What a gem! The chef is literally an 80-something Taiwanese grandmother and it is a small, family-run business. Their prices are reasonable for this type of homestyle fare, so you have no reason to give your money to a big chain owned by fat cats! ;) On weekends, the wait for table seating can be an hour-plus but there is a reason for this. We ordered popcorn chicken to start and devoured our bowls of soup: chicken and braised beef. Mine was the latter and I ended up ordering additional noodles and Chinese veggies so the delicious broth would not go to waste! My side order of noodles was a healthy portion. I also tried the pork wontons and we finished off our meal with the sesame seed "appetizer" balls (4 small pieces: 2 skewers with 2 each). Dine-in seating is limited but what they have is clean and simple. The complementary jasmine and green hot tea is delicious. Andy served us and was attentive and affable. I can't count the number of times I've walked right past Grandma's Kitchen on my way to the nearby mochi spot, but I am so incredibly glad we finally decided to step inside! The wait here is always a surefire sign of how delicious the food is going to be, and it completely lives up to the anticipation. We ordered both the Grandma's chicken noodle soup and the braised beef soup, and they were equally incredible. The broths are so comforting, and you can instantly tell that the noodles are fresh and completely homemade. We also tried the minced meat and the fried cod--both were definitely good, just not quite the standouts compared to those phenomenal noodle bowls. On the drink side, I got to try Taiwanese root beer for the first time. It was a really interesting find--way lighter and much more refreshing than the American version, and it's officially on my radar to grab whenever I see it now. Just a heads up for weekend visitors: their fresh-made drinks are unfortunately only available during the weekdays. The staff here is incredibly friendly and works so hard. Even with a constant line of people waiting, they meticulously sweep and clean between customers to ensure the entire space is spotless--they even thoroughly wipe down the menus! While it's not necessarily a spot I'd travel more than 30 minutes for, it is an absolute gem if you're in the area. I will definitely be eating here again! read more

Easily the early and far away favorite for best restaurant of 2026. Where do I begin? I came in on a Sunday night and was one of the last seated- luckily. As a family run restaurant , grandma and the rest of the family had a flight to catch to Taiwan the next day; all the ingredients are fresh to prep daily and sadly for some, they had to get turned away that night... I went heavy hitter mode, I was in the zone. I got the salt & pepper pork chop- wasn't going to eat the rice but as you can see from the pic below of the noodles- I licked the entire plate clean. This pork chop was perfectly seasoned and it was insanely tender. Very impressed with how tender and flavorful it was. Next up had the spicy wonton noodles; just truly amazing, idk what else to say. The noodles are perfectly cooked, super flavorful dish. The beef noodles were also incredible and the braised beef pieces stole the show in that bowl. I left zero room for any to go box. Service was amazing, they were super nice & I even got to say hello and compliment Grandma upon leaving. I would give this place 6 stars if I could. I will definitely be back soon! read more

A hidden gem in the Newton area. We ordered takeout from Grandma's kitchen and got the spicy wonton noodles and spicy beef noodle soup. Both were delicious and had the perfect kick of spice. Our food order was prepped quickly and ready for us when we arrived at the store. The only thing that could have made the experience better was that the portion of beef in the beef noodle soup was quite small. They do have short opening hours and limited number of seating, but we didn't have a problem getting a table a little after they open, and service was fast. The food was amazing here! We got there at around 6:30ish on a Saturday and we had to wait 30ish minutes, so we just visited a nearby bakery. I will say that it's not a great place for large groups, since they don't have a lot of space inside for seating. We ordered the wonton soup and the braised beef noodle soup and both were so fragrant and delicious. For their spice options, even the medium can be quite spicy so be cautious of that. Super casual dining experience, great for a quick bite. They also have take-out and boba that you can order and grab and go. They have a decent amount of space but not that many tables so we had to wait 15-20 mins even when we went on a random week day. However once we were seated the service was relatively quick. We just got the soft tofu for our baby (she loved it, ate almost all of it) and then we got two soups: beef noodle soup and the spicy wonton noodle soup. The broths on both the soups were very good and the portions were also decent! The wonton spice also had a nice kick to it, was not expecting that. Good flavor and juicy chicken bits. Some places make them too dry but not this place. We went with just mild hotness but I think you can get hot. Which would be equivalent to buffalo wings hot. The spicy wontons were small but comes with several. They are on the spicier side. So you'll need to get one if their speciality drinks too bring down the heat. Grandma's Kitchen is a small, casual place with really good food and friendly service. My cousin's husband was in town for ONE DAY, and we needed a place between Dedham and Arlington to have a meal together. Grandma's Kitchen came up as an option in Newton (which is apparently between the two locations), and we went for it! I called ahead, but they don't take reservations (like I said, it's casual!). When we arrived, the counter staff informed us that there was no ice (SO NO BOBA!), but we still wanted to try the food, so we stayed and bought canned/bottled drinks instead. Boy, am I glad we stayed! The food was not your average Chinese-American fare. I have never been to Taiwan, but I imagine this is authentic Taiwanese food. The rice was fluffy, the fried chicken wings were flavorful and crispy, the pork chops were PERFECTly seasoned and cooked, and the popcorn chicken was peppery, crispy, and I loved the addition of basil leaves. The fries were crispy, and the sauce on top was a nice touch. The braised beef noodle soup was so comforting, the wonton soup was spicy and delicious, and I am pretty sure Grandma's chicken noodle soup cured my husband's cold! Long story short: go to Grandma's Kitchen, and eat all the food! (Sorry, I can't comment on the BOBA, but if it's anything like the rest of what I experienced, I am sure it deserves a 10/10!). Kudos to them as they did it with a smile and were extra friendly. Everything was delicious. The salt and pepper pork was tender and well seasoned. My go-to beef noodle soup place! There is almost certainly a line for a seat, but it is well worth the wait. They will put your name on a waitlist and they have plenty of seating around to wait. The restaurant is clean and the seating is comfy. The service is very nice and all the staff are very attentive. I love the texture of the spicy wontons. Got the not spicy/no spice popcorn chicken and was still very flavorful just not spicy at all so good for kids but still very good. It's so good that we're thinking next time we'll try one with some spice even though no spice was also very good. Beef noodle dish is the most costly item in the menu and you can pick depending on size of short rib, but the price goes up just a few dollars depending on size of short rib between $29 and $31. The short rib was good and tender and the soup was flavorful with some kick and a little spice but not too much. Fish fillet and chicken cutlet rice was good too! Loved the fried mantou dessert. Authentic no-frills Taiwanese restaurant with homemade tasting dishes, just like the name itself. It only has 3/4 tables so the wait can be long (anywhere between 30mins to an hour). Got popcorn chicken, crispy fish fillet and minced pork rice as appetizers to share between the four of us. Everything tasted great and the cod was fried to perfection with perfect sauce to dip on the side. I got the beef noodle soup and the broth was a delight. The food here is amazing. I've been coming here once a week with my kids for over a year. I get the spicy wonton noodles (used to always get the beef noodle soup), while my kids devour the popcorn chicken, fried mantou, french fries and edamame (plus the bubble tea!). We finally tried Grandma's kitchen, that recently opened on Washington St in Newton. There are several new places that opened here and I tried 2 of the 3 that I know of (The empanada place and an asian bakery were the other 2). Decor and ambiance: This place looks very clean and the tables are laid out pretty spaciously, so I imagine dining in would be comfortable (space wise). Its bright inside. The problem I have is that its hot/humid inside. I went next door to the empanada place (cause of the very long wait for food) and they had sufficient air conditioning despite just the single worker being there. Grandma's restaurant had a few tables and several waiting on orders and the AC was way subpar for comfort. Imagine eating their hot noodle soup on a humid day like this...ugh. Service: Very friendly man who took our order over the phone and checked us out at the restaurant. Outside of the kitchen, it seemed like it was just this man and a very young girl acting as the waitress. She looked like maybe a 5th grader, definitely no more than an 8th grader. As its just a 2 person operation outside the kitchen, service was extremely slow. People dining in were waiting for food, and people ordering takeout were waiting on food. This leads me to think inside the kitchen is understaffed as well. I ordered a few appetizers and it took 35-40m wait on a friday around 6:30pm. Food and pricing: The food was very tasty and overall good. Everything had good flavor and just enough of it. However, everything tasted the same or very similar. Its like all the food is marinated in the same stuff, or deep fried in the same oiled with similar flavors. The chicken cutlet and salt & pepper pork chops and popcorn chicken and chicken wings all tasted the same to me. Pricing will look pretty attractive here, but note the portions are tiny. I got all appetizers and each item is barely shareable with another person. They have combo plates that cost a little more, but I think its likely the same quantity but they add a little minced pork, rice and veggie. The wings were very very small, so don't expect anything like korean fried chicken wings or even chicken wings in a pupu platter. They were very tasty though! Other thoughts: - Parking is easy, as there are plenty of street parking with meters outside and across the street. - Even if you order takeout, they charge for a paper bag. This is a first for me when ordering take out. I feel they should bake in the 25 cents or whatever into the cost and not make it a line item/option. I know its required by the city, but other take out restaurants don't ask if you want a bag...? - Food was good and I would've liked to give 3.5 stars, but thats not an option.
