Stopped in on a Sunday evening: very spacious restaurant with an inviting bar so I decided to eat at the bar. Super friendly welcome from the wait staff and it turned out the owner was working too. Great conversation. Started with the armadillo eggs which are deep fried Jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese and served with ranch. These things are a weakness of mine and I ate the entire order. Next had a two meat platter with brisket and jalapeño cheese sausage. Sides were fried okra and broccoli. They have their fried food game down. Okra was hot and crispy and well seasoned. Delicious. The broccoli tasted like homemade steamed broccoli and was the exact texture I like. My brisket was super tender and tasty and the sausage was satisfying. I used the spicy sauce which gave everything a kick. Finished with the banana pudding with nilla wafers. Stuffed! Delicious meal and so friendly - I'll be back maybe for when they have live music on a weekend. read more

Since this is so close to home, it's become one of our go to's... We have not had bad service once, and their food is pretty good too. My only issue with this place is the miniature sides provided. What most places might use for serving some gravy or other sauce. They use for your sides. But other than that, their smash burger is awesome. For dinner I had the two meat plate. I got smoked sausage with Jalapeno cheese on side as well as sliced brisket. I got one slice wet (fatty) and the rest lean since they weight it out versus by the slice. As for the two sides, I got cream corn and baked beans. Also came with toast. But one first sight I was a little disappointed that my toast was not Texas toast. Not because we just in Texas but that is what you serve with BBQ folks. So already got a disappointment building. Then I tried a small piece of brisket. Luke warm at the taste and got to say no real strong Smokey flavor and it was brittle and dry. Yes lean dries out fast and all the lean pieces were dried up. Sorry but that is not a good thing when wanting brisket, let alone Texas BBQ brisket. Sauce is not going to bring this back to life. I will say the wet slice (fatty piece) was a lot more moist but again no real strong smoke flavor. Something is up when the joint does not even smell smoky. The cream of corn was hot, in fact screaming hot as if it had been microwaved in the serving dish Outer edges cool but screaming mouth hurt hot on the inside. Flavor wise, not a lot there. Corn tasted like canned corn and so much corn starch filling. The baked beans were the only real shiner for tonight's meal. But I had to do a healthy blast of their BBQ sauce in the dish yo add flavor. To be honest, the sauce in the squeeze tube was the only thing really tasty at this joint. Service was ok, took them a while to even come around to check on drink levels. So if you know of a better place, go there. But if you're starving and near this joint. It will be ok. We went on a Friday night for our Valentine celebration. Since catfish was the special, we gave it a try. The fish had a little too heavy a coating for our taste. My wife had onion rings and mac and cheese as her sides. Onion rings knocked it out of the park. I had baked beans and potato salad as my sides. The baked beans were too strong a flavor and the potato salad was satisfactory. Our grandson had barbecue brisket which he said was okay but the sausage on his two meat plate was a winner. His green beans were so-so. We did not have a dessert but they are worth a try, because of ample serving size. We may try again. read more

The past couple times I've gone over the last few months to eat at Sammy Lou's my food has been under cooked, overly greasy, or given portions of food that honestly feel insulting with how little I was given. It is hard for me to drop five stars anywhere, but especially at a barbecue joint. However, this place was fantastic. The brisket was moist, with a great smoke ring and just bursting with flavor from the Applewood blend used to smoke the meats. The ribs practically fell off the bone and leapt into your mouth. The ribs had a crisp, sharp bark but were tender and moist throughout and packed with flavor as well. The sides were pretty damn good too. The potato salad and coleslaw were spot on, but the pinto beans knocked it out of the park. The bar/restaurant is a small, quaint location with and almost family like atmosphere and the employees were wonderfully engaging. The food came out fast and did not disappoint. If you find yourself in Rowelett with and empty stomach, you should definitely stop here. read more

The best part of the meal was the fried pickle app. Should've gone to Dickies instead. Bar menu is out of date, ordered a "premium" frozen margarita to be served a well margarita which was the worst margarita I've ever had. Smoked turkey was decent, sausage was cold and the brisket and pulled pork were bland. Waitress was nice and attentive. Host was apparently eating at the host stand. Pulled pork was not juicy (on the verge of dry) and had no flavor.Needed salt. Potato salad lacked flavor and was more like mashed potatoes. That also needed salt. My husband's Nashville chicken sandwich was ok. The spices they put in the batter were good but it tasted like it was cooked in dirty grease. The only thing that was good was the macaroni and French fries. Even after I didn't like the food, I considered getting a dessert, but the waitress took too long to check back on us towards the end. It's been a few years since I've been here, but the bbq is still some of the best in the state. I tried the catfish this time as well and it was breaded and seasoned just right. Yummy yummy yummy! Their new location is just huge, which was a welcome change from their old location just down the street in a strip mall which pretty much required you do to take away, as there wasn't a lot of room to sit there. The other half of the restaurant had a Christmas party but even with that, we were able to get our meals pretty quickly after ordering. The pick 2 meats meal was plenty of food. Food was great. Love the meatloaf I actually ordered it with brown gravy instead of the red gravy that was recommended by my server it was delicious. The service was OK though not attentive. It felt very country to me, which isn't a bad thing at all. Our party decided to venture out on Saturday night to Rowlett and give them a try from reports we heard - we were not disappointed. Be sure to start off with the Fried Green Tomatoes !!!!!!!!! We had as our main courses the Fried Catfish, Blackened Catfish, Meatloaf, and Barbeque - all were very good. Next time we will stick to the home cooking, the barbeque was rather a disappointment up next to the home cooking dishes, real fatty and not that much taste. The service was good everyone was friendly and the ambiance was nice, but unfortunately the food really missed the mark. The turkey was dry, the brisket wasn't fresh and lacked flavor, and the potato was hard. I asked for extra cheese and butter but got barely any cheese and no butter at all. We stopped here after going to a playground in Rowlett for the little one. Found it thanks to Yelp reviews. It's a down-home country feel to the inside. Seating is limited but we were able to snag a booth immediately. Prices are very reasonable. I had the two meat platter with two side for $13.99. The brisket was good but not as tender as I've had at Terry Black's, Lockhart's, or Pecan Lodge. But by no means was it tough or bad. I ordered lean so maybe the moist is better. But I don't like all the fat that often comes with moist. I liked the smoked turkey better, more smoke, very tender, very flavorful. They take their sides seriously and I really liked my Cole slaw and potato salad. The spicy BBQ sauce was so good that we bought a pint to take home. The wife had brisket quesadillas and loved them. The homemade salsa was excellent. We wanted to take some of that home too but they don't sell it, but it is really good. The little one ate a lot of her Mac n' cheese and she is really picky about what she puts in her mouth (other than chocolate). Overall, we liked this place and would definitely return. read more

Last year, before they moved, this place was amazing. They catered several events for us. Now that they moved, service has completely diminished. Don't try to call them, they don't answer. Instead you get a text that says to order online. When you call you also get option 1 to order online. First of all, what? I'm smarter than the average joe. I obviously tried to order online and the options I needed were not available. I tried to call 4 times and got the same response each time. This is not acceptable. You don't simply cut out human interaction. Ok. They are right down the road. I walk in and ask for the manager. The super sweet bartender tried three times to have the boss come speak with me. He was too busy and only wanted my "card". Well, now we are too busy to use Sammy Lou's for any further events. Not a dime will be spent here again. It's truly time for customer service to come back. Extremely disappointed. Good luck if you need a human. They don't work there anymore. So sad. read more
