Overall we had a great experience at Doke Sushi largely because the food was sooo good. We are vegetarians and have limited options in Murphys but I noticed some veggie sushi rolls listed on the menu and some curries/noodle dishes so decided to try it. Some things to note, highly encourage reservation ahead of time. We got there an hour before closing on a Sunday and even though there was a table open they almost didn't seat us. It is small on the inside with limited tables so I would not say it's great for groups. They stop serving about 30 minutes before the posted closing time and don't make exceptions. We ended up ordering a Jenni role which had tofu/cream cheese/cucumber inside and avocado/panko/doke sauce outside and it was seriously amazing. Although there were only two veggie roll options on the menu I could easily eat two of this roll alone. Things only got better with the curry. I assumed the curry was going to be Japanese style, but they are actually more thai style yellow and panang curry options. Unfortunately the Udon and Ramen dishes are not vegetarian as they are made with fish broth. But the yellow curry was perhaps the best yellow curry we've ever had (and we are a bit of curry snobs). The sauce was lighter than a traditional thai yellow curry and it had a delicious sweet finish. The veggies were tasty and fresh. When we come back to Murphys I will certainly be going for this curry again. I do wish they had a few more vegetarian options, but very glad the ones they do are outstanding. read more

Always a little skeptical about sushi in a landlocked town but Doke is actually very solid! Quick review since I'm on vacation but: Chef special: really good! Great assortment of fish and the sauce splatter is gorgeous. Poseidon roll: our favorite! This roll was really tasty and all the elements worked well together. Negihama - generous cuts but maybe it's out of season as it was a little lacking. Service was attentive and prompt and the food came out quickly. The food was surprisingly good for being the only sushi place in town so overall I'm happy it exists. I'll definitely try to stop by again!! read more

While walking through Murphys I saw a restaurant I never expected to find in downtown Murphys, Doke Sushi. My daughter in-law and granddaughter daughter love sushi, so we thought what the heck?? I didn't expect much, but the place was very clean. The menu was sufficient and we each ordered something different. No complaints from anyone and the consensus was thumbs up all the way around. Where do I start? This place took me out of retirement from yelping. This review is heavy on customer service (or the lack of) and the food. There were 7 if us today. 4 adults and 3 kids. The kids ordered the chicken udon bowls. The adults had chicken karaage, 2 bentos and a few rolls. Chicken karaage- these were literally Tyson chicken strips. They were gross and nothing like how real karaage is at the Japanese restaurant. Do not recommend. Bento box- tempura batter was heavy, but decent. The chicken teriyaki was basically 4 pieces of boiled chicken stir fried with veggies. Wouldn't called traditional teriyaki. Salad was good and California roll was as expected. Udon- again with the boiled chicken, veggies and noodles. The broth wasn't awful but super sweet. Rolls- I didn't have them but my Sister in law said it was mid. Now on to the service. The server acted like she didn't want to be at work. Didn't check on our water, we had to remind her to bring out the extra bowl, and she just wasn't pleasant. I overheard the server that it was an additional $3 to split the bill for the table next to us which is ridiculous. I don't know how this place has this many stars. The restaurant consisted of 1 hostess/server, a sushi chef and a cook. The food was incredible. The poke crisps were *chefs kiss* I could have eaten the whole order myself. The Big Trees & Dragon Roll were our parties top 2 rolls followed by the Caterpillar Roll. The sushi was top notch and excellent quality. 10/10 would reccomend. We will definitely be back. We finally got in. After walking past this place for years, last Friday I poked my head and noticed they were not too busy so I was able to get a reservation. We started out with the Poke Crisps as recommended and they were really good. We both ordered hand rolls and those were good as well. For our main roll we got The chefs choice roll and it was delicious. The restroom looked clean. This restaurant is small. However we could hear the conversation clearly from the first table and the table two away. If you want to have a private convo, best to take it elsewhere. read more

This place has lost its soul! We ate There tonight . We had to make a reservation at 6:15 because there were two of us and a large service dog. We ordered a mixed tempura with shrimp. Fresh and crispy! The asparagus was tough and chewy. They brought the orders of spicy tuna hand rolls and the crab hand roll without avocado. Two small hand rolls for each order. Good flavor but sadly lacking. We ordered a cali roll and a spider roll. Again tasty but overall bland! Had a large Japanese asahi beer and a bottle of filtered sake. Again nothing special! The food is delicious, and you're probably wondering "why only 3 stars?" Unfortunately the service is lackluster and the server is really holding back this restaurant. Originally I contemplated leaving this review, because when it's busy, I get it. HOWEVER, our sushi sat at the counter for quite sometime, and when it was brought to us, they also brought a sushi roll we did not order. We told them they could take it back, but they declined saying it had already touched the table. I mean, at this point I guess there's no point in wasting it. However I don't think we should have been charged for something we didn't order and willingly told them we didn't order it. Outstanding Sushi and service! Although very small in size, which can make getting a table challenging at times, this restaurant is one of the best I have ever experienced in Murphy's or elsewhere. Food is fresh, tasty, inventive and fairly priced for the quality. The spicy edamame is not to be missed. The tempura is crispy and not oily. The roles are creative and large. Long overdue 5 star review, as we've been eating here for a few years now and have only had great experiences. As a self-appointed sushi snob, I can tell pretty quickly and within the first bite whether it's quality sushi, or better served in a mall's food court - and this place passes that test and then some! Fresh ingredients, amazing flavors, great ambiance, killer music, and friendly staff. What more could you ask for? Sure they book up pretty quickly and can be a little stringent on timing, but if you've eaten anywhere else at the caliber of this place, it's to be expected to a certain degree. Doke is by far the best sushi within a 50 mile radius, and I'd put it on par with some of the best sushi I've ever had - and that includes amazing restaurants along the coast, Bay Area, Hawaii, etc. Do yourself a favor and stop by Doke next time you're in the area. I' ve been here a handful of times. Me and my friends enjoy getting a bite here, every time we visit Murphys. The music playing is always different genre every time, ( which we love)! The service is great we always get the same Hawaiian server, Aioli. She is always working hard, and still delivers great service. We have visited for lunch and dinner and the menu is the same. Dinner seems to be busier so definitely make a reservation. I do agree, with other reviews, that seating at bar is quicker service, they tend to prioritize bar before tables. The Karage Chicken, I had on Saturday for lunch sitting at the bar seating and Me and my friends returned for dinner on Sunday. Dinner consisted of Calaveras Roll, Aidan's Roll, chicken Ramen and chicken Bento Box. Definitely come check Doke Sushi out if your in Murphys. read more

Delicious dinner with the wife here. Got the karage chicken and 4 different rolls. The chicken was amazing, never had it served before with the onion tempura around it. Stopped by this spot on our way into the state park. Despite getting here at 12:00 when they opened on a Sunday, the food didn't arrive until 12:48. Note that none of staff are wearing masks (but most people in the town were not wearing masks) and I heard coughs coming from the kitchen..yikes! Our party of four ordered a teriyaki chicken bowl, a bento box, udon, and a caterpillar roll. The caterpillar roll came out first and the presentation was quite nice. However, for a $12 sushi roll, I was hoping there would be more eel. It seemed like there was more imitation crab than eel. The udon was quite disappointing. It had carrots, broccoli, onions, and shrimp, but the shrimp and the noodles tasted like they came from the refrigerated section of a supermarket. The broth was extremely salty, I'm almost convinced they used soy sauce and water for the broth. For $12, wouldn't be my first pick. As for the teriyaki chicken bowl, the chicken was extremely dry and did not have any flavor. The bento box came with a few pieces of sushi, tempura, and also rice with teriyaki beef. Unfortunately, the beef was not very flavored as well and was also quite dry. Overall, the food was edible but definitely not worth it for the price we paid (I pay similar prices in the Bay Area for much better tasting food). My son (he's 11) and I found this gem while looking for a place to eat in Murphys. I was skeptical since we are a long way from the ocean, but this place was delicious! We started with the garlic edamame, which was really good. Then the shrimp and ahi sashimi. My son has never had either, but we both loved it! He had the chef's choice roll, which was awesome and I had the firecracker roll, which was amazing! Decently priced, too. We will most definitely be back the next time we are up this way! read more

Murphy's, CA Legitimate! Small sushi restaurant owned and operated by a man who spent time in Japan learning about the cuisine. We were seriously questioning our visit when we saw the non Japanese Sushi Chef, but boy he did not let us down! They make all of their own sauces, everything was so fresh and fantastic! Probably, one of the best sushi roll's I have ever eaten, we came back for this again the next day : 5 stars Chef's Special $15 Yellowtail, Tuna, Eel, on top of a shrimp tempura roll with homemade spicy and eel sauce, a work of art and so beautiful to look at but even better to eat! 5 stars Unagi Melt in your mouth, so delicious. The Chef left for the night as we were there near to closing, but his assistant prepared this beautifully. 3 stars Veggie Tempura. Not my favorite and would not order again. I got the California roll. It was delicious that I had to order a double it's small inside, but it's cute. And very nice staff.

We went for a birthday dinner. My girlfriend has Celiacs, and this is one of the rare places to do gluten-free tempura and sushi rolls. We started off with the gluten-free tempura, and they brought out her own sauce free of soy. We then ordered a few rolls(Big Trees Rolls,Caterpillar Roll,Murphys Roll,Spicy Tuna Roll,Dragon Roll), and the waitress went out of her way to make a GF Doke sauce that tasted great. We had a great meal and a great time with the attention to care to our needs. The fish is always fresh, and the food is always quickly to your table after ordering. The orders were incorrect and slow to the point that one of the guests had to get their order to go. The checks were presented incorrectly. Sake was delivered without glasses and meals were missing items. Music needs to be adjusted to the level of comfortable conversation and the disco music doesn't fit the ambience. Too bad we won't be back because the food is good. Recommend ordering "to go" if you brave this place. read more

Wouldn't recommend the spicy edamame - it's been hit and miss ( soggy) each time I've ordered so it's easier to just stick to fish The place is teenie tiny so show up early if you want a seat!! Leaving 4 stars because although the food is great and the employees friendly, the service from the waitress is lacking - it's hard to enjoy a meal when food and cutlery is forgotten, you don't get checked up on, and you have a crowd of people waiting to sit down but can't leave because the waitress never comes with the check. The food itself is pretty good. We made a reservation and arrived 15 min early. Was told we'd be seated in about 10 minutes, but it ended up taking 20. Not a big deal. By the time we got our actual food, after the appetizer came, it took around 25 minutes. From the time we were supposed to be seated until we got our dinner was about 45 minutes. Not the fastest service. We ordered a kids teriyaki chicken bowl and they brought us the adult version which is spicy and has grilled onions. Our kid wasn't interested in it. They offered to make the kids version. We also ordered the seared tuna. It was pretty good but we were expecting the included "salad" to be lettuce based with more of a miso or sesame dressing. Instead it was seaweed salad, which isn't something everyone gets down with (like the person who ordered it...lol). The rice was below room temperature and was expected to be at least warm. The seared tuna was good with a tasty sweet dipping sauce. One of the four poke crisps was a little short on tuna, again not a big deal, but just throwing it out there because it was very noticeable. We also ordered some miso soup and a couple of rolls. All of which tasted great...No complaints there. The place is noisy and cramped. There are 6-7 tables with a few spots at the sushi bar. It seemed they were focused on cranking out to go orders, but put the actual patrons' orders on hold. There were two waitresses and four guys in the kitchen, two of whom appeared to be making the sushi. A very lackluster dinner which was topped off by being charged twice for a roll I ordered once (they fixed it). The short, younger, brunette waitress was very friendly, I must say. Kudos to her for at least putting on a smile. Please either get more chefs, speed up production or simplify your offerings to get things out quicker. The faster you turn tables over, the more money you'll make. But if you don't care about profits or making customers wait less, then I guess keep doing what you're doing. This is the only sushi around for miles so if you want it, expect an hour long or more dining experience on a Saturday night. But again....the food IS good. read more

This place makes good sushi. We eat there every few months and love it. But this time I was ordering takeout and the experience was just awful. I was in town so I arrived 30 minutes before opening so I could get my sushi made before the first seating. The chef saw me sitting outside while he was smoking a cig before opening. Two minutes before opening I stood up in front of the door. When 5:00 hit, I saw one of the servers answering the phone and writing down a takeout order without first letting folks in. So I called and the other server picked up. I told her I was outside looking in at takeout orders being called in when I've been waiting 30 minutes to place mine. They wouldn't have known my situation of course, so when they let folks in 2 minutes later, I explained my situation and told them the chef would recognize me as having been waiting. That's where everything fell apart. They would not talk to the chef, and they told me I'd have to wait 30 minutes to get my order. I said that doesn't make sense since I'm the 2nd order of the night. She wouldn't budge; she wouldn't try to make it good; she wouldn't apologize--just silence. When I came in to check on my order 30 minutes later, everyone seated already had sushi rolls and mine weren't made. I saw the silent server go in back FINALLY and the rolls came out five minutes later. She had asked if I wanted ginger and wasabi. I said yes. When I opened them at home, there was none. Plus the rolls were put together in a huge box and one of them was upside down and totally undone when I got home. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this place for to-go orders at all. Just stick to dining there in person when you have the time to deal with the poor service. read more

The staff is friendly and helpful. We started out with 2 appetizers. (I wish I got a pic of the plates before we devoured them) Pepperfin Plate and Poke Crisps. We just had a really bad experience about this place. No smile or greeting since we walked in. The place was full so we sat at the bar. The server did not even explain the menu or asked if we were visiting or locals. I felt like I was rushed to order. I was asking what a tako (octopus) is and the server said "octopus". Yes, I can read but how is it cooked or served? Other tables were served with water in a glass and we were never offered water. I have to ask for water and we were served with water in plastic cups. The sushi came out and no ginger or wasabi came with it. No small plates given, so we just ate our order in the serving dish. My son had a meal but no kiddie cutleries given. My son had to use his hands to eat his rice. No one came over to ask how our food was until we finished everything and they handed us the bill. No "thank you" or "have a nice day" when we left.
