After a disappointing cheese enchilada plate at another place last night, en route back from Clear Lake, I remembered I had made a note about a place at 635 McCarty. I don't know how it had come to my attention. I decided to give cheese enchiladas one more try before I got back on my calorie counting. And today was the day. Steam rising from the piping hot salsa picante. Like being in a little restaurant along either side of the border in South Texas. I wish that I could remember who had mentioned this place to me. Ordered the fajita burrito and all of the meat inside of it was huge chunks of fat and nerves.. was willing to work past that and picked it out but when I turned my burrito over there was a used water cap in the wrapping... all for 17 dollars. Really great Tex-Mex restaurant! I usually go for breakfast but stopped by with family to get lunch today. The staff is incredibly attentive and have some of the best service. The food is always delicious, everyone was a fan. The decoration is very maximalist but very nice. License plates, paintings, etc. line every inch of the walls. I went to this small restaurant around 2005 for the first time with my old man for breakfast and I pass thru here all the time and today I decided to go back unfortunately it didn't ask if breakfast was been served all day so because of the time I just decided to order from the lunch menu, the location of the restaurant is on the east side of Houston at the heart of the trucking industry right at the corner of McCarthy and I-10 east, parking is very limited but I was able to find a spot at lunch time, the interior is decorated with all license plates, sport memorabilia, and old street signs from Mexico as well Mexican corner store publicity signs, I was seated right away, the place was maybe half full when I had arrived later on more patrons started filling the empty spots, as a typical mexican/ tex-mex restaurant they bring the cheese, the salsa, and the tortilla chips. I order a Comal Norteño: which included a sizzling platter with beef fajitas, crispy tripitas (calf intestine), and crispy mollejas (beef sweetbreads), accompanied with charro beans, spanish rice, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and corn tortillas. Price was affordable they had lunch special under $15, my bill was a little higher because I order something that was not on the lunch special, the only complaint I have is the rice was a little to saggy for my taste,but beside that everything was good. I couldn't finish it so brought it back home for later, friendly staff and quick service I will be back. read more

Great Tex Mex food with great service and nice ambiance, nice music playing. The only setback is the parking. Nice homey restaurant with lots of knickknacks. They have a great variety of dishes. We ordered the super meal that came with 3 enchiladas, rice, beans, guacamole, a crispy taco and cheese tostada. The enchiladas are filled with shredded chicken and topped with cheesy goodness. The green sauce could be a little spicier but they are good and very filling. The taco is a good size filled to the top. The iced sweet tea is good too. I would recommend coming here. Where has this place been all of our lives? We lived on east side of town most of lives and shame on us for not finding Don Chile till now. Amazing food. Decent price with big portions. They have homemade tortillas and salas. They have lengua!!!! Only complaint is drinks are pricey (almost $4 for soda) and they charge $0.50 for soda refill. read more

Not going to lie I passed the place up the first time looking for it, due to the parking lot was EMPTY. & then when we pulled up(myself & 2 children) I thought it was a little sketchy. But you know, these are always THE BEST places to eat at & it hands down was the BEST Mexican food I have eaten in a while. The beans were authentic, not just regular refried beans. The sour cream chicken enchiladas were bomb. The straws are a major hit for the kids. Yea, I said it, the straws lol They are whirley and bend and you can even tie them in a not. I had heard so many positive things about this restaurant and I read excellent reviews so I had to check it out. My friend and I had an early lunch there today and it did not disappoint. First of all, we were immediately greeted as we entered the restaurant and as usual, I was greeted in English, lol. No worries, I answered her in my native Honduran Spanish language. The restaurant was nice and clean with plenty of sitting space and the ambiance was perfect. My amazing friend who happens to be Mexicana ordered her all time favorite flautas and I ordered what I had been craving for chicken enchiladas. Meanwhile, our drinks came out in no time; lemonade and I forgot what my friend ordered, lol. We snacked on chips which were nice and fresh and delicious salsa verde and pico de gallo. The timing of our food was perfect! My friend enjoyed her flautas and my enchiladas were soooo good!!! I ate less than half and took the rest home which I had for dinner. This is MEXICAN! So delicious. Excellent service. Very clean. Staff wearing masks and gloves. Now to the chips and salsa... did I mention the complimentary queso. I ordered a side of (three tablespoons) guacamole, seasoned perfectly, nice size. Hubby ordered the Vaquero super plate. His started with a cold plate with a Chile con queso, a huge beef taco and about three tablespoons of guacamole. His hot plate was three cheese enchiladas and rice and beans. He looked at it and said it's like your grandmother cooked you lunch. Mexican is his favorite. The cheese on those enchiladas was so good, not fake nasty cheese but delicious stingy melt in your mouth yumminess. I asked for the waitresses recommendation, she suggested the Sour cream chicken enchiladas. My first plate was a cold plate with a beef salad (???) . I get out and it is a cup bowl with a layer of queso, lettuce and ground beef (think mini taco) with a side of cut tomato and grated cheese. It was very good. Then my hot plate, which surprised me a bit. The shredded chicken enchiladas were in a light creamy red sauce with a beautiful big dollop of sour cream (enough for all three enchiladas). The only thing I can say negative is I wish the chicken had a bit of spice to it, slightly bland. The red sauce covering it was very good but maybe add jalapeños to the top next time. Well what an adventure. Sunday mornings are an event here. Many people come here to eat. We arrived at 11 and were given a breakfast menu but we wanted lunch. It's a little bit of a whole in the wall. Looks like it has been around for years. This is Texas Mexican food 101. The carne guisada was delicious as were the enchiladas. Caldo was outstanding. An all around decent experience. The waitress didn't speak good English but she was sweet and attentive and understood what we wanted. All pluses. I am giving it a 3. Stopped in for a late breakfast around 11 to find out they weren't serving breakfast which is ok. Ordered steak la mexicana and some caldo. Caldo was hot, fresh, and full of meat and veggies. Steak was a little odd to me, as it was cut up and mixed with the mexicana sauce, it was still pretty good but I like a regular steak. Plates were plentiful on portions and fresh. read more

Great hole in the wall mexican food. I've had lunch here a few times now and have always had a good experience. The menu is fairly large and offers a wide array of mex and some tex-mex options. Portions are large, plates are greasy and prices are very fair. Also, worth mentioning, you get complimentary queso with the chips when you're seated which is always a plus for the fat kid living inside my stomach. Service is very friendly though not always strong with English. Interior is somewhat small maybe seating a dozen tables and the walls are covered in a hodge podge of Houston sports themed memorabilia and other various nick knacks. Oilers, Rockets and Texans fans will have plenty to look at along with sightings of other random stuff like license plates, hats, old signs, etc. Don Chile isn't a life changing meal that you need drive half way across Houston for, but if you're in the neighborhood and looking for a tasty greasy plate, definitely worth the visit. read more

Service was good. Our waitress didn't speak much English but enough to make sure we were taken care of. My only complaint, and its mild, is that I had to remind her to refill our drinks. That's sort of a pet peeve of mine. Food was delicious. And there was a lot of it! My son had the shrimp enchiladas and I had the chicken enchiladas. We both ended up taking more than half of our plates to go. Seating wasn't very comfortable. The tables and chairs look to be hand crafted. Cushions were hard and the chairs sit high. My family and I have been coming to this Mexican Restaurant for many years. It's a bit distant from where we live in Kingwood, TX, but we all love it. The food is amazing!!! Best tasting Mexican food in all of the Houston area. They have a large menu to pick from and sever very good size portions. The staff is always friendly and attentive.
