Was looking for coffee in the early afternoon after wandering the area near my +1's Alma mater, NYU. The name caught my eye in an online search, so we headed over. We walked into a tiny old store front with wood, brick, and iron. A 1980s Smith's album was playing. There were black and white photos on the wall. I felt like I'd time traveled, and I liked it. The counter person/baristo took our order but let us know they were closing soon. It was fine, as we ordered espresso and a cortado, which aren't drinks over which I'd linger. Plus, we had other places to go. But the setting reminded me of coffee shops where I'd sit a while and read a book over coffee. I could pass some time here and be quite happy. Coffee was good. Not as harsh as the espresso of the 80s and 90s, thank goodness. read more

Needed some black coffee. This place was fast, coffee was delicious. Loved that I found this place on Yelp! There was a group of women eating their Pop up bagels in the store and there was a sign that said "no eating pop up bagels" but the barista that was working there didn't kick them out or anything. The barista said the reasoning was it gets all over the ground and it's hard to clean up. I guess that's a thing in the neighborhood! read more

My occasional stroll resulted in a sudden quench for coffee, thus leading me to this establishment. The shop itself is quite cozy, but I would not let a claustrophobe within 50 miles of the site. Though this vibe excited me with the addition to the welcoming staff, I would soon plead to my past self for the upcoming suffering. I ordered an iced mocha that was quite literally all milk with a slight chocolate taste, and my acquaintance (sibling), word for word, stated "bro i ordered a f****** ICED VANILLA LATTE with SOY MILK and i got SEWER WATER!!!!" I honestly have never been this disappointed in a coffee shop. The products here are compromised of 99% milk with little to no flavor, and even my mother who genuinely drinks anything threw it in the trash. While my review is quite harsh, I simply want the coffee to improve, and as a future student, I would want to consider this an establishment where I would think highly of. For now, I contemplate transforming into an instant coffee lover and consume black coffee for the remainder of my time. read more

LOVE this spot! I have only been there during the pandemic so I can really only speak to the actual coffee itself and the nice service...oh and the LOCATION! This spot is the perfect place for your "coffee & a walk" dates/hangouts. This cozy spot is located just a block away from Washington Square Park. It is also located by a bunch of great food in the NYU area. So it's a great spot to grab a little pick-me-up after enjoying lunch at a nearby spot! I tried the Mocha here and I have to say I was pretty impressed! It wasn't overpowering in sweetness, they used a single-origin cocoa, the milk was the perfect temperature (not too hot!). I feel like burnt espresso taste and over-steamed milk is far too common in cafes, but this place knows what they're doing! I truly enjoyed this beverage, zero complaints! I will definitely be making this a spot to stop by next time I'm in that part of the city! read more

Cute little coffee shop with a wickedly delicious mocha with oat milk. The perfect balance, not too acidic or basic. Has a hint of chocolate and not sweet at all. This isn't really a place where you work from since the tables are so tiny and there aren't any outlets. It's perfect for catching up with a friend or just grabbing a quick to-go coffee! read more

Let me premise this by saying I'm not a big coffee drinker. However I do appreciate a good cup of iced coffee. A friend of mine who appreciates fine coffee invited me here and I'm glad he did. Third Rail is small, and the offerings are limited. Yet this works perfectly for Third Rail as they make exceptionally good iced brew coffee and some mighty delicious looking pastries. I enjoyed the bold, deep, rich flavors Third Rails Iced brew delivered. Genuine flavors of a fine roasted coffee, not simply a bean that has been burnt beyond recognition and called "coffee". The inside is small but we got a small table to enjoy our beverages. The ambiance is pleasant, a balance of people working/studying and those of us small groups of friends that just were enjoying a damn good cup of coffee. I traveled about and hour in both directions just to taste this coffee and it was well worth it. I highly recommend a visit. Or two, or more....... Enjoy! read more

What I like about the Third Rail Coffee on Sullivan is the vibe. It has a very neighborhood feeling and more importantly, not the rushed feeling you get from many coffee houses in NYC. However, it is very small and seating can sometimes be a premium. The coffee is very good. I ordered latte and found the baristas knew what they were doing. Also, interesting place to people watch if you have the time. read more

Came here for a pick-me-up after a fierce battle with my friend about going to Starbucks. I'm not in NYC to drink coffee at SBux. I guess I'm a snob and a fiend when it comes to coffee. Third Rail Coffee delivered an awesome red eye (a brew with an espresso added to it). Definitely a contender for one of the smoothest red eyes I've had to drink and I had no problem drinking it black. The place itself is small and a regular coffee will run you at least $3, but their smooth brewing methods and friendly service make it worth it! read more

Wow, so that was disappointing. An almond milk latte the size of my fist for $6 served by an incredibly unfriendly cashier and a barista who literally threw my cup at me, in an extremely cramped place, and coffee that was not anything above average at all. It was smooth, but nothing better than the standard level. Not planning to return. read more

I feel terrible about giving them a bad review as I swore by this place - their flat white blew away the others - Even the Aussie rooted 'Banter'. But lately There's a Barista that can't get it right. Even after I told them it still came out awful - I should have just gotten 1 instead of 3!! He runs machine too long and adds too much milk or something else. Bad. The women that work there have never disappointed, so I will not get coffee there until I see who's Barista that day or this fellow can prove he got it right. read more

The shop is pretty tiny, with seating for under 10 people. It's located really near Washington Square Park, and I can see people getting coffee from here to bring out for a walk in summer! They had a large variety of single-origin coffee you could choose from, but I went with their latte ($4.25). The latte itself is pretty good, very creamy and smooth espresso. My boyfriend lives above of this cafe and we used to come here pretty often. The coffee is delicious and strong, however, I get a bit anxious before I go there. The staff is incredibly rude, I must have stopped by at least 15 times, and every time I leave there is this bad taste in my mouth. They barely look at you when you order, and once you do they act annoyed as if they're doing me a favor. They don't have basic manners, such as saying "you're welcome" after I say "thank you." One time I even asked what teas they have and the barista just said "here." and pointed at the options while rolling his eyes as if I asked him for a free ride to the airport. To be honest, solely due to the staff, I go to Irving farm a block over now. Coffee isn't worth the unpleasant experience, especially in the morning. read more

Stopped in there to grab a couple coffees to have with our breakfast. We sat down to wait for our coffees and the guy goes "you can't eat that in here" very aggressively. We were not eating our food, we didn't even pull it out of the bag, we were just waiting on the bench for what ended up being a couple mediocre coffees and lattes. He told us "you can go eat those at the park down the street." We didn't ask but thanks? read more

Third Rail went off the rails for me. On a cold day, in a space so small that there are eight seats, maybe ten, and you're next to NYU, with students needing a hang, takeout is your biz. There were people standing out in the cold to get this brew, so I'm sure that it must be wonderful. Unfortunately, weary business traveler I, I needed to find a place of shelter, to sip my morning clarity, and commune with the web gods for a spell. No room at the Inn, I had to go to Irving Farm around the corner, which was busy, but had a place to sit. I understand the cost of New York commercial space. I ran into a coffee place or two in London of this size. Either get a space where people can stay, or put down no tables, and be take out, with a line that can stay indoors in inclement weather. Or call yourself a coffee club, because it definitely rolls that way when there is not even room for a line to form without standing in the cold. read more

VEGAN OPTIONS - Yes. Oat and almond milk. Got a cappuccino that was very well made. However, I was disappointed that they didn't use Counter Culture beans for the espresso, even though they were on display front and center when I walked in. Apparently they use a different roaster for the espresso shots, and while it was ok, it definitely wasn't the best tasting flavour profile. Next time I will ask for the specific beans I want for my shot. Otherwise a well made cappuccino with great consistency and good non-dairy options. read more

Fantastic coffee! I thought I had a pretty good cappuccino earlier this morning, and then I broke my rule and had a second one at Third Rail. Originally, I rated my initial cappuccino an 8. Then, I had cappuccino at Third Rail, a 10+, and my initial cappuccino went to a 5. This is seriously delicious coffee, right by Washington Square. I have never before reviewed a coffee place, but this one required notice. read more

I wanted to like this cafe as the location was perfect, the people were nice and everything, but the coffee, the beans, the cortado, was a meh! Definitely not the best espresso I have had. Well. Here we go. My first Yelp review. I should preface this by saying I work in a restaurant and I am sympathetic to the grind (pun somewhat intended). It is hard out here! There are days I would rather stab myself in the eye with a Bic pen than talk to anybody. And maybe the concept of "hospitality" in the service industry is entirely fraught to begin with, and a disingenuous expectation to walk around with, especially from hourlies who aren't exactly printing money. But good lord. The disdain. It must get exhausting. The coffee is very good, but it is very good a lot of places, and I see no reason to keep subjecting myself to this. read more

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this location! It is a bit small, maybe with seating for about 10 people, but it never felt cramped. The coffee was good, and average priced. It's not the best size for groups, but with such a close walk to Washington Square Park, I would recommend coming here and then taking your drinks to go for a walk in the park. I also want to give a shout out to the barista working, when I visited - I think his name was Andrew. I was only sitting in the location for maybe 30 minutes, but I was constantly impressed at how welcoming and friendly he was, and also, inclusive. When a customer from Barbados came in, he started asking a bunch of questions and engaging in a dialogue with the man. And then when another customer came in, they started speaking Arabic to each other. It was a very unique multicultural kind of experience that I really valued. read more

I don't know what defines flawless, yet Third Rail is definitely close to whatever that definition is. As tiny as a hole in the wall, Third Rail serves counter culture espresso, one of those better local roasted beans in the city. Their cappuccino was creamy, foamy, less intense, yet carried a light nutty fragrance - I simply could not think of a better way to start my morning! Great beans, chill vibes! I have been to their East Village location about a year ago, and this Greenwich village location is consistently good! Wish they could bring more locations into the city, as I'm clearly fall in love with it. read more

I wonder if it's due to COVID, but their store really has turned itself into a hole-in-the-wall where it's literally just a counter you can order from. There are 2 tiny tables with few chairs in front if you want to sit. It's actually not bad if the weather allows. I ordered Latte with Almond Milk and despite of serving it in paper cups with lid, they still create the typical heart latte art. Much appreciated. The latte was really good! I feel like the coffee was not too strong, which is great to have after lunch time so you don't have to worry if it will disturb your sleep hygiene. Service was quick and nice. There might be a lot of places with cheaper coffee than here, but for the taste I think it's reasonable read more

I just moved to an office near here. I've easily spent 5 days worth of a paycheck here. I decided to pop in when I saw people relaxing and laughing, enjoying their cold brews, through the window. It looked appealing. The place is small, but the vibe is amazing. Not a lot of work space, but great to meet someone and chat briefly. I've been on an oat milk kick lately, so I recommend the cold brew with oat milk. I love coffee and you can bet that this is my new spot. I've also heard the blueberry (could potentially be acai?) lemonade/tea is great too. Thanks Third Rail! read more

Absolutely spectacular coffee. I'm not some weird coffee person, far from it. I don't drink a ton of it, but I do enjoy it from time to time. What I had here was special. Unlike most coffee, which I find needs lots of sugar to counter the bitter, burnt notes that overwhelm my palate. This was just so rich and flavorful. Excellent job and friendly service too. read more

Best coffee I've had in the city hands down out of maybe 15-20 different shops. As long as I'm within reasonable walking distance this will be my go to destination. Yesterday I had a large latte, the espresso made with Stumptown Beans, one of the most popular roasts around. After that I had an out of body experience with an Ethiopian chemex, bits of cherry flavor and dark carmel flavors coming through. Not being a local I quickly found out this small chain has an outstanding reputation and it's easy to see why. I'll be back. NOTE: cash only. Not a problem with me. Small space, if you get a seat you're lucky. It's busy. Not a place to hang out for hours although they do have wireless. read more

OK, I'm trying really hard to think of another time I've had a better cup of coffee and ... I've got nothing. Hands down best latte I've ever had. Definitely worth the five minutes it takes for the barista to prepare it and the no credit card policy. It's also refreshing to see baristas who seem to genuinely love their job. Oh and the chocolate filled croissant was out of this world. I wasn't even that hungry but once I bit into it, it took less than a minute to finish it off. Sad but so so good. read more

The interior itself is antique, quaint, and there's minimal (but some!) seating for you to enjoy your tea at. One of my favorite parts of this shop is that their tea menu is all around the shop, right on their walls. So, you walk around the shop, look at the different teas (organized by type, caffinated/non-caffinated), smell them, and read the labels. I had a lot of fun doing this! Their prices are good and their teas are amazing. Definitely a cool experience!

Never heard of tongmu lapsang but Google says it's a type of smoked black tea from China. The drink had notes of hazelnut in it. I never had a nutty, chocolatey tea flavor combo before so it was refreshing to taste.

I have absolutely no words for this drink, just try it. 100/10 recommend. This is probably my favorite one out of the 3 that I bought. I ordered an iced matcha einspanner ($6.95) with oat milk ($0.75) and loved that it already comes with a shot of espresso, so it was essentially a dirty matcha einspanner. I tried each layer on its own before mixing everything together and it was all really good. The matcha cream is the right amount of sweet and creamy and you can taste the matcha with just a hint of coffee. Since I'm a coffee fiend I added a bit more espresso when I got back to the hotel and it tasted even better while still keeping the matcha as the dominant flavor. Next time I would ask for less ice since it was freezing that morning, but on a warmer day the ice level would be perfect. Would love to come back to try their other drinks or order the einspanner again as a hot drink.

I've worked in restaurants and bars long enough to understand that staff drinking happens, but this was on another level entirely. I came in with a group of friends and one of the bartenders, Will, was so visibly drunk that it made the entire experience uncomfortable. Slurred speech, wobbling behind the bar, taking orders while chewing food with his mouth open -- it was honestly embarrassing to watch. He looked like he absolutely did not want to be there. At one point, my group had been trying to get his attention for another round for quite a while while he stood around talking with coworkers. We then watched staff take a shot together, and when he finally came over he burped mid-conversation and literally had whatever he had just been drinking dribbling down his neckbeard. That was the moment where the whole thing went from unprofessional to just gross. What made it worse was that it didn't seem isolated to one employee. Throughout the night we watched staff openly taking shots and drinking behind the bar like it was a house party instead of a business. There's a difference between bar culture and complete lack of professionalism, and this crossed that line hard. One of the friends I was with actually frequents the DUMBO location and said that the last time she was there, the same bartender also seemed intoxicated, which makes this feel less like a bad night and more like an ongoing issue. The DUMBO location itself is in an amazing spot, which makes it even more disappointing. But ownership seriously needs to get control of what's going on there before someone gets hurt or the place develops a reputation for having drunk staff on the clock. Unfortunately, the experience was uncomfortable enough that my girlfriends and I won't be coming back. I genuinely hope the employee mentioned gets help if this is a regular thing, because nobody should be working service in that condition.
