This small shack in the back of a parking lot off Monroe Ave has been many things over the decades but Dogtown is the best "restaurant" to occupy this spot. I stopped in mid-afternoon on a Saturday and the place was non-stop crowded. I chose their interpretation of a Chicago dog which was very tasty though native Chicagoans would not recognize this as their beloved dog. I cut them some slack because it was very good and their toasted bun was super! I plan to return because I saw at least 6 other hot dog creations on the menu that looked worth trying. There are not many places that can pull off this type of concept, but this one does! The focus is truly on hot dogs and they are awesome. I tried the Mongrel and the Fido Castro. OK...Yes It's true they don't have Meat hot sauce..But they have something similar to rochester meat hotsauce called "Cincinnati chili" Do not let this stop you from trying Dogtown. I too used to be one of those "Rochester hot dog purists". That is until i Visited Dogtown and tasted probably one of the best hot dogs in Rochester. Don't get me wrong, There is some pretty great hot dogs at various "Rochester hots joints". It's just Dogtown is on a completely different level...One might say Gourmet..But it can't be gourmet...it's a hot dog..and it's pretty cheap. On average 4 bucks a dog. I think it's gourmet though. I got 2 Hot dogs. The "irish settler" and The "chicago bulldog" The irish settler has sauerkraut, swiss, cornedbeef, and Russian dressing...It taste just like a Reuben. It's big, messy, and oh so yummy. It's fabulous. The chicago bulldog Is their take on a "chicago dog" It comes topped with diced tomato's, chopped onions(sweet onions), Relish, Pepperoncini rings, sliced green peppers, and celery salt and mustard. I have never had an authentic chicago dog but this tasted like what i imagined one to taste like. All the veggies and toppings on it tasted garden fresh. The only thing i wished it had was the Poppy Seed bun...but the rolls they use on all the hot dogs are so tasty I gave it a pass. Which by the way the rolls seem like they are specially baked for them...and they are toasted so when you bite in to the hot dog you get that slight "crunch". My brother had the "Fidel Castro" and the Mongrel...He also enjoyed both of his. It's just a small little joint and the seating is minimal...they have small tables in front of one large booth(like 3 booths in there) so if you stay to eat you might be sitting next to a stranger If there is a crowd. Can't believe it took me so long to come to Dogtown! Definitely agree now that it has the best garbage plate in town. Hard to believe the last time I was in here there was no such thing as Yelp! Kiddo picked it when we were talking about options, and the words dog and plate apparently work! All sillyness aside, this is a Rochester gem. The inside with its funky colors and the dog photos lining the walls, not to be outshined by their awards lining the center beam inside. A smallish outdoor patio, and parking that is wedged in off street of Monroe, in the busy area of Monroe avenue. The food is still as quality as I remember, zweigles red hots in several different fashions and a multitude of other offerings from sandwiches to meatless options, and of course plates! Had a great time over a fantastic lunch. The staff is as congenial as you could ever imaging. I got the strong feeling that everyone works there because they want to. You can feel it in the atmosphere and in the high quality of the food. One of us had the dog pound hot. It was completely buried by all of the toppings. It looked great! I had the vegan Italian sausage with all of the toppings, including meat sauce. The girl taking my order tripple checked to be sure that I really did ask for meat sauce on a vegan sausage. She smiled broadly when I told her that I like the vegan sausage because it tastes great, but that I wasn't vegan or vegetarian. I just eat it there because it's so darn good. It is true. Dogtown has a pretty fantastic cheese steak. The only downside is that they do not offer Boss Sauce or Country Sweet. I mean, isn't that pretty standard in Rochester? Anyhoot, pack your own if you plan on dining in. In addition to their tasty cheese steak, they make a pretty good garbage plate. But my absolute favourite are the fries. Well being as I was in Rochester, I had to check out the local grub. Yelp and google led me to DogTown. It did not disappoint. I got the split plate- Mac and home fries, 1 dog 1 burger cheese and a little meat sauce. Everything was super tasty, the cold Mac salad with hot fries and meat sure did mix well and each bite delivered a taste you'd enjoy. It's a lot for 1 person- I couldn't finish it all. Dogtown is my jam!! I absolutely love this place. As stated in many of my reviews, I love a good hot dog, and Dogtown certainly delivers. Bonus points- all the hot dogs on the menu are named after actual dogs!!! As a huge dog lover this makes me ridiculously excited. I usually get the golden retriever, a hot dog topped with cheddar sandwiches between two strips of bacon on their signature roll. I have also gotten the chihuahua and the coyote- both have a Mexican flair that is wonderful. Dogtown is in a college town and a cute hipster sort of area. The prices are super reasonable- $4 for a crazy dressed up hot dog?! Get outta here! They also serve sides such as fries, sweet potato fries etc. and they have the famous Rochester garbage plates and sandwich offerings as well. I really love that they have options for vegetarians and people with gluten sensitivity as well! Anything can be turned vegetarian by substituting a veggie dog or burger and while I eat the meats, I respect those that don't, as so does Dogtown. They have indoor seating as well as a patio. And let me just say that nothing makes me happier than eating a dog breed naked hot dog on the patio and seeing REAL LIFE DOGS hanging out with their owners. Dogtown is the best. I've been coming here since my college days and now I've addicted my wife as well. Whenever we pass through Rochester we try to stop for lunch or dinner, especially in the nice weather months so we can sit on the patio and sit with the cute dogs. We have even brought our dog here once for lunch with us! This places serves up specialty hot dogs, it is their thing. Despite that, since I'm in Rochester, i get the garbage plate anyway. I know, i know, for shame. But i can't stay away. I get the split plate with a burger and a dog, on Mac salad and home fries and loaded with everything. It comes with bread and butter on the side. It's exactly the right amount of food for me. They do offer half plates as well, for those who crave the plates but aren't as hungry. They are also super conscious of people's dietary restrictions and offer gluten free buns, veggie dogs, meatless options, etc. They are pretty small inside but they do have the patio. A staple in Rochester for years, this place has it all. Off street parking, outdoor seating and a dazzling array of hotdogs. Most of the selections have cute names like the Bernese Mountain Dog, the Caribbean Wild Dog or the Rhodesian Ridgeback. Each name designates a unique topping put upon the frank. Dogtown raises wieners to the level of art, not only are the flavors of the toppings unique but the bun is exceptional. It is not the usual mushy white bread bun but a great sort of French bread with a V-cut down the center. It has an excellent flavor and it is a great support for all the toppings. While in Rochester we were looking for a place to grab a quick bite to eat before going to the Science Museum. Dog town was a perfect place! All their prices are very reasonable and their food was good with a lot of menu options including vegetarian options! I'm not a vegetarian by any means but thought it was nice they had a diverse menu. Their portions are large and are very filling. If you go and aren't that hungry I would recommend splitting your meal. I tried the Mexican dog and was not disappointed. My brother in law had a garbage plate which he had a hard time finishing so I got to help him finish it. I loved the mac salad-probably my favorite part of the plate. The service was very prompt and served our order on time. They must have it down pretty well since business was pretty constant when we were there.
