I normally don't write reviews but I would love to give Dolphin Bay a 5 stars review! - I just moved to Boston and I'm so glad I found this place. Food here isn't just good, it reminds me of home a lot. Really authentic. If you're looking for Taiwanese food, this is the place where you should go! There's another reason why I make this post. The services. The owner and staffs are super friendly. You can tell they're treating their customers sincerely. Great hospitality makes a business successful. I definitely recommend you guys to come and eat! p.s. If there's a line when you go to this place, don't leave right away, people eat fast, you'll get a seat soon. 3.25 Stars Busy place, looks like a regular tea cafe serving drinks and food. The menu had lots of options - small eats, stirfry, rice, noodles, soups, noodle soups, juices, slushes, milk teas and teas. I would say the dishes I tried were decent, there was authentic Taiwanese flavor to them, but I wouldn't say great. The beef noodle soup had a nice salty, good flavor to the broth...I enjoyed drinking the soup. The noodles itself I think are the dried box kind which can be cooked in a few mins. Noodles and bok choy pieces were decent. The oyster pancake came covered in sauce, a sweet sauce with some soy paste added I think. The pancake had the desired slick, stretchy texture but was on the tough side. Fresher oysters, more vegetables and egg in the pancake would have made it better. The spicy wontons were okay. I've had much better. The wonton peel needed to be slicker and the meat filling needs more flavor. The dolphin bay milk tea was a tad too sweet but was actually good enough to drink. Needed more tea flavor though. The taro milk was my favorite item. Sweet and with little bits of taro. Chunks of taro would have been better but this was still the best item. It's so difficult to find good Taiwanese food in the US that some Taiwanese flavor is better than none. Oh...the waiter's manner was very...perky. read more

My go to Taiwanese restaurant in Boston has always been Blue Asia but I wanted to check out Dolphin Bay with my friend who was visiting out of town. We ordered: spicy wontons, popcorn chicken, crispy chicken cutlet, minced pork rice, and beef noodle soup to share between 3 people. The spicy wontons and minced pork rice were my favorites. The popcorn chicken and crispy chicken cutlet were ok but a little dry. The beef noodle soup was tasty but I wish the broth was more savory and that there was more beef. We also got a giant shaved ice with: condensed milk, fresh taro, red beans, and pudding ($9.99 for 4 toppings). Although it was really good we were already stuffed and could only finish half of it. Everything was good but I think I would still choose Blue Asia over Dolphin Bay. I'm round up from 3.5 stars because I thought the decor was funny/cute! read more

Overall, this place is ok. Spicy beef noodle soup- I feel like this dish is a hit or miss. When you order, the staff will ask how spicy you like it. Personally, I always ask for spicy. It is not so bad where you won't be able to taste anything. The first time I had this dish, it was so good. Everything about it was perfection. The second time, however, there was just something missing from the soup. I felt like it needed something to add a umami flavor? Popcorn chicken- for the price (i think around $5?), this is a pretty good deal. The portion for an appetizer was quite generous. It was more batter than chicken though and I thought it was ok. Spicy wonton-You must order this dish if you come here! Even though it's supposed to be spicy, it is not at all. Not even a tiny bit. It is still very good. The sauce reminds me a bit of ponzu sauce and chili oil, whatever it is, I make a point to drench my wontons in it. Shaved ice- order one for the table, you won't regret it. You will get very cold from eating this, so bring a sweater! It sounds silly but I was shivering trying to eat this during the summer time, but i'm also temperature sensitive! I think all the sweet bean varieties, the grass jelly, and lychee jelly are great, minus the mango. Please don't order the mango, it's canned mango and it doesn't taste that great. When I ordered it, it wasn't exactly mango season, so maybe this will change come summer? I would just not order it, or ask them if its fresh. Service is excellent! read more

I've been here a couple times. They weren't bad. But came back recently and was pretty disappointed in everything. The popcorn chickens are already all pre-done and it came out cold. Beef noodle soup was mediocre, would definitely not go back for. The shaved ice is not "shaved" ice. It's basically crushed ice with mediocre toppings. Definitely not worth what they charge for. Good food and great service! Came here for lunch with my friend who is a regular here. I got the popcorn chicken very spicy and the plum tea, since my friend had recommended I try those. The vegetables that came with the popcorn chicken were cooked well, the popcorn chicken itself was crunchy, and they didn't let me down with the spice level. Excellent authentic Taiwanese food. The beef noodle soup is the best one I've ever had in Massachusetts. There were equal portions of beef shank and tendon. We ALWAYS get the popcorn chicken whenever we come here. The shaved ice is just ok - it's more like crushed ice. A true shaved ice is airy and light. You can tell the mango they put on the shaved ice is from a jar bought at Costco. Other than that, their food is DELICIOUS. I always imagined that if you were invited to your Taiwanese friend's place for dinner, this is what his/her mom would make for you. Steamed egg is only served on certain days during the week. Parking is difficult because the restaurant is right on Brighton Ave. It gets crowded around dinner time. To sum it up, get the beef noodle soup...medium spicy!!! You won't regret it! read more

I was craving some Taiwanese food so I came her with my friends. I ordered a beef noodle with jalapeño gravy and shared two popcorn chicken with my friends. The rice dishes and appetizers were good but my noodle dish was not good at all. I can cook better stir-fry noodle than the one they served me! It tasted very bland, the beef had no flavor, and it didn't look that appetizing. I had to dump sriracha sauce over it in order to make it more edible. I tried my friend's fried pork chop rice dish and I thought the pork chop was fried perfectly. The breeding was crunchy and the pork was moist and tender. The popcorn chicken was on point! It reminded me of LA. They were seasoned well. I liked the chili powder and sweet and sour sauce. The server that served us was really nice. She was very polite. If you come here, stick with the rice dishes and popcorn chicken! read more

Went here with a friend to grab a bite to eat for dinner on a weeknight. It was around 8pm, so there was a bit of a crowd, but we were able to be seated right away. To start, we decided to get an order of the spicy wontons. These were excellent as they had great flavor and just the right amount of spiciness to them. They were so good that we had to order a second helping. We also split an order of the pork rice and the chicken with rice. The pork rice did not look like anything special, but the flavor was decent. The chicken was cooked well and the breading had a great taste as it was coated with a delicious mix of spices. This restaurant comes as advertised here on yelp. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are very large. The food is very good, certainly a step above your standard college meal, and won't break your bank. The restaurant itself is a bit odd, with the boat as the counter and dolphins and Palm trees on the walls, but it certainly makes it unique. The staff was friendly and they work hard serving a usually packed restaurant. I recommend going closer to 6 and you'll miss the huge rush- which I've seen there usually is here around 7pm. What really makes this place great though are their drinks. We had their tea and it was awesome. The cold drinks look great too. Definitely something to hit up in summer. read more

This used to be one of my favorite Taiwanese places in Boston. However, the service has significantly gotten worse in recent years. The past few times I have been there they either forgot my orders or took forever to serve my foods. I'm not sure if it's because they are understaffed but I expected a better dinning experience which doesn't require me to check in with the waitress multiple times only to find out they missed one of my orders. It's easy to go any where else, with all the bubble tea places already stationed in the area, but my friend knew this place just opened up. Came here because of the rave reviews and because I was on a bubble tea kick for the majority of June. The lady was incredibly sweet and welcoming so I really wanted to love it. If you like Kung Fu tea or any of the other boba shops in the area, DO NOT COME HERE. You will be disappointed as it doesn't taste similar at all. Ordered a regular milk tea and literally threw it out as soon as we found the nearest trashcan. I think they may use honey to sweeten because it's more "natural" but it just didn't work for me. AT ALL. Honey flavored boba is good, honey as a sweetener is NOT. Prices are 50 cents more than the competition which I assume is because they try to use organic where possible. That said, the food and shaved ice look promising--just avoid the bubble tea! PRO TIP: they have samples of a variety of teas at the front. Don't make the same mistake we did and think that the milk teas would taste any different. read more

LOVE!! I have had nothing but a great experience eating at Dolphin Bay. Walking in, you are immediately greeted by a friendly, kind staff, delicious smells from the kitchen, and happy customers. I go to Dolphin Bay at least once a week and I am never disappointed by the service or the food. What makes me happiest is that the restaurant emulates home because the business is family-run and hires friendly, genuine, college students that are always excited to be at work. They put great effort into making their customers happy and because I am a regular, they remember my order down to the finest detail. Some of my favorite dishes/drinks are the spicy wonton noodles, the ham fried rice, the popcorn chicken rice, and the iced green tea! First, the pluses. 5 stars for price, cleanliness, and amazing, amazing, service. Now for the downsides: the food. I've been here twice, and was entirely unimpressed both times. - Crispy chicken, popcorn chicken, crispy pork were all bland, with slimy, soggy layers. Signature salt/pepper seasoning for these dishes were lacking. - Side dishes for above mains were odd and didn't go with the rest of the meal. Some kind of bland potato stew, broccoli, and other vegetables. - Oyster pancake had huge sections of slime (way too much cornstarch), and despite sharing the dish among 5 people, only 2 of us ate one oyster each. - Beef noodle was bad. Soup had no body and minimal flavor, and sharp twangs of chili padi. I love spicy food, but this spice didn't meld into the soup. Frankly I've had better soups from instant noodles. - Spicy wonton was okay but not memorable. Many macabre jokes about the food were exchanged over the meal, but it was gastronomically a poor experience. Would not recommend, and would try very hard to convince friends not to go if asked. read more

Came here on a Monday night. The place only had one table when we walked in. It took over 50 mins for us to get our food as the kitchen seems to make ALL the take out order first even it was placed after us! 30 mins past and still no sign of good. When the kitchen finally started making food for dine in customers, it's made in random order. Not in the order people ordered. To top of an already not so good experience, half of our party got the food while the other 3 people waited another 10-15 mins. This is my go-to Asian place in the Boston area! I always get the pork knuckle dish because it's so good. I like the steamed egg that is sometimes available (wish it could be always available). And the taro milk is also tasty because of the real taro!! I used to like the mango milk but I got over it; the first sips would be good, but then it would develop a weird aftertaste. Ohgawd Dolphin Bay. This place hands down had the worst patbingsoo (shaved ice) I've ever had. No exaggeration. Coming here actually made for a pretty fun night though. A couple of my friends and I were craving shaved ice and one of them mentioned that Dolphin Bay had great shaved ice (we later found out he had never been there himself...). We headed over and ordered one to split. I am absolutely positive that every item in it was from a can. Each strawberry and mango was mushy with cloyingly sweet syrup. The beans also had this weird taste that I won't even try to describe (probably due to its can origins). I wouldn't be surprised if their ice even came from a can. Now on to the funny part. By know you probably assumed that we just threw it away after a bite or two, right? Not exactly what happened.. Sure, we were trashing on the dish the whole time we were there, but still devoured it all. Pretty sure any other Korean person would have just thrown it away, but that's just not how we roll (and that's also why we are fat). This is my go to place when I crave home made Taiwanese food. There are so many delicious choices. Some of my favorite dishes are popcorn chicken, pork rice with a braised egg, spicy wonton, braised pig feet, beef noodle soup, Taiwanese sausage, Taiwanese sausage fried rice and stir fried udon. The wonton is freshly made in house. My new love is Jalapeño gravy rice which can be either mild, medium or hot. For a drink I always order taro coconut with mini tapioca because it's made with real natural taro. The staff personalize my drink by adjusting the amount of sugar or add-ins to my liking. If you like mango, they also offer delicious mango juice or slush with fresh mango. The service is just as phenomenal as the food. The wait staff is friendly, smiling and helpful.
