It has been some time since Mr D and I have set out on a Wednesday to test another St Louis area barbecue joint. This time we headed across the river to Edwardsville to try Doc's. We had started to do this once before and got sidetracked. I'm glad we finally made the trip. Doc's is a thriving newish place in a strip mall. It was fairly busy at lunch time and it seems that they are doing well. Mr D had a 4 bone rib plate and I ordered a pulled pork plate with a half rack of ribs to go. If I drive this far I have to test at least two of the meat offerings. Starting with the pulled pork, I was pleased. I am often critical of St Louis area pulled pork, but occasionally I find some that I like. This was truly pulled and then dressed very lightly with a thin sauce that added some sweetness. It was fresh, moist and well smoked. I ate it plain, avoiding bread, but it would certainly make a very good sandwich. I also liked that while dressed with a sauce, it was not over applied. Four stars for this. I had their creamy cole slaw and green beans on the side. Slaw was fine if not remarkable and the beans were seasoned with smoked meat and well-cooked onion. This was a decent job on two mundane sides. Mr D complimented the ribs while I have a mixed review. The key thing is that they were well cooked and well smoked, so hats off for that. When I say, well cooked, they came clean off the bone but were not fall-off-the bone mush. Also, although I again forgot to ask for them to be served without sauce, fortunately that is the way they serve them, un-sauced. With all that said, they have done 95% of the hard work very well. It's just that they had little if any rub and that means no salt. None. So what would have been 4-1/2 to five star ribs become 2-1/2 - three star. I don't eat sauce on ribs. These required it. I'm not saying salt them heavily. They just need some. This was well prepared but unseasoned meat. A little too purist for me. read more

What a great meal. We had pulled pork and ribs. Sides were baked beans and Mac n cheese. All yummy. They had 3 or 4 BBQ sauces tableside.

Great food and service! When a certain item wasn't available, they promptly contacted us and offered us good alternatives.

OH. MY. GOODNESS!!! The brisket is AWESOME! Tender and juicy, yet not horribly fatty like some places. Just PERFECT. And they're not stingy with the serving size! Speaking of serving size, I ordered the cucumber salad to go with my brisket sandwich, which was also fantastic. Once again, not stingy! They used grape or cherry tomatoes in it, so they actually had tomato flavor. A big plus in my book. They had 4 sauces, but I was only able to try the Hot & Spicy and the Carolina Mustard, both of which were sooooo good. Can't say enough wonderful things about this place. MUST go back! read more

The very thick pork steak melted in your mouth, but was lacking real flavor. 50% meat 50% fat, which is always a gamble with pork steak. First trip to Doc's today. We rather enjoyed it. The food was great! Menu is written on chalkboards on wall behind counter where you order your food. We had 2 smoked chicken sandwiches and for our side we both got the Corn casserole and one mac and cheese. The sandwiches came naked but there were 4 varieties of sauce on the table if you want to add. The Corn casserole was slightly dry but good nonetheless. The pulled chicken was smoked just right and really tender. The mac and cheese was also good. Now, about the service - it was lacking. When our drinks were brought they were both wrong. So they had to bring the right ones. Before we left we were asked if we would like drinks to go and said yes (we were even ready to pay if needed). Since we were stuffed, and their desserts sounded good, we got 2 pieces of Bourbon Bacon cheesecake to go. It took a few minutes for the desserts to come, and we left. ... without our to go drinks because the server never returned. Later that evening we dug into the cheesecake - it was the bomb! Went to lunch at Doc's Smokehouse after a movie. It was pretty good. I got the pork entree with potato salad and beans. The pork was tasty and tender. I wish I would have gotten a sandwich though. But that's my fault. They did provide a small dinner roll with the entree. I made a sandwich out of it with the sweet bbq sauce. Delicious! I wish I would have had 2 more rolls. The potato salad tasted almost like my families' recipe. Delicious! The beans I was not a fan of. I didn't like the texture of the sauce. I felt like the sauce was too gummy and just couldn't get passed it. My husband ordered the piglet burger with mac n cheese and a side of seasoned fries. He loved it. No complaints. You like awesome competition style BBQ...well this is it! As a former competitor I am very picky about my BBQ. I always seem to like mine better but I am biased...and so is my family but...Doc's Smokehouse is by far and away the best of any BBQ joint I have tried. Everything on the menu, top to bottom, is excellent. If you enjoy side dishes well, they have very well thought out dishes along with desserts that are take homes for me 'cause I am full of the awesome Q. Pork, brisket, and the pork steak is the best I ever had. If burgers are your thing you will have a surprise waiting for you. Wear you expandable pants...and have both hands ready!! We were looking for somewhere to take the in-laws for an early dinner. I found docs on Yelp and sooo glad I did! My husband and father in law got pork steaks. Which were super tasty and tasted like ribs. A great price for a lot of meat! My mother in law got a rack of ribs to share and pulled pork. Both were excellent, although the pulled pork needed a little extra flavor but the sauce took care of that. The ribs were some of the best I have had. I got the brisket. I heard about this place when my daughter requested to go here for dinner. So happy she did! I had the Doc's Signature sandwich that was slow smoked sliced brisket, provolone cheese, and grilled onion served on an artisan bun. The brisket fell apart, it was so tender. This BBQ house has it down. The meat, the sides, the sauces were all terrific. I had burnt ends that had a lovely bark and tender melting interior, tossed in Doc's competition winning sweet and smoky sauce. The corn casserole was light and almost fluffy with a yummy corny flavor. The beans had big chunks of bacon and were so good. A little sweet for me but still very good. The portions are big so it's a good value for the money. The numerous trophies decorating the restaurant are a tribute to Doc's BBQ mastery. Highly recommended. read more

One of the best places to get BBQ for sure! There is a reason why you better get your orders in early in the day before dinner because the good stuff(burnt ends, ribs, etc) always sells out fast! The service here was impeccable . The young people in charge were super attentive, polite and checking on us continuously. We had the burnt ends dinner with two sides. The meat was super tender and seasoned well. The sides were just ok , the mac and cheese was passable but the potato salad , cole slaw and baked beans were ho hum. I had the brisket sandwich - very nicely smoked brisket. Tender- easily melts in your mouth. I like the staff - very friendly- very attentive to my needs - important in these COVID times. I thought the barbecue sauce was ok - it was good but not "wow". At barbecue joints, I love a variety of sauces. To Doc's credit, the meat stands on its own. Lots of fries - hot. This bbq joint deserves every one of these stars. I dream about their burnt ends. So delicious, but order early as they sell out quickly. We also enjoy their corn dish. My son lovingly calls it "corn stuff." All of their sauces are on point and the perfect consistency. They are doing in-person dining, but we frequently do carry out. We've never been disappointed with any of the food we've ordered, but don't miss out on those burnt ends. They're even good left over. read more

Been here two times, great food every time, prices are good too. Only one complaint, it's not huge and can be fixed. When needing a refill it's almost impossible to get one without walking up and asking for one yourself. Both times the workers didn't pay any attention to check for refills delivering the food. This place is a great place to eat. I hadn't been there until a couple of months ago and I've been several times now. I keep trying new things and I heard that they're looking to expand! They need it! Each time I've been, the service has been pleasant and reasonably fast. I have had the burnt ends, brisket, ribs, pulled pork and chicken. Side wise, the french fries, green beans and of course the mac and cheese! The nachos are by far my favorite thing to get there and you can get a half order! I haven't been able to try too many of the award winning deserts, but I did try the caramel pie and was blown away! I would like try the bread pudding! Great experience and great people! First impressions are everything. Ordered a simple turkey sandwich at 1:19pm. Sat and waited. Still sitting here... growing older by the minute. Blood sugar dropping. Way too long for a meal that you order from the counter... at this point 1:45pm and I'm it even interested in the food. Outside of the counter guy, no one to ask where is the order?????? Stuck, stranded, paid for a meal sometime today..... it's still not here, ‼ if and when it does, I won't return... never again. I would rather just get my money back. 1:50pm. I was just in town overnight on business and the desk clerk at my hotel recommended Docs. Frankly I expected some place larger and drove right by it the first time. I'm not sure if that says more about how well marked the business is, or more about my lack of observational skills... Going in, the decor is relaxed and fits the smokehouse theme. You order at the counter then sit down at your table. I had Doc's Signature brisket sandwich, along with the seasoned fries. The sandwich was excellent! The brisket had a nice smoke ring and really good flavor even without the BBQ sauce. That is always what I look for in good brisket, is good flavor absent the sauce. Anyone can get good flavor by slopping BBQ sauce all over meat, the art is getting the flavor IN the meat and then complimenting it with a good sauce. This brisket was really good as was the selection of sauces. I want quite as impressed with the seasoned fries but they were good. The service staff was friendly and attentive. All told I would definitely recommend a stop at Doc's. I will come back for sure the next time I come through so I can try some of the other BBQ. read more

I have been a customer at Doc's for over eight years, my family and I have always supported local businesses and their strive to keep them around for their great flavors. However when I called about not getting a receipt for a carry out order the owner got very upset that I would consider blaming an employee for stealing because I wanted my receipt for accuracy. I felt very offended I understand this is a good business and I'm sure they hire good employees but you also have to understand the customers trying to protect themselves! I encourage everyone to check their meals twice!!!! I personally ordered over $120 worth of ribs and sandwiches and did not get enough barbecue for the sandwich's let alone the ribs. Plus most of the sauce spilled out in the bag. This is a good restaurant but think carefully and wisely who you speak with. read more

Went there last night. They were out of 2 entress. Got the pork... fries and chile.. The fries were stale and the stubby ends and not even hot enough.. the pork was lukewarm and the chile was not good at all.
