We did a lot of business with Ken 'the owner' before he became ill, and was forced to stop working to recover... I recently took my pickup in for a brake job and was severely overcharged by his daughter Karly... Incomplete job, and unwilling to admit fault. We video recorded her lying repeatedly. About the cost of the parts, her statement that she didn't mark them up at all, and sold them to me for what she paid for them. She then changed her story to "She had to charge what she was told by the Supplier to keep her "Certification" as an Installer... -All on Video- I was charged $457.60 for two rotors on my Tacoma. They cost $138 each, she marked them up $180.00 to get them 5 minutes away. I was shown the list price and actual cost by the Manager of the Parts Warehouse. My parts were marked up over list by Karly, over 65% markup... Then the old brake pads were left in there. Karly told us the Manager of the Warehouse called before I arrived, as if to make me sound disgruntled, but in Fact it was the other way around, Karly had called there to warn off giving me information and then lied about it. The Manager informed her we had already spoken earlier, I returned to the Warehouse after I picked up my Vehicle, and was informed of that. That was a Bald Faced lie... Her Dad would be ashamed, and I wish him well, but we will never take our vehicles back there... The dishonesty from Karly can not be excused.. This will be hard to grasp, but I took my car in at 4:00 p.m. the other day because the engine was misfiring (7 of 8 cylinders were ok). I got a call at 5:00 p.m., diagnosed as a defective cylinder coil, and all of the spark plugs appeared to be original (130,000 miles). Quoted under $500 for parts and labor. I got a call the following morning at 8:30 a.m., the car was ready to go. Unbelievable....the shop looked busy but they got my car finished in record time. They even provided me with a ride home the day before, and picked me up when I finished my breakfast. The shop was very clean, the staff friendly and professional. A wonderful place to do business. I was super impressed they were ready for me at the appointed time and I wandered down to Superfly for an adult beverage. Half a beer later they called to tell me it was the batteries and they had them in stock and I approved the $$ and work. Finished my adult beverage and returned to the shop - all done. To say the least none of them were very helpful. They were all overpriced. Very thankful when I called this business. I had a 2003 Honda Element in for an a/c clutch failure. The entire a/c unit compressor/clutch assy. needed replacement. I was quoted an unreasonable $1700.00 for the repair using OEM parts. The repair took over 2.5 weeks to complete partially due to the fact that it was 4th of July or something and the owners were closing for vacation. In any case, once I returned to Los Angeles, I was quoted less than $900.00 for the same repair using OEM parts. My suspicion that Doctor 'D' massively overcharges was confirmed. I believe Doctor 'D' is a competent mechanic, but the pricing was way too high. The speed of service for such a routine repair was not particularly impressive either. read more

We were in a bind we are from Medford so not familiar with repair shops in the Brookings area. We were trying to go to the beach but when we got in our 4Runner it wouldn't start. We popped the hood and to our surprise there was a mass of ferns and leaves and twigs in the engine compartment! What a shock! Anyway we determined a critter had decided to make a nest there. We removed the debris and noticed a wire had been chewed through. We called Dr. D and was able to get the wire fixed so we could get home! Ken was very kind and not condescending at all. Great customer service but poor mechanical service. I've taken my vehicles there many times and there's always an issue after, which they generally fix but it has lost me many hours of my time. The final straw came after they would not replace an air conditioner belt that they installed, along with the pulley, just three years ago. Apparently a steel radial belt is supposed to last three years. I'm a low maintenance consumer and although they made mistakes all the time, I either let the minor things go (trim pieces missing) or they fixed them (vacuum tubes not hooked up, parts they didn't install but still charged me, incorrect wiring) I was ok. But when they refuse to stand by their work and have the gall to tell me a steel belt should only last 3 years, time to move on. I should've done it a lot sooner I think. This is just a small town business that gets by because there's no real competition in Brookings. read more

Just outside of Brookings on a cold and rainy early morning my motor warning light came on with the advice to stop the car immediately. I was alone and quite far from home. I pulled into the Fred Meyer's lot and when a nice man saw me looking under the hood he asked if he could help. It appeared that my radiator was leaking. He told me that there was a great mechanic in town called Dr. D's auto care. I made my way over there (my husband called them ahead of time to tell them about my problem). Owner of the shop, I assume Dr. D, was friendly, professional and took care of my problem immediately. I was able to make it home with no worries. That kind of care and professionalism is worth its weight in gold and I highly recommend this shop if ever you run into car trouble.
