Lulu (not so) yum was a bit disappointing tbh. I've been craving a mille crepe cake, but was too lazy to drive all the way to Lady M and Sweet Glory by work has been closed for the time being. I had a couple for Luluyum and decided to go buy a few slices. There's a self-service kiosk or someone can assist. Since I had a coupon, I rang the bell to ask for assistance. The cashier was kind enough to honor the coupon for all the slices regardless of the fine print. I was not expecting that, so appreciated the gesture. Therefore, instead of paying $14/slice, I only paid about $11. Unfortunately, while the flavors were good, the texture was not there. The layers weren't as delicate as other places. I just went to HARBS and was expecting a similar consistency. Also, I know a lot of reviewers say not to compare it to Lady M, but Luluyum charges a couple bucks more than Lady M and just doesn't compare. If you're going to charge that high of a price point, the quality better match up. Great service and cute, minimal interior! Salted egg yolk and pork sung was really unique. I would want a little more pork sung sprinkled on top! I was excited to try this place out since I love mille crepes. Ad we enter, the interior is spacious and clean. They have a self order kiosk which is really handy. One thing to note that I didn't see others mentioning is that there is an additional fee/service charge when using the self order kiosk. I had ordered the black sesame cake and the durian cake. The cakes do come frozen and it took more than a hour to thaw out. The black sesame was really good and the flavors were strong and nutty. The only con was that it was still frozen in the middle after waiting an hour and the cake layers were really thick and hard compared to other mille crepe cakes that I had before. I was really excited to try the durian and forgot to snap a picture, but I had high hopes after trying the sesame. I love durian but their durian cake lacked flavor. There was minimal durian smell and taste so if you are a durian fan I would pass on this. For the price point of $15-18, I would expect higher quality cakes but it just doesn't meet that. However be warned that Luluyum is certainly not comparable to Lady M - for starters ONE slice of cake cost us $14 which was significantly higher than Lady M. The cake slice was also smaller and not as well put together. We got the tea cake with boba - for some reason we were told that it was being offered to go only so they packed it in a box. Then we asked them for utensils so we could try it out but they said "no" and told us to wait one hour before eating because the cake slice was frozen (?!?) Anyway we got home and finally dug into it - it was nothing to write home about - the boba inside the cake wasn't regular boba but more of the popping kind of boba that isn't as chewy which again was disappointing. I think the smallest cake is a bit overpriced (I understand inflation) but it was a good alternative to Lady M.The smallest cake can feed 6 to 8 people max but you will have to cut it evenly if you want to feed 8. But, I was expecting a bit more decorative embellishments on the side of the cake instead of just clear plastic wrap. Just plain cardboard cake stand which is all ok if the cake is awesome. I try the Matcha side first as I LOVE matcha. First bite is underwhelming. There are definitely a lot of layers of crepe. But they are NOT soft or fluffy. It's just flat dry crepe with cream in between the layers. I will say it is very time consuming to make it, but the taste is not there. The sea salt Oreo is a tad better than Matcha. For the holidays, Luluyum was offering a 4-in-1 Holiday Special Mille Crêpe Cake Slices: Salted Egg & Pork Floss, Matcha, Tiramisu, Dark Chocolate for $56 ($14/slice). I purchased the slices for delivery via Nextdish, a bay area app that delivers AZN goodies to your home. If you want Haidilao (Cupertino) delivered to SF, you can have it! I ordered the night before and was given a 2 hour window for delivery. I received regular text updates and my order arrived within the first hour by a very kind man hustling on Christmas Day. Each Mille Crêpe Cake Slice was individually boxed and packed in a stapled bag. During the ordering process, it wasn't specified that the slices will arrive partially frozen. Nor, was there a note included to indicate that they needed to be thawed before consuming. While unboxing the slices, the edges seemed soft, however, it was sorely disappointing to dig into these expensive slices to find they were still frozen in the center. With that said, the flavors were tasty and subtly sweet just the way I like my desserts. This popped up as Hot New Business and I was very interested based on some of the reviews. I am supportive of local businesses during the pandemic shutdown. However, this is very misleading; I arrived at the former Fresh Nation storefront only to discover that they are not technically open for business and you have to order ahead by calling or ordering online. The owner of the store informed me of this after I knocked on the door. She couldn't give me a definitive answer when the store would be opening due to COVID-19 shutdown. My trip was not a complete waste and the owner offered me what flavors she had available, Oreo and Tiramisu. The cost was $25 for 2 slices of the mille crepe cake; $12.50 a slice I thought was pricey for their cake for a standard slice and even more if you had it delivered. The slices came individually boxed in triangular shaped boxes. Sadly, I was not impressed with their cake--while the appearance and layering is beautiful; the Oreo cake came with a mini Oreo and the tiramisu was generously dusted with cocoa powder, each crepe layer was perfectly thin and a nice sponginess, but the flavors of my particular choices, the Oreo was lacking, the tiramisu had a buttercream-like aftertaste with each bite despite the beautiful appearance. It was definitely not a memorable dessert experience. Maybe I had too high of an expectation of these cakes. I cannot give this place anything more than 3 stars for now. Not a lot of people are fond of the taste or smell of durian.. so if you are a durian fan, you have to give this place a try. We got the Tasting Set which came at a price of $108 which is certainly very steep for a dessert. The staff also allows you to substitute any flavor in the Tasting Set which is why there are two matcha cakes in my picture. The entrance of Luluyum to put it bluntly is super uninviting and pretty easy to miss too when you're in town. You can't enter the inside and the entrance is blocked by a cart. You have to ring a bell to get a worker to come take your order. Customer service was decent overall. I'm only giving it three stars because taste wise some cakes didn't taste much different from the other. The milk tea crepe cake didn't have much of a milk tea taste for example and just tasted pretty vanilla. Some flavors are just lacking overall and for the price you would expect more depth in flavor for the cakes. The awkwardness of having to order basically outside and not being able to go inside is a negative for me, but some others might not mind. Personally I would never go here to get a cake unless it was a special occasion like a birthday. The high price is certainly a big downside. read more
