This is my boyfriends absolute favorite Chinese food. Last night we dined in and the family greeted us as family as they always do. We were seated promptly and provided menus. We usually get the same thing when we go - just change up the apps. Last night as the weather was cold and rainy, we ordered some Egg Flower Soup. It was delicious! We also ordered some egg rolls & pot stickers. The restaurant was empty when we went in as it was close to closing time. There is a old saloon vibe in here, I do love that they kept all the old brands on the walls. For our main course we got the SPK plates which are their specials plates that includes BBQ Pork Fried Rice, Chow Mein, Sweet & Sour Pork & Fried Prawns. Horrible customer service that you can barely understand. They are so rude especially the lady that answers the phone. Don't even deal with the frustration and go somewhere else. They even advertise that they are a nightclub and they're not. The interior is nasty dirty old and stinks too. I was just trying to get a lunch combination to be picked up and they couldn't even figure that out. Even though they're advertising on their website, one thing on the menu, they're saying on the phone that it's not included and that I would have to pay extra. Talk about false advertising! If you're crossing the Sonora Pass (Route 108), the town of Sonora is your last stop for any decent selection of food and reasonably priced gas, so be sure to fill up your tummy and your tank before making the 2-hour-long expedition. We ordered a seafood sizzling plate, beef chow mein, and Westlake beef soup. The portions were moderate and the dishes were lightly seasoned and not overly salty. I am so very happy that my son took us to dinner here tonight! We found it by chance headed home from getting gas. This is a family owned place, husband cooking and wife caring for the customers. The service was friendly, fast, and attentive. Our drinks were kept full, empty plates quickly removed, and the place was spotless. We started with wontons and chicken salad. They were both delicious! Fresh and plenty to feed the three of us ... could have easily feed four. We especially liked the chicken on the salad - it was tender and crispy! It could have had more chicken, but the prices are very reasonable compared to other places, so we were very satisfied. For dinner we shared the Mongolian beef, honey walnut shrimp and orange chicken with a large side order of steamed rice. The shrimp were large, crispy, and tossed in just the right amount of sauce. The Mongolian beef was different that any we've had, but very tender and delicious! I recommend you order with no cabbage bed unless you prefer it with the entree. Finally, the orange chicken was crispy and tender. The sauce tasted homemade and very much like orange. This is definitely our new go-to for Chinese! I called in for a shrimp with lobster sauce and was asked if I just wanted the entree or the dinner plate for $4 more. Decided to just do the entree. Upon walking in was informed that rice doesn't come with the entree and was charged $2 more. Owner didn't bother to tell me when ordering I should just get the dinner plate for another two dollars AND it comes with a soup and egg roll. Tried to amend my order but she was on the phone. Worst part of all was the food. $17 and exactly SIX shrimp. Almost no sauce but truck loads of various veggies that by any rights do not belong in a shrimp with lobster sauce. So the shrimp with lobster sauce was basically a vegetable soup minus the broth. Avoid this place. Total ripoff read more

Hong Kong Garden was great especially considering it was Christmas Day! Because they were so busy from it being Christmas, the wait was a little longer than originally expected (we ordered over the phone) but the food was delicious. The tofu and eggplant clay pot had a great sauce and the beef broccoli had a substantial amount of broccoli. The spicy salt chicken (i.e. salt and pepper chicken) was great - they had the spicy jalapeno/chili/fried garlic mix on top! The honey walnut shrimp were great (no shells on the shrimp, since another review had complained about that) and the chow mein portion was huge! Overall, solid food that really hit the spot while we were staying in Columbia. The portions were all really big; everything in the picture lasted 2 adults 2 separate meals, so 4 total meals. We also came back the next day and got a Hong Kong style milk tea. I was just impressed that they actually had bubble tea - it wasn't too sweet and the pearl were very soft (maybe too soft for some). Today my husband ordered the Mongolian beef with chow mein. Maybe it's how they make it and others like it but it was dreadful. It's made in a tomato sauce and is hot and sweet and was dumped on top of the chow mein so my husband couldn't eat that either. I tasted it in case I liked it and wanted to take it home for later but realized it was the worst food I've tasted. It was baaaaad! Just terrible. Food was cold, even though it came in batches, and absolutely tasteless. The chicken paper thing is revolting, to say the least, and the chow fun was severely lacking sauce. Majority of food was left on the plate barely touched. Service was slow, we waited a long time to order and to get a check. Never even asked if we're enjoying anything, which we weren't. The place itself is sticky and gross, not even in a homey way, but in a neglectful way. Insanely hot inside with the air conditioning hardly compensating for it. I'm a local who likes Chinese food and I come here pretty often. There are some better Chinese restaurants in the Central Valley, but this place is as good as many of them. I'll tell you that it's the best Chinese restaurant in the Mother Lode region. It's especially good for lunch. Prices are low, the dishes are more than satisfactory and they don't stuff you with lots of noodles or rice. You get a good meal for what you pay. Used to be a frequent customer and loved going here till they took away most of the seafood and soups. Staff also doesn't seem to enjoy their customers like they used to as s well. And we had to wait 45 minutes for 2 items we ordered because we wanted to leave but didn't want to insult the staff. We didn't have time to go anywhere else after and it was frustrating to watching them make and give orders to people who called in and yet they didn't bring anything out to us or the other customers till they finished their to go orders which took a very long time. I understand they needed to get to go orders out but there were people there that were waiting an hour or longer for their food and they had been there before us. Been looking for the right Chinese restaurant and finally found it hidden on Washington street. Vast menu makes your mouth water while reading it. Tried the crab cheese puffs to start and went with the won ton soup. I use won tons as an indicator and these were pretty darn good. The broth was clear and very tasty, another indication of good authentic Chinese cooking. The price points were very reasonable. I will go back there soon! read more

My parents arrived in Sonora one day before us and raved about Hong Kong Garden so much they almost returned here with us the following night for dinner. We actually ended up waiting two extra days before returning instead, and they ordered the same exact meal again. My family is all about the old school set Chinese menu and they got the cheapest one for $11 which includes wonton soup, veggie eggrolls, and three entrees (one per person ordering), Sweet and Sour Pork, Mongolian Beef, and Almond Chicken. Before my husband and I ate here with them my family talked about how the Sweet and Sour Pork was superb. I have trouble trusting anyone's judgment who orders Sweet and Sour Pork, so initially when they suggested this place I had my doubts. While my family had their repeat order, my husband and I got the Sizzling Chicken and Garlic plate ($8) and the Chicken with Basil ($8). Both dishes were good but a bit on the bland side. The sauces actually were quite similar. if I were to return I'd choose some dishes that were spicy, since I felt like the spicing of the food was generally toned down. The chicken quality had been talked up, but it was still dark meat chicken, albeit the good kind. (There are three times of chicken meat in Chinese restaurants: 1) white meat, 2) fatty and weird dark meat, and 3) good dark meat.) We paid an extra $2 for rice, soup, and veggie eggrolls to accompany our meals. The veggie eggrolls were good and not too greasy. I don't care for hot and sour soup but the husband liked his. For some reason they wouldn't let me sub it out for the wonton soup that came with the set meal. I tried my family's soup and they were correct in raving about it. (My dad proclaimed it the best part of his meal.) The broth had a nice subtle kick. The people who worked at Hong Kong Garden were really nice and recognized my familiy from a few days before. They brought us a plate of Orange Chicken, which we didn't order and confused us for several minutes. We asked about it and the servers didn't seem to know why we had it. Eventually one came over and said it was a gift from the chef for the New Year. It seemed more like a dish that was misdelivered to us instead of another table, but it was nice of them all the same. The Orange Chicken - lightly fried chicken in a sweet orange sauce - ended up being the best entree we tried. Overall, it was pretty good. If I lived in Sonora I'd definitely go back. read more
