by Dane Youssef Nowadays, in this economy, everyone loves and lives for "The $.99 Cent Store." They're popping up everywhere, like zits all over a teen's body. When you can't make it to any wholesale... Seems like a Godsend, just plain Heaven-sent. But beware--you get what you pay for. Yeah, there's some good junk here. Just beware--there's the "bad junk" here, too. Crap. The junk food here is pretty good--nice and cheap. Stuff like cookies, soda, bottled water and energy drinks. You can buy generic soda by the case for next to nothing. Toiletries are pretty solid--shaving cream, disposable razors, rubbing alcohol, cotton swabs, toothbrushes, toothpastes, feminine hygiene products and the like. There's nail polish, greeting cards, towels and such. Everything that could and would be sold dirt-cheap. Every consumer's favorite words. Just like at your local swap meet, stay the living Hell away from the socks (you're better off wrapping tissue paper around your feet), condoms (they're the kind that guarantee you'll get somebody pregnant), shoes (go to Pay-Less), underwear and anything that you'd want to have lasting use. The place is perfect if you want to buy almost anything disposable (except condoms). The tools for cosmetic care like tweezers, nail clippers, nail files and combs and brushes are pretty solid. Know what you're getting... If you're not sure, get expert opinion. I must have gone on a bad day. The place reeked of ant spray. Or was it petroleum products? Either way, I left with a headache BUT found what I was looking for! I agree with other yelpers, stay away from the food aisles and the "cookware." The cookware looks like it would impart lots of BPA or toxic chemicals into your food. It's kinda grungy, but the guy at the counter was super friendly. I love Daiso, the Japanese discount stores more! read more

Prices are fair and I dare say the product line is a cut above any dollar store. The grocery section is immaculately clean albeit humble. I've never bought a product here that I thought was in any way suspect. Fair cigarette prices, cell phone accessories, tools, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, pots and pans, rugs, sunglasses, toys, balloons, freaking everything. It's my go-to place whenever I need an anything. Great guys running the place too, very helpful and friendly. read more

I just stopped by this store on my way home from the beach and I must say I was pleasantly surprised! They sell the usual home cleaning/personal care necessities that I normally purchase at 99 cent store but they sell a whole lot more than just that. They have a wide variety of everything, from food items, stationary and backpacks, pots and pans and more. But what I did find that I was extremely happy with was a whole section of Filipino food/treats! I walked out with Sukang Iloco, Coconut Jam, Pan De Sal, and Puto mix. Yay! read more

I purchased some bad pomegranates at this store and took them back and the owner had the nerve to try and convince me that the pomegranate sees should be white and not red!!! He said where he came from they are all types of colors. I told him that those are "home grown" American kind and we're not use to black or other color pomegranates. He sounded quite ridiculous just to not return $2.00 back to me. The cashier was extremely rude AND THIS IS NOT A DOLLAR STORE. The dollar store at Marina Square is a REAL dollar store and the DAISO Japanese store is real but this is just a store selling cheap Chinese items sometimes for the price you'll pay at a regular store. Things that should be a dollar is $1.49 or $1.99 in this store. They were first here but certainly not the best so be weary if you have to return an item. This store has improved dramatically. They carry household basics, plenty of party supplies, hardware items, clothing, luggage and whatever they can buy a truckload of cheap. I've seen small appliances, OTC medicine, sewing supplies, oriental rugs, accessories for small electronics, baby supplies. It is all kept well organized, clean. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable about what they do and do not have. Their inventory changes, so it is worthwhile to visit the store often.. I've been a regular shopper wth Discount City for over 10 years and they never once have done anything to dissapoint me. sometimes I would have a request for a specific food item that they ran out of and most of the time they'd be able to aquire it for me. they never have an attitude and are always friendly and I've never felt rushed, including when I'm there with a few questions regarding my MetroPCS service or phone. There have been some new faces here and there but they always are just as friendly and courteous as the people they replaced. One specific employee has recently gone far and above what you would call customer service for me, and I HAD to write this review (as I told him I would!). A few weeks ago I was ready to get a new phone with MetroPCS and I went to speak to Mo who has been working there for some years now, as I know that they buy used phones and there was a huge sale going on and I was able to work out a great deal by being able to do a straight trade. I didn't think it through at first because they didn't have any in stock, so Mo had arranged to get more later that day and I was to come back the next day. The next day comes and unfortunately he was very sad to say (actually he said I could hit him if I wanted to LOL) he was unable to get the phones the day before do to a miscommunication with the distributor and he asked me where I worked. I was not sure where he was going with this and I he told me that he would DRIVE TO MY WORK and deliver my phone to me!! All I had to do was pay for the new bill and he would take care of everything, which he did. I am EXTREMELY pleased with Mo, and also Joey as well as the other folks working there. Joey as well is excellent at customer service and went into major detail with my wife when she got her Blackberry a few years ago, never rushing her and answered every question she had. We go there once a week. The staff are really nice, polite, and helpful especially the manager and CASHIERS*. They make shopping there so much easier and fun with their jokes. They have a great variety of items to choose from with different, low prices at high quality and the foods are never expired and the produce is always fresh. Rude customer service. Do not spend your money here. Apparently they "don't need your business," anyway. Yes, that is what the man at the register yelled at myself and the three people I was with today. We came in mainly for some brown kraft paper that I have bought from them on two other occasions. A friend and I must have cleaned them out the last time we were there because we bought 15-20 rolls between the two of us and since then they haven't restocked. I know this because I went back several times and asked about it when I couldn't find any. Today, I went in a group of four and although we were disappointed at the fact that they still haven't restocked we decided to walk around and marvel at what random things we might find interesting or handy enough to purchase, because that is usually when you find things you didn't even realize you wanted or needed. That's when I remembered seeing vinyl the last time I was there and I am currently in need of some vinyl for one of my projects. Though Beverly's and Jo-ann Fabrics are usually where I would go to buy vinyl, I figured since I was there I might as well check if they had the vinyl I needed. They didn't have it and that was fine with me because I am aware that they are not a fabric store. So no kraft paper and no vinyl, but I was still in the mood to look around. My friends were doing the same. In the end we all had our random things and were ready to make our purchases. On our way to the register we got distracted by some hats. My friends were trying on some hats but put them all back where they found them when they were done. I found one of those super cheesy, fake, plastic, hairpieces, and poked some fun at one of my friends because she has thin hair and it's one of the things we mess with her about and we got really giggly, because we all found it funny, including her. When I was done teasing her I put the fake hair piece exactly where I found it. We were slowly working our way down the aisle and closer to the register while stopping to point out different things and suddenly one of the guys who works there walks down the aisle we were in and rudely exclaimed, "Don't make a mess. We are trying to clean!" We looked at each other in confusion and one of my friends, in a civil manner, responded to him telling him that were were putting everything back after we handled them but the man just repeated himself. At this point we all decided to put what we planned to buy down and leave because we didn't feel that we had done anything that would merit such rudeness. As we were walking out of the store one of my companions was so upset that she said, "That's why we aren't buying anything!" Then the other man present who was working the register behind us yelled, "Good! We don't need your business, anyway!" I played the entire experience in my head over and over again but still cannot understand why the man who told us not to make a mess in their store felt compelled to do so in the first place. There are tons of .99/1.00 stores with way friendlier staff that always have the things I need for my craft projects. I have an entire room specifically dedicated to my sewing and crafts so I am always on the lookout for supplies. Even if Discount City is in closer proximity to my home than others, I will never set foot in that place again. Nor will anyone I know... I advise the rest of you do the same. read more
