Thanks to a recent Yelp Elite Event (YEE) at Domo Cafe Kahala, I was reminded about their use of sashimi-grade fish in their poke recipes and sushi. During the YEE, we sampled their signature fresh yuzu ahi poke bowl and received a sushi set for takeout. We remembered the minimal or no seasonings to the fresh fish allowed the fresh and clean taste of the fish to shine in the dishes, so we returned after working out at our gym. The Kahala location is ideal since it's situated at the corner of Wai'alae and Kīlauea Avenues, with a small shared parking lot fronting the business. However, since we were already at Kahala Mall, we just walked a block over. Upon entry to Domo Cafe, a female counter worker greeted us with a brilliant and friendly smile. We decided to get their poke bowls before entering since we had taken a takeout menu from our first visit during the YEE, so we stepped up to place our order right away. Several tables were open for dine-in, so we chose to enjoy the comfortable, air-conditioned, clean, and bright cafe. My husband requested the Cali Salmon Poke Bowl for $15.95, and I got the Signature Yuzu Ahi Poke Bowl for $13.95 + Tobiko for $2.50. Both bowls were delicious and generously portioned. We agreed the quality and texture of the rice made a big difference in the overall flavor enhancement. Overall an easier place on the wallet as far as seafood places go and your belly will be full. Space inside to eat but seems to be a very popular take out spot. First time trying this place. The menu looked good and always willing to try a new poke bowl place. I ordered the seared salmon bowl. The place advertises sashimi grade fish for poke. The salmon in the bowl tasted fresh. The seasoning of the poke was good, not really salty or too flavorful that you can't taste the fish. I wish the salmon was seared a little more. Most of the pieces were raw. The sauce and rice were good so together it made a nice bowl. For the size and what you get, I think the $14.95 ,is a bit high. Others in my group had combination bentos and sushi. All looked good but again, little on the high side. It cost 4 adults $76 for take-out. The place has only a few small tables. Very clean and other side dishes and drinks are sold. Service was on time and friendly. The location is good for me but I can get a better poke bowl for less. I've been to this location on several occasions and must day the food has been consistent except for today. I've been to their Chinatown location as well as their Kapiolani Blvd location which closed down. We like to come to this location when in the area. It is located in the same strip mall as Assagios on Waialae Ave just kitty corner to Kahala Mall. The parking lot is not really big for the amount of businesses that are there and can get very busy. When you enter, they have inside dining to the left and drink coolers and other items chilling to the right. It restaurant is clean for the most part and not really big on the inside. All of the times that we have come here, there have always been a line and quite busy. I would recommend calling your order in because it can get very busy. But be sure to double check your order as well becore leaving. Once I called in my order and when we opened it up, part of the order was wrong. When I called, they were kind enough to say that would refund me which was I thought was awesome. On this visit, we ordered the domo special (ahi, salmon, and hamachi poke) over salad and the garlic set (garlic ahi, salmon, hamachi, sub the ebi for extra salmon) which were both delicious although the ahi in the salad was not as fresh and the ahi in the garlic set seemed a little spoiled. The dressing for the salad was good. It was a sesame style semi vinegarette that is not creamy. I enjoyed it a lot. For the most part, the food has been good and consistent, but the ahi was not on this visit. The employees are friendly and welcoming. Although we had an order mix up in the past and the ahi was not so good on this visit, I still rate them 4 stars because the food has been good. Chef and owner Mr. Woo and his wife have embarked upon opening a 2nd terrific Domo Café location parallel from Kahala Mall on the mountain side off Waialae Ave. As we all come to know their Chinatown location serves ONLY the FRESHEST and FINEST QUALITY ingredients, as Mr. Woo emphases that his patrons should truly enjoy his quality fresh poke, or sushi offerings at a reasonable price. He is a skilled chef/owner who hand picks his stores raw fresh seafoods at the local fish auction, where he purchases only the premium grades of seafood available. I learned this little-known fact that he himself scales, cleans, debones/fillets, & cut/slice his auctioned fresh whole fish to be served as raw poke or placed upon his top-notch graded sushi menu offerings. As he feels that by trusting his own skill set instincts versus paying to have fish pre-cleaned, offers a fresher, cleaner cut, and lesser expensive priced product, allowing him to pass these $ savings on to his customers. As an example of his desire to only serve premium grade fresh fish, is the Ahi grades he purchases, which are 2-3 grades higher or sashimi grades quality versus other competitors. And take note that upon ordering your poke bowl in store, the added flavored ingredients are only then mixed in to make for a quick marinate, & served. As previously preparing your poke bowl too far in advanced will over marinate your poke, and stresses that you should be able to taste the quality of the sashimi grade fresh fish, as well as the ingredients. As explained, that by the time order is started, completed and served within a few minutes, all the flavors will be sufficient enough to fully enjoy, stating that you never want to have your expensive fresh seafood poke sit in the marinade for any prolong periods of time. Speaking of serving only fresh fish, believe it or not he only purchases fresh farmed raised Salmon versus wild, as he finds that sometimes the wild salmon flesh can have parasites, or may be slimy, and which you will need to utilize salt to wash off the slime. Also, communicated is that previously frozen fish flesh deteriorates and he refuses to serve any of this form at either of his cafés. And despite fresh being associated as being more costly, take note that even despite the shortages of fresh fish during the warmer summer water months, Mr. Woo due to his business acumen does his best to not increase his prices. I can see how this would be a good option for parties, as they have various sushi platter offerings at very reasonable prices. I decided to try their E4 - seared salmon bowl for $13.95. The bowl looked exactly as it did in the photo! It came with Japanese Aburi Style (Seared) Salmon with Garlic Mayo on a bed of white rice. It was absolutely delicious! The fish seemed fresh and of course the garlic Mayo makes everything better. This is primarily a take-out place, but they do have a few tables inside. I had called my order in and it was ready by the time I got there. They have a shared parking lot right outside of their establishment. They're located on Waialae Ave. - you can't miss them. Domo Cafe has quickly become my go-to spot for sushi platters. This quick service sushi spot in Kahala serves up fresh fish (bought daily at auction) for a reasonable price. You can order online for pick-up or there are a few tables inside if you want to dine-in. There is a small parking lot but it can get crazy on busy days. I most recently came in to pick-up the #9 aburi lovers platter for a V-day beach picnic. I love how the aburi (torched) really brings out the fatty flavors of the fish. I definitely recommend eating their aburi sushi as soon as possible for the best flavors! I also really love their yuzu poke. I've had both their yuzu ahi and salmon poke- there's fresh yuzu grind in it and it's such a nice balance of citrus and umami. If I had to choose between ahi and salmon... I finally got to try Domo Cafe! I've been wanting to try this place for years now but just never have until last week. I mobile ordered to make it easier for myself because I was coming from work and wanted to make sure it would be ready by the time I got there. I was about 10 minutes early so I had too wait a little but they still made it right about the time I had it scheduled for. The inside is very clean and has nice decor. They also have nice tv menu boards with pictures. I ordered the Mixed Combo Platter and added onto to it: spicy ahi, tamago, ika & masago. I wrote it in the comments section of my order. They use fresh fish which is definitely what I look for nowadays because I can't eat previously frozen fish. Everything was so good and I may have added on too much because had leftovers (sushi never tastes as good as the day of). I'm so glad I finally got try this place and definitely will be back hopefully sooner than later! The parking lot can get crowded like when we went at about 5pm on a weekday. Thought I give Domo Cafe a try again. It's ok again just a average place if you wanting a poke bowl. This time I ordered their Teri chicken with Unagi sushi bento . The Teri chicken sauce was very sweet and the Unagi sushi wasn't that fresh . Their workers hardly speak English so it's hard to understand what they are saying. When ordering I said I wanted A-4 bento then the counter person replied totally something else luckily I repeated my order if not I was about to get home with the wrong order . Also I wanted a plain salmon Donburi just plain Salmon over sushi rice . The same counter person said I should order the Salmon w/ onion it's cheaper just minus the onions. So of course I agreed got home the salmon had a sweet type of shoyu sauce on top . The Great: Seafood is always fresh including the higher end products like Uni. My recent go to has been the Ashley 2.0 named after local newscaster Ashley Nagaoka, the bowl has scallops, salmon, toro, ikura, and uni which are my favorites. My back up is the Sashimi bowl which is really a chirashi. The Good: They have additional bento for those that may not be totally into the sushi/poke/sashimi scene but are with others who are dining there. The Bento choices are relatively large spanning tempura, unagi, chicken, etc and offer a good second choice. The Okay: Depending on the time of day (5:30 pm and later) the small parking lot does fill up especially with diners going to Assaggio in the same complex. I made a large order for New Year's Day with a large amount of hamachi. You couldn't order hamachi sashimi on New Year's Day so I ordered a large amount of hamachi sushi. The hamachi on the sushi was old and tasteless. The ahi was also of poor quality. I have made several orders a year of $250+ at Domo Cafe Kahala but no more.
