So, I would say if you just really like your classic car or truck and you need a transmission rebuild It's worth it to take it to Chuck.

No 1 Japanese Auto could have also tried to take advantage of a non-gearhead like myself. Instead Tony pointed out a fraction of a fraction of the issues that other place mentioned (10 months later, my car is still running fine). Another time took my car in because my breaks were squeaking/grinding in very specific conditions. Even when I called Tony said "we didn't see you that long ago, but better safe than sorry." After inspecting, he said my breaks don't need replacing yet, but maybe by the time for my next oil change. I figured I'd at least pay for the labor of looking. But when I picked it up -- nope! No charge. Tony is a real one.

Found Tony after my then current repair shop turned from small business to large business. Turning to large business the shop lost all the good customer service they gave. Tony was a great find, called my car "classic" and was happy to chat about my car. Called today to schedule an oil change, had not heard back from him from a VM I left 3 days ago. I spoke to him today, he flatly said, " I don't work on old cars anymore ". I asked him not even for an oil change? He said no, too hard to get parts. Ok- it's certainly his choice to not work on certain cars because of his ability, but be aware that his shop doesn't work on whatever he deems as "old". When electric and newer cars that require computers to diagnose and repair become the norm, places like Tony's will be considered "old" and fall out of need.

Imagine my daughter's horror: I just bought her a used, pretty little car with AWD. She was in love at first sight. I had it checked out with my SoCal mechanic and everything was great. All of the services were done at a local Audi dealer on time every time... did I mention from the Audi dealer? But within a week of transporting the car to her an alert screams "Switch Off Engine! The oil pressure is low!" She calls crying as she driving home from work saying she didn't do anything wrong but the alert tells her to stop driving immediately. I desperately tried to find a reputable mechanic over the weekend - out of state - with no knowledge of the city but thankfully Yelp led me to Steve. He was quick to respond and even allowed her to come that very morning despite his loaded schedule. He diagnosed her car, sent me texts of each inspection check he performed (with pictures) using an app of some sort that was very detailed. He discovered the problem was a broken solenoid bolt that caused the oil leak; replaced it; added new oil; drove it around to check the oil pressure; rechecked any faulty codes and called me to tell me my daughter's car is all fixed.... ... Wait for it ... The bill was just a fraction of the costs I thought I might have a pay. He could have said it was a gasket leak, or worse engine damage, etc. I wouldn't know and couldn't know but he was thorough, honest, and so impressively great professional. I love cars, but I'm not a mechanic and he saved me. He saved my dad-cred, saved me time, energy and money. I'm my daughter's hero but he's my mechanic hero. I will never send my daughter anywhere else. Everyone else in Seattle should do the same. Thanks Steve.

BE AWARE OF UPCHARGING DIAGNOSTIC TESTS + POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE…read more I had a very negative and stressful experience at this shop. I took my car in for an issue I clearly explained: broken hoses due to visible coolant leaks onto pavement and spraying coolant everywhere under the hood. Despite this, they insisted on performing expensive diagnostic tests (compression leak, dye test, and pressure test) that I thought were unnecessary. They gave me an estimate of $750 to replace the 2 broken heater hoses. I told them I'd call them back to authorize repairs after I speak with the mechanic who had replaced the radiator hoses in August 2024. This mechanic quoted me $225 to replace all 4 heater hoses, since they tend to age together. When I called Lake City Autoworks back, they told me the work had already been done even though I never authorized it. Instead of acknowledging they had made a mistake by completing work I never authorized them to do, they gave me an ultimatum: pay the $750 or allow them to reverse the repair and reinstall the broken hoses, but I was still stuck with $500 for diagnostic fees, which was never discussed or mentioned to me upfront. I tried to contest the fees, especially because compression leak and dye test are usually done when suspecting head gasket failures, and pressure test is usually done when there might be occult leaks. My car showed clear, visible coolant leaks, so I thought a visual inspection was all that was needed to confirm the diagnosis, especially since I could see/photograph the broken hoses without getting underneath the car. Nothing I said mattered, so my car was being held hostage by their 2 ridiculous choices. I had to ask a friend to speak on my behalf because I was completely frustrated and pushed into fight-flight-freeze mode. Whether it was because I threatened to leave a 1-star review and report them to the BBB, or because my friend was a male, but they offered to zero out my account. Through my friend, I was able to tell them I was willing to pay the $225 (though my friend relayed "$250") as quoted by another mechanic, but I wanted to speak to the service writer and the owner, after we all cooled down, because I wanted to find out what happened that caused unauthorized work to proceed and whether they routinely upcharge by adding unnecessary diagnostic fees. Surprisingly, they shut down all further communications, stating "we're good, and we've moved on." In essence, when I requested to hold off on my repairs until I could speak to my mechanic, they ignored my request, and when I requested to discuss what happened to cause all emotions to fly sky high, they declined my request. In between, there were some shady business. I would NOT recommend this shop to anyone. They lack transparency, engage in upselling unnecessary services, and provide poor customer service. I went to them once for a repair that they couldn't find the parts for, and for an oil change ($116, the most expensive oil change I ever had on my 1998 Camry). They do have good reviews and a few not-so-good-ones. Just be aware: this type of experience is potentially in the mix. I hope you catch them on a good day! NOTE: posting this on YELP b/c Google reviews mysteriously disappeared.

I used this service for over seven years while living in Seattle. This is my long-term (and long…read moreoverdue) review of their service. First, I've always found Ace Auto to be courteous, honest, and clear with communicating the work that my cars needed (a 2013 Camry switching to a 2017 RAV4 Hybrid later). They've always been up-front about what work is critical versus what can be delayed until later. Second, the owners are dedicated to ensuring that cars are repaired and returned in a timely fashion. When COVID hit in 2020, they went in on the weekend to fix my RAV4 all so that I could get my car back on the following Monday as promised (which wasn't actually their fault as a supplier error caused the wrong part to be shipped initially, and the right part only arrived when the shop was about to close on Friday). Third, while the service provided might not be the cheapest, I have NEVER had to take my car back in to get a repair "fixed" because it was done improperly the first time. This was really important to me because my car was my main mode of transportation as a family caregiver. I'm sorry that it took me almost eight years and two different cars to get around to writing this review. On the other hand, I can pretty confidently say that you can rely on Ace Auto to make sure your vehicle stays in great shape over the years. Thanks guys.
