I've been seeing this place going around on the internet and randomly walked by with my friend as we were attempting to walk the entirety of Manhattan. Decided to stop in for a break! I ordered an iced matcha which in itself was nothing special. It's what you expect from a matcha and I appreciated that it wasn't granular or anything. While I was drinking it there were definitely a few times when I had to stir it a little because the matcha was starting to collect at the bottom but nothing crazier than what happens with other matcha lattes I've had. What I really appreciated about this was that there are these syrups on a side table that you can add to your drink to flavor it. They not only have regular simple syrup but also honey, maple, and cinnamon syrups. So I was able to kind of customize my matcha to make it a bit different from drinks I'd get from other places. I added the cinnamon and honey syrups to my drink which added sweetness and flavor to an otherwise already stand up matcha! It was a really warm day so there were people sitting in their little outside seating area, which looked like a great place to catch up with friends or do some work. Cute new cafe in the area, but a lot smaller than expected ): Came here around 10:30am on a Monday and all the indoor seating were all taken. There are three places for seating: inside by the entrance/order station, by the windows near the outdoor seating, and outdoor with heaters. I really wanted to try this place so we sat outside, and it was pretty chilly even with the heaters on the walls. There are no flavor shots here, and so I got a regular hot latte, green tea (comes in a big pot so it justifies the price), and the raspberry tart. We loved the raspberry tart as it wasn't overly sweet but rightly balanced! It was actually a bigger slice than we expected too (: There is free wifi which works really well and a clean bathroom with Aesop products to use. It's a bit hard to get nice seating here though! I had to keep eyeing some customers to see if they will leave to take their spot right away.. ): Not too many outlets nearby either, and it seems like most people come to stay for at least an hour so I would say plan a back up in case you really need to do work!! read more

Matcha latte reminds me of cereal milk that's left at the bottom of your bowl after you've taken down your daily sugar's intake of Fruity Pebbles. That could or could not be deterrent for you based on where you stand on the spectrum of matcha is grass or you're ritually preparing your ceremonial grade matcha. Prices - gawkingly expensive. On a late afternoon while stopping by I was tempted by the matcha citrus tonic. I came to the conclusion that 9.50 for a drink that won't make me feel like I'm on an Island in the sun baked and having fun had no business being that pricey. Instead, I settled for the lesser evil, the $8 matcha latte (before the secondary oat milk add on). For a little snack we decided to treat ourselves to the blueberry cheese-tart. It was a medley of sweet, tart, and the different textures were divine. Not too sweet. The space in the front of the cafe is rather small and cramped. In the corner by the window (a place I enjoy primarily to people watch), the outlet is dirtied with brown stains and splatter. Is it a coffee mishap or just general crustiness? For a cafe thats hipster and boasts itself in the versatility of being a book cafe, also being a bar, and charging out the yang--this seems unacceptable and rather off brand. I will say the patio is a cute touch. As a lizard person, I'm particularly grateful about the heat lamps outside, as well as the large window by the door that you can use to get some sunlight but also be inside if you wish. Something stood out to me as particularly negative here - the staff are rather unfriendly. They give off the vibe that you're bothering them when ordering, which seems to be a pattern based on what I've gathered by some of the reviews here. If I were in the area and all the stars align I would be happy to come back (the weather is gorgeous for patio seating, there is actual patio seating, the staff are friendly and chipper), etc. However, with all the options around for cafe choices, I'll be best on my way. DNFA has a modern hipster aesthetic with plenty of seating with a few tables in the airy window-laden front, an outdoor patio, and many tables towards the back suited for conversations or a reading. I especially loved the tile work in the front with the wooden tables and cork seats, and it makes for a great space for people-watching on a busy street in the West Village. Like many other reviews have already alluded to, the service errs on the side of unfriendly. While ordering and receiving our drinks, we felt as though the staff was annoyed we were actually ordering something. The resentful attitude was certainly off-putting from the very get-go. My friends and I tried several drinks and food items: a latte (skim milk; $6.5), a matcha tonic ($9.5), a regular matcha ($6.5), a slice of flan, a slice of fruit tart ($11), and sourdough with butter ($6.5). Both matcha drinks, particularly the tonic, were good and well-balanced, while the tonic was very refreshing and zingy that would probably be amazing on a hot summer day! The latte was very disappointing as it did not have any robust notes, instead tasting like a stale, dilute instant espresso in milk. The aftertaste was also very weak, bordering on unpleasant. We all shared the food items, with the fruit tart being our favorite. It was light, not too sweet and the custard was so creamy! We also all liked the sourdough, which was light and airy with a beautiful aroma that translated to a fresh and delightful gustatory experience. None of us particularly enjoyed the flan, which was too dense with an overwhelming eggy flavor. It definitely would have benefitted from some vanilla essence to mask the egg, but it also lacked notes of caramel from the otherwise beautiful outer layer. We were also confused by this item because it was labelled flan, but resembled a Basque cheesecake more, but it also did not have the classic texture of either (this had the texture of a very soft brie). In all, DNFA makes for extremely pretty pictures and people watching in a lovely part of town, but the prices are stupefyingly expensive considering the poor quality of coffee, the average quality of regular matcha, pastries being so polarizing. It's a great space and the outdoor seating is a nice surprise. It would be great if it were open later. The white wine selection is the worst I've ever seen anywhere. Bread is hearty with a hard outside and moist inside and butter is lovely, and it also came with dried fruit and nuts. Outdoor seating in the back. Minimalist styling for interior. This review is for the drink alone. My friend picked up a hot hojicha latte for me. It was a really small cup (like a little bigger than dixie cup-sized) and rather pricey for the quantity (~$7). I wasn't particularly impressed by the latte. The milk flavor was stronger than I would have liked and the hojicha was not super-well incorporated so it settled at the bottom of the cup. A coffee shop with some day drinking options. Do Not Feed Alligators is a modern hipster coffee shop. The owner of the place seems to be a photographer and he's got a shelf of his photography books that you can flip through. The prices reflect the neighborhood (west village) and the quality is just good enough to stop by a second time. The food selection is limited but very well done. I would only recommend this to people who already know what to expect in West Village. Tourists may be shocked by the $6.50 price tag on the bread and butter.
