The camarones was similarly unsavory and overcooked into a withered ball. The salsa had an unclean aftertaste, almost like it came from a dirty bowl. This place is good. It's really quiet inside. They play no music and I think the lights may have been turned off? Not sure, but the ambiance is lacking. That aside, the food was good and really cheap so it covers *almost* everything for a fine dining experience :D My beau ordered some kind of enchilada which was smothered (and I mean smothered!) with cheese and sour cream and came with a huge side of rice and beans. His meal was deelish. I ordered my usual Mexican fare: 1 steak taco and 1 grilled chicken taco. Both tacos were simple, yet delicious and came with just grilled meat, diced onions, cilantro and a lime wedge, folded into two, soft, corn tortillas. The guacamole was just OK. I think it was too cold and possibly just came out from the fridge? Which made it taste a little weird to me. If it were room temp I think I may have liked it better, but will try it again soon. The horchata and the tamarindo were both excellent. The tamarindo had a nice sweet kick to it and the horchata was perfectly milky with just a dash of cinnamon. They both tasted homemade and not powder mixed, a huge plus! My only suggestion would be to invest in a sound system and play some light background music. Nothing loud or obnoxious, but just a few speakers with a tune in the background. I think it would make a big difference for the feel of the space when people are dining in. Also, maybe some Mexican artwork, tiles or otherwise fun paint colors for the walls. This too would lend well to building an atmosphere. Interior decor and ambiance aside, the couple was friendly and the food was tasty and we will definitely be back. read more

If you're like us and have been on the fence about this place because you've walked by and never seen it busy, then worry no more: this place is excellent. After 30+ years spent between Texas and California, I approach Mexican food in New York assuming it will fall short. This place passes every test. Perfectly grilled steak, fresh chicken soup, soft warm tortillas, and rice and beans that you'll want to finish (always a good sign). It's also very clean and well looked after. There's definitely a level of pride being kept up here. It could use some more atmosphere, like perhaps some music. And if they could get a liquor license sorted (or even just beer/wine), I could see this being a great spot to catch a weekend game and have drinks/lunch. Other than that: no complaints! read more

We can always count on the food here. Great quality, authenticity. We've only done takeout but notice that they recently renovated to be much more 'dine-in' friendly. When they closed and changed their name we were so worried they were gone. When they reopened earlier this year (previously called La Huasteca, El Actuario then (briefly) Dos Locos), we celebrated! Fear not, fans: the menu and recipes have stayed the same. When we stopped by and spoke with the owner, he assured us that his wife was still using her recipes. They aren't afraid to give a big bag of freshly made (perfect) chips. Best chips around, period. (We tried all of the Mexican places in the area while they renovated and were always disapointed). I ask for a alcoholic beverage , they said they have lime margaritas, I don't like lime, so I asked for strawberry, the waiter made it seem as if there were no other flavors but lime, after convincing the waiter, he told me he'll make it for me. I got my drink and it was literately a lime margarita with blended strawberries. Tasted a little weird but it was drinkable. 2 Ok now, on to my meal, I ordered a chicken quesadilla and shrimp tacos. I was very clear on what I wanted. The man comes back with a chicken quesadilla (which was really tasty) and fish tacos. 3. I informed him that I did not want fish I wanted shrimp tacos. Do you know that this man told me they DONT MAKE SHRIMP TACOS. There's a shrimp burrito, and a lot of other menu items with shrimp, How hard is it to take a taco shell and put some shrimp in it. 4. The Mexican lady that started taking my order and sat me down also made my food. I guess because it's so empty they cant hire a proper host, waiter and chef. Leave the Mexican grandma in the back making the food. Hire a young waiter that can speak english and is friendly. Don't be deceived by this empty business on a street with somewhat empty businesses. This food is SENSATIONAL. They do a huge delivery business which is probably how they still are in business with so many empty tables, and the menu is gigantic and everything we've had has been delicious. The five dollar burrito sale was never actually five dollars. They charged an extra two or three dollars each time and claimed it was tax. Sales tax is definitely not that high. Plus the burrito always makes my stomach hurt. Some days it tastes worse than others. Edit: How the hell does a 4.5 percent sales tax of five dollars add up to two dollars? If you can't do basic math you aren't qualified to own a store. The total sales tax is 8.875% which adds up to roughly 44 cents. Where the hell does the other $1.66 come from?
