I can see why this place might be a cool stop if you're out clubbing, but I think I'll find other places to have a Happy Hour in the future. The aquarium on top of the bar is really cool. I guess the team that designed it are former aquarists from Monterey Bay Aquarium which explains the neat design! I also feel terrible for the fish, since I'm also a member of the aquarium and I hope the noise and lights and mermaids don't bother the fish too much! Obviously my stars have nothing to do with the fishes welfare but all to do with the service and lack of beer selection on tap. There were 6 tap options, Blue Moon, Stella, Cider, Black IPA, regular IPA and a Pale Ale from Sierra Nevada. I wish there was something between hoppy and light. We were two of four to six people total in the joint, and after we finished our first round we were hoping for another before heading out to attend an event. We waited and waited and finally were served again. I felt more like an annoyance than a patron. Maybe we'll be back to bring friends to see the design of the place, but I had higher hopes that it would be a nice place to attend Happy Hour in the future. I like this bar. It is pretty upscale with high drink prices. That being said, the bar tenders are friendly and skilled. The make any drink you want and will even put a fancy spin on them. I prefer to go when there is a Mermaid show. They are only there certain times, so I would call ahead if you plan to go to see the show. read more

You know what I love about Dive Bar? 1. No Cover 2. Mix of crowd (although a lot of 20 somethings, there are enough of us over 30's there to feel comfortable among our own) 3. Great service (door guy, security, bartenders all friendly) 4. Amazing atmosphere- I love the dark lighting, you can come in for afternoon happy hour and not know the sun is shining outside. I love feeling like I'm in a vamp bar (haha). 5. MERMAID! 6. Great mix of music (they played everything from alternative to hip hop in their rotation, enough to keep my friends entertained). 7. If you get hungry, they'll let you bring pizza from Pizza Rock next door! I have been in twice, once for happy hour with friends and once with friends on a Friday night. Happy hour was great during the week because there was enough room to relax and enjoy the place as a lounge. Friday night is jumping but not too insane where you won't be able to enjoy your drinks without getting bumped around. My boyfriend and I visited Dive Bar on Friday night of Halloween weekend. The place had about 30 people (most people were just standing around watching the mermaid) and plenty of staff at the time, but somehow we had to wait several minutes to be helped. We asked one person for help and they ignored us. We then found a drink menu, picked out what we wanted and ordered. They have a list of about 10-15 fancy cocktail drinks (I don't remember the names of the two we picked out) and I believe they are about $10 each. When we ordered, we had to wait about five minutes or so for the drinks to be finished. The bar tender helping us did not know the product and had to refer to the menu to make our drinks. This isn't a huge deal- but if you have specialty drinks on your menu, it seems like you should know how to make them, or at least be able to make them somewhat quickly. The bartender didn't say a word to us before or after making the drinks- he didn't even give us a total or receipt (we used a Groupon). The drinks were very "watered-down" tasting and didn't seem to contain very much alcohol at all. For $10 a drink, it seems like they should be good. The descriptions on the menu didn't seem to match what we ended up receiving (I don't know if the bartender was bad or what the case was). Dive Bar doesn't have much seating, unless you have bottle service. The whole place is very long and narrow. The decorations for halloween were pretty nice and it was cool seeing the mermaid swim around with all of the fish. But even the nice decor couldn't win me over. Sadly, I don't think I'll be returning to Dive Bar unless someone in my group really really wants to see the mermaid. read more

What a spot! The above-bar aquarium with live mermaids was described to me, but I wasn't quite prepared for the awesomeness of it. It blew me away! The decor is an interesting mix of high-end (chandeliers, wing chairs, sleek bamboo tables) and dive-y (flatscreen TVs showing sports, brick walls). Can't decide if I like it or not. In the middle of the space there's a ragged fake concrete wall with rusty-ish metal bits sticking out. When I wondered aloud why they made that particular decorating decision, my boyfriend pointed out that it's supposed to denote a "hole-in-the-wall." Ha! That's so clever that I forgave them for how ugly it is. Don't dive here. Lets play discrimination and only let certain people in if they fit the profile. Group of Mexicans not let in. Other minorities were not let in as well. But a white guy was let in and way before 1am. Oh after 1am more people were let in. But I thought 1am was the cutoff as i was told. Tried to get in twice 12:30 and again at 12:55. Was given two different answers for being turned away. Everybody that was turned away seemed to have dressed appropriately. Clearly I thought this practice was done with in Sacramento in the past. This bar is cool for the aquarium above the bar and at certain times and days a mermaid makes an appearance. You always can tell when there are new people at the Dive Bar because they'll be the ones with cameras out to get a picture of the mermaid. There's a Foosball table in the back, couches, tv's on the wall. On some nights there's live music but there's no room for dancing and the performers can be hit or miss. You can go casual or dressy- everything goes. Drinks are pretty reasonable and not too weak. There's a decent selection of beers on tap but not too many to choose from. The first time I came here was in 2011 when it first was opening (I think?). I was less than impressed by almost everything: - the crowd: some dude asked me if it was weird that he brought his toothbrush to the bar? Yeah. That's the last pick-up line you want to use, brosef. - the bar: took me 20 minutes to get a drink. And even then, some random guy at the bar noticed how long I'd been waiting and tracked a bartender down for me. My best friend ended up shoving her tongue in this guy's mouth, so at least someone won. - the music: NICKELBACK. I shit you not. So, this past weekend when friends suggested we head there, I wasn't really excited. It was moderately better than the first time I went but it still wasn't great. The giant ring on my left hand ring finger probably kept most of the creepers away, so no one was throwing weird pick-up lines at me. I didn't order drinks myself so I can't speak to if that improved, personally, but other friends said similar things. The music was MUCH better though. Yes, it's pretty cool for a swanky hallway space (and that's pretty much it) with a big fish tank above the bar, but this place is supposed to be all about the mermaids, and they definitely don't have that dialed. Drove over two hours to celebrate for my birthday with friends on Sat 2/12/11 and waited in a long line just for NO MERMAIDS. To make matters worse, the bartenders kept MISLEADING by saying that they should be out any minute. MANAGEMENT DID A TERRIBLE JOB of addressing the situation a couple days later by doing nothing more than emailing a few words about a mermaid being sick. If this place is all about the mermaids, they better do better than that if they want to keep patrons happy and stay in business. Considering the trouble myself and friends went to in order to be there for my birthday celebration, some gesture about caring about their patrons (even just a coupon for a free drink or two) would have gone a long way and saved them a bad review. I bartend, have helped run client-based companies and have frequented bars in San Francisco, San Diego, San Jose and further. I've seen enough to know that their establishment won't last more than a year if they don't make their patrons feel taken care of. Hopefully this is a temporary thing due to them being so new. Otherwise, go while you have the chance as this place seems likely to be short-lived and go during the week when you won't wait and hour and know that you'll be taking your chances. read more

I think people assume mermaid = classy. But with the name of the bar being Dive Bar, you would assume a dive bar. Out of town friends of mine came to visit and when I said "Dive Bar" they thought of a dive bar, but were pleasantly surprised at what it actually was. The owners themselves even said the concept for the bar was a play on the name. So you just gotta take it for what it is. It is VERY narrow, and only fits a couple hundred people, most of whom are all sandwiched around the bar (one of those "some need to come out before you can go in" type places). But that's the way other dive bars I've been to are like. This one just happens to be a bit more upscale and has mermaids. The mermaids usually don't come out until about 8 or 9pm. Some weeknights they don't come out at all. But consider that that's someone's job, and there probably aren't very many people able and willing to swim around in a tank wearing a fish tail, getting gawked at all night. Happy hour is pretty good. And they actually have doormen who enforce a dress code for happy hour (I saw a couple in jeans and sweatshirts turned away at 5:30pm). Thankfully you can drive on K Street now, but you still have to park in one of the near by garages or on L Street. read more

I really didn't want to like this place. Right away you can tell the bouncer takes his job way too seriously, and everyone in line spent the last 3 hours tanning and drinking protein shakes. I finally got in after having The Situation bend my I.D. in half 18 times and look at me with furrowed brows. The crowd is definitely mixed... I immediately spotted a group of bros and hoes, some lone hipsters, and even an old man wearing cargo shorts and white socks (rock on, gramps). The bar is nestled in the middle of the room and getting up to it requires some military training. And you better hope you took your loan out before you get up there, because drinks cost almost as much as your rent. All that said, I am a sucker for the tank above the bar and was immediately entranced. There was something so magical about standing around 50 people with B.O. and watching a blonde girl swim around while I sipped on a $650 gin & tonic. Went on Tuesday and Friday of last week to Dive Bar. Tuesday was my first ever visit and I was blown away by the tank and the large fish. I went there to vote and boost votes for my great friend Marisa Conjulusa. Peter was amazing both nights I went. He made the drinks we wanted and even made a few special drinks that were amazing! Tuesday Pedro was with him and was helping him make our drinks. Peter and Pedro were amazing, sweet, funny and made the experience so wonderful Tuesday night. Peter again, served us Friday and not only did he remember our names, he remembered the special drinks he made too! One in a million bartender! I will be back just to hang out with Peter... oh, and see mermaids. Thanks again. I will make this my favorite spot downtown!!! read more

Went here last week and the security outside the club was the most rudest worker ever. He let his friends and people he knew cut the line for about an hr. I didint see this with my own eyes i came up at the end of the altercation but people were accusing him of pocketing money to let people through the line while he made dozens wait. When people started asking him why he let so many people who he knew skip past the waiting customers he claimed it was a guest list but it was 12 so I'm not sure what guest list would allow people to cut at 12am while others had been in line since 11pm . the guys attitude was a huge turn off. If you are going for the novelty of the Mermaids/Mermen, know this: they are only in the tank on Friday and Saturday and special occasions. If you are going to have a nice chat with a friend; don't, you won't be able to hear each other over the music. If you are going to have some good drinks at a cool spot, and maybe get a game of Foosball in. By all means have a great time because this is one of the best bars for it. They have an excellent happy hour where you get some good food for free with the price of a drink (even if you're just having a soda). If you want to have a kickass time, visit on Monday's after 9! It's their Muntiny Monday Industry Night when Byrd, Scuba and the rest of the bartenders takeover and run amok all over the bar. My favorite bar in Sacramento!! AAAANNNNDDD it gets a 3...Let me break it down. Pros: Upscale setting - I like the fact that Dive keeps somewhat of dress code so that people are looking nice and I don't feel like it's a frat-boy house party. Music - I like the fact that the music strays AWAY from the annoying top 40 radio music we are forced to hear too often. Speakers sound great too. Mermaids: Very cool! The novelty HAS worn off on me, but I think it's cool to have in the background and as their main decor theme. Cons: Size - This place is too damn narrow!! When there's 20 people in that place, it feels like 40 people! Size - There's no place to sit when you hit a certain capacity, so you stand awkwardly in the middle of the "tube-shaped" establishment. Size - There's only 1 bar, so sometimes when it's crowded, it takes days to get a drink. As you can see, SIZE MATTERS. It totally kills the mood at times and doesn't make up for it with the pros. Everything else you can think of (i.e. drinks, prices, no cover) are all ordinary and meets the bar standards. I usually have an okay-good time when I visit Dive. I'll keep coming back, but it doesn't offer me what I think a 5-star bar would. It's only what Sacramento can offer me. A few coworkers and I came here for happy hour last week. We originally came at 4ish and the place was largely deserted. After spending almost ten minutes getting his attention, the barkeep told us the famed mermaid appears around 7pm; we decided to come back later since, as mentioned, it's a cramped place and we were meeting with lots of people. We came back from Pyramid around 6 and the place was super packed and extremely loud. Tons and tons of older people (mid 30s on up) in Hawaiian shirts and sandals (there's a dress code here? I honestly did not know). Ordered a Kamikaze and was given a thimble sized Lemon Drop. For 8$, what! A friend was paying for the drink, otherwise I would have laughed in their faces, I'm astonished she didn't. My group started trickling out because of the noise; the crowd was largely older white guys (think frat guys 10 years out of college), making it a little creepy. Fortunately, the last friend to leave was a huge guy, so I was largely left alone. We waited until 7pm for the mermaid, were largely unimpressed, and left. Friends were relieved they did not stay to see the underwhelming 'spectacle'. Make sure to take a shower before and after you leave, it's pretty much like the Zion dance party in the Matrix series. read more

Also this place is clicky and uptight to the max compared to other night clubs in the area. If this place were a gym it would be planet fitness, its like a judgement free zone with everyone judging. I just don't get it. I really don't. I have been to the Dive Bar 4 times now. Initally, the mermaids were what got me there, but now, the novelty has worn off and this place is just another LOUD bar. Seating is limited, it is LONG and DARK and well, the I would rather look at a bunch of really cool fish than at people swimming back and forth, cuz really, how good do they look underwater???? Not so hot - at least in my opinion. On a good note, the dueling piano's on Thursday nights are awesome! This place reminds me of the Bubble Lounge in San Francisco, except it has an amazing fish tank over the bar with a mermaid swimming in it! Mr. Karpaty has done a great job with this place. The securities are soo selective of who goes in and they were kinda rude! I was with a group of friends and half of our group didn't get to go inside because they were "being too loud". Dive bar is more of a quick stop to get a drink and leave because it's pretty small, more like a long skinny hall and it's not much room to dance . I come here every conference trip. The mermaids swim at 9pm. I love this bar. There's a DJ who is usually pretty great from Whitney Houston to E40 to Sweet Home Alabama. Plays a little of everything . Mermaids swim in the pool that runs above the length of the bar. Kim is an awesome bartender. Great photo ops! I went to the Dive Bar for the first time last week and was not impressed with the bar. I liked the design and mermaid tank but it was very crowded with limited seating. The best part about the Dive Bar is the ambience and environment. The worst part is the drinks. I got a drink that tasted like the bartender put his big toe in it with a side of lemon. I will be going back to see if I have a better experience but it's pretty much like all the other bars. Everybody trying to hook up and the ugly people are the last ones at the bar at the end of the night. I came here unexpectedly after Pizza Rock with no knowledge of the swimming mermaids in the aquarium above the bar. With that said, I must say that I don't understand all the negative comments about this idea. Who would NOT want to see chicks swimming in a giant aquarium dressed as mermaids in-between taking swigs out of a flask. How is this at all a bad idea? The aquarium above the bar is gorgeous, the narrow space is reminiscent of some old school alley bar in the ghetto or a music venue in a better city. Maybe it's trendy, I don't know, I couldn't tell, it was early on a Saturday and the mousy voiced bartender served me a glass of wine and later a martini with no olives. Eventually the aquarium got blurry and the mermaid stopped swimming and I think I ran into someone on my way to the bathroom. Or maybe that was a dream. The prices are nothing exceptional, they didn't have cocktail onions, the bartender had one of those high pitch little girl voices that her boyfriend probably thinks is sexy but that would just be pedophile-esque to me. It seems like a good place to start the night before it gets packed and my anxiety kicks in so I take four Vicodin then pass out with my head on a table at that Pyramid place across the street. I have worked downtown for 10 + years and seen the fall and rise of K street mall. The Dive Bar is a great happy hour bar after work. They have great specials from 3-7 pm daily, $5 you-call-it cocktails and $4 beers that come in big glasses. Great deals and strong drinks . While I was there a mermaid was swimming in the tank back and forth over and over, and like the other posts it loses the wow factor after 20 minutes and you go about being at a bar and talking with your friends. The bartenders were very polite and it didn't take long to get our drinks. The crowd was mostly state workers and people who work downtown checking the place out for the first time. There is no seating at the bar, maybe this is for safety reasons because of the fish tank, more people have access to walk up to the bar and grab a drink instead of waiting in 1 long line, and if there was seating at the bar, you would have people breathing down my neck to stare at the mermaids. There is booth/chair seating when you first walk in to the left and right, if these are open I suggest you grab it fast or else you will be standing. Not sure if I like this or not but I don't see how else they could get more seating in the place, you could always go to Pizza Rock or Dist. 30. I didn't have a hard time getting in, the bouncers were nice and if they are doing their job and keeping the "ghetto" out then they are doing a great job. It would only take one "problem" to shut this place down and ruin it for everyone else and then K Street would go back to being a dump, ghost town. Can't wait to go back! read more

I've been here a few times when I'm out in Sacramento. I've never really had a problem with the staff and the beers aren't enormously overpriced. I've seen the mermaid, and for thirty seconds, I was intrigued. Apparently there's a merman..I haven't seen him yet. The bathrooms are mostly clean, and I've had decent luck meeting friendly people each time I've been here. The ambiance is clean, and there's plenty of people hanging around the bar. It's a good place for happy hour or for bar hopping. It didn't feel seedy at all to me. I know Sacramento is trying to increase the nightlife here. I'd give this place 3.5 stars...but I'm rounding up to four because I have love for Sacramento. read more

NO MERMAIDS. This is getting ridiculous. I have been three times and have seen no mermaids. The first time was during the first week on a Wednesday during lunch. I did not expect mermaids at lunch, so I was more just checking out the tank. The second time was a Saturday night (Feb 12). I convinced a date to join me despite the club not really being my thing music and crowd-wise. We waited about 45 minutes in line and were told at the front that the mermaids were indeed there. It was extremely crowed and everyone we talked to said they had been there awhile and not seen a single mermaid. We stood at the bar and drank, waiting, for THREE HOURS! Nothing. The bartenders all said they had no idea when (or if) mermaids would make an appearance. We left defeated. The third time was tonight (Feb 20). My friend and I were walking by and I was telling her my experience with seeing no mermaids. I told her to peek in and at least see the tank. I was going to wait outside. When the doorman heard my story he said, "Oh, there are mermaids tonight. In fact, she's in there right now." So we both went it, and sure enough, NO MERMAID. We asked the people standing around waiting if they'd seen any and we got the same "No, I've been here an hour" answers from everyone. We waited one hour and left defeated, once again. NO MERMAIDS. If you like the music or the crowd at this place, it seems like it would be an OK bar. If you just want to see mermaids, don't bother. read more

Mermaid sightings don't happen all the time, but when it does be happy! Even with no mermaid, it's a beautiful fish tank! Decent happy hour, food and drink specials. I'm almost certain food comes from it's next door neighbor Pizza Rock, since it's connected to it! I think you can order off menu too, but I could be wrong on that. It's a pretty narrow space. Honey if you hate your job that much, here's a tip for you "quit!" no one is going to tip a sour-puss bartender. Everyone that goes to this bar is old (35+) and creepy. The mermaid is lame, only went here thinking I was going to see something exciting. My friends and I were thoroughly disappointed. If you're in you're 20's go somewhere else! Overall if you're in Downtown Sacramento and looking for a good time, and good service go to Bar West. It may be a little "Jersey Shore" but the service is spectacular!
