I have always been a leech on Yelp, creeping other people's reviews and never contributing my own. That is, until I got the best haircut of my life from Coco at Dlala and decided that she deserves to have my first ever review. I was bored, bored, BORED of my hair, but I didn't actually know what I wanted to do with it. So I decided to treat myself and splurge on a $65 cut at Dlala. My former stylist always insisted on doing whatever she wanted to my hair and never actually let me tell her what I wanted, so when I went to Coco and she actually took the time to ask me what I wanted, I was WILDLY unhelpful. She was REALLY patient with me and we went through a couple of look books so she could help me piece together an idea of what I wanted. In the end I just insisted that I'm too damn indecisive and let her call the shots, which resulted in MAJOR HAIR AWESOMENESS. She gave me a fringe and perfect layers that did wonders for my face shape and we had a fun conversation about the horrible customers I get at my retail job. Seriously, I walked out of Dlala like a new person. And after putting up a pic on FaceBook, I got tons more "likes" than any of my other pics. So you know it's legit. read more

I love it...but have mixed feelings..... Having moved from Tokyo to New York, it was the first time I look for a hair salon in Manhattan. I have quite fizzy hair and was looking to do a straight perm. I found Dlala on Yelp and the review was really good, so I decided to give a go. The salon is small but cozy, they were pretty busy for a week day afternoon. My hair stylist was very good, she was attentive and carefully looked at my hair to give me suggestion. Everything was great and she gave me good suggestion on how I should blow dry my hair. But the shock came with the bill, it was about USD 430 before tips. So I basically paid more than 500 dollars for a straight perm and a brief haircut.....it's pretty much double of what I was paying in the central Tokyo. After seeing all these high ratings on yelp, I had to try this place out for myself. Seeing is believing! I called and got an appointment the same day with Yukari. She took her time and listened to me. I have thick frizzy curly hair and explained that I'd like to keep it long with the layers and that I normally straighten it to make it smooth. She knew exactly what to do and even gave me tips, free samples, and a neck massage! I have very long, thick, wavy hair and it can be hard to find a stylist who knows how to make it look amazing without much effort (my preferred approach to my hair). After seeing the photos posted on Yelp I decided to try Dlala, even though I do not live anywhere near the salon. I made an appointment with Junya and was thrilled with the experience. I even came back a few weeks later for another blow dry for a special event. He's really a master with long hair. I appreciate the extra time he takes to make it look beautiful (both the hair cut and the blow dry). He strikes me as a perfectionist, in the best possible way. If you're considering making an appointment, go for it. I really think you'll be glad you did. Today was my fifth time here and I LEFT WITH A SMILE as always. JUNYA is my stylist and he's so SWEET, OPINIONATED, ACCOMMODATING, and TALENTED! He really LISTENS to your needs and wants, works his magic, and poof you come out LOOKING MORE AMAZING! I usually show him some pictures of what I'd like my hair to be like and then ask him for his opinion. He's always VERY THOROUGH and weighs in many factors i.e. volume, face shape, length, etc. He really CARES and does his best to PLEASE YOU. He's also very PERSONABLE, FUN TO TALK TO (we always chat about travels and bars/restaurants to try), and WELL MANNERED. I feel so AT EASE and have COMPLETE TRUST in Junya when I'm in his chair. This is a minimalist salon w a lot of talented people. It's always PACKED, so you have to make an appt. I usually call 1-2 weeks ahead of time. The staff here will take care of you the moment you step through the door. They're friendly, polite, and genuine. I've had problems with getting my hair cut ever since I was a child. It always ends up being cut shorter than I want and so for the past few years I've gotten in the habit of trimming my hair at home. Now that I live in NYC, I decided to go to a hair salon. I looked up tons of places on Yelp before finally deciding on Dlala. I called up on Monday and got an appointment for Friday, I requested Mariko. It's a very small place across from Tompkins Park. I had to wait a little for Mariko to finish her previous client. She came over and we discussed what kind of haircut I wanted. I showed her some pictures and she told me what would suit my face, as I wanted layers. The end result was amazing. It was exactly what I wanted even though I wasn't able to express it. She didn't cut my hair much shorter, but the layers are wonderful. I feel like a completely different person and I couldn't stop gushing about my haircut to everyone I saw that day. Mariko is the only person I will let cut my hair from now on. She was friendly, helpful, and really tried to understand what it is that I wanted. The price may be a little expensive, 67.50 for a college student, but as the best haircut I've ever gotten, it was perfect. read more

I went to Dlala a couple of weeks ago to get an "I have a job interview and need to look like a professional, but stylish at the same time" haircut. It was admittedly not only my first time there, but to an NY hair salon period. I've always been more of a barber shop guy, but considering the importance of the haircut and some advice I got from a hair stylist friend I decided to make the leap. My hair is difficult to cut. It had been about 3 or 4 months since my last cut. I'm the type of guy that usually gets his hair cut short and then lets it grow until it gets unruly needs to be put down. It's thick and tends to grow up and out when it gets long. It also tends to poof in the back; like how I imagine Alfalfas would if he didn't mercilessly sculpt it into that little point. Junior was my hair stylist, and simply put, he's the man. He was very helpful and knew exactly what I wanted even while I gave him minimal direction, which is great for me because I don't normally know what to say other than "short but not too short". Junior's a super friendly professional who gave me a great cut and also showed me some styling tips to keep it looking fresh. I was happy to pay the 30 or so extra bucks than I would have at a barber shop. I will definitely be back to see him. The service here is off the hook. Sasa @ Dlala really took care of me and gave me an awesome haircut this afternoon. I tend to go months without getting my mop cut (mostly for fear of bad chop) so to get a good one counts high up there in my book. I got started off with a great shampoo/head rub combo & then Sasa spent a good 20-30 min styling my hair. When she was finished I couldn't even tell I had been through a haircut. SO FRIENDLY. & CHATTY! Which I really enjoyed, it was a nice way to just pass the time & learn a little bit about some new people. About $50 for the cut. Completely worth it. I love this salon. Every one of the staff is extremely accommodating and nice. I first came here due to the yelp reviews and saw Michiko?(don't have her name, sorry), who gave me a great haircut and did exactly what I wanted. The haircut was around $70 and was amazing. Last week, I had a horrible cut from a salon near this one that claims to specialize in cutting short hair. It turned out so horrible and I wanted to get it fixed before I went back to work on Monday. I called Dlala on Sunday afternoon and asked if they can fit me in with whomever would see me. Thankfully, I got booked with Junya. He magically transformed my hideous haircut into a chic bob. I've been getting so many compliments on it with all my co-workers and even my doorman saying it looks fabulous. I really appreciated how Junya went slowly, taking away an inch at a time and asked if I'm comfortable with the length. He also gave great feedback from his professional opinion about how an angled bob would look on me. I'm just so thankful to Junya and the staff at Dlala that I'm convinced this is the best salon in the city. I wanted to find a cheaper haircut which is why I tried that other place (that haircut was $35). But you get what you pay for. Yukari is the Beeeeeest! I've been to many good salons-Kiwa/hair mates/hayato etc...and switched from those to Dlala because of Yukari! I have long hair and I always put off getting it cut for as long as possible for fear that they'll cut too much off. But for some reason I woke up today feeling particularly spontaneous, and so I decided to peruse Yelp's reviews and pick a place either in union square/flatiron/or east village and hope that I wouldn't end up regretting my decision. Well, after all was said and done, I am so happy with my choice-- this salon is fantastic! It's a lot smaller than the places I have gone in the past, but I was able to get an appointment for a cut and blow-dry within 30 minutes from when I made the inquiry call. Everyone who works at Dlala is so sweet and friendly, it makes the experience a lot more pleasant and relaxing. I had Jun, who gave me a fantastic cut and blow dry. He listened to what I had asked for (not to cut too much off) but he also offered a few suggestions that I agreed to and it ended up making my hair look a lot better than it has been for years. I also just really appreciated how friendly he was, and how meticulous he was with his work, from beginning to end. I left feeling refreshed and much more confident-- not to mention it only cost me 65 dollars which is a steal compared to the majority of the other places I've been in Manhattan. Yay Jun!! I came here because of these good reviews and since I couldn't wait 2wks for a haircut at my usual nyc joint. My hair didn't look so bad after being styled with wax. Once I got home and took a shower I noticed I was given a "mushroom" cut with the sides protruding out. People today have been commenting on my weird cut and I'm so disappointed. I got an excellent hair cut today by Coco. She was extremely nice, attentive, smart and you can tell that she is a perfectionist and pays attention to every detail of your hair. My hair type is extremely difficult to cut. It is very thick, course, uneven in density, and curly in some places while being straight in other places. I explained this to her and she was kind of surprised to see that it was true as she was going through my hair with her hands. I explained to her that although my hair looked straight and silky, it will frizz up to 10x the size after you wet it and can only be dried with a diffuser and product. She paid attention and customized the layers of my hair to accomodate my hair type. She has amazing hair herself and great style, so I knew that I could trust her taste from the get go. I will be going back to get my hair dyed in a few weeks. It was only $60 and tipped 20 bucks cash. This is down from the $80 + 20 tip that I used to pay at Whistle. I love the stylists at Whistle, but getting an appointment was too difficult and if you miss an appointment you get charged 1 1/2 during your next visit. It was hard to keep appointments when you had to make one 3-4 months in advanced and weren't sure if you would be able to make it. At Dlala, I got an appointment same day on a Friday. read more

Yutaka (the owner) is amazing. He's actually been my longest relationship in New York (he's been cutting my hair for almost 7 years at this point) and I cannot say enough wonderful things about him. Yutaka offers practical styling advice to replicate a look at home, and will also be honest enough to veer you away from something that might be too trendy, too young, or too conservative. His feedback is both tactful and constructive. All the stylists at the salon are incredibly kind, patient and detail oriented. Never really understood what it meant to "feel like a million bucks" until I walked out of Dlala. Big thanks to Yukari for giving me one of the best haircuts ever and making it such a pleasant experience! She really understood what length would go with my face shape so she convinced me to keep it longer, whereas other hair stylists are usually quick to hack it off. Yukari gave me great suggestions on how to style my hair and work with its natural texture. This place is crazy. It's pretty tiny, but in my initial walk by it was clear to see that this place has more personality and spunk than a salon 2/3/4x its size! I booked an appointment for the next day, knowing I was going to chop off 15 inches. Mariko was my stylist, and she definitely was the best person to help me make this huge transition (you can read about my horribular experience at John Masters salon...) from long haired to short bobbed (with a rattail!!!). Once she braided my locks, she gave me (and the salon) a giant THREE-TWO-ONE countdown until the big snip! It was great to have such a fun cut by someone who's got a lot of heart and good at storytelling- she's truly passionate about what she does. I haven't had my hair professionally done in over 10 years and after some research, I decided to go to Dlala for my long needed haircut. The staff were so nice and my stylist, Misora, was not only very patient when discussing what I want, she even described to me in detail what she will do to help me achieve my hair goaI! I got the Milbon smooth treatment with my haircut and my hair was left silky smooth. My hair looked limp and lifeless when I came in but I left feeling like a princess. I'd been meaning to try this salon for years and finally went for it on an afternoon off from work. I chose Yukari as my stylist after reading great reviews about her and couldn't be any happier about that decision! She was so sweet and patient, really took the time to understand my current hair routine and what I wanted out of the cut. She did an excellent job with my (long, slightly dry/wavy/frizzy) hair and I left the salon floating on a cloud (the post-cut mini massage was just the icing on the cake :)). A salon where the stylists actually listen to you, who thought of that simple concept? I never knew the word 'trim' was so contextual, but not in Dlala. Mariko is awesome. She will take the time to listen to your wishes and provide feedback. She doesn't cut corners and conversing with her is actually interesting. The price is also hard to beat. For a guy, $45 for a great cut in New York is a solid deal! It is an intimate salon and you will not get a conveyer belt fast-food treatment. Nor is it overly stuffy. I took myself and my girlfriend here to get simultaneous hair cuts. I need to start off by saying this place is an incredibly affordable high end cut. My cut only set me back 45 dollars and my girlfriends was only 65. Maybe it's racist of me but I assumed since the stylists and receptionists were asian that it would be specifically focused toward that hair type. This is totally not the case and they did a completely kick ass job on my hair as well as my girlfriends. Coco cut my hair. She listened very closely to the guidelines that I put down for what I wanted to do but wasn't afraid to risk criticism by putting out suggestions that she felt would work better for my hair than what I recommended. She used techniques that I have not seen done by other stylists that really gave my hair a unique look. Additionally, I am in the early stages of hair recession and when I walked out you couldn't even tell anymore. Dlala has great hours including sundays and it is really easy to make even a last minute appointment. I would recommend them to anyone. Five stars for Dlala. read more

On a quest for a new hairstylist in NYC ---- Made an appointment with Coco on Saturday, she was very friendly and knowledgeable. She understood exactly what I wanted, low maintenance, no frills, and keeping the length. I asked her for opinions on highlights and perm. She never pushed any processes on me and advised that they don't do digital perm there. But if I were to go for one I should be careful and make sure they won't dry out my hair. She took her time for my haircut, we got to know each other and she showed me the results in the mirror when she was done - I liked it very much. Then she proceeded to use the curling iron and styled my hair. I loved roaming around east village for the rest of the afternoon / evening with my new wavy hairdo. She could have just dried my hair naturally straight and sent me on my way, but I l appreciated her putting in the extra effort and making it pretty. She also gave me some tips on styling my bangs. All in all a nice experience, the price was standard, I will be back. I didn't know if I would like the haircut until I've washed and styled it myself... so it's been almost a week and I've gotten many compliments. The search is over. read more

I took an out-of-town friend to Sasa two weeks ago; she had complained to me that no matter where she goes, all her life she has ended up getting the same hair cut, no matter what picture she brings or what she says she wants, etc. Well, I dropped her off and went to grab some coffee and people/dog-watch in the park, and picked her back up about an hour later when her haircut was finished. I was on my way to book a hair appointment with another hairdresser in the area, that was about $30 more expensive, when I walked past Dlala. It looked like a relaxed atmosphere and was busy so I enquired about the price - SHOCK $60 for Shampoo, Cut and Blow-dry! Could not believe my luck! I decided to give it a go. So... Well. I really wanted to like this place since it was my first experience with a japanese salon. Since it seemed like everyone was getting good reviews I decided to just go make an appointment without mentioning anyone specific. The guy I got just arrived from japan 3 weeks ago. The good: The haircut. It was pretty accurate to what I had in mind but I always hoped for a place to go beyond my expectation, which didn't happen. The bad: The guy wasn't very good at washing my hair after the cut. I have thick hair, but I expected him to know that it wasn't washed very well. I actually instructed him to wash more but he just kind of poured water over it quickly. I had a really bad experience washing it out tonight. I actually can't remember the last time I had so much hair fall our during a shower. The haircut was 52 dollars and I tiped 8. It probably a pretty low tip for a place like this but I couldn't bare to tip anymore because of my lack of contentment. I expected better for the price. I'm going back to hair lounge in chinatown to get better service/quality and a cheaper price. read more

This review has been long overdue, as I've come to adopt Dlala as my new go-to salon. But let's start from the beginning. (In a galaxy far, far away...) When I couldn't get an appointment at my beloved Hair Kuwayama, I was in mild distress. Who, then, could cut my hair with such precision and style? Luckily, as always, Yelp was there to recommend Dlala to me, and to my surprise, it was even closer to my apartment than Kuwayama. Perfecto! My stylist was Junya, who is super friendly and constantly lets you know what he's doing so you don't have to worry about getting a Locks-of-Love cut when all you really wanted was a trim. Plus he styled my hair so nicely for the day, with large, loose curls, that I felt like a Pantene model walking down the street back to my apartment! Better yet, it's cheaper than Kuwayama. Not by much ($5) but that's totally enough to get something from the halal cart, sweet! read more

Just like Japan, but better! I decided to come for a haircut at Dlala last July (yes, I'm late on my yelps) based on the Yelp reviews and I'm so glad I did. I got it cut by the owner, who is from Tokyo and just all kinds of amazing. It is pricey, but honestly if you want a good haircut in Manhattan, you gotta pay the moolah for it. The reason it took me awhile to write this review is b/c I think a good haircut is dependent not only on the initial cut, but how it grows out. A true stylist knows where the layer falls and when your hair grows out, it really shows. Yay I grabbed the appt and went in with high hopes that my drab long blah hair will get a style. I was happy with my former stylist and never had hair issues. I did want a fresh perspective. Wow did I get it from Coco. I told her to chop off as much as she wanted. She showed me some pics... I just said do whatever you think is best! She chopped off 6+ inches and gave me side bangs! My hair moves now... doesn't just hang. I always want to get my hair cut on short notice, and I can usually get an appt in a reasonable amount of time, and for a reasonable price (I think it's $60 for ladies). I have a very sharp, precision-cut bob haircut, and I really struggled to find someone with the skill to cut my hair to my specifications after moving back to the US from Asia. A friend recommended Yukata, and he is my go-to guy now. I've recommended the salon and Yutaka to friends and coworkers. Yutaka is extremely professional and friendly. My fiance was satisfied with his haircut here and said it was more affordable than other places, so I gave it a try for a cut and partial highlights. I have pixie/boy-cut hair that grows in very thick. Akiko, my stylist, was friendly and we talked a little bit but there wasn't pressure to keep talking. Instead of highlighting my hair first (which is how I've always, ALWAYS had it done before), she wanted to wash and cut it first because I had put product in it. Well, yeah, I wasn't going to walk around with limp hair till 4:30 pm, and I've never had an issue with this at other salons. She was good with the cut and did listen to me in that I wanted it short and thinned out a lot and that's what I got. The highlights are a different story. I wanted a golden copper, but they're this brassy color that reminds me of sun-in and -- probably because the hair was cut first -- the pattern really shows up, no matter how I try to style my hair to hide it. I look like a reverse leopard. When my fiance came home, he was like, "What's with the pattern on the hair?" It was $150, which is cheap for NYC, but for me this was a lesson in "you get what you pay for." So. I'm fine going elsewhere and paying a little more. Sorry, Dlala! read more

Although I came late, she still took me in and did not rush me one bit. She did everything that I requested and I am very happy with the outcome. I love this little place! I don't have much hair and any other place can wash, cut and blow my hair within the hour, but Sasa managed to stretch it out to 2.5 hours. OK, I am not equating time with quality, but I loved that she took the time to REALLY find out what I wanted, especially because I didn't know what I wanted. It took so long because she kept trying different things until something clicked. The staff were so incredibly accomodating and friendly. I would recommend this to anyone! Another fantastic experience with Yunya! I hadn't cut my long, fine (but voluminous!) hair in a while, and those ends just needed to go. I called Dlala the day before I wanted the appointment and scored one with Yunya. Yunya really listened to what I wanted (keep the length, add volume but with minimal layering) and told me exactly what she had in mind and what she was going to do. I really loved the play-by-play and don't really like being surprised when it comes to my hair, so this really worked for me! Yunya also noted that my previous stylist cut my hair funny, and this was useful for future reference (the place is in LA, so I won't badmouth them here!). She fixed what she could, worked her magic, and after some good conversation, I walked out of Dlala (and into the 90 degree heat+humidity) feeling and looking fantastic. The prices are relatively reasonable, too--my cut was $70+tip. I dig the no frills, no-nonsense vibe of this place because I don't like paying for a salon's decor. The place could benefit from A/C (if it was on, I couldn't feel it), but it didn't change my experience. I'll definitely return! read more

Was in desperate need for a hair cut (the last one I had was 5 months ago) and I was looking around on Yelp for Japanese hair salons in Manhattan. There were a few that received ratings that would convince me to go to a specific place (at least 4 stars and up), so I researched each salon, trying to find a good balance between quality and cost. After narrowing the choices down to this and one other salon, Dlala was just a bit cheaper and just happened to have openings for the specific day and time I wanted, as well as another opening for my boyfriend so we could get our hair cut at the same time. I saw that most of the reviewers on here mentioned Coco or Mariko specifically and ended up choosing Mariko. All of the staff was nice, friendly, and attentive to each customer. I was a little concerned about a possible language barrier prior to coming, but that happened to not be a problem at all. Mariko sat me down and took the time to really talk to me about my hair type, how I wanted it cut, and how I wanted the end result to look. I really felt that she's the type of stylist that genuinely cares about making you happy and helping you look your absolute best. I'm usually a little anxious about going to new salons, especially over the outcome, but I felt I was in good hands. Plus, I got a really nice scalp/neck massage when it came time to washing my hair. My haircut came out to be $65 plus tip which is reasonable considering 1) it's in the city, 2) amazinggg quality. She just simply blow dried my hair and it came out looking sleek and perfect. (I have naturally straight hair with a very slight wave towards the ends.) My hair is healthier without losing length and my bangs are spot on. (I asked for bangs I could wear straight down or pushed to the side. Bangs can be tricky and when they're not cut right even just a little bit, they can be real annoying.) Give this salon a shot if you're considering it. Mariko cut my hair and Coco cut my boyfriend's hair. Either stylist is a very safe bet, even if it's your first visit. This place is really incredible, the first spot in NYC that I keep returning to for a great haircut. Yukari is my girl and takes my very thick blonde hair and knows exactly how to layer it, thin it out and make it so that i don't even have to blow dry if i don't want to. She is a god-send. I wanted a fresh new style, and color and got the same old same old and "permanent color" that didn't last a week! They are very nice and if you want the basics i am sure they are great. But, I won't be going back. For the price, I was expecting much much more. read more
