I would give the food itself 4 stars, but I'm adding an extra star for the spectacular service we received from our waiter. I can't recall his name, but he was a younger Hispanic gentleman with tattoos, and he was an absolute pleasure--what a cool dude. The ambiance is fantastic: a dimly lit, tavern-style atmosphere tucked away among the Prescott pines. They were gracious enough to accommodate our party of six even though we arrived only about a half hour before closing, which we really appreciated. The food was delicious--the meat was cooked perfectly to the rarity I requested, with great flavor and solid sides. That said, nothing quite blew me away this visit. I will say they have a very impressive and diverse menu, so I'm looking forward to coming back and exploring some of their other offerings. We were a little worried the place would be noisy but the levels were fine. No loud TVs or noisy conversations we had to shout over. We ordered the filet mignon and split it between the two of us. There wasn't an extra steak knife but I didn't need it as it was so tender I could cut it just fine with the regular knife. It was perfectly seasoned. Cierra was an excellent server. I was hoping he'd call and say "Sorry man that one got away from us, you've been here 15 times and keep supporting us, and we appreciate you taking the time to let us know how we might do better". He's acting that I lied about my wait times. He stated it was impossible for me to go to my vehicle so upset that they ruined my birthday evening that I'd leave a yelp review in the parking lot. He stated that I was aggressive and rude with his staff. Another lie. If that's true. If we were upset that we didn't get free drinks and were aggressive with the staff why did we leave a 25%+ tip? Maybe because we know that it wasn't the servers fault that the restaurant was extremely slow and the owner wasn't paying attention to the front of house!!!! And maybe we don't write these reviews just to complain, we write them hoping the management responds to honest feedback and uses it to improve their service! If you don't believe our order was really two hours you can check the receipt times on our $207 bill. Lastly, read his response. He won't accept anything stated as truth. PLATES ARRIVED AT 8:45, well 2 of the 3 anyway... Waiter was very nice!! But not organized. We waited for 30-45 mins between interactions. Empty water glasses. Empty cocktail glasses. Every time! I believe this is a management and training issue because the young man was trying to do well. But we were his only table on that side of the restaurant... No one gave us the expectation that service would be 2+ hours. When things dragged on we were told it was coming and be patient. 3 times I got up to leave but was told it was on its way...No bread offered. At a steakhouse. No salads brought to table. Restaurants serve bread and appetizer sized salads when they are slow because it costs little and keeps hungry customers happy. The decision not to do this is generally to cut costs and the false impression it will turn tables slower. Why does the Olive Garden and Texas Roadhouse do this? Because they'd rather you not realize service is slow and think you're getting a bargain than wait hungry, get madder by the second, wondering when you might get to eat and to deprioritize an otherwise good restaurant because the kitchen is always backed up. Again, a management decision. Just like not informing your guests they will wait 2+ hours before seeing a crumb. I got up to wander around and look for staff. When I saw them they all looked happy and were often having pow-wows with the owner. It was a terrible experience. No apologies from management. THEY DIDNT CARE. When I did get to speak with a manager (20 minutes after asking) it was excuses not apologies. She told me it was my opinion that service was slow. No lady. It is an attempt at honest feedback. We arent offering our time to share our opinions because we are jerks. We offer our feedback because we hope you would learn from it, make some decisions to improve because we want you to succeed. Why managers and owners don't see it like this I'll never understand. I truly want this restaurant to succeed because they are an independent shop. Their food is better than most. But results are at the whim of the staff. When you tell a full table that waited 2+ hours for their food that the parking lot is full and people will keep coming anyway, you're telling them they aren't important and you'll make money regardless. Lastly to anyone still reading. The staff here have it better than any other place in town. All your customers are wonderful, understanding people. I talk to them. They are patient and bend over for you when you have a hiccup. They don't yell, cuss, or get loud when you let them down. They are big tippers! Management should leverage their best asset, their customers, and demand better from their staff, who might just need more management out of the owners. We have visited this place a few times now and enjoy each time we are there. We typically like to sit at the bar and enjoy the staff chit-chat. Food is amazing, we have some favorites but so far each dish we have tried with the wife has been excellent. Make sure to give Crème brûlée a try, have yet to be disappointed with this desert. Plenty of room at this establishment with many different areas to choose from to enjoy your time out. I went to dinner at Badgers Den last night and after a very very long wait the meal was served and it was delicious. However, it was clear the restaurant was understaffed last night. The server advised there was a party in the back which was causing a delay in service Due to the extremely long delay in food service we were provided three bowls of soup while we waited. The young man who served us was very kind and polite. I could look beyond the long delay and move on with my life and probably come back. However, what I do not appreciate is the response from the owner regarding a guests review. The owner chose to deflect and lie about my friend's treatment to the staff. Let me me be very clear my friend was not rude, disrespectful or disruptive in any manner. He simply provided professional and timely feedback. That feedback included positive and constructive comments. The owner instead made the decision to call him a liar. This is unacceptable behavior and the owner should be embarrassed for this behavior. Clearly the owner needs thicker skin. We asked to give feedback to the manager she stood there and listened to us and then dismissed us. She even made a comment on how backed up the kitchen was that night. Look, I really loved my dish. It was amazing. However, if as the owner you choose to attack my friend and make up your version of history I will never be back. We drove up to Prescott, Arizona yesterday for the first time so I wasn't familiar with the area. I opened Yelp to see what looked good for lunch. The Badger's Den caught my eye because of its high rating and cool name. I also read reviews on the brisket being excellent. A brisket sandwich sounded really good so we headed over at 3 PM. I'm thankful for Yelp because I would never have noticed this spot without it. It's easy to drive by because there isn't really a large sign out front. It's a nondescript red painted rectangular building. I was speaking to one of the waitresses about the history of the restaurant and she said that the current owner used to own a food truck, The Hungry Badger, and then became head chef here. When the owners needed to sell, he bought the place and continues to cook here. I loved the ambience and energy when we walked in. It did sort of feel like a badger's den with rich leather and dark browns and greens, and a large fireplace with a roaring fire that made it feel intimate, cozy, and elegant all at once. This is a casual dining spot so no need to dress up to come here. When we came in, we were asked if we had reservations and said no. We were seated immediately. Our server, Mariah, was just the greatest. She gave over the top service and friendliness from beginning to end. I asked for cherry Coke and she said she could make me one with grenadine and cherries from the bar. When I asked for a top off of Coca-Cola, she brought me a whole can and a glass of ice so that I could refill as I desired. As you can see on the bill, we were only charged for our two beverages. A bus boy made rounds and as our plates finished, he immediately cleared them. We ordered: - Clam Chowder Bowl (House-made) - Hubs ordered this as a starter and I tasted a bite. You can tell it is made from scratch. It is very good. You can also get the soup in a bread bowl, which is very tempting. - Brisket Sandwich - Smoked beef brisket, Swiss cheese, onion straws and pickles on a toasted bun. You can't get any better than this! I stuffed myself on this trip even though I had a long ride home because I couldn't stop eating this delicious sandwich. The brisket was cooked perfectly. My sandwich had brisket that was tender and flavorful and meaty with hardly any of the fat and gristle. I didn't need any barbecue sauce, but I wanted to try some anyway. The Swiss cheese, pickles and lightly toasted brioche bun were perfect with the brisket. The fries were also amazing so I had to be careful not to fill up on those. Luckily, hubs helped out. - Trio: 1/3 Rack, Brisket, Grilled Andouille Sausage. This comes with two sides and hubs ordered coleslaw and mac & cheese. The coleslaw is vinegar based with a lemon poppyseed dressing and is on the sweet side. The mac & cheese looked amazing. Aged Gouda is used and this is more of a thinner version rather than an ultra thick version of mac & cheese. Hubs also was amazed by the brisket. It was his favorite and he ate all of it first. The sausage was also good. That mustard barbecue sauce goes perfectly with the sausage. Hubs was full so he couldn't really eat the ribs. There's a lot of meat on this plate. They provide you with a bowl with some wet wipes and napkins for your rib bones. - Banana Pudding Pie to go - I really wanted to try a dessert here just because it's fun to share a dessert while trying out a new place but we were so full that we couldn't. Mariah, our server mentioned she could pack one to go. Sold! We took it to go and she was so sweet. She even packed utensils for us in case we got hungry on the journey home. There's a men's and women's restroom for customers. I noticed the patio as I was exiting the restroom and went to check it out because it looked so inviting with the open porch and screened windows letting in the perfect 60°F breeze. Steps led from the patio to below, and the server explained that they were building a little area out there that will have a bar and live music and places to sit. It is almost finished. There won't be food service, but there will be a bar with drinks and snacks. It's set against the pine trees and the mountain landscaping, giving a very peaceful and green view. In all, we had such a wonderful surprise lunch in Prescott for the few hours that we were up there. I look forward to returning and will stop by the Badger's Den. read more
