Ask a staff member to purchase cakes. My order: Ube Mochi Danish ($4.65): +This reminded me more of a pineapple bun vs a danish, with its crunchy top & soft bread. +Ube was smooth and mochi was chewy -As someone who orders drinks w/reduced sweetness, I thought the bread was bland and could be a touch sweeter. -Unfortunately, they don't provide you with an actual bag or sleeve to hold your bread. My item was placed in a paper cone. Durian Pull Apart Bread ($6.20): +Even though there was a cloud of powdered sugar, it was surprisingly not too sweet! +The packaging was so cute with the cartoon & Chinese message. -I was expecting something lighter & fluffy, but it was on the denser side. It reminded me more of crumb cake than bread. -Lacked durian filling *My fave for durian buns is in SF Chinatown Side notes: 1.) Self-serve napkins and water 2.) Paper bags are 25 cents 3.) Indoor seating 4.) Walking distance from San Mateo Caltrain station *Verdict: I thought the items I tried looked better than they tasted, but if I was in the area, I wouldn't mind stopping by to try something else.

I recently tried a chocolate cupcake from The Cake Shop in San Mateo at a friend's birthday, and…read moreunfortunately I was really disappointed. The cupcake itself was quite dry, and the buttercream had an overwhelming buttery taste rather than the smooth, creamy, silky texture I expected from a professional bakery. There was also very little frosting on top, which made the presentation look unfinished. I'm honestly relieved this wasn't for my son's birthday, because I would have been extremely disappointed. I really wanted to love it, but it just didn't meet the quality I hoped for.

This tall cake served twenty easily (I sliced it in two layers), and was an enormous hit with the newly four year old. The adults loved the chocolate cookie "hole" construction site, everyone wanted to know where it was from. The flavor and texture of the chocolate cake was excellent, much much better than a store cake. I had low expectations for the frosting flavor given the decorations and past experience with kid birthday cakes but this was outstanding. Overall a huge hit and well worth the price for what was also the perfect centerpiece for the table. I will happily reorder from this bakery whenever we need an event cake, it was just so easy and so rewarding.

Had a nice chat with Sales Associate Rosa at the Cakery who enlightened me to this interesting tidbit. ... If you've been Following my reviews you will know... I am absolutely in love with Schubert's princess cake. This may explain why the princess cake at the Cakery has often been hailed as very similar to the one from Schubert's. Even though the Cakery has changed hands. They still offer memorably delicious cakes. I couldn't resist a slice of strawberry cream cake for lunch which was moist and light and ohh sooo good. Picked up a princess cake to enjoy with family and friends tonight. The verdict, while similar, I still prefer the Schubert's princess cake for its lightness and less sweet finish. Schubert's princess cake also has a more predominant almond flavor. Both memorably delicious. In fact, the consensus over the dinner table amongst friends and family was deeeelicious! And my cousin, who's the most important critique says I can bring the princess cake from either place over anytime! Would definitely return for either cake or to try the double chocolate cake which is Rosa's recommendation or coffee crunch cake that Mike C. recommended for next time. Suspect there will be many more times visiting the Cakery on Burlingame Avenue!

Their croissant is buttery and soft, and with a generous amount of salmon neatly packed in together. I kind of wish there was a sauce on the side to go with it. Bestie had the turkey wrap. He liked it but my salmon croissant was superior. Also the CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT CAKE (not the official name aha) this was so good! Dense and nutty with rich hazelnut and chocolate flavor. Best eaten the day of, as it dried out in my fridge aha. The interior feels quite empty, with some tables by the window, it might be cuter and more functional!

I also wanted something the kids/guests enjoyed and something different so I decided to see if I could add vanilla ice cream to the cake, and they said, "Of course! We haven't done this before but I think that would taste good." And lo and behold, it was amazing- it was a hit with the birthday boy and the guests as well. Their carrot cake is amazing (moist and not too sweet) and they helped with my crazy questions and ideas along the way. I will def go back to have them create my cakes for other occasions! I've previously come here for their ice cream and smaller desserts, which were all great. The service is friendly and quick. Very clean and some seating inside, tho we always just pick up and take items to go.

I'm also not a huge frosting person, and I believe the cream was buttercream, which was probably the biggest downside for me. It wasn't overly sweet, but the consistency was just too thick for both my husband and me. I even tried leaving it out for over an hour to see if it would soften, but it remained dense. I do wish there were more fruit in the filling. It was mainly cream and a few berries. We sliced the cake on Saturday, and by Monday the exposed part of the cake from where it was cut had become pretty dry. I ended up cutting off the dry outer layer, but thankfully the inside was still moist, so I was able to enjoy the rest of the cake. Ordering through Square was easy. I ordered the 4-inch cake with a marble design, matcha cake, strawberry cream, and strawberries. One thing to note is that if you order the 4-inch cake, there wasn't a section to add custom text. You'll need to email or call them with your order number to let them know what you want written on the cake. Overall, the highlight of the cake was definitely the cake itself. The moisture and strong matcha flavor really stood out and were my favorite parts. If I were to order from this bakery again, I'd probably try a different filling and cream because the buttercream just wasn't for me, but that's more of a personal preference.
