While traveling, my husband searched for restaurants online while I was driving and picked this one. We didn't want to drop a lot of money on a fancy place and didn't want burgers. He said it had 3* but when we got there, and I saw the somewhat strange entry and atmosphere, I immediately went to YELP. There it was rated 2* and every other restaurant in Munising was listed from 3-5* on YELP. It really didn't matter because the town was dead and nothing else looked open. Li'L Abner was a satirical newspaper comic strip for 30 years (1934-1964) about a fictional clan of hillbillies in the impoverished village of Dogpatch so that is the theme at this restaurant. I don't remember seeing funny names on the menu but if there were, they are based on the language from Dogpatch. Anyway, we were immediately told we could sit anywhere by a very friendly waitress who then had our drink orders on the table in minutes. My husband ordered the perch dinner special (they were out of whitefish which has lots of good reviews) with a baked potato and side salad which was huge for $21.99. He loved it all. I ordered the chef salad and it was also huge and so fresh and delicious. The waitress let me choose more than one type of salad dressing also. I am shocked at the reviews that say their food is overpriced because I haven't see a salad that big for only $12.99 in a long time! That is very reasonable. Our food was out in minutes (there were only a few other tables occupied). The place was clean and quiet except for some soft music in the background from the 60s. Wuuuut. We were looking for a late-morning Bloody Mary while on vacation. Oddly the town has very few spots for such a desire. We stumbled upon this 50-year old supper clubby place. The interior was dark and dank, it smelled of old socks. The bloody was decent at best. The "country boy" platter was okay. Best to avoid this place until they update the inside. read more

Best place - for the price - to eat in Munising, Michigan! Love the characters all over the decor and the menu was just as entertaining to read. Craft beer menu and fresh caught fish paired well with a fresh soup and salad bar that was simply but amply appointed. It was a true delight of a dinner after taking the Pictured Rock Cruise! Staff is genuinely nice. I mean that. They are a nice outgoing crew. If you stop into this very interesting establishment you only need to know one thing about it: keep driving about 3 minutes more west till you get to Hardee's and eat there. The gas station across the street also has 2 cheeseburgers for $3.50. I seriously feel like I should've gotten a T shirt that said "CONGRATULATIONS ON NOT GETTING ECOLI FROM OUR BREAKFAST BUFFET". The Dogpatch has a wide selection of sandwiches for different appetites, and for those the restaurant can be recommended. The non-sandwich food we ordered seemed processed rather than freshly made. There was a Gordon Food truck unloading boxes of potatoes when we arrived. For me, this means that the food was probably not fresh. But I was still willing to give it a chance. When you walk in, it is reminiscent of an old fashioned bar. It's pretty dark in the restaurant, with little natural lighting. It also had this weird sock-hop music and cartoon character decor which seemed out of place. When we were seated, we were told that the only thing on the menu was the breakfast buffet. We didn't object, so we stayed. Let me preface by saying that I love buffets, and will always knock down a few plates of food. However, for the first time in my life, I didn't finish my first plate. This food was truly awful. The scrambled eggs were fine. The biscuits and gravy were ok I guess. But The hash browns were so bad that I couldn't eat them. They were burnt and had crusted up cheese on them that made them stuck together. The ham was terrible quality, and was rubbery. There were French toast sticks and a couple other things on the buffet that I didn't try. Instead, I decided to give them my $24 for two of us, and be on our way. I would not eat here again. The soup tasted just like Campbells. My cheeseburger was very obviously a frozen patty, like the kind you get in a box at Wal-mart had zero flavor. Love this place for breakfast!!! Our hotel served a pretty good breakfast and yet we came here every morning for breakfast after we discovered it. There biscuits and gravy are to die for. They are amazing. My boyfriend got the special the first day, which was good and a great value and the breakfast that came with ham on the second day and he was in love. Wow. We stopped in after a Pictured Rocks Cruise (highly recommended) and regretted it. The restaurant was established in 1966 and is themed after the Lil' Abner comic strip from the 30s that ran until the 70s. It is old-fashioned. Host staff had no experience in a restaurant. She didn't know how to seat tables so there were waitresses standing without tables while they were on a wait. The menu was near-incomprehensible. With all the jargon that tried to make it sound like the comic strip, there were walls of text that obscured any sort of explanation for the menu. Prices were HIGH. On the shore of Lake Superior where whitefish should be plentiful, a small basket of whitefish and fries was $19.95. Adding a salad bar was $5.95 to any meal. Our party had the whitefish (small portions), the charburger (like a hockey puck), and open face beef sandwich (okay -- covered in brown gravy). The salad bar had fresh iceberg lettuce, but the pasta salad was swimming in italian dressing and the pudding was somehow flavorless. We actually overheard a waitress say to a different table "Why did you order pizza here? You should have gone to Picture Rocks Pizza." I wish someone had given us that advice before we sat down. The 4th of July is when we stopped; they had a big buffet going on at the time so we decided on that because we were starving. Honestly, the food wasn't that great, but did the job. I wish we would have looked this place up on yelp first. We went up for the pictured rocks cruise and on revommendations from coworkers that said this is the place to go. I ordered the ribeye and my wife the chicken. The ribeye had zero seasoning and was overcooked more like something you would get from a truckstop, george webb, waffle house etc. My wife ordered the chicken amd it was absolutely disgusting. The waitress even told us after we returned the food that it is the most returned dish. They use precooked frozen chicken and then fry it again. I thought my wife was being finicky about the chicken until i tasted it. Needless to say dont order those 2 items on the menu. They do have cool fake southern decorations.
