Both "Little hole in the wall" Hispanic restaurants in this hood are very good. Melanie's Restaurant is right up the block. Great food. These people are not afraid to add the flavor to their dishes at all. I had a "Cochinita" Burrito and it was great. You can tell the meat was marinated for at least a day and it the seasoning became to much, the rice and beans are right there to even it all out. I would have the dish again with a glass of water or if they have "Jamaica" drink (I didn't look for it on the menu) Iit would be perfect but you need a good pallet cleanser to deal with the flavor. The restaurant is nestled on a cute strip next to the Q train which is convenient. I ordered chicken sopes and a margarita. The chicken didn't have any flavor and the margarita tasted like a Budweiser Lime-a-Rita. I had to put so much salt on my entree. The salsa and cheese dip tasted like they were from a jar and the chips were not hot. I had leftovers and ate it the next day and the food was much better but I would not dine here again. Just moved out of Flatbush after living there for almost 4 years, and I'll definitely be missing this place. Cute and comfortable hole in the wall Mexican joint. One of the best in the neighborhood without a doubt. Great prices, food, and atmosphere. Don't expect 5-star dining, the veggies aren't always the freshest, but I never had a bad meal here. 100% recommend if you're in the area looking for some Mexican comfort food. read more

Not nearly as good as the nearby Cinco De Mayo. The food is always well made and generous. But the flavor is always lacking, anything from their salsa to their burritos seem to just have muted flavor. It's perfect for a person who loves Mexican flavor but can't handle the spice. The store is cute and always clean. The waiters are efficient. It is slightly expensive for Mexican food the cheapest entrees range from 8-10 dollars. Although it's hardly an average run-down Ditmas restaurant, there are other places I'd much rather eat at. read more

I upped my rating one star because we have identified the problem here. Alas, it is the owner. She runs hot and cold. When she's nice, everything is great, when she's in a bad mood (or whatever her problem is), you better hope she's not serving you. The only time we are ever charged for hot sauce is when she writes up the check. We have popped in, only to walk right out when we see she is waiting tables alone. Also, the TV is no longer much of a problem. Now that's done, I must say the food is still superb, and all the other waitstaff are very nice. The Mojarra Frita (fried tilapia) is not on the menu, and they don't always have it, but when they do, it is beyond delicious. The price varies, but who cares! Yay, this place is great!!! I've lived down the street for 2 years and never tried it until now. I've always gone to Cinco de Mayo which seems more neighborhoody being on Cortelyou and all, but I have to say, Don Burrito's food is better. No question. I got chicken enchiladas rancheras, BF got something with pork, and we split steak nachos. The nachos were served individually topped - I love them this way. All the meat was tender - not dry (like CdM). My enchiladas were covered in lots of slightly browned cheese - not authentic Mexican but 100% up my alley. Drinks were cheap, service was great. Even the music was good. I feel a little guilty about it, but this is my neighborhood Mexican place from now on. read more

I usually commute from queens all the way to Brooklyn just to have the steak campesino. If youre a big fan of cheesy Mexican foods then this is the right place! My boyfriend usually gets the fajita mix and its also great! As long as the food is good and reasonably priced (which I think is more that reasonable here) I am more than happy. As a server at a Mexican restaurant with a similar layout I do see how service can improve but the servers have always been nice and do their jobs how they are supposed to. So here's the thing: it tasted GOOD but I have my doubts as to the cleanliness. Why? I ordered chips and salsa to go, and found a dead ant in the salsa. I had been enjoying the salsa a lot: very fresh, mild taste. I decided to scoop from the bottom as I had only been skimming off the top. A dead ant came up with the chip. I immediately threw the salsa away, eating my other items with heightened suspicion: spinach quesadilla, side of refried beans and green salsa, both of which were free with the quesadilla. Quesadilla was big and delicious, and I loved the refried beans. I liked that the food wasn't too salty. Chips were nothing special. Green salsa was good, but would've been better if it had been at all spicy. It was also a bit TOO citrusy. I will consider trying Don Burrito again, but I found I could not enjoy my food as much after the dead ant in the salsa. Mexican restaurant right down the street from me, obviously a staple of my diet. When I moved to the neighborhood 8 years ago I couldn't get enough...ate here or got delivery at least once a week. My dish is the Ranchero Burrito, a spicy chicken burrito packed with fixings smothered in cheese, salsa and ranch sauce. However, as of the past few years I have seen a steady decline in the quality. I don't know what happened and it makes me sad. The food has been soggier and more and more bland, and, maybe I just got fatter, but I'm pretty sure they started giving slightly smaller portions. Chalk it up to the recession. Still very worthwhile. Better to eat in...chips and the salsa are the dankness, and the waiter with the ponytail and glasses is my boy. read more
