UPDATE: After about five emails and complaints, they sent me an email saying they would reimburse me the extra amount they charged me. It took a lot of extra assertiveness, but they eventually honored their original price. Still won't use them unless I have to in the future, but them finally responding and caring has made me less of an anti-Dollar-Car-Evangelist. Original Review: Terrible, terrible experience. They didn't have the car I reserved. Had to take a giant SUV that I wasn't comfortable driving and used half again the amount of gas. They didn't keep to the amount I quoted. They didn't explain that they were adding extra charges. Said I would pay $84. Charged me $181. Called and complained, and they told me it was my fault, and that next time I should ask more questions of the desk staff. read more

I get there the gentleman said we need the card to put a hold on it for the rental car that's fine that is what they do. He was looking in the system and said I found a better car for you for 110.45. Wellllllllll this is just a poorly run business which is not fair to the frontline workers or customers. Evidently, every Monday there is not a cleaner staffed at the Terminal 2 (Humphrey Terminal) location. Since cars need to be ferried from Terminal 1 to satisfy reservations, this ongoing problem is just one of many delays stretching wait times beyond 90 mins. My fellow stranded customers and I all had longstanding reservations so it's not like we weren't expected. Of course, no compensation was offered. With all the negative reviews and overall rating for Dollar Car Rental consistently on Yelp, they don't exactly leave the best impression. But my husband and I have rented a car with Dollar Car Rental this past June when we were visiting Seattle, Wa and had a good overall experience. So when the time came to rent a car on our most recent trip to Minneapolis last month, my husband ended up choosing Dollar Car Rental again because they were the cheapest for car rentals. This Dollar Car Rental is conveniently located across the street from the terminal, so after you get off the plane and maybe even pick up your bags downstairs in the baggage claim, you can just walk a short distance across the street to pick up your rental. We (my husband, our little girl dog and I) arrived here on a Sunday afternoon, around 1:05 pm. No one else was in line and we were helped by the employee at the front Desk. Everything was pretty easy since we had made the reservation on line ahead of time and then were out the door, walking towards the area where Dollar Car Rental keeps their cars. Once we found our car, parked in its designated parking spot (that is numbered), we were out on the road soon after. All this took less than 30 minutes. Upon returning our car, we had no problems. Typically with both experiences with Dollar Car Rental so far, the company requires that you have a gas receipt to show that you filled up the tank of gas. When we were in Seattle, the employee at the check out area kept the receipt. However when we turned in our car here, the employee didn't ask to see the receipt, even when my husband said he had one. And with this experience and our experience in Seattle, we did not have any miscellaneous charges or hidden fees added to our credit card a day or a week (or even a month) after returning the car. So for the most part, we have had a pretty positive experience with this car rental company and hope that if we need to rent another car with them again in the future, they will still provide the same service for us. read more

They were closed at 7:30pm on a Friday night, when their website stated they were open until midnight. I was left stranded at the airport after reserving a car, and their 1-800 customer service line was a nonstop loop of useless information. There was no way to speak to anyone, and after having to rent another car through another company - and paying several hundred dollars more - I tried to register my complaint. Employees were slow, but patient. It took me two hours to get my rental car. This was due to Dollar only having one employee work the front desk. As well as Dollar not having my vehicle ready and at the location where I reserved it. Dollar also charged me more money after I reserved my vehicle with a third party company. So I'd you're looking to use a discount with any third party, don't bother because you will get charged more regardless. All and all, this place wasted so much time on my vacation, it's not worth the cheaper rates. Update, via my third party. I was supposed to pay the additional 91 and change. Worst car rental experience I have ever had, and terrible customer service, seemingly designed to make it incredibly painful to get a refund... EVEN WHEN THEY DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE THE CAR YOU RENTED! I reserved a rental vehicle a month before my trip, and when I arrived at the reservation time, they didn't have my rental vehicle - or any other vehicle to substitute. They told me it would be at least 3-4 hours, and there were about a dozen people ahead of me. They required prepayment, so they had my money, and wouldn't refund me at the counter. So, I called the customer service line, which had me wait for 40 MINUTES until getting to talk to a human, who then told me they couldn't refund me, but that Hotwire would have to because I booked through them. Sooo... I called Hotwire, who I got through to in a few mins, but they had to confirm with Dollar that I hadn't actually picked up the car before getting the refund... I had to wait ANOTHER 40 MINUTES for Hotwire customer service to get an answer from Dollar. I was stunned that apparently Hotwire doesn't get priority in Dollar's terrible customer queue. Eventually, Hotwire processed the refund - but the abysmal experience because of Dollar means I will NEVER rent from them again, and I highly recommend you don't either. read more

DO NOT RENT FROM DOLLAR!!! Please heed my (and the other reviewers') warning that this company is a complete scam. I rented a car for 1 day to drive from the DSM airport to the Minneapolis airport on Dec 26th. My initial rate was given as a charge of $67/day totaling $88 with taxes and fees. All was going well and I returned the car to the Minneapolis St Paul airport as stated on my rental return by following the traffic signs for rental car return at the airport. Later that day I received an invoice from Dollar stating I'd been charged a total of $147 - or an excess of $60 from what was agreed upon!! Countless calls and hours were then spent on the phone with "customer service" (what service???) and unmet promises to have a supervisor call me back resulted in no resolutions. They even hung up on me 3 times! The line to the supervisor rang for 10 minutes before someone picked up and hung up the line. Truly awful! Now I'm out $60 plus valuable time. Please do yourself a favor and don't rent from here. A few more dollars spent with a reputable company will save you money and hours of time in the long run. read more

My experience with Dollar was a nightmare from booking to trip end. We arrived in Minneapolis July 7th and waited 20 minutes for a Dollar representative. There was no one there. I finally asked The Hertz rep to help us. He said he could. We had our Priceline confirmation paper work in hand yet he wrote up another contract. We thought it might be different, he said it would be resolved at the end of the trip. So far two weeks later, it isn't resolved! We are double billed. On the second day of our trip, the Mazda SUV didn't start. Even after a boost, it kept on stalling. We were told we had to exchange it back at the airport. It was a malfunction of the parking brake and was forced to drive a car that was unsafe back to the airport. We were treated very rudely by an employee at Terminal 1. She said rudely there were no cars to exchange and we had to bring it back to Terminal 2. When we got back to Terminal 2, Aron was very helpful. At that point the car wouldn't start at all. We were very late for the family reunion planned for us. When we returned the car to the airport everyone was too busy to resolve the double billing. I've spent countless hours on the phone with Dollar. They said they would have a Dollar supervisor call me back. No one has called. I've called Priceline and American Express. They were much more helpful but my problem has yet to be resolved. I've sent a 3 page letter to corporate with copies of contracts, Priceline confirmation and my bill from American Express. Still no response. If I could give no stars, I would. I have noticed that the reviews have no response. Companies that care, respond and apologize. Save yourself time and rent a car with someone else. We rented a car from Dollar at MSP and it was a terrible experience. Our flight was great, but as soon as we got to the rental car area we sensed a problem. We were about the 8-9th person in line which means we were in for at least an hour wait. We started hearing mumblings that there were no cars available but nobody from the business had told us anything. After at least an hour of waiting we finally got to the front of the line and we're told "you know there is a 2 hour wait for a car". I replied with no we weren't sure because nobody told us. We only heard mumblings of people that were ahead of us. Nobody from the business advised us of any issues. After getting to the front of the line and finding this out I turned to the 10-12 people behind us and relayed the message since nobody from Dollar had the nerve. After waiting an hour we were ultimately told we could wait a few more hours or just leave and our reservation would be cancelled. Unfortunately we had to wait at least an hour to find this out because no announcement was made to those waiting. Ultimately we went to Ace Rent a car because they actually had cars available and were friendly. It took us about 10 minutes to complete the entire process there. read more

After one hour and 8 people later, we made it to the counter. After our reservation confirmation, we had to wsit over an hour and half more to actually get a rental. There is only "1" person at the dollar/thrifty/hertz counter and only "1" person to retrieve-clean and prep rental. the counter guy is super nice but I would quit if I worked for such a piss poor company,, the person who schedules employees should be FIRED and I should get my money back! read more

Picked up our car at MSP Terminal 1 (Lindbergh). Quoted $28/day. Not bad, right? Got our bill to find we were charged $146/day because we "dropped it off at a different location." Um... excuse me? We followed the blue signs for Rental Car Return, which brings you to Terminal 2 (Humphrey). According to Dollar, these are two different addresses, despite both of them being at the MSP Airport. THIS IS A SCAM! Looking at the reviews, others have had had this same problem with Dollar. Called customer service. Loooong wait time. Our service rep, Fatima, was belligerent and said this was entirely our fault. There was nothing she could do because we "returned it to a different location." Folks, it's all the same airport. Opened up Yelp to make a review and saw one in a half stars. That's what I get. Showed up in Humphrey terminal to pick up car. Reception stand was closed. Asked to go to parking garage by one sign. Finally arrived to hold members Hertz and she said they had no cars at this sight it will be 30 to 1 hour. She sent most of the people to other terminal after they walked to the garage. About ten people since I've been here 65 minutes waiting for a car I hope arrives. I'd give a one but I'm hoping beyond hope I get a car soon. read more

Prepaid a reservation, flew into Saint Paul and went to the dollar counter. The line was outrageous and they only had 2 people working. After standing in line for an hour and a half, I was told that the car would not be ready for another hour. I had a meeting scheduled 15 mins away and had to move my meeting to wait on a car. What is the point of a reservation? 30 mins after my reserved time and had to sit around with 20 other people waiting for a car. If you are renting from this company and planning on using toll roads you should Google - Dollar Rental Fine. They charge a $15 administrative fee for EACH toll you go through, and collect up to $90 for each trip. So my $.60 cent toll in IL cost $15.60. Additional charges that I did not agree to. I booked a car through Priceline that outlined the charges etc. When I returned the car the final bill was much higher. I had additional Limited Damage Waiver and other charges tacked on. These were on the checkout when I took the car. I did not look closely and just assumed that the original agreement with Priceline covered it. The statement that I got said that I accepted these charges on checkout. I was not informed of them and never accepted them. I just did not pay close enough attention, after a long flight and tiring day. Unwisely I assumed that my initial agreement adequately covered the charges. If you rent from Dollar, be sure to check very closely the additional damage waiver etc *before* taking the car. Awful customer service. Paid for brand new tire and never reimbursed me. Was suppose to get Ford Fusion but saw that car pulling out as I walked into parking garage to it's spot so they put us in a Dodge Challenger (4people) while on the road our tire blew out. Pulled over and wires were showing. Called the roadside assistance number multiple times and after waiting 40min on the line hung up and called auto service near me. Auto service put new tire on for $340 later. Informed rental company of all this with picture to prove of the arugula tire they sent us out on and stated they can not reimburse me. Poor poor poor. Had a reservation for a mini van - called the company a few days before to confirm which terminal the reservation was for. The lady on the phone told me either one, and I questioned it, nope, she assured me that either terminal was just fine. She also let me know that my husband could stop in at any time, on his own, and be added to the reservation. Arriving at check in, the gentleman tells me that it's twice the cost because I'm at the wrong terminal for pick up. He was courteous and adjusted the price to what I was quoted. Then he let me know that my husband would have to park the car and come on because we both had to be present at the time to add him. He parked the car, came in - we didn't want to have to pay for parking at the airport. Turns out he was already in their system and didn't need to be present at all. Got outside to get the mini van - no mini vans. The gentlemen offered me other options but the point in renting the mini van was for the cargo and people space. The options they offered either didn't hold enough people out not enough luggage space. Both gentlemen assisting me were both very courteous offering coffee and water while I waited. And as soon as I rejected their alternate offers, the manager was on the phone with the other terminal demanding the send a van immediately. The reason for one star is simple - communication. Your employees should have knowledge of terminals at airports and know the answer to the question. If you are unsure, ask someone else for clarification. Don't give wrong info to your customers - not only is it wasting my time, but also your employee's time. read more

Dollar Rent-A-Car did not honor the price we agreed to for a rental car from Hotwire nor did they honor the car type that we were promised this was a special event weekend that ended up on a sour note. We were promised a luxury car (Cadillac ATS )at $74 and we received a number of excuses and then offered another deal for a luxury vehicle (Mustang Convertible)but rather than paying the difference they doubled the charges by adding the two charges together when we got back to the station. In addition they charged us 999 a gallon rather than marking down that I requested the fill up at the end of the rental. I'm surprise this is a Hertz company and very disappointed with my rental. I will not use dollar in the future and it looks like a number of other people on both yelp and other social media would likely do the same. Paying almost $600 for two days for a rental is ludicrous and they don't seem to have the common sense to make an adjustment rather than have an email war with the customer and ruin the brand read more

We rented a vehicle from them last week and after we loaded everything in to the van we went to pull out of the parking garage and were told we could not rent this van due to it had already been sold. So my family and I waited 45 minutes for them to pull up another van that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. We were in a hurry so we accepted this vehicle and were told we would receive a $100 credit for the inconvenience. A few days later we returned the van and did not receive the credit for the inconvenience. So I called dollars horrible customer service department and was told that they could not help us out. I asked to talk to a supervisor and was told one would call me back in 2 hours. No call back so the next day I called and asked to talk to a supervisor again. The customer service rep told me the supervisor did not want to talk to me and that there was nothing they could do to help us. Left car back 30 August. Ahmed in the office in the car park had very poor english. Dollar staff had put on the record that my car was swapped due to "both license plates stolen". Ahmed kept asking me what this meant. Hard to answer that. Kinda obvious. Then when he had to phone colleagues he kept asking what that meant. Took about 30 mins to get away. Dollar is the worst rental experience I have ever had! The car was filthy when I picked it up and smelled horribly of cigarette smell. While we are dealing with COVID businesses need to be cognit of cleanliness. Once I returned it ONE TIME, they charged me for another day, fuel and additional fees. The issue is there was a vehicle blocking the entrance to return vehicles and they were actually being parked on the ramp entrance at the airport. I reached out several times and was told "we are looking into this" NOTHING has been done and I have not been contacted and no resolution.
