Burger came out burnt, fish was dry, came out with the wrong food and service wasn't good. Do not recommend.

Grilled romaine salad

Castaway is well known in certain circles for their clam jam ($1.25 Clams and $1.50 Oysters at happy hour, 4-7 pm), for being a rarity in Ocean Beach in that they are open from March to November, and for being one of the few restaurants in town that doesn't really have great outdoor seating (maybe why they open out of season). Personally, I know them as a place with solid food all around, and exceptionally sweet servers. Whether you're looking for a salad, some seafood (raw or otherwise), something a little meatier (burger, meatloaf, etc.), or just some wings (Mondays they are $.60 apiece) and drinks, Castaway's got it, and they do it pretty well. A couple things to note: 1. The grilled romaine salad is not the Caesar you think it is. It's deconstructed into deliciously seasoned grilled hearts of romaine, with dressing, pickled onions, and croutons on the side (check the photo). I was into it because it tastes good, but it took some work to eat it, so I'm going to use it as an excuse to never order salad again. Unless I'm here, because I did like it. 2. If they've got mahi on the menu, get it. You can get it over a salad, in some tacos...all good. 3. The Castaway fries are supposedly a mix of shoestring, curly, and sweet potato fries. Those are not shoestring fries, and there weren't nearly enough of the other kinds (maybe three sweet potato fries total). And everyone knows curly fries are superior...I would've been happy with a small, seasoned curlies.

Fried Calamari

Very much enjoyed my lunch the other day at Castaways. Decided to ride and walk in from Robert Moses and after a hot day treat myself to a lunch before heading back. I was immediately seated and provided a bottle of cold water and a menu which was nice. To start off with, I ordered the Fried Calamari. It was nice that on a Thursday afternoon the calamari had a snap to it, was not overly rubbery or overly fried. It a lighter crispy batter so you could taste the calamari itself and not something that was simply "fried". For lunch I had the Blackened Mahi Mahi sandwich with tri color slaw, spicy remoulade and garlic parmesan and truffle fries. It definitely hit the spot and the fish was well grilled without being burned or charred. The seasoning was the right amount to give it that blackened taste while still allowing the fish to shine through. As you can see from the pictures, the fish was of a sizable portion. The service was excellent as I was checked in on but did not have anyone checking over my shoulder every few minutes. I wanted a nice quiet place to sit back and enjoy lunch while catching up on emails and I had exactly that. I would definitely return.

We stumbled into this restaurant bar for lunch and drinks. The restaurant is located close to the Ferry on Fire Island. It's a very casual restaurant bar with predictable food & seafood, plus they have a full bar with Flat Screens. We ordered drinks and lots of food and I must say we had quite a large bill. But I blame that mostly on my family who just could not avoid ordering more than one martini. The burgers were meaty and good along with the salads. Our waitress was very accommodating and she made sure the drinks kept flowing.

We chose The Castaways because we could bring our dog inside. (Not a good reason.). My Rocket Fuel (THE drink of Fire Island) wasn't great (and it was $14.00!) and I was a bit concerned, but unnecessarily so. The Castaways Dip that we split was amazing. The beef was tender, medium-rare (as we ordered it), and the rosemary panini bread was very flavorful. The fries were crisp and flavorful (my ketchup went untouched). Next time I'll order a gin and tonic.

Music is way to loud, fried chicken sandwich was undercooked and fries were soggy, service was okay.

Complete disaster from start to finish. From the moment I…read morecalled to place a takeout order, it was an exercise in frustration. What should have been a 5-minute process took two phone calls and far too much patience. If you're going to have staff answering the phone, put them somewhere they can actually hear the customer. I spoke with two girls (sounded like teenagers) who had me repeat myself at least 7 times for every item I ordered. One even told the other, "I can't hear anything -- you do it." When I suggested they move somewhere quieter, the response was, "This is the quietest spot." Fine. I ordered 3 cold lobster rolls and 2 hot lobster rolls. She informed me they don't sell cold lobster rolls -- despite the fact they're clearly listed on their website. Fine again. When I finally finished the order and asked how long it would take, she just hung up on me. I called back, she recognized my wife's name, and casually told me it would be 15 minutes for 5 lobster rolls, a burger, and calamari. Odd, but fine. When we arrived, they informed us there was no calamari. We showed them the website with both hot and cold lobster rolls. The response? "Oh, I have no clue." The manager came over, and when we asked if the menu was changing, he said, "I hope so!" Not exactly reassuring. We got home (two toddlers and a baby in tow, so eating there wasn't an option) and opened the food -- and that's when it went from bad to insulting. Every roll was upside down with what little lobster there was spilling out. The bread wasn't even split open properly. We ended up scooping scraps of lobster with our fingers into the bread. For almost $200, this was an absolute embarrassment. I rarely write reviews, but this was so bad I hope a manager contacts us to make it right. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and order from literally anywhere else.

We were looking for a chill spot with live music during our day trip to Fire Island, and Sandbar…read moredelivered exactly what we wanted! Laid-back, lively, and totally unique. The minute we walked in, we felt transported to a Key West-inspired oasis. The vibe at Sandbar is everything you want in a beach bar ... veteran watering hole energy, live music playing, and a crowd that's having the best time. If you're into quirky décor, you'll love the hundreds of colorful flip flops hanging from the ceiling, each one signed by past patrons. It's fun to look up and read what previous visitors have written. There are even surfboards and nautical treasures everywhere, making the spot truly one-of-a-kind. We came especially for the famous Rocket Fuel ... if you've never had one, you're missing out! Rocket Fuel is a frozen, creamy concoction featuring pina colada mix, amaretto, and rum (usually topped with a float of 151). It's the quintessential Ocean Beach drink: frosty, sweet, a little indulgent, and just strong enough to get you in island mode without derailing your afternoon! We grabbed our Rocket Fuels, settled in, and enjoyed the vibes. The live music was awesome and kept the energy up with beachy classics and crowd favorites. Even in the afternoon, Sandbar was buzzing but never felt overcrowded or hectic. From friendly bartenders and great drinks, I look forward to returning here for a fun evening with my friends.
