A pretty casual walk up moonshine tasting place. While walking from one bar to the next, we decided to stop in here really quick before dinner. It was really dark in here for some reason, but we walked up to the counter and tried 5 different moonshines that they had to offer. This place is really cool and nestled in the less busy part of the strip in Gatlinburg. We were able to go right in and avoid some of the lines that plague other attractions. They offer $5 moonshine tastings and give you a $5 credit toward merchandise. Moonshine is very heavy in the moonshine flavor so this place is better for those who don't want to heavily flavored moonshines. We loved our bartender and the merchandise was neat. We've spotted this place the last couple times we've been to Gatlinburg, but so rarely make it all the way down to the far end of the strip (as you drive in from Pigeon Forge), that we hadn't taken the time to walk all the way down there yet. MAN, HAVE WE BEEN MISSING OUT. Let me say this, as we are Gatlinburg fiends and typically go 2-3 times a year. We have thoroughly done the area's wine trail and hit ALL the local moonshine and distillery spots. Hear me now: DOC COLLIER's is the absolute BEST quality and tasting moonshine you can get in the area. Period. All the rest tastes like bad syrup-y swill in comparison. Seriously, they have Absolutely the best moonshine and (except for their banana), all their flavorings come from 100% natural fruit/flavors/additives. Legit top quality shine found here compared to the syrupy swill found at every other spot along the Gburg strip. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. read more

Full disclosure: I was drunk by the end of my tasting experience. Seriously, the best tasting in all of Gatlinburg. Come here. They have SO many delicious flavors and are extremely giving with them. So many of these tastings throughout the area this was one of the best we tried. For $5 dollars u get to try a bunch of different moonshines don't recall how many? The girls set up the tasting on the bar & them they start pouring, nice filled little cups they were nice & friendly. Some of the ones we tried, I liked the Banana, Blueberry, Blackberry .. the 128 proof was tasty as well. Root beer , Peanut butter , Chocolate & coffee not some of my best not a fan of peanut butter , chocolate or coffee. The craziest one was the "weed" one which had no weed in it but certainly smelled & tasted like it this was a bit harsh tasting. Couple others that I don't recall but overall it was a nice selection to try. Small location, you have a lot of the moonshines up for sale, we got the sampler box as well as the hot sauce. There is no dearth of moonshine in Tennessee let alone Gatlinburg and Doc Collier is a good addition to the larger ones such as Ole Smoky and Sugarlands. They didn't have any cream moonshines when we went, but we tried a bunch and our favorites were twisted cherry, blackberry, peach, and Smoky mountain sunrise. The tasting room was cozy overall and the staff were friendly and kind. This is a fun distillery and we would stop by again for sure! read more

One of my favorite moonshine places in Tennessee hands down. Smaller than it's competitor, Ole Smokey, Doc Colliers is a reason to stop and do a tasting on the strip in Gatlinburg, TN. They have a new set up for taste testing. A person at a kiosk greets you and processes your ID and payment for the tasting ($5). After you get wristbanded, head over the the bar and belly up for a ride. They line up the shine and tell you how it was made. The colorful bar makes you feel like you are in a saloon. The colorful stickers behind the bar show a display of Tennessee pride. Favs? The Naner is a banana taffy delight in a shine jar. The Blackberry is my fave and you cannot pass up the Root Beer. After you find what you like, head over to the shop side and pick out some drink ware and gifts. The thing I like more is the fact you can select a large or small jar. AND they have gift packs with a few small shine jars in a pack. Can't beat that. It's worth a stop on the strip if you are curious or a shine lover! GO! This is at the north end of the main strip, kind of found it by accident, but so glad we did. They don't do the advertising the others do , but the quality of the moonshine and the employees are just as good or better.They close a bit earlier than the others and we walked in just in time for last tasting. The energy and enthusiasm was like it was the first of the evening . Pretty good low % content moonshines. Flavors like Naner, blackberry, green apple and also a high content ( 125 proof) was really smooth but oh, a nice burn! We stopped in to try the moonshine slushees and oh my goodness were they good! Truly a great way to enjoy an alcoholic beverage on a hot day. Local. They make their moonshine right there, in the building. It was nice to walk in , get great service, and advice. The $5 cost covers several shots, or " tastes" of the moonshine. But they give you a $5 coupon if you buy something. The bartenders start out with the 125 proof, then go right into the chasers that are fruity and popular. I ended up getting the firecracker... a hot cinnamon blast at 65 proof. They also give a discount for military, teachers, firefighters, police and others. Nice! read more

Another 2 year old "moonshine" distillery in Gatlinburg. Flavors are all about the same. Apple pie, cinnamon, etc. Energetic young servers like everywhere lead you through the tasting. Unlike other places they serve their product cold, which is a good way to mask flavor, bad and good. One thing I liked abut Doc Collier is that they had 375ml bottles in addition to the 750s, so you could buy more flavors. I actually got an 8 mini bottle variety pack. Don't know the size but maybe half the 375 size. Make sure you bring your coupon for a free bottle of water. It helps with the tasting. And bring your ID. If you've been to Gatlinburg you know that there is a distillery on every corner. OK, a slight exaggeration, but there are a lot of places to drink booze, and they all want your business. It seems like most people flock to Sugarlands or Ole Smoky, which is fine, but kind of unimaginative, don't you think? So, do yourself a flavor (get it?) and buck the trend by going to Doc Collier. We recently had the pleasure of trying it out, and not only was it decidedly less crowded than those other guys, the moonshine is actually really good. This is something I didn't think was actually possible, but there you are. As they say, when in Tennessee... The best part about the tasting (of 13!! moonshines) however, is the staff. Our tasting hostess, Anna, was fantastic. They have these tiny little shot glasses (they have to be tiny, you're tasting 13 moonshines, people) that she somehow managed to fill precisely to the rim and not a drop over, each and every time she poured. If that's not talent, I don't know what is. It could have been the moonshine talking, but I was seriously impressed. After the tasting, we wound up buying two bottles of moonshine to take home with us - the Dew Drop and the Apple Pie. So if you're coming here with the explicit intent to try moonshine, then by all means, head down the strip and hit up every distillery you find. Go crazy with your bad self and taste the ones you can get at your local liquor store. BUT if you want to try something different, and you want to have a good time doing it, go a bit further down the road and hit up Doc Collier. Doc Collier will be the only shine distillery to receive five stars in that area. It's amazing what Tennessee has done with the "Moonshine" industry in such a short time. Having stills legally making moonshine really shouldn't be a thing. Call it something else and keep moonshine in the woods. I'll save the rants for other moonshine distilleries that really irked me. For this review... all positivity. If there's one brand that deserves commercial success in the moonshine world, it's this one. I'm not sure how old the other moonshine spots are but this one is two years old. Entering Doc Collier... it's obvious that Doc Collier is grounded in what they're trying to do. They remind me more of a craft beer or bourbon distillery than someone making moonshine. The flavors are abundant. I'm glad that my companion took a photo of the offerings else I would've forgot everything we tried. The normal flavors are there... peach, apple, blackberry, cinnamon, (insert other berry flavors here), and numerous seasonal flavors. All of the flavors are drinkable. Our bartender was amazing. No frills. No arrogant "we're better than the others" comments. Professionalism. If I have to choose... my favorite flavors: -- Heritage Shine(typical moonshine flavor, but it's proofed down to 80! Put out a 110, 120, or anything above 100!) -- Smokey Mountain Sunrise(Pineapple, Orange, Cranberry) - Dear Pineapple, I love you. Sincerely, Brad -- Banana(my party suggested putting strawberries into the Banana flavor to soak. One guy thought it was a good idea. The other? He told us that he doesn't have time to eat soaked strawberries. Just try it. You'll thank us for it.) Side Note: -- Go ahead and put out a higher proof option. Be one of the first to do it. You could become instant pioneers. -- I won't comment on price extensively. While their flavors and some of the other distilleries have great flavors... they're charging THAT for proofed down "moonshine" I hate to comment on society and intelligence... but seriously?! -- Doc Collier... keep doing what you're doing and keep it classy. Ok, this place is a hidden gem in Gatlinburg that does not get the recognition it deserves! Both associates working were super awesome( Anthony and Andrew)! We have been coming to Gatlinburg for years and I can honestly say we over looked this place if we walked down to where it was. Thankfully this year, we stayed at the Baymont so we walked by it on our way in to town. This moonshine was probably the smoothest and had the best flavor. Bloody Mary mix was also great! When you first walk in it was a little confusing. There was a sign that said check-in, but there were only 3 employees all in the middle of tastings. We walked around and looked at the merchandise until we noticed one of the employees finished with a tasting. A $5 tasting gets you a small shot (maybe 1/2 shot?) of about 15 different types of moonshine. Well worth the money. At the end of the tasting you get $5 off coupon for merchandise. This is the new kid on the block and also my favorite of the moonshiners. It's a little more out of the way, past the aquarium on the strip across from Cooters and next to the (Now relocated) Hard Rock Cafe. But it is every bit of the walk down to it! I'll admit theres a few samples I'll refuse at the big ones in the middle of the strip, especially if i don't have something to drink after them. There is absolutely no need here. They don't have a ton of different ones (yet) but they have 3 solid ones! This is the smoothest moonshine I have ever come across. To be fair I normally (and I'm sure most people) hit these places up for the free samples, and occasionally i'll buy some. I didn't even hesitate to get a bottle to bring home from these guys. And the bonus? They offer different sizes! So you can get as little or as much as you'd like! The staff was truly the best people I've ever encountered inthe area. They were genuine were interested in having conversations with us instead of just pitching their product. So seriously, travel down the strip a little more and check these guys out! We came in on a whim to do the moonshine tasting, and Andrew was such a great host (not to mention, the moonshine was absolutely the best we've had to date) that we ended up leaving with three bottles. Andrew was witty and professional, and he basically made us feel like family while explaining each flavor to a T. Truly one of the best places we visited during our time in Gatlinburg, specifically because of Andrew. The store iN Sevierville, TN is longer Doc Collier's. They sold to new owners and many of the old recipes are no longer available. This is not to say the new owners should not be patronized, we bought 7 bottles of moon and all were very good. Recommend the root beer float flavor. Wish we had purchased more. You start out with the 128 proof which was much smoother than Ole Smokey's blue flame in my opinion. You get to chase it with 11 different fun flavors. Dew Drop, Naner, and Rootbeer Float is what I came home with. They also had 2 slushies to try. I ended up ordering a blackberry slushy... it was so good! My favorite of the moonshine distilleries in Gatlinburg. "I would tell you a moonshine joke, but it's corny..." Anytime you go into one of these type places for tastings, it's gonna be just like anywhere else - it depends on who you get to "entertain" you with their routine. We had a young lady Friday night at another place who wasn't bad - you could just tell she didn't want to be there, but it was fairly crowded (though not as crowded as I have seen it). OK, went to Doc's on Sunday afternoon to take communion...fruit of the stalk, right? We had the bread tasting the olive oils at All Sauced up - progressive Lord's Supper.. To begin with the people at the bar tasting were very rude - no wait - it was just the four of us, but we hadn't eaten yet. I'm kidding. There were about 6 total people tasting and the place was dead. The young man doing the tasting - although I am sure he has used these same jokes a thousand times - made sure it didn't feel that way. It's kind of like riding the aerial tram to Ober Gatlinburg - if you ride it enough you can quote the jokes the attendant uses verbatim - "Why are all the people in the other tram pointing at our cables and yelling?" - you get the gist. The title of this review is attributed to our booze host. I did learn a lot more about "craft" moonshine. Unlike some of the other distilleries, craft moonshine is limited in the amount that can be made in a certain period and it has to be made onsite - not somewhere else and trucked in. This, too allows a lot more control of the process and distilling. Doc's was smoother by far - even the high alcohol content ones. While it still had that "What have I done?" factor, it didn't burn all the way down. We let our son-in-law do the top shelf tasting and we got to witness how to pour and "palm" the brandy. It was amazing how it transforms simply because of exposure and body heat. Sadly you are not allowed to taste it at this stage. I think some of the negative reviews are due to the fact that you can't get a free buzz on just 6 flavors whereas at some of the other larger places you can bar-hop like a 21 year old on their birthday. I have seen many, many patrons of these places do the dougie in and around these businesses. One couple was amazingly close to falling out into traffic. Gatlinburg now has about 5 or 6 of these establishments, each with multiple tasting stations - even multiple locations - even encouraging patrons to make sure to try the other place down the road. Not my favorite moonshine in the area, but it's worth your time to visit. For $5 we got to try a bunch (I lost count) of different flavors they make. It's nice that they make them all right there in the store. The Naner moonshine took me by surprise, I liked it a lot more than I anticipated. She explained that all of their moonshine is made in-house and can't be purchased anywhere else. And it's all made with real fruit. We ran through about a dozen different kinds of moonshine and most of them were pretty darn tasty. Even the non-flavored ones. The tastings are a lot of fun and you get to try things that you wouldn't normally try...from 'nana to blackberry to pecan pie. They now have to charge $5 for each tasting (Gatlinburg law), but they give you a $5 coupon in return to use on your purchase.
