Found this gem in this area. Passing by before heading home. Craving sushi last night and didn't make it on time. So now here we are at this place. Servers are very tentative and always on the look out. Has many man power which is great for business. Interior design is dim and cozy. Good with groups but very limited space because the place is small but plenty of seatings. I ordered my usual appetizers age dashi tofu and ika wakame which it's delish. Not ordered 5 sushi rolls. I been coming here for a few years now. The food has always been good never been disappointed, however, our to go sushi rolls are the California or shrimp tempura & few other cooked plates. Place nice and clean. Now service it's a hit and miss sometimes take forever check on you after you get your meal, but overall they not bad. Still our favorite Japanese spot. Whenever we are in the area we decide to go here. We all ordered the bento boxes for lunch. Of course, I had to get my favorite which is the salmon teriyaki. We also decided to try out one of their sushi rolls. I forgot what kind of sushi roll my dad ordered but it tasted good. Ripon-We've eaten here twice now and both times it has been phenomenal! The menu has a ton of items and I could go back every single day just to try something new! The Zennou roll had the most amazing house dressing on it! I tried to ask exactly what it was and she just kept telling me it was house dressing so I gave it a shot. Kind of tasted like garlic, mayo, but thinned out quite a bit. Very yummy. Friends had the Manteca Roll, 49'er Roll, and Smoked Salmon Nigiri along with Hamachi Nigiri. Everything was very fresh and the rolls were huge. The only negative was that the Manteca Roll was supposed to be "three peppers" hot but was not hot at all. read more

Went again after my grandson's water polo game. He loved it. I had the chicken teriyaki bento box and it was plenty of food. Good stuff. My wife had the tempura shrimp and vegetables. This is her go-to plate here and she really enjoyed it. Grandson had the crunchy California roll. He gave it a two thumbs up! The service is excellent, and the place is clean. We came in the evening during the week last week and it was packed. We had to wait for a little bit. Ordered three rolls and it was good for a sushi place in Central CA. I would def skip the Manteca or Modesto roll (one with Mango in it). Too much sauce. The atmosphere was nice for a dinner out. We visit Masumi quite often these days. We most recently visited in January 2025 on a Wednesday night. It wasn't too busy and we were promptly seated at any table we wanted. We opted for a booth in the back. It was dimly lit and the group of people who were there seemed a bit noisy. We sat down and our drink order was taken almost immediately. We had a minute to look over the menu and ordered a short while later. We started with an order of Edamame. I ordered the Rainbow Roll and Tokyo Roll. Wife ordered the Dragon Roll and an order of Pork Fried Rice. The Edamame isn't steamed or anything so if you don't want it spicy or anything, prepare for chilled Edamame. I always prefer mine to be steamed or warm. The Rainbow Roll didn't taste as fresh as it normally does, so I didn't like this one as much this time. The Tokyo Roll was absolutely phenomenal. It comes with cream cheese that just takes it to the next level. Very good and I'll definitely be getting it again. Wife said the Dragon roll was excellent. The Pork Fried Rice was good. Called before arriving because it was a half hour until their posted closing time. We were advised to "order quickly" after arrival - no problem. The decor is great and the place is very clean. A message was sent back from the kitchen that they had "run out" of miso soup which was part of our bento boxes - no substitute offered or adjusting of price, just a "sorry but they only make a small amount". Our food arrived quickly after that, first the salad, then the boxes. The boxes were composed of Japanese/Chinese style components: fried egg rolls, shrimp & veggie tempura in a heavier Chinese style batter (which was good but not Japanese style), what appeared to be a very quickly prepared spicy (not) tuna roll (very loose, uncompressed), chicken katsu & sauce, tuna sashimi (large portion), and sushi rice. The staff commenced cleaning although we were eating....mopping, vacuuming (yes, right next to us!), and talking and laughing loudly. We were there for less than an hour. Overall pretty good. The rolls were gigantic. My son loved their California roll and he ate up the edamame. I could not finish my roll. I ordered to-go for pick-up as I was visiting from out of town for a soccer tournament nearby. I would say to call ahead and order as right when it opened a bunch of people came. Let me preface by saying this review is based on a Bento box during lunchtime and not any sushi. Saw this Japanese restaurant and decided to stop in for lunch. Ordered the Bento box with Saba shioyaki , which came with miso soup, 4 pieces of California roll, rice and salad. Service was quick even though the place was busy. I was hoping to find a yummy Japanese place near home but the flavor just wasn't there. The California roll was on the larger side, but contained a lot of rice. The Miso soup wasn't salty which is a plus; however, it contained only the tiniest of bits of tofu and two dime sized pieces of seaweed, all I could taste, was the sliced green onion on top. My salad was way under dressed with hardly any dressing. Overheard the table next to me complaining that they didn't get any dressing and heard them ask the waitress for two sides of dressing. And finally my Saba shiit consisted of two small pieces of fish that were very fishy smelling. The Hubbs said that's what I get for ordering bait! I was really looking forward to trying this place for the first time since the reviews were fairly good, but my experience didn't meet my expectations. I ordered the 49'er roll because of the fresh lemon on top, but the rind wasn't peeled, which made it practically inedible. When I asked if I could switch it out for a simpler roll, I was told that once a roll is served it can't be switched. That was surprising and a reflection of poor customer service. The rolls themselves also seemed a bit off in proportion, with a lot more rice than filling, and the tempura shrimp in one of them tasted stale. For the $60+ price point, I was hoping for better quality and service. Definitely never returning again. read more

We came here on a Saturday night and it was packed! Fortunately, turn over was pretty quick since the food doesn't take extremely long to come out. The staff here are very friendly and attentive despite the busy crowd. My group and I ordered so many rolls that I've honestly lost track. My top 2 were the colony roll and zennou roll. The former is more flavorful, and the latter, less so. Hot tip: if you can handle a spicy kick, order the hot lips for your appetizer! I didn't see it on the menu but it was recommend by regulars. This place is amateur hour. Two chop sticks and 2 forks at the table of four. Exactly 4 napkins. Asked for more napkins and brought 3 single ply napkins. No wasabi and ginger for 3 orders of sushi without asking? Never came by to ask if we wanted more tea or drinks. Seemed like I was pestering for simple stuff. Don't order the chicken salad . It is NOT a Chinese chicken salad. It's bag salad with, hot bland chicken served with miso dressing even though the menu says vinegar dressing. Can't over exaggerate bland. And mimics something I could do at home. Not sure how this place rates so high, this is a 2 star place. And that is generous. The volcano sushi plate is humorous. It's so covered in tempura crust and seasoned mayo you can't see the sushi. I wouldn't go back ever. Should have known with 2 tables seated at 1 pm. Menus were wet and stuck together. And it's outdated interior. Bathroom was the cleaned part of this place. Sorry I'm all for small biz but this is a miss. read more

I first want to call out that my pictures below do not do the food justice. I ordered our New Years Eve dinner early and brought it home to enjoy later. Enjoy is the right word. This was our first time here. Our friends said that we should go and try this place since we love Sushi. We ordered a little to much but will enjoy it tomorrow too. I ordered some staples like Spicy Tuna Roll, California Roll, Salmon Skin Roll. These are very nice sized rolls and made very well - no scrimping on ingredients. We also ordered the Golden Gate Roll (very good) Spicy Girl Roll (a little different with almonds but really tasty) and a Pink Panther Roll (which was a really big roll but delicious) I also added their Chicken Salad to start (being honest it was ok but I could have skipped it although I am a sucker for a good Chicken Salad) and one of my favorites, an order of Nigiri Unagi. Next time we will go and eat at the restaurant but either way if you want good Sushi - friendly and welcoming staff please visit. read more

If you've never been here, definitely give it a try! It was our first time trying this spot. The bento box serves a good portion, even though it appears smaller in pictures. The teriyaki chicken had great flavor. The bbq beef rib was okay; great flavor but more chewy. Their side salad was delicious and the miso soup was nice to have while waiting on our meals. The noodles stir fry dish was delicious! The San Francisco rolls weren't as warm as we expected but it was good. Love this place! We used to live close by and was the first place where I tried sushi. My fav is the Ripon Roll. The scallops, shrimp, sauce on these rolls is high addicting. Their bento boxes are so good as well. Love the chicken terriyaki and California roll. The salad dressing on the salad is also very good. Miso soup is a great start as well. The food was delicious, and was made for an American audience - so expect creative sushi rolls designed for locals. The service was excellent, and they kept checking with us even though the evening was busy. The ambiance was pleasant as well. When I walked in, I couldn't tell if I was in a Japanese, Chinese or Vietnamese restaurant! The owner has decided to take a chance at all three cuisines in one stop! I was there for sushi and really hungry, so decided to go for it anyway. The restaurant gives you those 'unclean' vibes and against my better judgement, I ordered! For the first time in my life, I ate sushi that tasted like Vietnamese food ! Trust me, I love Vietnamese food, but I don't want sushi that tastes like other cuisines. I could tell the restaurant owner doesn't really know much about sushi and he or she is probably Vietnamese. The rolls were awful and tasted stale as if ingredients had been sitting around in the fridge for a while... the flies were buzzing around too! Long story short, around two hours later, I got sick and got the runs! Sorry for the TMI! But these people are NOT clean and they don't even know what cuisine they are serving you... there's way too much going on there and I can tell it's all about making money. I will never go back there and simply can't recommend this place to anyone mainly because I got sick after eating their food. read more
