I went in for an ombré/balayage color service with Brandi. I texted her a picture of my hair beforehand, and a picture of what I wanted to get. She was friendly, but began to start right away before even talking to me about what I wanted. So, we began by having miscommunications right off. I wanted a red brown base color with blond balayage highlights. My hair was naturally brown at the roots and red brown at the ends because of grown out box dye color. She wanted to just give me red brown and blonde balayage highlights, instead of doing the base red brown color. I stated multiple concerns about having a rainbow of brown, blonde, and red hair, but she told me not to worry, and that she wouldn't let me leave the salon a mess. Apparently it's not possible to get the roots dyed at the same time because of the way they do balayage at their salon. They TEASE the hair up, they do not paint the dye on like some other salons. It hurt...I had Brandi, another stylist, and myself all working to untangle my hair from the teasing for over an hour. I liked the red, but my blonde ended up being orange, while the highlights looked grown out, as if I hadn't been to a salon in months. I voiced my concerns and Brandi recommended using purple shampoo for a couple of weeks. I paid $400 before leaving. I texted her after a few weeks of using purple shampoo, still not happy. But she said she just did what I wanted, and that I should have complained before leaving the salon.... Well, NOW I know I should kick up more of a fuss at salons if I'm unhappy with something, and just leave if they can't do the style I request. I regret spending so much money here, then spending money on purple shampoo, color corrector from Sally's, and finally 3 boxes of hair dye to get my hair back to how it was BEFORE going to this salon. What a relief to find an awesome hair salon on my first try! Having just moved, I had so many things to worry about, I started to neglect my hair needs, which just makes me feel worse. I am very picky about my highlight color, so to leave my go-to guy was like breaking up with a boyfriend all over again, but after I went through the 5 stages of grief, I knew I had to start the search. I've been going to Lindsey at Do or Dye for almost a year now! I found them on yelp/ Instagram. First off, my hair was not virgin hair and had been dyed many times before. I had a darker brown and wanted a bright copper so I first reached out to Brandi. At Do or Dye they self schedule and are realistic with you about your expectations. She ended up referring me to Lindsey who had time to schedule me in the month that I wanted. We started with a copper to blonde balayage when I had long hair. The cut and color turned out fabulous and I loved it. I continued to go back over the course of the year and expressed how I wanted to try a LOB (long bob), and especially since I trusted Lindsey with my hair at this point. With no regrets she made it look just as good. Also, she's been nothing but understanding about my night shift schedule and super considerate about scheduling me in the afternoon, and of course offering me coffee as soon as I walk in. Love! I had been referred to Do or Dye by a good friend of mine and had high hopes before my first visit but unfortunately left incredibly disappointed. I am naturally a dirty blonde and have been getting all over highlights since I can even remember and I would say the last three years I have also been doing a base break on top of the highlights after processing the same day. I was incredibly disappointed with my hair when I left the salon and honestly looked as if I had not my hair done at all. The response I got when I stressed to the stylist my concern was that she had put as many highlights as she could in one appointment with the time that she had... mind you, I booked the appointment requesting a full highlight and hair cut and left with a have done head with at least two inches of root. This was incredibly frustrating as I have never had my hair done ever where it did not look like something had been done in one appointment and is not something a customer would want to hear after paying $300. I had gone back in on Tuesday this week because the only recommendation at that time was to wait (which my hair again had about 2 inches of root still), get a base break or would need to pay another $300 to get another full highlight. Because I had already wasted $300 and there was ZERO concern for this and needed to be cautious of money, I had decided to do a base break which made it even worse. I had mentioned to the stylist in the salon that I felt like it looked almost orange and said she used the "ashiest" tone she had but clearly was 100% wrong. I ended up having to go to a totally different salon who were incredible and could not believe how I had been treated and as a paying customer was given zero attention to my situation and was pretty much told to take a hike or spend more money. My hair was only made better by a total different salon and someone who took the time to help me. Although I had to pay double to get it fixed, I trusted that anyone else but Do or Dye or fix the situation and had the error happened with them, they would have made it right. I reached out to the owners of the Salon as well and have not heard a single thing back. If you are looking for a salon that has great stylist and impeccable customer service, turn around and walk away because you WILL NOT find it at Do or Dye. I've been dying my hair blonde since I was 16 and have used several salons. The damage to my hair was obvious. When I moved to Houston I started seeing Will at Do or Dye and the health of my hair did a 180. Within minutes of meeting him he gave me a long term plan for us to follow to get my hair back to looking healthy. I let him cut off inches of my dead, frayed, split ends and have never regretted it! He turned other salon's yellowed/copper blonde into a natural looking soft blonde. I used to fret over my roots and notice them immediately, now I can hardly tell my roots have grown in because they have been so well blended into my hair. The major difference I see is in how fast my hair is growing and how much stronger it is. Will is an excellent beautician. He's very congenial and easy to talk to. He focuses on your comfort when you're with him and often checks on you, he asks frequently if he's pulling strands too tight or simple things like if you would like something to drink. He's a very soothing person to be around! If you're looking for someone new I highly recommend Will! read more

I have spent 4 days trying to get an appointment at this salon. I have contacted one of the owners for an appointment and she went back and forth with me over text, asked me for pics of my hair so she could determine how much time would be needed, but I haven't heard from her since I sent the pics (I just have normal long hair). So I tried emailing another stylist, no reply. I don't get it. I have spent 4 days TRYING to do something that should take less than 5 minutes. Update: The other stylist finally sent me an email 3 days later saying he could fit me in on the date I requested. But by this time, I had already booked an appointment with another stylist in the Heights area (via online booking). I did get a private message via Yelp from the owner who responded down below apologizing for the inconvenience and giving me a list of other salons that I should contact. There was no offer to get me booked in her salon in that message. By the way, if you are still hunting for a good stylist, try calling Douglas in the Heights. He has a yelp review so you can find his contact info there. He has a small salon on the same property as his house. He was able to cut my hair and add highlights in about 2 hours. And he has online booking and responds to emails/phone calls in a timely manner. I have friends who go to Do or Dye and they highly recommended it. I think once they get their online booking situation figured out, it might be worthy of more stars. I just can't say that from experience. read more

I thought I had done my research but sadly I was mistaken. I went in for a trim and color. Rebecca Parsons told me my light brown hair was damaged and then cut 8 to 10 inches off my hair. I'd be upset about that but she also dyed my light brown hair black. She did offer to do a correction on the color. Now my natural light brown hair is orange. It will be years before this grows out. And to top that off my hair is naturally frizzy (curly) so the bleach and the short length makes me look like an orange cosmetic puff. Not the look I was hoping for. To top it all off my blouse was also ruined. In 50 years of getting hair done this is the first time I've had my blouses bleached. Find someone else. If I could give a zero I would! A newly opened and super well-equipped hair salon/skincare studio in Montrose with the BEST stylists around! My hair always looks uber fantastic when I leave. I really cannot say enough nice things about the place. I have been a regular with Grace, who is a hair genius, for 6 years and followed her to many salons. Out of them all, this one is by far my favorite. Here's why: Color table where you can paint your nails with great OPI colors while you wait for your hair color to process. Hot damn! Spacious, new interior that is decorated and scented with a terrific design aesthetic. Mint blue walls, lots of natural wood textures, and great layout. I truly appreciate the lack of Visible Changes-esque craptastic house music and overpowering hairspray smell. A dimly lit and lovely smelling shampoo room so you can relax during your washout. Super nice staff and lots of windows with a street view of beautiful old trees while getting your hair done. I think I even may want to live there. While Do or Dye doesn't need another gushing review, I didn't see much written about Will so here's my take. The salon is beautiful, has a comfortable, laid back vibe, and easy free parking behind the building. All great things. I booked with Will online because of the convenience- I'm not interested in texting someone back and forth to set up an appointment. His scheduling system takes thirty seconds, such a plus. He did an AMAZING job on my hair. I went in with horrible roots and badly needing a cut, and he took the time to ask questions and show me color samples to make sure we were on the same page. Chatting with him wasn't forced or awkward as with some stylists- he's such a genuinely nice guy and was so easy to talk to. He colored my hair perfectly and blended the roots, and confirmed the amount he would cut off (again, major plus). I will become a loyal client of Will's; I see no reason to go to anyone else for a haircut in Houston. read more

I have followed her from other salons over the years and she absolutely knows the best way to cut my thin, wavy/curly hair so that it isn't out of control or high maintenance. I love this place! This salon has a great, positive vibe with talented and creative people that make you feel welcomed. I've been going to Brandi for quite some time now and she never ceases to amaze me. She always makes sure that my hair looks perfect and that I'm 100% in love with it. I've never once felt rushed, which is rare nowadays. Regardless of the hairstyle I choose, Brandi is always on point. I've gone from extreme and exaggerated hairstyles to clean-cut, preppy styles and I'm always leaving the salon more than satisfied. I browsed the website and balked as I realized it would be a month before I could get an appointment with the stylist I wanted. I wondered if this was economics at work. Maybe, she was super crafty and realized that if you create an artificial shortage you can create a demand...then, I realized I was overthinking it and booked the appointment. Each of the stylists book their own appointments and you need to either text them or use a website to book an appointment. I like the option of dealing with as little personal interaction as possible, so you're not worried that you're bothering someone or interrupting something. I arrived at 9am on a Saturday morning. The staff was friendly and asked if I would be interested in a beverage. The space has an open layout and they use painted pipework to hold up the mirrors that are propped up in front of every stylist. Jodi was very friendly and had a welcoming demeanor. We launched into a discussion on what I wanted to do. I had decided to chop off 10 inches of hair and instead of telling me I'd be more satisfied with a longer cut, she and I discussed how to build the best version of the haircut for my face. As she was cutting my hair, she let me know that I needed a lot of little layers to make a seemingly "layerless" look. My long bob needed a lot of movement, so she needed to take out the dreaded razor. She double checked the length that I wanted and talked me through the process of shaping my hair. She did a great job and made my experience educational as well as pleasant. She does one complimentary bang trim between appointments. read more

I have been going to Do or Dye for a solid couple of months now, and to be honest, the thought of going anywhere else doesn't ever cross my mind. For years I have struggled to find a salon that would ever book me with the same person, nor did I ever feel a connection to the haircuts I received. The first time I booked at Do or Dye, I was set up with Lindsey and explained to her that I was looking for a very short cut and some crazy color. They only had a few colors on hand, blue, purple,and pink, so I did blue. Lindsey was excited for my haircut and the bold color choice, and did a great job bleaching, cutting and coloring. She even sold me this awesome texturizing powder she used without being pushy at all. It seems all the stylists' cards have their own phone numbers on them, so I was actually able to schedule my next appointment over a text message. I came back for my next appointment and Lindsey had gotten her hands on a whole bunch of colors! Yellow, magenta, red, blue, teal, purple, & pink. Lindsey did this awesome hombre of yellow, magenta, and teal for my birthday trip to New Orleans. The yellow was the best surprise....it lasted and stayed vibrant for over a month! Also, it is worth noting they have super comfy hair washing stations, and the studio is just super cool. I have not been able to convince any of my friends to try Do or Dye, because the prices are admittedly high, but I always tip generously because I love this place, love my stylist, and I find the service worth the costs. read more

I am over the moon for my haircut from Jodi! I recently relocated from Austin and had terrible luck finding a stylist that could match my Austin gurus skills until I came across Jodi's stellar reviews! She gave me an awesomely versatile Jessica Biel layered cut and restored a lot of the body and oomph that had grown out. She didn't push any products on me nor did she get scissor happy and chop off more than she needed to. I really appreciate a stylist that truly listens and delivers...and Jodi superseded my expectations. I have been going to Ashley at Do or Dye for almost two years now. She is amazing! A couple years ago I wanted the trendy ombre hair color, so I booked an appointment at Visible Changes in the Galleria making sure to tell them multiple times that I wanted ombre, I even brought in pictures. What I ended up with was not ombre, but highlights. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't what I wanted. I began to dive into the internet and research hair stylists that specialize in the ombre technique. I was immediately directed to Do or Dye, it seemed like the entire salon specialized in this technique. Done. I called the main number listed on the website and spoke with a nice lady (I now know as Alex), and she explained to me that the stylists are all independent and to schedule an appointment you must contact them directly. Contact information is on the website. I ended up talking to Ashley; she specializes in curly textured hair and ombre! Yes!! I had to wait about 2 months for an appointment (she books up fast), but it was worth the wait. When I finally got into Ashley's chair she looked at my hair, talked with me about what I want, we discussed where I want my style to go long-term and well as what I wanted right now. She listened and she gave me exactly what I wanted. I left her chair feeling beautiful. Couldn't be happier or luckier to have found her. I am the type of person that goes to a different salon every couple of months, and can't commit to a stylist; well I used to be that person. Almost two years later and I have not strayed or cheated on Ashley. My hair is the best it has ever looked; I get compliments all the time. She has taught me how to wear it so that my natural curls will shine and not look frizzy. (I used to straighten my hair every day, now I only straighten it 2 or 3 times a week.) I researched this salon a couple of years ago and decided this was the place I was going to treat myself at. I had zero color in my hair and wanted some highlights so I was super picky about where to go, I didn't want to regret dying my virgin hair. I read their entire website and decided to email a couple of their stylists. NO REPLY. Figuring they were very busy due to all their good reviews, I patiently waited. I waited about a year and never heard back. Figured it wasn't meant to be at the time. Emailed another stylists from their site a year later. Again, no reply. I was kinda aggravated that nobody wrote me back to at least say they were booked, or to refer me to someone else. After waiting a couple more months I decided to try one more time. Third times the charm, right? That's when Wil texted me back right away! I was SO HAPPY! We set up a time right away and I went in the following week. I was prepared to wait a while to get an appointment, but he was willing to work with my schedule. I felt welcomed immediately. I was pumped. I brought in a picture of the color I wanted, and he spent time discussing my ideas and then gave his opinion which I welcomed. I didn't feel rushed, I felt like he was just as excited as I was for my change. I appreciate being made to feel welcome. I loved my end result, and felt I had made a friend in Wil by the time I left. I will be back to see Wil very soon. Brandi is the best!! Not only is she super sweet and really funny, she's given me the best hair color of my life. I first came to her after a disaster with box dye and she managed to get my hair from almost black to a perfect shade of red. Every time I have gone to see her, my hair has looked better and better...I didn't even think that was possible! She actually listens to what I have to say about how much time I'm willing to put into my hair each morning and found a perfect cut to bring out my natural texture so that I don't need to spend hours with a flat iron or blow dryer. Color correction/Silver hair transition: Grace is amazing. I made a choice to grow out my grey hair, and this frightens most colorists. Grace is the first colorist I have gone to who supports this decision, is willing to work with it, and has the technical capabilities to make this process an enjoyable one. I have all of the hair qualities that are difficult for a stylist; greying, previous color damage, high porosity, warm undertones, thick, long, curly, and tangles easily. My hair had 7 months of salt and pepper grow-out next to a dark band of color, next to yellow and orange ends. She blended it all into a gorgeous ash blonde, and I will continue to go to her for highlights and toner until my hair is 100% naturally white/ silver. I've been to many experienced and talented colorists throughout my life, and Grace is the first I've been to that did not get frustrated by how challenging my hair is. Do or Dye is by far my favorite place in the world to get a haircut. Super friendly, super talented stylists. Awesome vibe. I've never had a problem getting a timely appointment. I know I'm always gonna walk out with an awesome cut. Love this place and even though we lived 45 minutes away, it's always worth the drive. Lindsey is the best. She has been cutting my hair for several years now. She's such a kind person - you can tell she genuinely cares about her clients. Not to mention she always nails it. I typically come in and give her a super basic idea, and she runs with it and makes it awesome. I'm not sure I can let anyone else cut my hair again. I've been to lots of places for haircuts, but I never had a "this is my jam" moment until I walked into Do Or Dye. read more
