Six links; medium chili and a Peach Nehi. Tradition.

This dingy looking building has been here for what seems like forever. Thank goodness. I've been a semi-regular for about 20 years or so. The only things that have changed are the counters/benches (everything's level now) and the ownership. The kind service and addicting East Texas Hot Links are as good as ever. So too is the fellowship with fellow patrons ~ black, white, old and not so old. When you're sitting down at Doc's, you suddenly realize that you all share a common bond. It's special indeed and rare. The links are a specialty item with a cloudy history. There is a much larger place up the road a spell. Though the recipes are similar, Doc's Hot Links get there for the old school cash. You won't find sides or burgers here (they offer barbecue sauce for folks who can't handle the classic hot sauce). You can get white bread or crackers. Order a sandwich if you desire, or eat it the classic way with saltines. Either way, you'll leave here satisfied.

My grandpa, me, and my son all enjoying some Doc's!

And then there was a picture of a skull lol. It's very spacious inside. Parking is like downtown parking, we parked in the street. My husband's parallel parking skills could've been better. He's too used to his back up camera. You wait in line and order. The taste of everything was solid. It's fresh. The Cajun dog is made with alligator and pork meat. Texture was good. It's messy so eat it with the fork and knife they gave you, which is my mistake. Everything just tastes better when you eat a hot dog without utensils. The paddie melt is also good as well. The rosemary garlic fries had good flavor and same with the onion rings. They happened to just bring us out the loaded onion rings so we were pleasantly surprised. Service is friendly. Very nice place. The portions were actually loaded because normally I wouldn't think I'd be full from the food but it was really filling. I give it a four out of five because it didn't blow me away. But very solid. Definitely give it a try!

Not only was the customer service great, the fries are seasoned perfectly, it was nonstop my morning munching to the bottom of the bag. The restaurant was busy with families enjoying dinner, and the back room was completely booked for what looked like a birthday party. It's the kind of place that immediately feels like a community staple. The menu is full of American classics, and I went with the spicy cheeseburger. Overall, it was really good. My only minor complaint was that the jalapeños were sliced a little thick, so they kept slipping out of the burger. One thing I loved was the old-school condiment bar where you can customize your burger just the way you like it. After dinner, I couldn't pass up the bakery case. The cookies, cakes, and pies all looked fantastic. The employee recommended the Heathen Cookie, so I grabbed one along with a lemon icebox cookie to enjoy later. I always appreciate finding local restaurants that are clearly supported by the community, and this is one of those places. If you find yourself in Longview, The Butcher Shop & Bakery is well worth a visit for both the food and the hometown atmosphere.

We stopped in on Thursday around 5:30 p.m. hoping to grab some salted caramel cookies, but they were sold out. So my husband ordered three Heath cookies and three white chocolate macadamia nut cookies instead. When the employee handed us our order, there was only one white chocolate macadamia nut cookie. My husband politely let her know that he had ordered three. Instead of simply saying, "Oops, let me fix that," she immediately argued that he had only asked for one. When he asked for the other two cookies, she gave us an obvious attitude. I honestly don't understand why. It's not like we were asking for free cookies--we paid for the other two. Maybe she was annoyed that she had to ring them up separately, but regardless, that isn't how customers should be treated. We stayed polite the entire time. We didn't raise our voices or give her any attitude back. It was disappointing to be treated that way over such a simple mistake. Experiences like this leave a bad impression, and my husband said that was the last time he'll shop at this location. The really disappointing part is that they make some damn good cookies. It's a shame that great products are being overshadowed by poor customer service.
