Our favorites were the noodle dishes; the priciest dish we ordered was the medium sized salt cured clay pot duck dish was mostly rice, and there was also bone with the duck, making it tricky to trust the crusty rice was crusty rice and not duck bone with each bite. Service was excellent, would go back again. The ability to order off the QR code to see pictures associated with what you are ordering is also a plus! Menu in Chinese and English is another plus - especially those of us with family who are more fluent in Chinese than English. read more

Came by with a large party for a post-graduation celebration. Great service accommodated us, and even when our party expanded beyond the original amount. We ordered a TON of rice rolls, clay pot rice (had to since it's the namesake) and other sides. Staff were extremely friendly, made great suggestions, and even chatted with us as we were ordering. Food came out quickly, and was fantastic. I admittedly don't have a lot of experience here, so I'm not sure what the norm is, but from a pure enjoyment perspective, enjoyment was definitely high. Things are definitely a bit cramped but it doesn't feel like that, as the environment is very home-y, with a lot of natural lighting makes this a great environment for a great lunch out with the friends. Ordered takeout from here, and the experience had some hiccups. The restaurant was out of several items I wanted; fair enough but instead of managing it on their end, they left it for me to sort out. I had to cancel those items myself through customer service, which was a real hassle. I would've expected the merchant to handle that directly. As for the food, the honey BBQ pork was too sweet and dry, and the ribs didn't resemble the menu photo at all; also dry. The rice was decent and portion size was reasonable. It feels like this place has potential but could use some management tweaks. I genuinely hope they succeed, but based on this visit, I'd be hesitant to order again until things are more consistent. read more

Did early dinner to avoid crowds and find street parking. Service was excellent, staff very helpful & friendly and provide great recommendations on dishes. The rice clay pots take awhile to cook, to get the bottom rice crispy, well worth it, expect at least 30-45 mins. Photos from others on yelp looked great but mine came out very differently even I was showing photos of Yelp on my order. Chicken was cooked very long time before I came in to restaurant. I had clay pot rice back to back days so I can firmly say that Claypot Cafe has the best clay pot rice! The flavors are perfect and adding tea to get the crispy rice at the end was the best. They are doing a fresh coconut chicken soup in a Claypot now and it comes with a fresh coconut and chicken. It is paired with veggies, beef, and rice noodles. Their lemon tea is so refreshing also. Made a reservation online at Yelp and table was ready for us on a Friday night for 12 people! There's a QR code on the table to scan for menu and placing order. We got 3 clay pots - Chinese sausage/bacon, spareribs and minced beef w egg. All were delicious and my favorite is the beef since the egg added a nice texture to the rice. Pro tip is to not mix the rice at the bottom so you get a nice crispy rice in the end of the meal! Rice roll is good but didn't have enough sauce so felt dry. Yet another great meal once again unagi beef clay pot , mince beef, egg yolk clay pot, garlic with pea pod stems and choy sum with garlic, scallion pancake , salt and pepper chicken wings and lemon ice tea to was it down nicely service was quick and efficient as always and the ambiance was perfect. If you haven't tried it you better stop by and do it before you regret it. Perfect taste and ingredients just right. Came here with some friends after running a 5K in Allston. I ordered the salted chicken claypot rice, and overall it was pretty average. The rice to chicken ratio was off. By the end, I was left with half a bowl of plain rice. The chicken itself was tender and flavorful, but the portion was very small, and the meal wasn't filling at all. read more

Very traditional clay pot restaurant that you would expect in a real traditional restaurant. We got two types of clay pots with chicken and the pork both were very savory and very good but I do suggest asking for extra soy sauce. It's a sweet soy sauce that they gave you to pour over the rice they seasoned it, but maybe not to your liking but each bite reminded me of the way Grandma used to make it. For those of you for the first time checking it out careful they chop up the chicken, including the bones so eat slowly. We also got the rice noodles and chicken wings. Both were very good. I went to this place as we recently had amazing claypot rice in Toronto and wanted to try something more local to home. The videos on instagram made this place look really good, but I was sadly disappointed when I brought my family here. We tried a noodle dish, a rice roll, 2 clay pots and some wings. The food was just very meh. Flavors were just okay, nothing wowing or worthy of dining out for. Not sure if it was just an off night for them or what. This place is a little outside the heart of allston, towards super 88 side. Parking is possible but you may need to circle around a bit. Really delicious. The rice is perfectly cooked--it's not too hard, but the bottom rice is wonderfully crunchy. Each rice pot comes out piping hot. My favorite is the spare ribs--not too bony with nice flavor. The place is MUCH bigger and classier than their Chinatown location. I think it's perfect for bringing family or a friends to. The place is run by a couple of Asian aunties who were friendly. Unlike many restaurants these days, we were offered free complimentary hot tea, rather than water. read more

This was my first time trying Cantonese food and it did not disappoint! The ambiance of clay pot is a very classic Chinese mom and pop restaurant, it was very simple and casual. The menu is large with lots of different options. You have to advocate a bit for service, but our waitresses were super friendly! I split the shrimp rice noodles with friends which was classic and delicious - the noodles are soft and bouncy and wrap lots of shrimp! For my main dish I got the combo pork preserve claypot - I really liked the pork a lot. It was salty and savory, I think next time I would opt for only pork instead of the combo with other meats personally. Wouldn't recommend. The food is overpriced for the small portions you get. On top of that, they served us the wrong dish and tried to make us pay for it. When we caught the mistake on the bill, the staff tried to "compensate" us with a dessert rather than just giving us our money back. We had to push to get the bill corrected. My family and I went in for dinner on a Monday. The restaurant was not too busy, so we were seated immediately. There are QR codes on the table to be used for ordering purposes. We ordered the Mala Beef Tripe, Beef Brisket Noodle, Combo Preserved Pork Clay Rice, and Three Delight Chow Mei Fun. The food all arrived in a timely manner except the rice as that takes a bit longer to cook. Out of everything ordered, the best thing was probably the mala beef tripe. It is a cold appetizer but was seasoned very well. Everything else was mediocre. The beef brisket was tough and chewy making it far too unappetizing without much flavor. The noodles looked saucy and were overly cooked hence broken into multiple pieces. The Three Delight Chow Mei Fun came with very thin slices of chicken, ham, and beef. The sauce tasted fine, but we realized that the ham had gone bad. I do not know how restaurants can serve food without knowing that their ingredients went bad. For a spot called clay pot, their clay pot rice dish was extremely mediocre and disappointing. Each grain of rice was dry and broken down into small pieces. There is barely any flavor. The duck meat was overly salty, and the pork was overly fatty. With the price they are charging, you would expect bigger portions. Service was alright as they refill your tea, but I would never come back to eat here. Save your money to eat somewhere else for a more filling and tasty meal. read more

The clay pot is okay. I do like the concept, but the flavors are a little bland. We ordered the eel Clay pot and spare rib clay pot. Both came out piping hot and looked delicious. They both had onions, scallions, rice and a little hint of soy sauce. The eel tasted frozen and soft like mushrooms. It was moist and a bit chewy. The spare ribs was small in size and had more bones , then meat on it. We also got the curry fish balls , which was so tasteless and the curry sauce was watery. It was about $20 something for the meal. It's CASH ONLY and service was acceptable. Not sure, if I would come back . It's worth a shot. read more

The Allston location is much better than the Chinatown one. The restaurant is cleaner and functions like a well oiled machine. They offer some of the most authentic and unique HK or Cantonese style dishes in MA. A lot of the places in Chinatown are Americanized now but Clay Pot tries to really stick to actual dishes you would find overseas. read more

I got the preserved pork and chicken clay rice pot and shrimp rice noodles. It was too much food, but I planned to bring some home. The shrimp rice noodles were delicious and tender, seasoned with ginger and a light sauce. The whole dish was scrumptious. The clay pot contained pork belly, chicken and the slightly sweet Chinese sausage (lap cheong?). It was also delicious. The clay rice pot takes about 15 minutes to cook because it begins with raw rice, but that way the rice absorbs all the wonderful flavor from the stock. Staff are friendly and helpful. Service is friendly, and prices are reasonable. For two dishes (Hunan delight, string beans), one appetizer (spicy beef tripe) and a white rice, it totals $50 which is not bad for two persons.
