We were hesitant of trying this place because of the other bad reviews, but honestly if you want breakfast, this is your place. We were served our breakfast within 10 minutes of being seated and the staff was friendly and attentive. The food was good and there was plenty. Pricey, the food is overrated in descriptions on the menu. The service was great, our waitress was very upbeat and cheerful. Tourists in the area should look elsewhere; I usually steer clear of fast food but have to say, in this case, Subway would have been a better value/experience. My recommendation to management is to overhaul the menu ASAP, so locals will also visit. I ordered a Mediterranean salad which had pretty straight forward ingredients. The chicken had to have been frozen, or still pink in the middle. With the low lighting in the place I really couldn't tell you. The color was off, and cooked chicken isn't supposed to be soggy in texture. It really isn't even worth going. So we could only find this restaurant open on a Wednesday evening around 4. We knew once we left town, we would not find anything. A vast majority of restaurants were closed due to reduced staff. Friendly service! Clean restaurant, family friendly atmosphere. We were visiting from out of town and were directed here for dinner. Ribeye Special $25. We found the food to be overpriced for the quality and under-seasoned. That is the only reason for the 3!rating. Lord, there ain't much in Munising. And there certainly isn't much in the way of dining establishments. After a long trek from Detroit to the Upper Peninsula, and after suffering through a bland ole pastie for lunch, I was ready for some good grub. I did not get it at the Dogpatch. How did I find myself there, though? How did I wind up at the doors, convincing myself that this... THIS... was the place I wanted to spend my money? Truthfully, it was the cartoons. Yes. Cartoons. How could I resist a clapboard building on the shores of Lake Superior that had Lil' Abner-esque cut-out cartoons slapped on its storefront? The simple answer: I couldn't. I simply couldn't pass it up. Entering the Dogpatch is like walking into an Appalachian moonshine operation, except for those infernal cartoons yelling at you from the walls: "Come git yer dinner!" Despite being full, the restaurant was oddly quiet: the patrons all had a glazed, vaguely Village of the Damned look about them. It was a bit disarming. But then I learned what the cause of their stupor was. It was the Dogpatch's food. So bland, so deeply average, it is bound to send even the most energetic person into a downward spiral of shame and humiliation. I wish I could tell you what I ordered, but everything has been graced with a pseudo-Appalachian moniker, like Ma's Krunchy Froot Conkers. (I just made that up.) Let's call my meal Heapy Hammy Cheese Blow-out. I call it this because the ingredients were the following: ham, cheese, English muffin, pickles, and 1000 Island dressing. Honestly, it doesn't sound that bad on paper. Then it arrives. The ham was school-cafeteria quality - thin, shaved, flavorless. The cheese. Heavens, the cheese. It was like slightly warmed-up Velveeta that stuck to the roof of my mouth like a gloppy, rubbery glue that only tasted vaguely of its intended flavor (that would be cheese, folks). The dressing was completely overwhelmed by both of these aforementioned factors, and I hardly noticed the English muffins. And then there's the crinkle-cut French fries that made Ore-Ida look like blue ribbon winners. The staff was nice, though. And I mean genuinely nice. Like, sincerely interested in our experience. This place is as kitschy and disappointing as it looks. When we first walked in,there was this "smell"... I don't know what it was, but it wasn't food, and it wasn't pleasant. The menu!!!! Oy fucking VAY! We decided on a whim to stop in for dinner on a Saturday night after a full day out on Lake Superior. The 50s style decor outside was what drew us in. The entrance area was a little weird, you walk down a long narrow ramp. I felt like I was a herding steer coming off of a truck for slaughter. We were told to sit wherever we wanted and the waitress took our drink order. We began looking over the menu and it was very difficult to understand what the food items were, as everything was written in a hillbilly type slang. It was bizzare. My husband looked up previous Yelp reviews and we both agreed not to order main food items. Yelp users made comments about food being not Good enough to pay for. My son ordered a peach cobbler but they were out. He then ordered a blueberry cobbler. My husband ordered onion rings. The cobbler was good per my son. And the onion rings were ok, but the pricing was over the top. $3 per soda. $6 for onion rings. Other menu items were grossly over priced. Considering how awful the Yelp reviews are it was shocking they charged so much. The waitress and other wait staff were friendly and welcoming. I give this establishment 2 stars because we were actually scared to order food here and the mediocre food didn't justify the big bill. For our 3 sodas, 1 blueberry cobbler and onion rings we were charged over $18. We are grateful to the previous Yelp reviewers for protecting us and guiding us to make a better food selection for dinner. I'm sure tourists from the boats are drawn in my the kitsch but locals know this is a hit-or-miss depending upon whether the good cooks/good waitress show up on a particular day. Apparently feuds with management are a plenty...one learns this simply by sitting too close to the bar and overhearing the serfs complain about the lord non-stop. The food can be good to great, choose wisely. Teh salad bar is pretty mediocre and excusing it as "this is Michigan's Upper Peninsula" simply lets a restaurant get away with putting out crap rather than quality fare. Specials are probably your best bet and most sandwiches are good. If you're looking for something to stop the hunger pangs, go here. The service was actually good, very friendly and attentive, but it didn't make up for the rubbery "fresh" "local" fish, the sad salad bar, and the ridiculous no wine by the bottle policy. No wine by the bottle? Probably because they buy it in a box. Also, the horribly gimmicky decor and difficult to read menu really detracted from the experience here. The good? Cheap. The bad? Everything else. We only came here because we got in to town late and wanted something quick. Our hotel was advertising them, so we went. We were seated promptly then our waitress, who was probably 14 or 15, didn't come over for about 10 minutes. I overheard another waitress talking to ours, asking her if she needed help because she had so many tables. I knew that wasn't a good sign. We got our food after about 25 minutes. We were seriously 1 minute away from getting up and leaving. Wife had a gyro, I had fish n chips. Both looked like they were out of a Costco/Sam's Club box. Really, terribly mediocre. It was food at least. Fries were like micro fries you ate as a kid. I think they were microwaved too. I had also asked to substitute cole slaw for fries. I was charged an extra $1.75 on my bill for this. I asked the waitress what happened, she said it's an upcharge. This was not mentioned when I placed my order, or on the menu. We pulled in to grab some lunch on our way to Au Train. First, the weird skinny ramp down to the seating area was weird and uncomfortable as you stood in line for a table. I should've taken a picture of the breakfast buffet but it was best described as old, stale and cheap type of food. While I was there they did not replenish any of the items. Dogpatch was recommended to us by a local. I wish I read the reviews 1st. The main offering is the buffet, it just did not look good so I opted for a burger & the wife a chicken sandwich. The burger nothing to note, your average purchased burger patty. The chicken was not so good, very over processed "chicken breast". The food was just not good. The place is dark however in the few streaks of sunlight that would sneak in you could then see the cobwebs, dust & dirt, way way past due for a thorough cleaning. Also we unfortunately visited during a warms spell, inside was super hot & stuffy borderline unbearable. You would be much better off finding some outside dining if it's warm out. Service however was very good, I sensed that should could tell that we where in hurry to leave and almost seamed apologetic. read more

A Munising staple. I've taken many many trips here and a stop at the Dogpatch is a must. It is fun, odd, and unique. The wood cut outs are everywhere. Each has a little story to tell. This time I got the "Urban Suburban Chic" a grilled chicken sandwich with mushrooms and swiss cheese. While nothing special it was good. All their menu items have fun names like that. I would agree with the others. The salad bar is lacking. But understand this. It is Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This is about as far away from fresh produce as you can get. So I'll cut them some slack there. Oh and they have a nice kids menu. The one I liked the best was the Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich. It was only $.20 cents for every year your kid is old. What a disappointment :( I grew up in Munising and my grandparents took us to the Dogpatch all the time. Granted this was almost 40 years ago but it's so sad to see this place going down hill each time I pass through. This will certainly be my last visit. The server was LOUD and crass. Not sure why she thinks it's any kind of okay. When we finished eating she refused to hand me the check and insisted on handing it to my brother stating "the man pays." Are you kidding me??!! Not cute, not funny, not appropriate. The food was merely average and the salad bar had butterscotch pudding? as the only choice of pudding. No jello? The ambiance (or lack thereof) was horrible. Obviously not updated in decades. Upon walking through the door it was confusing as to whether we should seat ourselves or wait to be seated. Trash. There was food on the floor in the corner. Our table was dirty even after the waitress "cleaned" it. The decor is just creepy. The menus are filthy and you have to read it completely just to figure out what the goofy ass names of the dishes really are. Somehow they manage to take fish caught locally that day and dry it out with flavorless batter (for $20). They had pizza which was pre made frozen crust with what tasted like spagettio's sauce on it. I'm fairly sure their 'burger meat' that was on the kids menu isn't even meat (2 year old took a bite and refused to eat it). I felt like I was in an Archie comic, with the restaurant's kitschy decor. That was a fun plus. Also, our server was attentive and warm. This is where the niceness ends. We opted for the seafood buffet, which was $15.95. I chose this because a simple plate of whitefish was $18.95 by itself. It made no sense. The seafood buffet came with the soup and salad bar as well, so at least I had that...right? No. The salad bar consisted of lumpy dressing and wimpy greens, and the toppings options were few. The soup bar had one thing: Hamburger Soup. I'm a pescatarian, and decided to pass, but my partner, a confirmed carnivore, took one look and did the same. Watery sloppy joe? No, thanks. On to the fish: all the fillets still had skin on it (my pet peeve), and 90% of the options were deep-fried in thick batter and tasteless. The shrimp were majority tasteless battery lumps. Even the baked fish option had no flavor, despite a very seasoned veneer. Things were soggy and soft, and looked like they had been sitting out for a while. The green beans were bland and the hush puppies were cold. The people that were dining all around us all had the same disgruntled looks on their faces, so I'm assuming the regular dishes weren't that much better. I'm guessing this is a tourist spot, known for its "eccentricity", since it had a gift shop full of apparel branded with their name. If you're like me, and go to restaurants for the food and not the story-worthiness of an establishment, then this place is NOT worth the money. You will leave hungry. Had we had phone service we would have YELP'd place to go and we definitely would not eaten here. To begin with there is a musty smell throughout the entire place. They say that if the bathroom is disgusting, don't look in the kitchen. I can't even imagine. There was no toilet paper, so I had to go tell a server. For what this place is it is great. The atmosphere and staff are unique, helpful and friendly. The food won't overwhelm you with greatness but it is good. I've visited perviously and had an excellent prime rib dinner with pretty tasty mushroom soup at the salad bar. Tonight, celebrating my 5 year anniversary with a UP trip we stopped by. I order the round steak, basically a burger without a bun, topped grilled mushroom and onions. Greasy and delicious! The salad bar seemed to be in good shape. I had excellent tomato soup and I must compliment them on the quality of their ranch... I'm a bit of a ranch connoisseur if that's possible. The significant other ordered a BLT and said it wasn't the best but it was a step up from the average diner. I'm happy to hit this place up every time i'm in town...
