Ever since a national Indo-Chinese restaurant chain pulled the plug, this space has changed names a few times but tried to retain a similar style of cuisine. District 6 Gastrobar and Kitchen is the latest business to give it a shot at the Village at Mira Mesa. The District 6 designation refers to the following San Diego neighborhoods... Clairemont Mesa, Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, North Clairemont, and Rancho Peñasquitos. The most significant change to the layout involved the removal of some seating on one side of the suite. It was replaced with a few pool tables to create a more interactive atmosphere. I sat at the front bar where happy hour specials were in effect. Three appetizers, beers, wines, and spirits were sold at a discounted price from 2 to 6 pm on Monday to Friday. The regular food menu contained a mix of American and Indian fusion items. For example, there were three types of sliders... Pulled Pork, Chimichurri Beef, and Aloo (Potato) Tikki. I picked the Samosas and the Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings from the HH specials as my dine-in fare. Two potato-filled fritters were served with a cup each of mint-cilantro and tamarind. The pastry dough was thicker and the exterior was less crispy than I have tasted elsewhere. Five wings coated with a dry salt and pepper rub were in a basket with two carrot sticks, a couple of celery stalks, and a cup of ranch dressing. I don't think I have had salt and pepper wings like this naked version as there was no batter or crust coated on the meat. For a meal later in the evening, I chose the Chili Garlic Noodles packed in a takeout box. Thin, eggless noodles were stir fried with chicken (my protein choice), shredded vegetables, garlic, and chili. On a spiciness scale of 1 to 10, it was prepared at about a 'three' so you could taste a faint amount of heat. I did appreciate that the noodles were not coated with a heavy amount of oil. I wonder if the Indo-Chinese concept may be futile with the frequent turnover that has occurred at this spot. Several neighboring eateries have been more stable so the changes here can't be pinpointed to location. The guy who took our order said that several of the dishes we were eyeing were small & that we would need to order more. Which we absolutely should not have done. The noodle dishes, which we bought way too many of, are big & can be split among 3-4 people. Most of the dishes we ordered were pretty good & I do recommend their food.
