It's close to the Theater District, so it's a great spot to grab dinner before or after a show. There's usually a nice crowd, and you might even bump into an actor or celebrity. The tuna tartare was bright and refreshing, the chopped salad was colorful and full of texture, the beignet was perfectly , the fish entrée was moist with a rich, buttery sauce, the burger was juicy with excellent fries, and the chocolate layer cake was the perfect finish. Even the cocktail was balanced, refreshing, and beautifully presented. Unfortunately, the service didn't quite match the quality of the cuisine. Our waitress seemed to be in a hurry from the moment she approached the table. When we asked questions about the menu, she frequently had to look down at her notes and wasn't able to confidently explain the dishes or make recommendations. Rather than creating a welcoming dining experience, she mainly functioned as an order taker. In contrast, the bussers and food runners were exceptional. They were attentive throughout the meal, constantly refilling our water glasses, clearing plates promptly, and checking in at the right moments. Their friendliness and professionalism made a noticeable difference. I also noticed two gentlemen, including an Asian gentleman, walking through the dining room, interacting with the staff and checking in with them throughout the service. If they were managers or supervisors, I would have appreciated seeing a bit more engagement with guests--simply stopping by tables to ask how everything was going would have elevated the overall hospitality and helped identify opportunities to improve the service experience. Smh. * It's currently single digits in NYC, feels like 0°, and this night was the coldest of the week. People (the same people) constantly coming in and out made no sense. The place is small, so every time the door opened, we felt it. * There's a strict 90-minute dining limit, which makes you constantly watch the clock. With these prices, it doesn't make sense. The steak was very flavorful. Very tender, seasoned perfectly. Had that nice char grilled flavor. Purée was rich and yummy. Brussel sprouts were a bit too salty for me but L loved them. The drinks were also very good. Not too strong but very tasty. Loved the stronger coffee cocktail, not the dulce de leche one. That was too sweet for me. Their entire staff was friendly and very efficient. We returned a week later and had HH at the taqueria. We ordered the $10 margaritas...the frozen ones are so good and strong too. We ordered one of each taco at $5 each. These tacos are filled with meat or veggies. I was so stuffed from just having a taste of each taco. Tasty but lots of flavor, too much for me. But ... even though we were full... we ordered the 22oz Picanha and a side of heirloom potatoes. As full as I was, I couldn't stop eating the potatoes. Just enough salt, so crispy. Delicious.. Anyway, I went to this outstanding new Latin steakhouse within the Kimpton Era Midtown, a hotel open since March this year, with a bunch of others last night. The spot consists of two places, Bar Amasa, a fancier taqueria and small bites/tapas spot, which has a different Yelp page, and this downstairs place. The space is dark with a minimalist design and some lamps that can be adjusted between three brightness settings. Our server, who was from Ecuador, was very friendly and helpful, along with the rest of the staff. Due to its location being near Rockefeller, I would classify this as a low-key, less sceney version of Cuerno, which is much larger and has a much bigger menu with more emphasis on Mexican food. This spot has a mix of Latin influences, though I would say it's primarily Peruvian and Mexican. By comparison, the food here that I tried was a lot better, though they are lacking some of the showstoppers/shared steaks you can find at the other place. To drink, you can see my comment regarding the Margarita, with it being perfectly made. Another person had a Mezcalita with their house mezcal for $22, with the base being $17, and a bunch of the others liked the $20 Hibiscus Margarita. My appetizer was the Tuna Tiradito for $23, with mango, orange, and Peruvian salsa macha. This consisted of five pieces of raw tuna swimming in a thick yellow sauce with some smoky and spicy salsa macha on each piece. The tuna was great quality, while the sauce had a sour and sweet flavor with plenty of heat. This was delicious. Another person had the same thing, while another loved the $23 Colossal Shrimp Aguachile. My main was the outstanding 8 oz Arrachera for $52, a center cut outside skirt with citrus herb chili marinade, charred scallion curdito, and chimichurri. I ordered medium rare, and the steak was cooked perfectly, being tender, with only one small piece being a tad too chewy. The meat had a mild citrus note, and the scallions added a bit of sourness and an extra texture when needed. If I had a minor complaint, the chimichurri was a bit lightly flavored without enough garlic or aromatics in general, and I think it would work better as a side sauce to dip the steak into. Outside of the chimichurri, this was delicious and one of the better steaks in recent memory. The only side dish ordered was the $14 Esquites, with corn, chili, cotija, and cilantro. I tried a bit, and in terms of fancier places, this was a very tasty and refined version. Compared to Cuerno, the esquites weren't too soupy or salty from the cheese. There was also a bit of spice, but it wasn't overpowering. The portion was pretty decent as well, so overall, I would recommend it. Two of the others had the other Latin American cuts on the menu, and we each had a bite of each other's steak. My preference of the two was easily the $54 Churrasco, with the meat being a bit less tender than mine, but much more beefy. My least favorite of the bunch was the $48 Picanha, as it was both less tender than my steak with a couple of pieces of fat, and less meaty than theirs. Outside of this, two had the $64 Surf & Turf, which came with three of the massive shrimp from the appetizer, so it was well worth the price. Judging from the menu being listed as a bavette cut, they use the same churrasco. Another person loved the salmon. For dessert, I tried a tiny bit of the Tres Leches someone else ordered. The cake came with a strawberry compote, which also had a few other berries mixed in. The cake was different, being less sweet than some other places, nor was it as soft. It was tasty, but different. In terms of fancier Spanish spots, I slightly preferred the version from either Limusina or Buena Vista. Overall, outside of the issue with my drink, I had a wonderful meal here. The appetizer was delicious, the steak was cooked perfectly, and the service was friendly while being refined.
