I had been at this Don's Cafe location quite a few times but never got around to write a review until now. My impression was that it was not as busy and hectic as the one on Bellaire. The place also looked clean. We arrived here on a Saturday prior to their opening hour of 9 AM so we were able to see how they started their operation. First the owner arrived then I saw workers piling into the restaurant. For kitchen staff, a group of them came in with produce and ingredients to prepare the food. As we seated we saw a worker spot-cleaned tables, chairs, and wood panels around the restaurant. We order two combo sandwiches. I chose the Don' cafe sandwich that came with iced coffee. The coffee was pre-made which was a little disappointing but good nonetheless. The sandwich had all sorts of meat in it. If you are not an adventurous person it's best to get a different sandwich. Having said that the sandwich was really good. Both of us loved the fact that they were generous with butter, pate and their seasoning. My wife BBQ pork sandwich combo came with a drink and a summer roll. Her sandwich was equally good, but the summer roll was just OK. The check was a buck under $20. My wife had half of her sandwich left to take home. The food and drink were alright. The service was ok; there was nothing to complain. Let's start this off by saying the food was not bad at all. Ordered the chicken vermicelli and 2 chicken sandwiches. Tasted fresh and hot. The customer service here is absolutely terrible! Came in with two friends at around 6 pm and was informed they would close at 7. We received our food at 6:20, and started to open our bags to eat when suddenly we were rudely met by multiple employees telling us they were about to 'close' and 'mop' and that we needed to leave! It was about 40 minutes before close and we had asked if we could quickly finish our meals but they insisted we pack up our food and leave immediately. There is a credit card minimum and I did not have enough cash, so I ordered something else and the owner was upset with me for that and yelling at me from across the restaurant. So glad this location opened!! It's a bit fancier than the Chinatown location, but still delicious!! The menu is smaller though, I'm not sure if they plan to expand it later....hopefully!! We actually came the 2nd day they opened. Everything was great, the owners were super nice and even gave us some complimentary desserts =) Of course, my husband and I got our regular. BBQ Pork Banh mi, well we also tried the special banh mi as well. Both were yummy. My friend got a grilled chicken rice dish, very good! Delicious 'banh mi' (Vietnamese sandwiches) to be had here! IMO, just as good as the original Chinatown location on Bellaire Blvd. The classic one to try if you haven't had banh mi before is the BBQ Pork sandwich. FYI by default they come w/jalapenos, cilantro, carrot, and a creamy delicious concoction that they call "butter" -- if you can't handle jalapenos or dislike cilantro, remember to mention that. The "butter" spread is key to these delicious sandwiches. This location is spacious and looks clean & new (well... because it IS new), making it a much more pleasant place to eat than the old Chinatown location. If you come here headed South, you have to make a U-turn. The restaurant is nice. It would be great for a casual date. The menu is limited but what I've order all has been pretty good. Service is helpful, attentive and welcoming. This is my weekly ban mi stop. I order it with extra cilantro and jalapeno. I think it makes the perfect sandwich for a drive home after work. They have pho and other noodle dishes here. I would recommend their spring rolls tasted very fresh. This is not a high traffic location. It is across the street from a high school and there is a big median in the way so you have to make that U-turn and you can't make a left coming out of the parking lot. Other than that I would definitely recommend this place. They have urged me to call in for my to-go order, I don't mind waiting. It usually takes about 15 minutes and I'm usually leaving work, so I'm just happy to be somewhere else. read more

I would recommend going to the Don Cafe in Bellaire every time unless it is just too inconvenient to go to that location. The sandwiches are great. They easily have the best banh mi that I've had in Houston. Whatever kind of butter or sauce that they use is just delicious. I also feel like they are the only ones to get shredded chicken moist instead of insanely dry. I could eat these sandwiches all the time, and they're cheap. I haven't really explored their other menu items, but from what I have had, I have learned to stick with the sandwiches. The other foods are just better at other restaurants. Now for why this gets two stars. The service is awful. It is probably one of the worst I've experienced. They have a deal where if you buy 5 sandwiches, you get one free, but every time I go they come up with another nonsensical reason that that doesn't apply. The owner, specifically, is very rude. He rushes all of his employees and customers, and is just rude overall. I won't go into detail, but basically I won't be coming back here because of my experiences with him and the staff. Food: 4/5 They have the best 'banh mi' in Houston. What makes them unique compared to other banh mis is the "butter" spread. It's delicious in the sandwich. If you don't want too much of the spread, you can always request them to put it on the side. Their original is in Bellaire but it tastes just as good. Cleanliness: 5/5 The restaurant looks new and clean. No roaches. The waiter/waitress clean right after each customers leave. Customer service: 3/5 We usually go on Sunday afternoons. If they're busy, there's not enough wait staff so it can take a long time for your order to come out. One time, my husband's meal came out when everyone at our table had finished eating. We were tempted to tell them to cancel his meal. I think they're also trying to figure a better workflow so that they won't confuse someone's order with mine (esp when they're busy). Tip: If you want to use your credit card, you need to spend a minimum of $10. They usually don't deliver. Hands down one of the best Vietnamese cafes in Houston, by far the best in the area that I've tried so far. The bread on the banh mi sandwiches are perfectly crispy and airy, so it's chewy but not an oral workout. The flavors of the gogi "grilled beef" sandwich are plenty authentic; they have the right amount of aioli and it all pairs well with the iced coffee. This place is opened by the same owner as the one on Bellaire. I'm so glad they decided to open one here since my parents live right around the corner, which means I don't have to drive for more than 5 minutes for fast and cheap vietnamese food. They have Banh Mi - vietnamese sandwiches (I love #2 the grilled chicken sandwich), they have Pho (tasty vietnamese noodle soup and surprisingly good considering this isn't a pho specific restaurant), rice plates, vermicelli, and of course egg rolls, spring rolls and vietnamese style chicken wings. They also added new items to the menu, sizzling beef platter, and some beef stews with french baguette. This place is right behind Shipley's Donuts across from Dulles High School. As for now they are offering 10% off on everything but is cash only for now. I'm gonna keep coming back here because I'd really like for them to stick around, and I tell my family to come here too! I love the combination banh mi at this place and the prices are reasonable. It's only about $3 per sandwich. The owner is also super awesome because after we placed our order for our sandwiches and had to wait for it, we went next door to buy some boba to kill some time, and then he come into the boba place to deliver the sandwiches straight to us. We used to have to drive all the way out to the Chinatown location on Bellaire Blvd. for some good banh mi, but those days are over! If you buy 5 banh mi, you get the 6th free. I haven't really tried the other food since Don Cafe, to me, is all about the banh mi. So I can't really comment on it. The location is really nice but food quality I'm kind of disappointed. I came during lunch hour on a Monday as expected they would have been busy. With about 3 servers and a cashier for Togo. We go seated right away and orders were taken there after. I order the pork rice plate. My food came out and it was grilled chicken. So basically she got my order wrong, she was going to replace it but we were short on time so I was stuck with chicken. Ohhh It also didn't come with soup like most places do. I asked the waitress she said its an additional cost for if I wanted the soup. Beef stew 3/5 portion wasn't that big, there was flavor in it but I was disappointed that my carrots were still frozen. Luckily the meat was hot. Prices aren't reflected on their menu accurately so expect to pay about a dollar extra for certain dishes. My chicken rice was supposed to be 8 dollars and it ended up being 9 before tax. Overall if you're in the mood for good sandwiches I recommend coming here for to go or dine in style. There's plenty of parking and there's a boba joint next door. If you buy 5 sandwiches you get 1 free btw, pretty neat. Card minimum is 10 too. If you're too lazy to come out you can order. I absolutely love banh mi sandwiches! It's great to finally have a banh mi restaurant not too far from Sugar Land. You dont have to drive all the way to the city, or get lost in Midtown! (Not that I dont love the city, but sometimes I get lazy to drive out there). This place is fairly new, so its ultra clean and shiny inside. The interior of the restaurant is spacious with many areas to sit. I ordered the vegetarian tofu banh mi, that came with all the fix-ins. The tofu pieces were fried and crispy. I'm not a fan of fried food, but didnt mind it too much in my sandwich. The tofu was plain and bare-naked. Most places I go to, they spike the tofu with spices or lemongrass. I didnt mind it much that the tofu was plain, I simply dashed a bit of hot sauce and soy sauce in my sandwich. I did notice that the essential mayonnaise was missing from my meal. That is what binds a Vietnamese style sandwich! I'll make sure that they put it into my meal next time. I even asked the waiter if the mayo they serve is vegetarian, and he told me that it is. So i'm not sure why they forgot to add it, but it's all good. I also tried the soft rolls with shrimp. The rolls were fresh and soft and came with a hoisin style dipping sauce. I also loved the fact that I was greeted kindly by the owner. He checked up on me often. The family that owns this cafe are courteous and caring. Quality and service definitely declined at this location. The lady that used to make the banh mi hasn't been there the last few times I've visited. The guy who makes them now barely toasts the bread, the crisp was my favorite part. The girl who used to wait the tables was always fast, efficient & friendly and I haven't seen her there the past few times I've visited either. The owner or manager not sure, but the guy who just stands there with headphones in is unwelcoming and not helpful. He's the reason my parents refuse to go to this location anymore. Walking in there are 2 doors which is a little confusing. The lady was nice though and told us to sit wherever. We ordered chicken sandwich (combo with egg rolls), round eye steak pho, and an ice coffee. My husband said the ice coffee was really strong but he watered it down some and really enjoyed it. My pho was really yummy. Something nice and warm. Steak pieces were good and the noodles were tasty. My husband said his sandwich was delicious and the egg rolls were just average. Bought the grill pork sandwich with eggs and combination fried rice. The sandwich was super bland where the meat seemed like it wasn't even marinated at all and the pickled carrots had no flavor. Same with the fried rice, which had no flavor what so ever and knew t when I first opened the box because it was so pale in color. This use to be my favorite pho place in the sugarland/stafford area. The last 3 times I've been there i have been very disappointed. Food is just ok now. The customer service is definitely gotten worse. Items are forgotten, no one comes back to check on you or refill things. Today i called to ask about a delivery option and got a rude person on the phone who stated the delivery man was out on deliveries and she didnt know how long it would be. That's it. She didnt offer any other options and acted as if i wad bothering her. I then began to place my order and just wanted it delivered when he came back. She continued to say they don't deliver to my address. THEY HAVE DELIVERED TO ME BEFORE. i said nevermind and hungup. Can you say yuck! I ordered a side salad that was drenched in what tasted like a soggy candy. They charge 11 dollars for a fish and small salad. To top it off I waited 25 minutes and according to the cashier it takes long to fry fish, clearly she has never fried a fish. To top it off the service was below par. The O.G. is the Bellaire location, itself a spawn of workers from the place formerly known as Givral, but not the same Givral as the other locations, and which is now B10. Got all that? If you don't know what a banh mi is, it's a Vietnamese sandwich, and it's one of the best deals in Houston, rivaling the three taco order from any one of your neighborhood taco trucks. The sandwich costs around $3.50, depending on meat. That's a 50 cent surcharge from the Chinatown location, but a discount to a far, far mediocre Subway sandwich. I could put away 2 in my glory days. Now, 1 is plenty filling, with an added half when I'm particularly ravenous. If you already know what a banh mi is but don't know why Don makes the best around, I'll tell you: it's their delicious lard butter. Simply put, it spanks the pants off any other banh mi in town. Most people love the BBQ pork or the "special" dac biet (cold cuts, pate, and headcheese), but honestly, their shredded chicken is money and something I'd seriously consider for my last meal. I very rarely dip into the pho or rice dishes, but this location has a few of those offered as well. Along with the surcharge, this Don has upgraded the digs. Whereas the Bellaire location is downright grungy, the Sugar Land one is bright and clean with television menus affixed to the wall (think Givral on Washington). My own frustration? This location is directly across from Dulles High School, which I attended long enough ago to witness my 10-year HS reunion upcoming this summer. Very rude staff especially the waiter/waitress couple. They were extremely rude and i suggest they should go to training again. I walked in and I was looking at the menu behind the cash register. The waitress came and yelled at me and told me to sit and she will give me a physical menu. So I guess you're supposed to sit at a table even if you are ordering 2go I like the location on Bellaire better. Doesn't make sense if there is a menu on the wall behind the cash register. Service is good and the banh mi sandwiches are good. Comparing it to the original establishment... This place is a lot nicer than the Bellaire one, I suppose because it's more of a sit-down place and less people come here versus the original one on Bellaire where most people usually get it to go. I have also noticed that when I started coming here, it takes longer to prepare the food here. Maybe because I was so used to the swiftness of the workers at the Bellaire location making the sandwiches? Who knows. The sandwiches are also a lot smaller and more expensive (by a few cents) here than they are in Bellaire. I would much prefer the sandwiches at the Bellaire location, but this place is decent. Aside from that, It's a great place for lunch, and I love how they have combos here. I stick to getting a combo #4 which is just the banh mi sandwich, spring roll, and a drink! The BBQ beef has become my usual order. The restaurant itself is in a small complex and usually packed with cars, but I've never had a problem finding parking.
