The best rum cake I've had, and was a hit at a recent holiday party.

This guy advertise that his cakes are GOURMET and that the Italian Butter Rum cake is grandmas' recipe. What a bunch of bull crap! Truth be told - these recipes came from and off of the Pillsbury Cake mix box that he uses. What a liar! Over priced non-gourmet cakes - shame on you. The product is tasty but the truth is it's not gourmet! The recipes are not from his grandmother, aunt or whomever the owner, Chris Monachelli, states. Also, please be aware that the cakes are not as fresh as he states. I've over heard customers at the different Farmers markets I shop at complain that the cakes they purchased were stale and dry. He places ALL the "Old" (possibly 4 days old) in the front and keeps the freshly baked cakes (if you're lucky) in the bins for last. He also states that it will keep 4 - 5 days on your counter top. WARNING: That's a cream cheese filling sitting under a hot tent throughout the market day with no refrigeration. Get my drift? Always check the colored dots on the labels. read more

I blame Dolce Monachelli's Italian Butter Rum Cake for the 10 lbs. I had to lose last Christmas. I wish I was kidding. Sadly, they are THAT good and as previous peeps have admitted to, their cakes are incredibly addictive. On 9/8/2013 my son and I went to the Irvine Great Park Farmers Market. After walking around and getting to try free samples of the different vendors, I proceeded to walk back up to a vendor whom I purchased a dip from earlier and he was holding for me in the cooler until my son and I were done looking around. As we approached the vendor next to him was a women holding out a sample with a piece of pound cake on it and said free sample, I then took the sample and stuck it in my mouth. The pound cake was soaked in something I could not pin point until it was too late and heard the women ask a man and his son who walked up if the sample was for himself or his child.. I was not asked that question and this raised an eyebrow. I asked the women what kind of cake she had given me and she then told me it was their Italian Rum, I asked If there was actual alcohol in it and she said yes.. My heart dropped!! I am a recovering alcoholic and have been sober for 4 1/2 yrs. and as part of my recovery I don't even use mouthwash that has alcohol or Nyquil etc...I asked the women why didn't she ask me if I wanted that, knowing she had other cakes for samples without the alcohol, and that I'm a recovering alcoholic?? She just gave me a look with a kind of shrug and continued passing out these samples... I got no kind of an apology or any remorse from this woman at all... I walked away in complete tears and throughout the day continued to feel sick to my stomach, nauseous, and crying. For me this was a very traumatic experience. read more

I went online on a Wednesday evening and ordered a cake for a good friend's birthday to be delivered on Saturday. The cost of the cake was $23.00 which I thought was pretty reasonable. I'm a baker, myself so I know what things should cost. I was a bit shocked at the delivery charge since it was a local delivery. The cost for Fedex delivery was $19.00!! Just $4.00 less than the cake itself. But I decided to go ahead with it since I didn't have time to bake that week. Saturday evening, I called to wish my friend happy birthday. She never received the cake. I placed a call to the bakery, but it was 5:30 and it was closed. I did leave a message, never heard back. I called on Monday and left another message, nothing. I emailed them, nothing. On Tuesday I called again and finally got an answer. Supposedly it was their manager. I believe her name was Vanessa (not sure). I explained what happened. She made all kinds of excuses and tried to tell me I didn't order it until after they closed on Friday. The money was taken out of my account on Wednesday evening! She never apologized. She finally did tell me she was sending a new cake and she would credit my money back. She did send the cake, but never gave me my money back. Very poor service! OMG these were the best cakes EVER. I tried the gluten free and I never had a moist gluten free cake like the one they have prepared. I would love to see the Italian rum cake become gluten free. We also tried the Italian run cake and that was the best combination !!! More gluten free options please!! read more

If I could give this company a 0 rating, I would. Never in my life have I been so disgusting from poor customer service. I've been going to the Torrance farmers market for quite a while. Every once in a while, I'll let my kids have a sample of this companies bundt cakes. It's never been a problem up until 3 weeks ago. My kids politely ("can I please have a sample?") went up and asked for a sample (there was a huge bucket of samples), representative from this company had the nerve to tell my kids that they have no manners and refused to give them any. He was sternly saying "you need to learn manners before I'll give you anything". I reported it to the farmers market manager and they said they dealt with it. Well again today we had a very negative experience with another person representing them. As my kids walked up, he abruptly blurted out "only kids accompanied with adults who sample are allowed to have one". While I respect that companies have their own policies and policies do change, I do not respect poor customer service and treating kids in such a way is a horrible example of customer service. Someone walking by at the same time said "well I guess you don't want my business" and the representative blurted out "you're right I don't need your business". While the cakes are good, they are extremely overpriced and something I could find elsewhere, accompany that fact with the horrible customer service that has been displayed, makes this company less than desirable to purchase from. read more

It is December 31st and not only did no one in my family receive the cakes, the company hasn't returned my phone calls. I have left 3 messages and an email. It's too bad because I LOVE these cakes and you are so nice at the Farmers Markets. Please refund my money. read more

The cakes are delicious, but their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I ordered two cakes on a Wednesday to be sent to Colorado, they still have not arrived as the following Friday. I called and they said they would call me back-nothing. I've left several messages, still no response. They won't answer their phone. Just had a sample of their Italian wedding bundt. I was excited to run into this stand at the Farmer's Market, because it had been on my bookmark list for awhile. The cake was moist - almost too wet IMO. The flavor was ok but somewhat artificial. I think it was the texture and wetness that I wasn't a fan of, so it didn't make me want to buy one to eat. Don't order for delivery if you are counting on their word. I wanted to surprise a colleague at work and they delivery ran 2+++ hours late. The staff enjoyed them but the recipient sure didn't. I was also promised an email receipt as I was ordering from out of state and that never came either until I called back again to request it. Customer Service??? read more

I bought 4 of these after I tried a sample bite at the San Pedro Farmer's Market last Friday and was blown away. I tried the Italian Butter Rum, so I bought two of those, and two of the Stevia Carrot. I should have bought 100 of the Italian Butter Rum. They are amazing. Seriously this was the best tiny cake I ever had. I don't think they will make it home from work. I bought them at a Kaiser Farmer's Market today and WOW!! The lady there was super friendly and nice. The sample she provided one that was thawed. She said they freeze for 6 months. It was delicious, would have never known if she didn't tell me. The berry is to die for!! read more

They always sample the Butter Rum cake for a reason...It's their only flavor that's any good! They're always at my local farmer's market, talking customers up by saying they make "The Best Cake in the World!!" and when you try their Butter Rum you agree, it's good. We love their Italian Rum Cake, but every year when we order for shipment for Christmas, it's a fiasco. They are late with the order or lose it altogether. Last year, they delivered the cakes personally to our house on Christmas Eve, after our party, because they forgot to ship them. This year, sadly, they just skipped out on us all together. I started calling three weeks ago and finally after multiple calls, got a person to answer and take my order (including my credit card), and then the order didn't arrive. I followed up last Thursday and someone answered the phone and said she would pull my order and call me right back. Guess what? No call back and no rum cakes for our Christmas party tomorrow. This is definitely not the way to run a business. Don't rely on them to get you cakes on time. If you can pick them up yourself, it's worth it. The cake is great. But apparently they are trying to disappoint customers and not grow outside their brick and mortar walls. I'll make a note for the future. read more

NEVER PLACE A SHIPPING ORDER FROM THIS COMPANY! I ordered a rum cake to be shipped to my parents this Christmas (2015). After numerous, unreturned calls to their number listed on their website, I ordered online on December 17th. I paid $30.44 for 2-day shipping(understandable since this IS a food item and needs to be fresh) + the cake which was $25. This cake was not received until December 29th! I had my Mom refuse/return the shipment of this now moldy cake. I have proof from Fed Ex that it was received back by Dolce Monachellis. I have left 5 phone messages, sent 2 emails & have sent a demand letter stating I deserve a full refund; no response back whatsoever. I don't know if they had a backlog of orders to bake or if Fed Ex was late with their shipping but I don't care. I paid $30.44 for 2-day shipping to get a fresh cake and $25 for the cake. I will be going to the O.C. small claims court next & they will be paying the court costs also. A professionally managed business would acknowledge their mistakes and make good with their customer by a refund for services not rendered. It's a shame because they do have good products. read more

I first tasted their cakes at the Great Park swap meet. The cakes are good, not the best I've ever had but good; however, they are not reliable with shipping. I ordered for the first time about a year ago and the cake was to be shipped out of state. There was a mishap which delayed the shipping; however, I understand that things happen and the cake eventually got there so all was well. This year, I planned to order some cakes as Christmas gifts for out of state family. When I tried to call them I received a recording that the number was no longer in service ... odd ... so I emailed to see if they were still in business. I received a response back stating that they had moved and providing a new phone number. I had a couple of additional correspondences via email to find out flavors, when would the order need to be placed in order to receive by Christmas, etc. I emailed my order and asked for someone to call me so I could provide my credit card number. Nothing. A couple of days later, I emailed again ... still no response. I'm now getting close to the deadline for ordering with Christmas delivery so I called. Voice mail is full. Tried to call again the next day, voice mail still full. Emailed again; no reply. By this time you would think I'd find them somewhat unreliable and come up with a plan B for my gift recipients but noooooo ... I tried to call again and FINALLY someone answered. I explained that I had emailed and called, trying to reach them for days and she explained that there had been a problem with their kitchen but all was fixed and they could guarantee my orders would be received by Christmas. She sounded a bit rushed, like it wasn't a good time for her to take my order, but she assured me that I would receive a call back within an hour; and then she went on to say if not within an hour then for sure by the end of the day. I explained that these were Christmas gifts and told her that if there was going to be a problem with making or shipping the cakes in time, I would need to know so that I could come up with another gift idea and she assured me that there would be no problem and that they would contact me back that day. Well, that was several days ago and still no contact. Poor customer service for sure! Looks like overall on Yelp they have gotten good reviews; however, my experience has been that they are not reliable and I would not order from them again. read more
