Not a hostel as far as I could tell. Though it appears on hostelbookers, there is no evidence of dorms and definitely no rosy-cheeked Swedes giggling in common areas. That being said, this has got to be one of the cheapest places in town. My room was fine. The walls were paper-thin but at $40 a night so must be the profit margins. Mgmt was not terribly friendly to us. Otherwise everything was fine. -1 for marketing as a hostel when it's not. -1 for unfriendly air. +3 for price, location, and adequate quality. read more

We were here to attend a wedding and needed last minute reservations online. When I arrived at the designated time and older gentlemen through a glass window appeared to process our reservation . It went fairly smoothly until he shouted out "your not going to cook in the room are you? " I said "what" and he repeated the same line again. I finally realized because we were Asian we were being profiled for cooking in hotels. He shouted I'll charge an extra $200 if you cook. I just said no and proceeded to my room. It wasn't until later that I started to get a little angry at what had transpired. The room was old but clean. Nice plants outside. Cant really say much else. I just returned from a vacation trip to visit family in the Monterey area. Our room was reserved before I read the reviews, and after reading them, I expected the worst. When we arrived, check-in was quick and pleasant. Our 3 Queen Bed room was clean and quiet. This is a quaint motel on the edge of Seaside and Del Rey Oaks so it was a quick drive to Pacific Grove and Monterey. It was perfect for a place to sleep and stash gear while sightseeing for the day. Due to Covid, the lobby was closed so coffee wasn't available. We went to the Starbucks in the Safeway across the street, and had breakfast at Black Bear Diner down Fremont Boulevard. My boyfriend and I agreed that we would stay there again. If you like modern, upscale amenities, this is not the place for you. If you want a cute motel with clean rooms and comfortable beds that is close to restaurants and highway access, then you should consider this place. read more

Small little place not far from the wharf and other parks. The gentlemen does it by himself and couldn't find our reservation. Kept having to check to see if rooms were occupied. About 30 Mins later we finally got a room. Single bed room, needs updating , bed wasn't the best and for 170 bucks not during peak season is could be a lot better. This hotel is awful. The management staff is very rude. When I brought up the fact their own website shows a continental breakfast was included with your stay he called me a lair, then he said it wasnt his web site. When I showed him it was his site he said it was included last year in January but said nothing more. They also charge you completely upfront for your stay, not at the end when checking out. Yes, for a dive motel this one is perfect. The room was $40/night and it was bigger then I thought it would be. The area was located conveniently close to most of the attractions Monterey has to offer. Just 3 miles away... The room was clean. It's nothing spectacular, but it's perfect for a night or two especially for those of us who go out all night and pretty much only use the room to sleep and shower. The only thing I didn't like was that they advertise continental breakfast and it sucks. It's stale cereal, burnt coffee, and cheap pastries. We skipped breakfast. I would recommend this motel to any young couple or group of friends looking for a quick place to stay that is cheap and still nice. They also cleaned the room every day, which I really didn't expect. Also, it has been newly remodeled. I recommend. read more

I was a little apprehensive about this hotel because the price was so reasonable compared to other hotels in the area. However, I was well pleased with my stay here. The grounds are very clean and well manicured. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the hotel was quiet. The room had a ceiling fan and a heater/ac that worked very well. I liked the wood panel sloped ceiling in the room. The room had a refrigerator and the usual toiletries and the towels and sheets were fresh and clean!The manager on site was very accommodating and the hotel offered free coffee, pastries or muffins and fruit in the morning. Overall, i would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Monterrey area. read more

This place is adequate. Generally clean and quiet, with a simple breakfast. Price is just right. I've been here twice, first the TV did not work, so I was moved to a different room, OK; next time the tub drained slowly. Real Spartan accomodations. So far I am lucky not seeing any bugs. Small ref; no coffee. Bring your own soap and shampoo; I'd rather not use theirs. As long as I don't see any insects, bugs, vermin, I am OK. read more

Very nice staying place for budget price. The room was tidy, bed was comfy, tub was clean, toilet sanitized, towels clean. Fridge, hair dryer, TV, air conditioner were there in my non-smoking Queen room. Parking was available right in front of the room. Nice flowers in the alley outside. Good lighting in room and near mirror. Check in was smooth. Had a good one night stay. Just one thing, towels were hard, but that's oki, you are not staying in a five star where they change and throw your towels regularly. They were clean though. Breakfast had milk, juice, muffin, coffee, cereal, one more tasty bread thing (I don't know the name). Check out was very simple, just put the key in the drop box outside the reception. Overall the experience was great for the budget as we planned to stay there for going to big sur (accommodation there are much much much expensive, that's a waste of money as this place is just 40-45 min drive from big sur) I would surely recommend it!! read more

If you need a quick, cheap place to crash, this place will suffice. I was in town for the Big Sur Half Marathon and needed a cheap place to stay. Since about all the places were booked for the night, found this place with a simple search. It was like 50 bucks for a room, owned by Indian people. I made the reservation online, they have a continental breakfast, but it's not much. The room was pretty clean, but I still pulled the blankets off and just used the sheets. I mean it's the true definition of you get what you pay for. If you're not high maintenence, this place does the job =) I was happy with my stay. read more

For a dive motel this is one of the better ones in town. I stayed here when I first moved to town since the place I was renting was not ready to move into yet. It was very inexpensive, cleaner than you would expect. I did not try their continental breakfast. The rooms were decent, the bathroom was relatively small though. But again for a cheap dive this is a great place to stay. They offer wi-fi and if you don't need much other than a place to sleep this is the place to be. It wasn't to difficult to find, but I did come from the direction of Del Rey Oaks, it might be more confusing coming from Monterey or off highway 1. read more

Budget facilities at a non-budget price. It's close to Laguna Seca Raceway and we have stayed multiple times over the years. Very clean but bedspreads and blankets are stained and towels are paper thin. Used to be a great bargain but has gone downhill. Don't expect to be staying there in the future. read more

Owner lives here and manages the place. He's not friendly AT ALL. Rooms are alright. Clean enough. Door knob to the bathroom fell off, and the shower doesn't work well. Also, the internet was so slow it wasn't usable. Other than that the place was alright... The owner left a very bad taste though, wouldn't come back, even for the price. read more

crashed here for a night on a coastal weekend roadtrip. the place looked clean until I was pushed off the bed and found someone's nail cuttings on the floor -- gross! other than that everything else appeared clean. the bathroom bare bones but ***hairdryer*** YAY! take your own shampoo and, well, soap because I wouldn't trust the dispenser provided in the bath. also, it seems as though the bathroom walls are not coated properly with the correct paint because after one, uno, shower the place is a misty mess -- so in addition to the fan open the window...that is if you like your TP to be dry; otherwise leave the window closed and have damp TP to use for the rest of your stay. Also, a flat sheet is used for the fitted sheet which is not comfortable if you toss and turn. read more

Such a charming little motel for a good price. There are tons of pretty flowers & patio chairs outside. The room was extremely clean & had nice furniture. The bathroom could use some renovation, but it was good sized & also very clean. The heavy curtains made it easy to sleep in on a lazy Sunday morning. I didn't check out the continental breakfast, though I highly recommend "Grandma's Kitchen" which is right up the road. Grandma's breakfast was delicious! read more

Do not even consider this place. Absolutely terrible!!! Crashed here for a night while on a road trip and wow...terrible service, the room smelled like S#*@, the beds were extremely uncomfortable, and the walls were paper thin. You can hear a fart coming from room next door. The hotel manager was soooo bad at customer service. Everytime I would ask a question, it was responded in a very negative tone and he would raise his voice like he was offended with my question. Also, it is pretty difficult to find as Freemont St. and Freemont Blvd are the same street. You think your drinking the wrong direction because the numbers go up but then all of a sudden it turns into Freemont Blvd. When we called up the motel, the on staff manager (which btw spoke TERRIBLE english) gave us such horrible directions, we got lost 3 times. Man, all I can say is don't waste your time or money at this place. Wouldn't suprise me if they rented rooms by the hour for passing by bums and.....mistresses. Spend the extra money and go to a Best Western or another motel. Avoid this place like the plauge!!!!! read more

DO NOT GO HERE! I have to agree with the other reviews that the owners are terribly unaccommodating. When making the reservation, there was a terrible language issue. Closer to the date of the reservation, I needed to cancel some nights & a couple of rooms. They were not very happy, but it was 3 days before, so well within the 48 hour policy. Then I had to call back 2 days before the reservation & cancel 1 more room. We went back and forth as the woman couldn't seem to understand what I was saying. Got there & we had to pay for our 2 night stay up front, which I'd never seen before. Then the next day, I was summoned to the office & told I had to pay for the other room that I had cancelled. I tried to explain I had cancelled but to no avail. They said I didn't cancel it & had to pay for it. We tried to talk to them again the next day, but with no better results. We ended up paying for a room that no one stayed in. For the $109 that they made off of me on that empty room, they lost us as customers forever & risked a bad Yelp review, which they deserved. There are a ton of hotels on Fremont Blvd, so competition is stiff. Really bad business decision. read more

Hmmm, disappointed on this place regarding on our stay as a family. We stayed for one night in a suite (3 queen beds) room. Details: 1 bed in main room with the bathroom and tv, another room with the 2 other bed, where my parents, grandma, bro and sister in law are staying, and this room has a door of its own. We were relaxing, sippin' some wine, having good healthy conversation in that room, and my family and me are on the main room watching tv and relaxing with the kiddos. When all of a sudden someone started knocking on the wall where my parents were and didnt pay no mind at first, thinking maybe someone was playing around (it happens). A min later the front desk called us and telling us to keep it down because the people next door cant sleep!!! (These people are on the other side of the wall where my parents and grandma are in) so, we were confused of how loud as they say we are because they were just having a normal conversation (no shouting nor laughing) even the TV is not even that loud, but to be nice we turn everything down, where the conversation turn into whispering, watching tv that i cant barely hear. After 5-10 mins another phone ring from the front desk, asking us to keep it down etc....and am like "what?" And this lady was extremely rude. Bad customer service. We wanted to ask for an extra blanket cause my grandma was freezin'. But i changed my mind cause my sister in law told me that she was asking for extra towel for her hair, the front desk asked her "why do you need extra towel?" My sister in law felt like its really personal for her to ask that....really!!! read more

Sorry this place is only for those who don't mind overly used, worn bed sheets , and shower mats and bathroom Windows that open but fall into the bathroom with a lovely view of the replaced toilets and or sinks hidden on the side of the building. This must be the cheapest motel to rent and in the Seaside area of Monterey CA. I rolled the thin bedspread back as we all know hotels and motels rarely clean them or their blankets only, to find cigarette holes and extremely worn out sheets. I quickly went to the one man office manager, maid, cereal and coffee maker to replace what I assumed was a mistake and over site by the one man room cleaner /manager/owner only to receive a sheet with a larger hole and figured you get what you pay for. Oh and he slammed the door as if he was upset to be bothered . The only thing that saved me from jumping ship immediately was that I didn't pay for the room or choose the motel, as it was a gift by my elderly father along with the rented car and the family drive from Los Angeles for the weekend to bring my daughter to orientation at her new School Monterey Bay college she will attend in a month. detail about the motel. The only great thing I can say is they had a great air conditioner that was on the floor near the window that I had to turn on and off throughout the evening because it was extremely cold then hot then cold then hot. Just a review that hopefully warns you about exactly what you are getting. The picture makes it look like a cozy garden location. Though the flowers were beautiful that were planted along the parking lot walls and a few hanging from the sidewalk entering your room. No garden, a unhappy owner if you asked for a sheet without holes but we dealt for two days and drove the coast home. Hopefully you get the real picture of what to expect read more

The shower is really controlled well for California drought. Also, the internet was so slow it wasn't usable. The "garden" is just flowers planted around the parking space. Booked with discovery inn for my small family vacation. Customer service is very bad, manager/owner needs more training or needs to smile more. Pls this hotel is all bad and the breakfast sucks, the rooms are clean and nice but some appliance need upgrade. WARNING: manager is very rude, no respect and no customer service at all. Will Never go back and will warn all visitor. The worst part, after checking out manager said everything is ok. After 1 HR while my family was enjoying the beach, the hotel called and said we stole 3 pillows. You kidding right ! I am a nurse and my wife is a business manager, you think i would steal 3 pillows lol. This place make me sick and I came her to relax not deal with bad management from a hotel and manager. Power outage posted at front desk from 1230 to 630pm. It's 745 and still no power, we are now late for Laguna seca event because it's too dark to get ready and of course no warm shower!! We paid 150$ for 1 night and we can't even wash the filthy hotel sheets off of us!! The room smelled terrible like someone forgot to flush the toilet. Big stains on pillow cases and sheets! One bed was soft the second was hard! There was a rusty shopping cart outside the tiny window in our bathroom (very inviting). I will now go ask for money back so hopefully I can revise this horrible review! Otherwise go very very far away or don't pay over 45$ and call about power outages before you book!!! read more

Hey for the Price it is a great deal. The rooms were clean. The staff was very friendly. Everything was a cheap taxi drive a way about 3.5 miles to wharf .Yellow cab was always there in 5 minutes never charged us more 8 dollars a trip.I would go back again. read more

I live in the area but my apartment was being worked on so I had to be out of the house for one night and decided to stay here because it was the cheapest ($140/night). Luckily it was just one night. It's a small area, about 20 rooms in total, and the rooms are also small. They gave me a room for 4 (don't know why) so it had 2 queen beds, but if you want to actually fit four people in there it seems like it would be crowded. It's very simple with all the basics: a refrigerator, hair drier, TV, coffee in the lobby. It was very clean, which was a plus. Even though you are not allowed to smoke my room smelled like someone had been smoking in there. There was just a funny smell in the air. I also thought the customer service was awful. The man at the front desk was very unfriendly and a rude, and no one working there seemed to be too friendly. I almost felt weird being there. Overall, if you are just passing through and/or just need a place to crash for a night it is fine, especially for the price since it is one of the cheaper places to stay in the area. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you are on vacation or plan to stay more than a night. read more

I travel to Monterey for a martial arts event every June and have stayed at the Discovery Inn about half a dozen times over the years. It's clean, conveniently located (about a 10 min drive from Cannery Row/The Monterey Bay Aquarium) and reasonably priced. There are few amenities but I did notice on my last trip that the rooms now have free wifi. read more
