We went again last night... it had been years since the last visit (which had not gone well). In that time Doe Belly's has expanded the seating. Completely different experience this time. I had the catfish and dirty rice, and my wife had the chicken. Both were very good, and the portions were generous. Her chicken wasn't like some places, where they smother a sliver of meat with heavy breading. No, there was a good hunk of chicken in there and the breading was just right. Overall, I think the value for what you get here is excellent. It isn't a fancy place you go for the atmosphere, it's what you would expect from an older, small town establishment. But you don't need anything else. You go here for the food. They keep it simple. You order at the counter and when it's ready they call your number to come get it. I've been dreaming of Doe Belly's for months. While perusing a car at Toyota of Rockwall, the Doe Belly's food truck rolled up and started frying fish. The manager dude, sensing I have a weakness for food (and hoping to sell a car), brought me a filet and it was absolutely fucking fantastic. I hate to cuss. I do (heh), but dammit it was the best fried catfish I had ever had. So good I have wondered if they would sell me just a little batch of their fish fry. I worked at a Cajun restaurant, where the most popular item on the menu was fried catfish, for over 8 years through high school and college- and I'm telling you, this was the. best. catfish. I. have. ever. had. Crunchy, not mushy. Seasoned just right. Amazing. Seriously. Go. I haven't been to their actual location in Forney yet (yet!) but I'm dyyyyyying to. Especially after having inferior fried catfish at another joint in Rockwall. Boo. I'm staking out a game plan considering what I've read on Yelp about wait times and seating. The hallmark of a truly good restaurant is consistency. When you can go to a place time and time again and get great food, it deserves recognition. I have noticed so many places that are over the place in consistency. This place is a great exception for a hard to find cuisine. We always hit this place on the way back from Canton Trade days and have never been disappointed. Food is always freshly made and truly Cajun style. Highly recommended. We stopped in here for a late lunch on Friday afternoon. This place has been repurposed from what looks like an old Sonic building, but don't let that put you off. We ordered the 3 piece catfish platters. THEY WERE AWESOME! The catfish, fries, hush puppies and slice of white bread arrived minutes later. The catfish was freshly prepared and SUPER hot. Once it cooled off to the point where we could try it, it was perfectly cooked. The cornmeal breading was just right. There was a bit of spicy heat to it. The fries were good and crispy. The only complaint that I had was that it only came with 2 hush puppies. I could have eaten a few more. Oh well, I will order extra next time that I go. read more

Love the food! I'm not a person who likes catfish but I crave this place! It is on the spicy side which I like. My kids like the chicken since they don't eat fish. They have the best tartar sauce ever! They do have limited seating but have a out door patio area. When it's cold they have propane lamp heaters which is nice. The one bad thing Is there is no room to navigate to order and get your drink if the inside is packed. Also if you call ahead it isn't always ready when they say it will be ready. You usually have to wait a additional 10/15 mins. read more

Let's be honest. Texas, for the most part, doesn't love vegetarians. When in the Metroplex to visit family, I resign myself to eating side dishes and hoping for the best. Well, the best veggie side dishes are at Doe Belly's. The rest of my family can gorge on fried fish, and I can easily make a meal out of hush puppies, corn and fries. (English people-- hush puppies are not actually made of puppies, so they're OK for vegetarians!) Staff is incredibly friendly, and this seems like an authentic, family-run small business. It's in the "downtown" of Forney, so slightly off the beaten track, but that also means it's easy to get to from the 80, without the nightmare one-way system of the big-box shops on the other side of the highway. The food was amazingly delicious, decently priced and brought out to us in a respectable amount of time. As a true southerner, I pride myself in knowing good catfish and this place is the real deal. The fish was tasty and seasoned well, however the fish is not real catfish in the sense of farm raised lake fish. This is Swai/ Basa catfish. I'm truly NOT a fan of fake fish. Hands down this little hole in the wall was surprisingly amazing !! We had shrimp ettouffee which was some of the best I've ever eaten ! I've rarely tried catfish in the past, but after seeing the reviews and having tried other top rated restaurants in Forney, I gave it a shot. Ate here for lunch a couple weeks ago while the family was watching a movie. I was impressed. Took the wife back with me the following week. She said she wasn't very hungry. She didn't think she would like catfish and just wanted a couple of shrimp. So, I ordered a larger combo meal with shrimp and catfish (enough shrimp that I could try a couple myself), and all I can say was I had to fight her off of both the shrimp and the catfish! She marveled at the flavor of the catfish. A truly new discovery. Great flavor here, very good service, and food is hot and delectable. When in Forney, I'll be looking for any excuse to come and eat here. I wish I lived in the area and could eat here regularly. read more

My family and I decided to eat here on our way to Rockwall based on the good reviews on here. It was a busy Friday evening but thankfully we didn't have to wait long to place our order or find a place to sit. The wait was pretty lengthy for our food which doesn't help when you have four hungry kids all under the age of 10. But when we got our food it was most certainly worth the wait. The food was just the right amount of spicy. The sweet tea was tasty, catfish was awesome, chicken was amazing and the fried okra was some of the best I've ever had. It was suggested that calling in orders ahead of time is really the way to go so you don't wait so long. We'll be sure to come back when we are in this area again. read more

Normally pretty good but tonight they just weren't on their game. Upon ordering we were told it'd be about an 45 mins to 1 hr get our food. We drove 40 mins to get there so we're staying. At the one hour mark I went and asked and they didn't have our order in the line up. So they looked at my receipt and quickly made it. The hour wait wouldn't be so bad if the majority of parties coming in after us would get their food while we continued to wait. So come to find out you're better off calling in your order so you don't wait so long. The food was food. The fried fish seemed spicier than usual.
