Upon the recommendations posted on Nextdoor and Yelp, I decided to try Mercer Salon for a haircut and colour. I went in on a Saturday to make my appointment specifically with Odilia for the following Wednesday. Fortunately, I was able to briefly speak with her to discuss what I wanted - highlights [3 colours] and a good haircut; she told me her prices for each and, being in line with what I've paid in the past, solidified the appointment. I arrived at 11:30 am. We took a few minutes to discuss what I wanted, both in colour and cut. I repeated that I wanted highlights and that I usually have three colours used; I showed her two different pictures of my own hair colour for reference. Odilia commented, "You really like your golden blonde." (see profile photo) Was told that I would be out of there in "three hours, tops" (sounds about right - I have lot of hair). Odilia comes out with two tubs of colour - a highlight and a lowlight. I never asked for a lowlight, but this is not my profession and maybe she sees something I don't. This was a very slow process. Literally. I have never in my life had the back of my hair finish processing and be rinsed before the rest of my hair is processed under a dryer. When the colouring is complete, there is cutting. A lot of cutting. More cutting than I requested, but my hair grows fast and it's really not a big deal. And, in all honesty, it is a good healthy cut. FIVE HOURS + LATER (yes, you read that correctly) and nearly $400 lighter - I walk out with taupe / light brown hair. Not even close to what I asked for when I walked in. And I was charged for lowlights, something I never requested. Salon lighting is always different than home lighting, so I thought maybe it wasn't really as dark as it appeared. Nope, it was. I immediately called the salon and spoke with Odilia, explaining that nobody's happy and this isn't going to work. Giving credit where credit is due - she offered to correct it immediately, but my time constraints did not allow for me to return for two weeks. During this time, girlfriends said the colour was beautiful (honestly, it was)...but definitely not "my" colour. While many of you may have had, or continue to have, a positive experience at this salon - I did not. read more

Vielka is a magician. My bangs were a disaster. The whole framing around my face was a disaster. She is a perfectionist and took her time to fix it. That was the first time. Just went a second time and just as good! She is great. The women that work at the front desk are amazing too. Always so nice and smiling and laughing. I've always been made to feel really welcome. In 2010, my hair morphed into five different colors (at different hair levels to boot). Not intentionally, mind you, but because I colored it once, went on a tropical vacation, had keratin treatment upon return, went on yet another beach destination, dyed it yet another color, and basically exposed my hair into very volatile situations. Let's just say that by year's end my hair had a color gradient going from jet black at the crown to light brown at the tips. It was not pretty. I needed MAJOR color expertise. A few months back a girlfriend of mine invited me to the grand opening of Mercer Salon on Washington. It was a beautiful event catered by the surrounding businesses (Catalan, etc) and they held a raffle that benefited Texas Children's Hospital. I originally went as a guest of my girlfriend who has been a devotee of Vielka, her stylist of many years and owner of Mercer Salon. It was a lovely event and I meant to give her a try soon after but got busy with work/life/events. When the holidays approached and I couldn't get an appointment with my regular hair stylist in short notice, my girlfriend reminded me about Vielka and we both made appointments for a salon date. So one very early (ahem, 8am early) Saturday morning, we made our way to Mercer on Washington. When I first took my long hair out of my (very lazy) bun, Vielka ran her hands through it, fluffed it a bit, and then called her apprentice over. I was a bit nervous at first because she was so quiet and looked deep in thought over my rainbow of a hairdo. As soon as her apprentice came over, the barrage of questions commenced: What color level would you call this? And how would you treat her hair? What density level? The INTENSE questioning went on for what seemed like an eternity and even I felt nervous for the girl being questioned. However, it did make me feel secure to know that Vielka took the time to "investigate" my hair and made me aware of how much knowledge she had regarding the color process. After the interrogation, I was asked what color I would like. Honestly, I don't know much about hair colors and I had a hard time describing what I wanted: "brown, but not dark brown...maybe light brown, but not shiny light brown...maybe blonde...but for dark skin tones." In other words, I had no clue what I wanted. I half jokingly said that I wanted to try blonde. Seeing my struggle with the color decision, Vielka whipped out a magazine with Jessica Alba on the cover. "Like this?" she asked. WHO WAS I TO REFUSE A JESSICA ALBA LOOK-ALIKE HAIR COLOR?! Four hours later (hey, I have lots of hair and again, the mantra "short term pain-long term pleasure" is appropriate here), I came out dark blonde. It took several hair processes to ensure my hair came out evenly and with "depth" as she called it but it's probably the most flattering color I've ever had in my entire 21(+) yr old life. I plan to stay blonde for 2011. Now if only I can stay away from the beaches next year. read more

The salon is clean, quiet, and very professional. The front host is very generous and nice. Even if the stylist/nail tech is behind she is genuine on making sure you feel at ease while waiting to be serviced. I had a nail appointment with Kena. She is nothing short of amazing! Every time I'm in her chair she makes me feel comfortable and she caters to all my needs. I've been meaning to do this for quite some time...but, better late than never, right?! As sad as it may be, I don't even remember the exact date I came to Mercer...I am new to Houston (from Seattle) and I think I was here 2-3 weeks before I desperately needed my roots touched up..so sometime around mid-late July. I first went to another salon (which will remain nameless) and it turned out to be a disaster. With all of the good reviews here, I figured Mercer would be a good choice as a "safe salon" to get my hair fixed..... At the tine Vielka was out on maternity leave so I was welcomed to Megan and Denny, both super sweet! The salon was very quiet, the whole time I was there, I only saw one other guy come in for a haircut. Denny did a great job of understanding what I wanted/needed (some low lights and toner) and did a wonderful job of executing this. He also recommended the mini Keratin treatment for $30 which only took 15 mins and supposedly cut down on drying time as well as helping to repair the hair. I'm not sure I saw much improvement from the Keratin treatment beside my hair being a little extra shiny for about a week. The only complaint I have is the price. They charged an extra $30 just to dry my hair after the color (I didn't get a cut), which with the foil and the Keratin treatment came to $225. I personally think this is just ridiculous. If the salon was super upscale, I could understand....but for the location/feel/service, It was not worth my $225 for just a foil and mini keratin treatment. In Seattle at a pretty upscale salon, I could get a full foil AND haircut for less than this. Mercer, if you lowered your prices, I think you would see a lot more business, just saying :) I'm going to experiment with some other salons in my area and will probably not be back to Mercer unless they are running a special, lower prices, or cut out the $30 blow dry! read more

I'm a picky girl when it comes to my hair and Vielka does a great job with putting up with me! Since I've started seeing her 6 months ago, my shoulder length hair is mid back and looks SO healthy. She does an amazing blowout and cut - its stylish and always looks great. She's recently hired Denny, who is really good too. He's got a funny laugh that can put some off, but he's a really sweet guy who, it turns out, is respectful and has done my hair a couple of times when I needed to get in and Vielka couldn't see me. He's good and was really careful about the health of my hair. I've also seen him tackle a womans hair that was AWFUL when she walked it - terrible bleach job and a big chunk missing in back - when Denny was done, she walked out looking AMAZING. So. Yeah, I'm a fan of his too. The environment is very friendly - everyone who works there is really nice and you can read your paper in silence or gossip about whatever you want to - they're up for anything. They aren't cheap, but neither was the guy I used to see that didn't do nearly as good of a job and was late most times. Initially I was a walk in, so I know they do take those. They just seem to be pretty busy these days, so not sure if that's still the case. read more

I purchased a bloomspot deal for a cut and blow dry. I made an appointment far in advance with Vielka (the owner) after reading many great reviews about her. I showed up 10 minutes early to my appointment, and the receptionist tells me that my appointment is not for another 6 days....?!?! I'm not sure what happened with the communication when I made the appointment and I'm pretty certain they told me to come at the time I showed up (put it in my phone right away). The receptionist said I could come back 6 days later at the time they had me in the system, or I could see Lucy instead. I was pretty annoyed at this point. I went on my lunch break during work with the expectation that the owner would be giving me a haircut. I just figured whatever, I'm here--might as well just get it cut because I was asking for something fairly simple. Fortunately, it turned out for the better. I'm very happy with the haircut Lucy gave me and she listened to what I wanted. Her usual rate is $55 for a cut and blowdry, which is pretty reasonable for the quality salon and location you're getting. I'm really curious though what it would have been like if I had Vielka cut my hair. read more

I have been here twice now for all over color and hair cut. Vielka has amazing attention to detail, she really takes her time with each client! My first time there she spent a long time making sure she understood exactly what color I wanted - showed me color comparisons to the picture I brought, and explained the processes to me. She asked a lot of questions and when she colored my hair she got it spot on - exactly what I wanted! I came back today to get the same color and she got it spot on again and spent the same amount of time being very careful and detailed about the color process and trimming up my layers. I have long hair and she does an amazing job at keeping it long but also putting in some layers that give it amazing body and it looks styled even when all I've done is blow dried it. What a great surprise! I had been going to the Boardroom for 6 months or so was kind of over the "guy theme". But, then they messed up my appointment and left me hanging. I went driving down Washington to find some place for a cut and saw Mercer Salon, called 'em and they got me in right away! I don't imagine that "walk ins" are common. It's a small, very nice place and they seem to be quite busy. Vielka, the owner, cut my hair and did a fabulous job. I don't have a real fancy do.. I have lots of straight hair so, the challenge is making it look interesting and less straight. Vielka knocked it out of the park! Plus, she's super sweet and fun to talk to. First, it has to be said; Vielka is a GENIUS when it comes to hair. I've been coming to Vielka for almost 7 years back when she had taken over Shiny Hair Salon. I'm very particular about who cuts my hair, and I am so thankful to have found her. I have followed her from Shiny Hair, to the Westheimer, and now to Mercer Salon, and as long as I live in Houston, I will trust no one more than I do her. So why do I love her so much? The first time I went in, she talked to me for a while trying to get a feel for who I am and what I wanted, and like kindred spirits she gave me a haircut unmatched to anything I had before. Vielka has given me a variety of haircuts, from conservative to ultra-creative. We've played with my hair color turning by dark brown hair to red and Blondie. The benefit also goes both ways; she has always told me that she appreciates me as a man, letting her have fun cutting my hair. Every time, she has done my hair, she has done it with great skill and professionalism. She doesn't rush. She's very meticulous. She is just a great stylist and colorist. Additionally, she surrounds herself with other great hair stylists. Trusting no one else more than I do Vielka means that I also trust her judgment when it comes to the people she works with. So I have gotten cuts from others that have worked at Mercer. Scarlet has cut my hair before and she did a great job as well. After talking my cousin into going to see Vielka, she started having Scarlet do her hair and it has always come out looking fabulous. Mercer is just a great place over all. I am not the type to post reviews. However, maybe what I experienced today will help another woman with a decision as to where and how to get help for a SERIOUS HAIR mal function. I was debating for a couple of weeks, checked out other hair salons and their reviews on line and decided on Mercer Salon. I made the appointment with Mercer Salon convincing myself that oh well this is a daring experience (my previous hair stylist had moved so I decided to try something and someone different.) Convincing myself that hey my hair grows fast, so what's the worst that could happen? My hair was down my back a couple of months ago and I was talked into cutting it into a bob at another salon. It looked great for a couple of months than I began to get the jokes that I resembled Martha Stewart. I am not sure if my friends meant before Martha went to jail or after, but yep I could see they were right. I was nervous as I explained to Denny what I wanted and what I did not want which was the bob look any longer. Denny listened and he got his book of hair colors. His consulting was intense, professional and honest. I could tell he knew he had a job on his hands. My hair was a bob cut all right and included approximately 5 colors of gold, a heavy mixture of gray, strong wiry and frizzes galore. However, Denny was cool and calm explaining every little detail he was going to do one of the best parts was his personality. He never brought up the subject of what could have possibly happened to my hair for it to be so unhealthy or lead me to believe that it was an impossible job to handle. He knew what I was looking for and explained all the results. In other words he didn't try to give me a color and cut that would result in high maintenance. Once he started cutting I tried not to look in the mirror thinking I would rather wait until he would finish and besides I was embarrassed as it was that I had such an awful hair dilemma. Long story short.... I walked out of Mercer Salon looking like one of those extreme makeovers you see on Good Morning America in New York! Denny did a MAGIC WAND on my hair. When I walked in Mercer Hair Salon my hair was what my college graduate daughter stated "a hot mess!" Now its an absolutely outstanding short cut (something to the effect of a Halle Berry hair style) that becomes me. It looks so healthy with slight spiking thickness on top and the color is what I would say in some lighting a light brown with some dark copper mixture. I was totally shocked to say the least. The cut, the color, the style makes me look like a professional working "older" woman with confidence now. The environment and atmosphere of Mercer was comfortable, no one rushing the customers, sophistication if obvious, current magazines, friendly, peaceful and yes it just simply felt right being there. Denny is so sweet, he gave full attention to my hair, to every little part of my head those scissors were chopping away.. God knows his job was sacrificing to tackle this thick head of gold bad case of frizzes. I am so glad I have chosen Mercer to be my salon and recommend them to anyone especially when you know you have a bad "hair day" or you want a new makeover. He also made sure I knew what to do with my hair once I would wake up the next day. Not as expensive as I thought it would be. But hey, well worth the money. I walked out looking great and feeling great. My friends saw me today (day after) and were in total disbelief as to how a change in hair color and a short hair cut changed my whole appearance and as one friend stated "took off about 10 years!" read more

Denny at Mercer Salon is ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! I walked in with black hair and walked out with gorgeous dark red hair with low lights. For those who don't know, black is a ridiculously difficult color to overcome, especially after dying it black for 3 years. Along with fantastic color, this is the first haircut I would actually classify as a trim. As a person who has the fear of a "trim" becoming more of a chopping of 6 months growth, it makes me cringe to hear the word haircut. However, Denny has changed this perception. Along with being very talented and friendly, he listens to what you want, tells you what is realistic, and is concerned with keeping your hair in tiptop shape. I didn't get the pleasure of meeting Vielka, but Denny and Megan were both exceptionally welcoming. If I could give 6 stars I would. I LOVE this chic, modern boutique salon. It's right on the Washington Corridor. Very accessible to the West End-Rice Military Area. I come here about 3-4 times every month. The owner and the staff are always charming, accommodating, and very professional. Scott takes is AMAZING!!! 5 Year Customer: I am extremely particular about who touches my glorious, full bodied, beautiful locks of hair. Vielka is the best, for men and women, period. Pros: Shop is always clean, chairs are comfy, shampoo and scalp massage is great, always a lot of options for product on hand and the best part....,there is always a COLD BEER, mimosa, champagne, or vino waiting for you when you walk in!! Cons: Spensy, but, for men the service comes with a trim up you can do after a few weeks. I'm a big believer that you get what you pay for, so if you want your $7 dollar Supercut go get it your going to look like it. A bad haircut sticks out like a sore thumb A decent haircut doesn't get noticed A good haircut makes you stand out and people notice that "Hey, this fellow/lady makes a real effort and takes care of themselves". Looking sharp with a baller haircut announces your presence, can help you pick up that dime piece chick, land that job or promo, and doesn't hurt chances with getting better customer service. In 2008, I had done a Japanese thermal hair straightening and about 1/3 of my hair had broken off at the root. When it started growing back, it was like the worst 80s mullet ever. I needed a new hairdresser desperately. I asked a friend who did her hair & she recommended Vielka. When I called, I think I tried to explain, but it was clear my hair was way worse than she expected when I walked in. I told her, "I know it's bad, just tell me how long to fix it?". She said one year. She trimmed what she could, dyed it back to its natural color and told me to come in every six weeks. Within about 6 months, it was ok. Within a year, it was back to being good hair. I've been with Vielka ever since. She works with her customers to develop styles that work with their lives. I moved to Houston a few yew are ago and have been trying different salons and am happy to say that I love Mercer Salon! Definitely found my go to spot. I had an appointment with Odilia today and she was amazing!!! By far the best hairstylist I've ever had. I had long, blonde hair and went in for a partial highlight/cut and she was so nice and helpful through it all! We did a consult before hand and talked about how many inches she would cut, price and what I was looking for in a color. She even gave me a discount since it was my first time at the salon. She was so sweet, professional, and fun to spend 2 1/2 hours with in a hairstylist chair! Would definitely recommend her and this salon to anyone. Great location, great people! read more

I have not used this salon for haircut/color, only to buy products. I am giving them 2 stars because I experienced major attitude and inept ability to make a financial transaction. When the girl at the front (clearly new) double charged me another girl (the experienced one?) rolled her eyes and huffed over to help the new girl. I don't know who her attitude was towards, the new girl or me. Either way, leave the theatrics for non-business hours. Nonetheless...I would have let that slide. The two stars is because I'm extremely unnerved about my STILL PENDING transaction. It has been almost two weeks and my transaction and voided transaction are still 'pending' at my bank. To my bank it looks like I have paid them three times for well over $100 in product! I've called my bank, but they said it was Mercer who hadn't moved forward with collecting the funds. I've called the salon to see what the hold up is and they were clueless. Maybe their knowledge of Point of Sales devices isn't a good representation of the kind of salon services they provide, but I'd be leery to spend money with them. read more

My hair dresser recently closed down his studio in the heights and I've been extremely depressed about the entire situation. So trying to move on, I decided to get my haircut from a salon that looked decent and was fairly priced. I found Mercer on yelp and decided to give it a go. The prices were decent and the location was fairly close to my place. Upon arrival I was greeted and then asked to go to the back to put a robe on. I quickly changed and was directed to my chair and then along came my hairdresser. She was hesitant at first, but we quickly warmed up to each other and began having nice conversation. After chit chatting I got straight to the point with what I wanted. I told her I wanted seamless layers with bangs that would look good parted from the middle and side. I also told her I'm very low maintenance and that I don't typically style my hair. I usually just use sea salt spray and hair wax to get the effortless bed head look that I want. Well what ended up happening was her giving me pretty short hair (didn't mind that part) but the layers and bangs were not what I wanted. I wanted beach babe hair and I ended up coming out with soccer mom hair with a bunch of layers and short short bangs. I'm so upset but at the same time I think my standards are so high compared to my previous hairdresser. I used to go to Douglas Killinger in the Heights, but he no longer cuts hair. I will forever cry myself to sleep because he will no longer cut my locks. I very much hope I can keep searching for my forever hair dresser, but as of now I'm still looking for THE one. read more

The coupon was only good for a few weeks, a detail I overlooked, and when I called to work out a compromise on what I had already paid I was told no how no way. Vielka is a God sent! I'm so happy that I went to see her at the tres chic Mercer salon. I have VERY curly hair and its a little difficult to deal with living in a humid climate... About a year or so ago I was given a card by her then assistant telling me I needed to go see her because she was great with curls. Well... Now I'm kicking myself that it took me over a year to get to her but, I'm so glad I did! She really knows how curly hair works and how to cut it. Vielka took the time to meet with me for a consultation and gave me some great advice. I then booked an appointment for my first cut (which was a little nerve racking for me) but, the hair cut was perfection! She layered it perfectly and every curl fell into place. A couple weeks later I went in to shorten it up and I'm even happier with the second cut than I was with the first! Vielka really listens to her clients and pays attention to what they like and don't like. I'm not the best at explaining myself so, I did it through pictures and Vielka was very patient and happy to look through all of them with me. I am SO HAPPY with my hair cut that I can barely put it into words!!! Vielka has also cut my two boys hair and we love their hair cuts too. (And I love that she charges very reasonably for them!) Every hair on their head is precisely cut to perfection. And I love that I don't have to hang over her while she's cutting their hair "directing" like I've had to do in the past. I trust that she knows what we want and she has the skills to execute. I am NOT an easy person to please but, I am extremely pleased with Vielka, her skills and her talent. My experience was two years ago and I am still traumatized by it. I feel bad writing this review but don't want anyone else to go through what I did, The lady that did my hair ruined it and it cost A LOT of bucks to get it fixed! It was strange...all I did was go in cause roots had grown out..wanted the color the beautiful color my extensions were,,highlighted and low lights, It was very clear what I wanted, I got a hot mess! It was almost like was trying to mess it up on purpose cause had been a beautiful beautiful blond color with highlights and low lights, I emphasized no red tones,,,and she even put a blob of auburn over a patch of gray in the front because "us girls don;t want our gray to show!" KNOW I now why the lights are so low in there...cause you don't know how bad it is til you get home! I even asked an employee in private what they thought and they told me it was NOTHING like I asked for..I got charged 400.00: FOR RUINING MY PRETTY HAIR! It was a very surrealistic experience! I came armed with pictures of what I wanted and had the extensions....how can you go wrong? It was REALLY like it was done on purpose...I can think of no other reason someone could be a beautician for that long and mess up like that. ANYONE knows do not after coloring and highlights and low lights do other coloring methods, I wanted to turn a complaint into the Better Business Bureau but did not want to harm someone's livelihood. Been going there on and off for about 3 years finally found someone who could cut my hair and my husbands hair! Brenda is no longer there and they have some new people as usual! Not sure what the deal is with this place but has a very high turnover rate. No one ever last! I wish I knew where brenda went so I could follow her. read more
