pick up the piece of pizza with your hands because it was so saturated in grease. We also ordered a chef salad, which isn't really that hard to get wrong. Our salad came with whole pieces of deli meat on it. I didn't realize a salad would require a knife. They also covered the entire salad in an inch thick of cheddar cheese. I like cheese, but that was just ridiculous. There is so much better pizza in the world, and I'm hoping this is not the best of what Las Cruces has to offer. Day eight of our road trip to San Diego, stop 7. About thirty miles out from our Las Cruces hotel, and we were already talking about how cool it was gonna be to just chill in the room with a pizza, some beer, and watch some tv. Having already booked with Expedia, it was all prepaid and ready to go. Took no time at all to check in with the friendly front desk man, and we were in our room and scheming our dinner. Didn't take long to find out that: 1) there is great local pizza 2) the great local pizza doesn't deliver Boo!!! Well, after conceding to the idea that we, meaning me, have to drive to pick it up... I call in an order to Dion's Pizza. Napoli 12" with sauce, and a Greek salad with tomatoes and onions. The pizza was worth the drive for sure. This pizza was a great investment, and I know pizza... my family has been doing pizza restaurants for twenty years. As for the pie shop itself, they've got a bunch of locations, and the pie is good. But I will say this: I prefer my pies to come from places that aren't that polished. I know it doesn't have anything to do with how the pie tastes, but there's a certain romance to a mom and pop pizza shop. Like I would eat a Pizza Hut pizza from one of the old and busted pizza houses versus their new and improved shiny and lame spots. But that's just me. The hopeless romantic. The best hand tossed pizza in town!! Great crust, wonderful sauce, and excellent cheese. I felt it necessary to update my review based on some of the comments posted. You cannot compare Dions to Papa Johns and Unos. I would argue that this is an "apples to oranges" comparison. Unos makes great deep dish and flat bread pizzas. If you desire a great pan pizza, especially for a chain, go to Unos. Papa Johns, well, Papa Johns makes pizza, with relatively low quality ingredients. If you are low on cash, and not particularly picky, go to Papa Johns. If you want a great hand tossed pizza, go to Dions. The slate baking process leaves slight burned marking on the crust. These burns are part of the flavor of a slate baked pizza. In addition, Dions also uses quality dough and real cheese. As others have stated, if you have lived in a large metropolitan area and have experienced more than just delivery pizza, Dions is up there with the best. read more

Dear lord the sandwiches are SO GOOD. I always get a large pastrami sandwich, eat half, and save the other half for another meal. I am always sure to order it with fresh fruit (surprisingly good) and Greek dressing to dip it in (don't forget this!!) The pizza is also really good. It's slightly greasy, but good nonetheless. I would call in your order because it is a generally long wait (hence the four stars) when you order in the restaurant. They also have a drive through windows specifically for call in orders. We drive from El Paso at least once a month to get our Dion fix. Im from NY and love a good slice. All ive had off the menu is pepperoni pizza, garlic bread and lemonade. The garlic bread doesnt taste much like garlic but its okay. Staff could be a bit noisy due to the open kitchen concept buut i suppose its okay, at least they are having a good time. read more

I was thoroughly impressed with the pizza here. Had dinner with the family and we ordered two medium pizza's with beef. Let me tell you, it was really great pizza. The beef topping was exquisite! It was real beef unlike ANY other beef topping I have ever had at any other pizzeria. The cheese on the pizza was to die for! It was very delicate and seemed to melt in your mouth. The pizza sauce was perfect as it incorporated the ingredients beautifully on the masterfully made pizza dough that was a true foundation. I will definitely be coming back. The Kansas BBQ chicken pizza was a real treat. The sauce was mild and didn't have an overpowering BBQ flavor...just right. The crust impressed me the most. Not too thin, not too thick. It had a thin crispy outer layer with a moist almost chewy inside to sink your teeth into...very flavorful! The roast beef sandwich was complimented with a side of Italian Dressing dipping sauce and green chiles. Free drink refills were great especially since it was 100+ degrees outside. Very kid friendly...they have a little steps and a glass window where kids can watch employees make the pizza. During our dining experience, Dion's even sponsored a community event where they handed out free t-shirts and catered to a party of 40+ people. read more

Dion's is always a great place to go eat when you can't decide on what you want. The salads are good an honestly pretty big. The subs are amazing who would have known. The pizza is good and I don't even like pizza. I would recommend getting the pastrami sandwich with the greek dressing! Trust me you won't regret it. Estaban nails it for me: it's OK, but no big shakes. Papa John's, overall, is probably better, Chicago Pizza Uno on Telshor is definitely better (if you like the thicker Chicago style). But Papa John's is not a restaurant experience, so if you want to go out, it doesn't work. Dion's is less expensive than Uno, that's its only advantage. A good enough place, but not great. read more

You can order a slice of pizza with whatever toppings you want, because they basically take a cheese slice then add stuff on top and cook it a bit. So yeah, the cheese is under the toppings. Dion's is decent pizza. I'm originally from Chicago, so I set the bar for my pie's pretty high, and so far this is the best I've had in the area. Of course, it doesn't compare to the pizza you can get up north, but what do you expect in a small town in New Mexico? My wife ordered the turkey salad, and it was very good, the vegetables were generous, fresh, and came with a surprisingly good raspberry vinagrette.
