When I lived in Rochester a few years ago, I didn't make it to Dogtown. I will admit this has to do with the fact that I cannot eat hot dogs (Blame dime a dog night at a baseball game...) Anyway, it's 2020 and I am back for a few months. My friend loves Dogtown and informed me that they do serve food other than hot dogs. They do have hamburgers, veggie options, and other types of sandwiches. We've had Dogtown twice since I've been here and both times I got the Polish sausage, and let me tell you: it did not disappoint. The sauerkraut just tops it off for me. It's a pretty big sandwich, so much that I am full after eating half of the sandwich. And the prices! What a deal! We immediately called them and they refused used to correct their mistake or offer any solution to the problem. That was the first time I ingested meat (against my will) in the last 10 years, and if I have my way than no one else will make that disgusting mistake either. Dogtown isn't pretty, but it's definitely good. Came here with some friends looking to try a garbage plate (when in Rome...), and definitely wasn't disappointed. Side note: the walls have pictures of dogs everywhere, which is expected but super cute. We ordered the garbage plate with two cheeseburger patties, a hot dog, and two sides of French fries and macaroni salad. Wow, this plate was enormous. Between the three of us, we could barely finish it. The French fries are probably some of the best I've ever had, and everything had a ton of flavor. When I moved to Rochester, to first try the garbage plate I first went to Nick Tahou's, which I believe was a mistake. Dogtown is a much better version of the garbage plate. It has higher quality ingredients (meat, Mac salad, potatoes). Additionally, Nick tahou's is SUPER depressing, it looks like you're eating in an old school cafeteria that hasnt been cleaned in years. You can come here on any day (beside Sunday because closed) and they have something for everyone. It is easy to make things vegan if you're into that. Went here with my husband as he has wanted to check it out for a long long time. I really appreciated the fact they had a parking lot and I didn't have to deal with trying to find a spot on the street! Very cute little place, and I was really surprised how brisk business was in the middle of the day on a Monday. Being school vacation week may have been a factor in that I suspect, as many patrons had young kids with them. We here easily able to find a couple of seats however. Our order was reader very quickly despite the large volume of business. I went very basic and had the Cincinnati Red which is pretty similar to a chili dog. Delicious! And I don't even really like hot dogs that much! Fries were dangerously good too. My husband had a Cincinnati Red and a Golden Retriever which is a dog with Ruben style toppings, and he was very pleased with both.I definitely way eyeing those garbage plates for next time, those looked great. Dogtown is awesome goodness at its best. If you like chill dogs burgers and Mac salad (who doesn't) then you will love love love this place. I find myself here a few times a week. It's that righteous. This isn't your dad hotdog stand. Some items have a near artisan twist and the menu is packed with flavorful selections. The location is smaller but perfect because most people dine then dash shortly after. There's outdoors seating for those bright sunny days. They have a speciality menu with unique concoctions that will tempt you The staff is young and hip and totally happy to be there. Dogtown is a good time and it's open late most nights to 12 ish. Interesting toppings on the former, but I the Hawaiian dog didn't quite come together because the sweet BBQ sauce and pineapple was too much sugar and off-putting. Also, the dogs strangely didn't have much bite too them, which was disappointing. A Chicago dog probably would've been a better choice. Still, interesting toppings, good sides, and reasonable prices. My 'mongrel' had a little bit of everything on it and try as I might, I couldn't eat it with my hands HA. We went for a half trash plate (which still had a cheeseburger, mind you) and our two sides were mac salad and baked beans plus hot sauce, ketchup, etc. It was a hot mess of delicious - a pile of food that had so many flavors and textures it stuffed me silly. Dogtown took my garbage plate virginity, and I'm glad it did. Let's break it down -- I ordered the double "plate" cheeseburger patty, hot dog, crispy fries, mac salad, onions, mustard, and "meat hot sauce." First, the locals kept calling the topping "meat sauce" I was thinking they were going to slap a giant ladle of mom's sunday italian meat sauce on top of my fries and add mustard and honestly, I was a little repulsed. Turns out - this "meat sauce" is actually exactly like Cincinnati chili. It's sweet and a little runny. I felt bad for the table because they waited for me to be shocked that fries, mustard and onions, hot dogs, and their so called "meat sauce" were all thrown together but in reality I was just thinking... this is literally just a hot dog and chili cheese fries with mac salad on the side! I really enjoyed how crispy the fries were. The chili had a ton of flavor. I could've done without the burger it was pretty bland. And the mac salad was just OK for me, and so much so I couldn't eat it after I hoovered the fry situation. I enjoyed the experience of hanging with the locals at a hometown fav out on the picnic tables. And I really enjoyed my garbage plate (until about an hour later when I thought I was going to die because I ate too much). They are able to turn simple hotdogs into filling and delicious meals with all of their well-paired toppings! The "Pitbull" was hearty and the "Flynn" (named after this years Westminster Best in Show winner) was refreshing. The prices are excellent, and the place has such a cozy vibe! The combo of the extremely fresh, locally baked buns, German Frank Zweigle hot dogs, with all the creative toppings is unbeatable. Now, I'm positive that I haven't tried every place, and some people will roll their eyes when they hear that I even factor in location to my assessment... but it does have a bit of an effect. Sorry, but I'm not craving a garbage plate 1 mile from Wayne County. I don't NEED a garbage plate out there. I need that thing on MONROE AVE, baby! Dogtown isn't open late enough to cater to the last call bar exodus, but their plate is head and shoulders above anything else in the area. It has just enough of that "slop-factor" to make it authentic, but you can tell it was thrown together by someone who knows how to fry dem taters right. read more
