Our whole family loves Dominguez. At least one if not all of us order the #8 enchiladas. They are excellent. I even like the beans and rice, something I skip at other Mexican restaurants. Super retro 70s vibe, very small inside. Food is also very retro tex-mex-y vibes with some nods in a more authentic direction. I had the Puebla Enchiladas, but the mole was simple and broken. This is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in the S Mpls neighborhood. I always get the costa taquitos, which is the same as steak street tacos. They just have onions and cilantro added. The green avocado salsa they give you makes these tacos with a squeeze of lime. They don't have a liquor license so only beer and wine. Sometimes it's hard to find vegetarian options at Mexican restaurants, but I found plenty and they were all fantastic. Service was good. We can't for lunch so they weren't too busy. I had the steak fajitas for the lunch menu but when my order came out of was chicken instead of steak. The server was happy to remake. Three stay didn't have much flavor and it was full of butter. I like the chips and salsa. The kids nachos was disappointing looking at it was a couple chips with melted cheese for one order for one order and the offer one had ground beef with a little melted cheese on top. This is a small, rather cramped restaurant located near Lake Nokomis. Even though we had a reservation, it took a while to be seated as there are booths and only two tables that seat four each, but one of them was occupied by a single diner. (There is a large dining room in the lower level, but it was closed when 7 of us arrived for an early dinner.) Once seated, the homemade chips arrived fresh and warm, accompanied by a very mild salsa, which was only liquid; no chopped jalapeños, tomatoes or onions. A spicy salsa is available, but also without chopped veggies. Perhaps this style salsa comes from Cuernavaca, where the owners are from. From glowing reports by friends we were expecting food comparable to the complexity, sophistication and flavors of food we've come to expect and enjoy in Mexico. Such was not the case, which is why we were disappointed. That said, by the staple Mexican fare offered in the Twin Cities (burritos, rice and beans, tacos, etc., the Dominguez Family Restaurant is in the middle of the pack. The one outstanding item is their molé, which we we're told comes from a family recipe. It is quite good, and can be had on just about anything on the menu. The "tilapia salad" came in a taco salad tortilla bowl along with scoops of guacamole and chopped tomatoes, lettuce and a sprinkling of white (Mexican?) and yellow (American?) cheese. The fish was deep fried and rather disappointing. The caldo de cameron y pescado, or shrimp and fish soup, included potatoes, carrots, celery in a Mexican sauce called "Guaguillo". It was spicy and quite good. I would have preferred an order of tortillas to the grilled bread with which it was served. Those who had the fajitas with molé were pleased with their dinners. Rice and beans included. Mexican and American beers as well as marguerites are available. For something non-alcoholic and different, try a Jamaica, a sweetened hibiscus-flavored beverage. Should we return, it will be for lunch and I will sample more of the seafood items. read more

This is a cute little place with a nice atmosphere. Staff was nice abs helpful. The place is clean. Unfortunately the food leaves a lot to be desired. Store bought shells for the crispy tacos (so easy to make homemade which just elevated the flavor), carne asada drenched in cheese (what?), and carrots in the rice. Nothing was so horrible but I really wanted good Mexican. Ohhhh the Michelada was pretty good. I'd have another one of them. read more

An absolute gem of a place! I got the #8 (3 enchiladas, rice and beans) and had 2 margaritas. Just, wow! Flavorful & delicious! The place is a bit on the smaller side: cozy, comfortable, and nicely decorated. But y'all. Beyond everything I've mentioned, which was all incredible.. the best part was the staff. Such a welcoming experience, and Jose's laugh had my bestie and I in smiles through our entire meal. It truly felt like a family run business, and we were treated like a part of that family, too. Sweet, funny, and the service was fast. I am truly sad that we don't live in Minneapolis and that this may be our only experience here. Tucked away off the corner of 34th Ave S. & E. 50th St. is Dominguez and what a neighborhood gem! This place has a welcome feel that is cooking up authentic dishes. The Chicken Tacos are some of the best I've had in Minneapolis, no joke. The Shrimp Fajitas come out sizzlin' and tasty! The Chicken Fajita Enchiladas were super yum. A little too much molé sauce for my liking but I would order them again. Margaritas....ordered 2, it was hard not to get a third. The service was friendly and quick. TL;DR - workers were very nice and trying very hard, but wait times were really slow, and the prices were high. Food was good, not amazing. Long version - there are many places in Mpls and the "core urban" area to get tacos. Which makes sense and they are of course delicious. But if you're looking what I'll (maybe wrongly) call "suburban Tex-Mex" style, there aren't too many options. A place where you can get plates of food that come with refried beans and rice. D.F.R. is one such option, located in S Mpls. It's a small place, but it looks very nice on the outside. It has a large outdoor seating area that looks nice, but we got there later and it was too cold that night. The indoor seating was pretty busy, and has maybe 10-ish tables/booths of various sizes. There was an open table immediately available when we arrived. I wish I could say we were seated immediately, but that was not the case. The moral of this story is that there appeared to three total workers, two of which were cooking. They were woefully understaffed and/or slow. As in, making each dish from scratch? Was no prep done for the evening, at all? We don't know, but were trying to make sense of why it was taking 30-40mins for these dishes to come out. And they were bringing them out one at a time ... as soon as they were ready. When the food came, it was good. Nothing special, but what you'd expect at like a suburban Teresa's, which is what we were going for. The prices were about 50% too high, as well. Fajitas were $28, for example. Maybe I'm not with the inflation times correctly, but seems like they should've been closer to $20. read more

The ambiance was not like Minnesota at all; more like El Paso but with snow falling outside. There were about five customers when we arrived at 330 pm. It seemed bigger inside that from the street. Parking is very minimal but we were able to score a spot behind the restaurant. We were greeted immediately and chose a comfortable booth. Water and menus came quickly. Our server was attentive to my wife's desire for a vegan meal and even pointed out some of the sauces have chicken stock in them. They fixed her up with a veggie chimichanga and I took one beef and one chicken taco. The tacos came in soft tortillas and included sides of sour cream and avocados. Everything was delicious. This was a rare treat to get my refried beans hot, as was the Spanish rice. The only reason this isn't five stars is the restroom is not accessible, requiring a user to descend stairs. So I got out there quickly after eating. I suspect we'll return and will certainly recommend it to my more mobile friends. read more

I get these just about every time and I personally think they are done great. They are not greasy, they are not 'too stuffed' you get rice and beans with them, and salsa verde. Lunch time its a great value. 3. Shrimp Quesadilla. Fajita veggies and season grilled shrimp with juuuust enough cheese where you can say you ate your veggies for lunch. This is my go to when I know tomorrow would be an even better day if I had half of a left over shrimp quesadilla in the fridge. 4. Fajitas- i dont have a picture. But Im pretty sure everyone knows what happens- you get tortillas. They come sizzling on a plate. youre told not to touch it. you do anyways. you get burned. Smell like the best lunch you've had in a month and leave happy. 5. Cold day? not feeling well? Chicken Tortilla Soup. One of the most difficult cuisines for me to personally get excited about is Mexican. In the USA, we don't see the sophisticated Oaxacan, Yucatán menus often. What's left is poor execution of basic border Mexican cuisine, a horrendous thing when done wrongly. After sampling a simple enchilada plate, trying the beans and rice, and upon comparing this restaurant to most other Mexican places I've sampled over the last year, it proved far superior. The grease content is lower. The tastes are fresher and more varied. The subtlety in the sour cream execution, the quality of the rice and beans on their own merit, with their refusal to submerge the main course with inordinate cheese and grease--all make this place memorable and worthy of return visits. The beef in the enchilada seemed to be particularly well seasoned, a welcome change. The location is also great and the interior charming. My only suggestion is the salsa with the chips. My favorite authentic mexican restaurant in the state! I frequent this spot year round. The staff is amazing, and have such a great energy. I've gotten to know the different servers and cookd and they always make me feel like a friend when I arrive. I've never had to wait, not one time. For as great as the food is here, you'd expect a line out of the door. The decor is fun and upbeat! The tiling is beautiful, and the accents that sit atop the ledge over the tables are so fun. They have the best michealadas (my favorite alcoholic drink). The rim of the glass is specially salted with Tajin, and it really gives it an extra touch. I get the same thing everytime, veggie fajitas. It's amazing because they can customize to whatever you may need. They can do many things on this menu vegan! The fajita entree comes out sizzling hot, green and red peppers and think slices of onions and a few limes grilled in there as well. It comes with pico, guac, bean and rice. (And of course sour cream and cheese if you order vegetariant). I've only been able to eat all of my food in one sitting. These meals are hearty. They're filling and priced well. My boyfriend and I can leave here spending just over 20$ and usually having leftovers to take away. Please dine local, and spend your money towards a great family and establishment. I'm a huge Atmosphere fan and in their song "She's Enough" they mentioned Dominquez, so I felt obligated to go. I popped in with a few coworkers over lunch. The restaurant was a lot smaller than I originally thought it was going to be. I wouldn't recommend going in a group larger than 6. They also serve free hot chips and salsa which are awesome!! I split the chicken Morelos Nachos with my friend. They were amazing. I loved how each chip was a mini nacho. The only thing I was disappointed in was that they didn't have margaritas! They use ground beef and ground chicken -both tasted EXACTLY the same despite being "different meat". Real good Mexican tacos have sliced beef and chicken, not GROUND beef/chicken. Real tacos also do not have lettuce and cheddar cheese in it like these ones. WTF? Yes, the staff are Mexican looking, but that does not guarantee good food. Bar Luchador by the U, run by white people have better tacos. Meanwhile Adelitas in NE Minneapolis run by Mexican looking people is so much better than this place as far as food is concerned. Yes, I do love the cozy, cutesy decor and bright lively colors of the place though. The service is attentive, fast and friendly. This is definitely a local's spot, everyone looked like they were from the Nokomis neighborhood. There's barely any other choices for restaurants in this area, so I get why this little spot can get busy -it's 1 out of only 3 restaurants that's nearby Minnehaha falls. Same with the tostadas but no guacamole. Flavor a are good, ingredients are fresh. Service is helpful, pleasant yet a bit slow for fulfilling orders. We also tried the fried ice cream.
