I came to this Don's as I didn't want to make the trek all the way out to Chinatown but was craving a banh mi crazy bad. I picked up two sandwiches and an order of fried egg rolls and paid around $11. The sandwich was not as good as the ones from the original Don's are, but I guess that's to be expected at any offshoot restaurant. The bread just wasn't as crisp and the grilled pork was a little tough. Something was slightly off. However, I can't complain as it did satisfy my craving! Downgrading review. Waited 20 minutes for a chicken sandwich. I saw the chicken come out of the kitchen and I thought okay at least it's fresh. Nope! Dried out flavorless shredded chicken. Have had better from the dollar menu elsewhere. So sad. read more

The first time I went here a few years ago, I didn't know they had a $10 credit card minimum. When I tried to pay with my card, they informed me of their policy. I told them I did not have cash and it was such a scene! The waiter went and told "person in charge" and they pointed at me and were speaking loudly in different language and you could see they were beyond irritated. They ended up letting me pay but it was all so uncomfortable- I decided never to return. Fast forward to yesterday- I went in (with cash) and the waiter was just so rude from the moment I walked in. He literally yelled "Togo order?" - I said no...dine in. I started to walk to table by the window and he told me to sit near register. I refused and went to sit near the window anyway. In my opinion- I felt like I was inconveniencing him to walk across the restaurant & he was not happy about those extra steps! ""What do you want to drink?"- mind you I haven't even sat down yet... He was rude about me asking for real sugar for my ice tea (he only brought me Sweet & Low) and a spoon. I literally had to get up and go fetch it myself- heaven forbid he has to walk to my out of the way table. Young man with the glasses: Please, I beg you...find a job you like! Stop being miserable and rude to other people who just want to give you their money!!!!!! We're new fans of Don Cafe. It's reasonably priced, clean and modern, and serves very tasty food. They make a mean bahn mi (the BBQ pork was especially good) as well as good pho and my personal fave, Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio/Chargrilled Pork & Egg Roll Vermicelli Bowl. Don's 2nd sandwich shop is definitely living up to his original shop's reputation. This was my first experience having a Vietnamese Sandwich, and I'm coming back to Don's for my second indefinitely. Fantastic combo of flavor and texture. Being that this was my first tasting of this speciality, I will uncontrollably be biased, but even the friend I was with (who has had MANY varieties across Houston) says these are in the top 3 best in the city. If you too have never been introduced to this delicacy, it's your choice of meat placed in a soft, fresh baked bun with fragrant cilantro, raw jalapeño (optional), Julianned carrots with a staple butter sauce. They also have Pho and other traditional dishes and drinks. Service was average, but you can never expect much on a slow Monday evening a couple hours before closing. Overall, that's the only thing holding this place back from being at the 5 Star rating. Now you don't have to drive into China Town to have a good meal. Came here with my parents for lunch. The place is pretty large and very clean. Although having come from New York, pretty much any place in Houston would qualify as being larger and cleaner. I had the pork banh mi, my dad had the pho, and my mom had bun. The baguette was very nice. Good texture. Warm and soft on the inside with a nice outter crunch. The meat was juicy and well seasoned. The pho was also pretty good. I didn't get a chance to try to the bun but it looked decent. Great lunch spot in a place that is pretty much devoid of lunch options. Hope it stays i business. My first visit to this location. Let's break it down: Food: I tried the beef stew with bread - flavorful broth, tender beef and carrots. The bread was nice, crispy and fresh. The stew was served in a triangular bowl, which was the only thing I could find fault with. Service: Waiter was prompt and friendly. Another staff member ( I think the manager) also helped collect our plates so he could ask about our experience. I find that to be highly commendable. Been coming here and the Chinatown location( since I was in elementary) and it is SO DELICIOUS. They don't try to win you over with fancy things ( even though it's still nice presentation) the food is what blows you away :) The owner is also a very nice person if you ever see him~! The prices were VERY reasonable we got two bahn mi's (grilled pork and grilled beef), chicken noodle soup, and three egg rolls plus drinks for under $20.00. The food was so scrumptious. Disappointed with this Don's Cafe. Their food isn't as good (very dry - you could tell it's not fresh), the service is fair one day, and the next day it's very poor. We've been coming here several times, hoping it's as good as the one on Bellaire - they are just conveniently located. But time and time, again and again, something comes up. A smoking chef (in the kitchen), cashier keeps pushing us to eat so they could close, and waiter gets upset with us because we walked in while he was eating. The Bo Luc Lac or sizzling beef plate is my favorite. I used to go every week during the summer for this dish. Two times that I have tried to go, it was closed so my tip is to always check if this place is open first. Their sizzling beef plate has an amazing flavor and the customer service is quick. They only check up on you once or twice but that isn't a problem for me. The waitress that helped us when we went was very nice about everything. This is a quaint little cafe located on Dulles Avenue near the high school. It's in a strip center with a few vacant spots and a Shipley's donuts planted right in the middle if the parking lot. Tucked into the far right corner upon entering its amazing how much space the restaurant actually has. You wouldn't think so from the entrance. Now I've been coming here for years but have never reviewed it oddly. I thought I had but I guess not. For the Stafford area and surrounding communities like Sugar Creek and Plantation Bend etc it's one of the better Vietnamese restaurant experiences in the area. My favorite being Pho Ben these days. But Don's Cafe falls a close second. In reality there aren't that many options. You're best bet is Chinatown in Bellaire for the best! And the Alief area. But today for lunch my daughter and I opted for Don's mainly for the sandwich combos which are a pretty good deal! A sandwich, soft drink and spring rolls for under $10. The decor inside is hip and the staff very pleasant and efficient. The sandwiches tasted fresh and the bread was nice and crunchy. The way I like it! They also have Pho and Banh Cuon which I have not tried yet but I'm sure it's not bad. This place seems to popular with the high school kids as we saw several while we were there. So if you're ever in the Stafford area check it out! Not a bad place. Pretty good service and pretty good food! read more

Great food at a very good price. The banh mi sandwiches are tasty. I've had both the fried tofu and grilled pork. With the jalapeno though it can get very spicy so you might want to do without if you aren't a fan of spicy. The shrimp spring rolls are fresh and yummy with the peanut sauce. The shrimp pho has nice sized shrimp and the veggies with it were plentiful and fresh. I like that everything comes on the side so you can make your bowl how you like. My co-worker and I came here Monday 12/12/16 during our lunch hour and the server forgot about my order with rice and grilled pork. We kept asking any waitresses that we saw but they acted like they didn't know what was going on. Yet they're quick to hand out other ordered that came after us. So we went to the counter and the guy in the front was quick to ask about our payment and he didn't even say sorry or tried to talk about the issue. Just like the original shop but this second location is beautiful with a new restaurant. Some accomodations for more americanized clientele apparent with american sodas and chips. Price is 50cent more than in china town for sandwich but that's the norm for the non-chinatown restaurants. However, the quality of food is just as good with no compromise as in chinatown. Just instead of the plastic sandwich baskets they have fancy metal baskets and the sandwiches are cut all on an angle instead of down the middle like at the other shop. They opened a Don's Cafe in SL and that means that there is worthy Banh Mi finally around my part of town. What makes Don's Banh Mi so good is the spread on the bread and the quality of the bread. This location is in the same shopping center as Subway straight across from Dulles High School. The parking lot is quite new and spacious. As any other Asian joint this place only takes cash which is a bit troublesome as I rarely carry cash especially in SL. I am sorry but as a business owner you need to cater to your customers and not the other way around. It works in Bellaire as that's how most asian's do it but when you are in the suburbs of SL you need to adjust your business concept. The actually interior of the restaurant is very plain but i have to admit that place is quite a bit larger inside than i was expecting. You can fit quite a large amount of customers if necessary. Back to talking about what this review is about: the food. Banh Mi: this is for all types of banh mi - just the best in town. very few places can top don's cafe when it comes to the Vietnamese sandwiches. Pho: very clear and flavorful broth. Don's isnt known for her pho (at least not to me) but if you want above average pho is place will not disappoint either. Cha Gio (eggrolls): not too bad but ive had better. i love eggrolls so i will get it everytime i come here. Come out and try this place if you havent it is definitely worth it. I've been waiting for the construction on Dulles to finish so I could try this place. I got the #1 combo, Pork Banh Mi and Vietnamese Coffee. The butter that they use on the bread is one of the best.
