We used Yelp and found Don Hall's on our trip from Michigan to Indianapolis. We were looking for steak for medicinal reasons - and boy are we glad we found this place! From the ambience to the friendly staff with the sense of camaraderie among them, it was wonderful. On to the menu and the food - great variety! My husband very much appreciated the variety of choices to put on his Chicago burger. He chose pimento cheese, roasted red peppers and the LTP (lettuce, tomato and House-made bread and butter pickles). It was served on a toasted Chicago onion roll. We started with the Tots Deluxe. Creative crunchy scrumptious variety of ingredients, that went so well together. The bread that was brought out was amazing - hot, crunchy crust with just the right amount of seasoning and soft on the inside - even the whipped butter that came with it was delicious! On to medicinal - purely for assistance with my anemia, I ordered the Porterhouse steak, medium rare. It was tender, flavorful, melt-in-my - mouth! It was a so good, it didn't even need the melted herb butter that was served on top. We shared sides - I chose the German Potatoes - also a creative variety of flavors - brown sugar, vinegarbacon, light onion and crisp potatoes - It was a little sweet for my husband's taste; I very much enjoyed it! Our second shared side was asparagus with Hollandaise sauce - the asparagus was cooked just right, and the Hollandaise was one of the best he had ever had. Stopped in for my birthday and the waitress was great! She was so funny, personable, and nice. It was really nice to get a server who would joke with us and who cared. We had the ribeye, coffee crusted strip, salmon, and cod. To start the bread was delicious. It was warm and well seasoned. The salmon was great with the teriyaki sauce I didn't like the noodles as much. The coffee crusted strip was cooked to order and very tender. For the last several years, The Deck was our favorite place to eat during the summer. We couldn't wait for it to open this year. We finally got a chance to go (May 26, 2026) and as usual the service was fantastic. The food however was disappointing. I usually get the Philly Steak sandwich with the Au Jus so that's what I ordered. When they brought it out my first thought was "Where is the rest of the sandwich?" The bun was much smaller than normal and there was very little steak, peppers and onions. Normally I could make two meals out of this entree but this was hardly one meal. I was ready to pay more due to all costs rising but I expected a much better meal than what I received. The flavor was also disappointing, both the sandwich and the Au Jus didn't have much flavor at all. I guess we will have to find a new favorite restaurant... read more

Went to the Gas House on a Saturday afternoon and noticed the cook walking through the dining room with a 9mm in his waistband. Not even in a holster. What reason is there to be "strapped?" Are they expecting a shootout? I spoke to the owner, Ben Hall, who doesn't have a problem with it. I won't go to any Hall's restaurant ever again? It's at the ideal location downtown right on the river. Decades ago it was an old gas house (duh). Now the building houses the Gas House restaurant (downstairs) and the Japanese restaurant (upstairs). They have great (and numerous) lunch specials. Just came back from another (#3) disaster lunch experience at Hall's Gas House. This time they ruined gumbo. My assumption when reading on the menu: "New Orleans gumbo with a scoop of mashed potatoes and garlic toast" was a bowl of gumbo with a side of potatoes plus some garlic bread. How was I supposed to know it meant it would all be in one bowl together? What soup have you every ordered came as a bowl of mashed potatoes with soup poured over it???  Then shove garlic toast into it. I managed to eat a bit of the gumbo but the cold mashed potatoes cooled the soup so fast, even that became inedible. I have since looked it up and found that, yes there are recipes out there that serve it this way, but in all my visits to New Orleans I NEVER was served my gumbo that way. I'm now moved to write this because I'm disappointed every time friends pick this place. Last time it was chewy, super-well-done filet mignon sliders, ugh. Before that, it was the worst grilled cheese sandwich ever. Prior to that it was a patty melt. I'd had their patty melt previously at their southwest restaurant and it was wonderful, perfect. Tried it at Gas House and it was a ball of meat in the center of the two pieces of bread instead of spread out over the rye. I can't comment on the food. I'd ordered something new and didn't care for it. My husband and a friend ordered the gumbo (this is usual) and both said it wasn't very good. My chief concern was the service. We sat in the bar and the server was less than thrilled either with us or the fact that she had to work that night. Overall it was a disappointing evening. While working in the downtown area of Fort Wayne I came across this place and decided to give it a try. The building this business is located in has two restaurants in it. A Japanese restaurant on the second floor while this businesses is located on the bottom floor. I was greeted by a nice older lady and a young lady upon my entering this business. At first I was going to place an order to go but I decided to stay and just eat there instead. After taking a look at the menu I decided to order the Burrito Americano Sliced chicken, lettuce, roasted corn and black beans, pico, feta, avocado, spicy mayo $12. Such a neat place! Love the decor...a little old rustic style was so cute. The 'window seat' looks like a must if you're a party of two. Our waitress was phenomenal. She was knowledgeable and helpful during our visit. Our order was taken quickly and food and drinks came out promptly. We didn't have to do a lot of waiting but we didn't feel rushed. The food was really good! We all got a steak of some kind for dinner. I went with the coffee crusted sirloin and Mac and cheese. It was delicious. Prices are a little high but well worth it. Parking was difficult but only due to the construction. Good note bread was great, and butter was good. Medium rare steak came out blue. The steak was also on a cajun mix that didn't go with the steak. They took it back to finish cooking it and burnt the seasoning. The sweet potato souffle has walnut thru out it, so beware. Mac and cheese were soupy. Asparagus couldn't cut stalks. Only could only eat the tops. Can't say I will ever be back here. Service was good she did her best to help. We popped in for a quick lunch after a meeting downtown. The breadsticks are a nice touch, buttery and warm. I had the chicken Cobb salad with blue cheese dressing. Crisp mixed greens with bacon, egg and a moist and juicy fried chicken breast. The flavors in the breading were great. The restaurant is in great shape and well maintained. We chose this restaurant for its extensive menu for our friends who treated us to a concert at a local venue. We made rather early reservations and when we got there, we were promptly seated. The restaurant is older, rustic and was beautiful on the interior. You could tell, that the establishment was used to having large numbers of patrons. We were then greeted by our waitress who promptly took our drink orders. We had Old Fashioned's and skipped appetizers as we were pretty hungry and knew we were all hankering for beef! My husband had the coffee rubbed ribeye and the rest of us had prime rib. The old fashioned's were good--very drinkable, not the best we have had but decent, nonetheless. Our dinners arrived shortly thereafter and each was cooked to order. My friends ordered the gumbo and after a couple of bites, apologized and sent it back because it was tasteless. My prime rib was tender and tasty. Nothing to write home about, but lightly seasoned and cooked the way I liked it. I was curious as to my husband's steak, which had the coffee rub on it. We make this at home using Bobby Flay's recipe and love it! So we were curious as to how theirs would be. My husband said that it was "good " but not like the BF recipe that we use. The only disappointment was the creamed spinach that my husband had. It was barely creamy and was tasteless. For all of us, it was a satisfying meal--just was hoping to be wowed. So 3 stars it is! We have some incredible steak houses in Cincinnati so our expectations are always high. The filet Oscar did not disappoint. Cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. Our server had great suggestions. We also had the black & bleu which was great but not as good as the Oscar. Wonderful wine selection and GET THE BREAD. I know it sounds weird but the bread is prob the best I've had at a restaurant. We left with to go boxes and thoroughly enjoyed our time. Mixed reviews in our dinner party of 5. NY steak and Jambalaya Risotto were hits!!! The misses were the Gumbo! Omg based on that alone I would not come back. Terrible!!! Shouldve never been served! But the waitress warned me before hand that many dont like it. I was not thinking and ignored here not so subtle hint. Non edible. Resembled mush and a nasty dull brown color. No shrimp, no chicken. 2-3 slices of sausage and 3-4 day old rice. Could smell the roux before tasting. It smelled burnt. Well it tastes worse than it smelled. Crab cakes were mediocre at best. Mushy and lacked crab chunks. The Chicken wings were poorly cooked. My Gulf Shrimp blackened were so so. The Brussels however were delicious. The German Chocolate cake was dry/old and the frosting was not bad. Others has Yellowfin Tuna cooked med-rare blackened. Said lacked taste and wouldnt order again. Solid and respectable Fort Wayne Original... I've been to DH's too many times to count in college and since moving back to FW, and realized I've never done a Yelp review (hence why I forgot to take pics)... In usual fashion, Don Hall's didn't disappoint with the meal. As always, there was great service, good steak dinners, and laid back atmosphere. I did notice the prices rose "a lot" since the last time we visited, which is starting to get annoying with restaurants continually jacking up prices ($200 for 4 people; dinners only, no dessert is questionable at best) - At some point restaurants need to realize they're pricing themselves out of business (yeah, I get it... The economy is crap, but there still are FW restaurants that offer fair and reasonable prices to customers (China Palace, Blue Bird Cafe, etc.), whilst giving enormous portions, so I don't buy the economy excuse anymore. PS - If you don't like the current economy, don't keep Biden in office come November... Food for thought, people. Nonetheless, DH's does offer a good meal and is always consistent. read more

I came by the Old Gas House during the holidays with family. The place was really busy and even though the parking lot is pretty big, I wasn't able to find a spot to park. I had to park in a neighboring lot. Reservations were easy to make through OpenTable. We ordered the fried Brussel sprouts as an appetizer. Those were really good. I liked the chili-maple glaze. I also ordered a salad. The lettuce in salad was old and turning red at the ends. I was also surprised to see they were using plastic condiment cups for sauces. It just seemed out of place at such a nice restaurant. Everyone in my party ordered an 8 oz filet, but oddly mine was sustainably smaller at about 4 oz. So, perhaps consistency isn't their strength. I'm actually kind of surprised they served it since it was glaringly obvious. However, the flavor was good. It just should have been half the price if it was half the meat. read more

Definitely a really cool restaurant to go to cooks are clearly highly trained and basically put on a show for you while preparing the various things. Never been to a restaurant where they cook the food right in front of you before it's definitely neat to see. Cooks also joke around with you in a fun actually amusing way. Not the annoying way that some servers do in a effort to get more tips or whatever. This is my first time coming to Don Hall's old gas house, and I really wanted to enjoy the experience, but unfortunately, the meal sort of fell flat. The food may be better if you order off the regular menu based on the pictures however, we came during savour Fort Wayne restaurant week. I know that Don Hall is a institution in Fort Wayne and I've been to other locations before. most of those were more of the casual restaurants or diner feel. This is a little bit more upscale but still casual. I started my meal off with the spinach artichoke dip. They had a unique take on tortilla chips. Initially, I did not like the Tortilla chips because they reminded me of a taco shell broken in half. However, I think they make these by deep, frying tortilla skins. After a few bites, it was actually pretty tasty compared to normal tortilla chips. The highlight of the meal would definitely be the warm bread brought out for my main course. I selected the fillet mignon as my main meal expecting the wonderful picturesque tender filet sitting next to a bed of mash potatoes. They don't mention in the description that it would be sliced for you. Just as the other reviewer had mentioned, there was so much pepper in this dish that my mouth was on fire. I would much rather take my filet mignon uncut and served a traditional way. The dessert was a slice of cheesecake as you see from the picture unceremoniously plopped on its side with out any other fixens to make it look better. I may give this restaurant another try in the future ordering off the regular menu, for $50 I can say that I had a better meal at Eddie Merlots.. read more

This place is weird and old but in a way that lends itself to an interesting dining experience. It strikes me as a restaurant that used to be really nice but has been on autopilot for a while. Probably why it feels so quaint. The Jambalaya Risotto was not as good as it is hyped to be but the steak was fantastic. I think our server was new but he was really friendly and helped may the visit enjoyable. Treat yourself to the best/worst drink not on the menu: Purple Haze. Monday night, service was not good. Either under staffed or just very disorganized by management. Sitting for over an hour before soups and salads delivered. Most tables around us complaining about service. When food was delivered 1/2 of the 10 folks was luke warm. 1 of our filets was tough. Soup and salad showed up after food. Just overall wtf experience. Been to Gas House many times in previous years this time totally embarrassed me in front of a very important customer. My husband and I were looking for a restaurant in the area to meet our family halfway for dinner, and wow did we pick well. The building was so cool and had its own parking lot. The staff was really friendly and the menu offered something for everyone. At our table we had the blackened ahi tuna, Steak and jambalaya. For sides we had salads, bread, sweet potatoes, hash browns, creamed spinach, asparagus and mushrooms. Everyone was so pleased with their dishes...not a single negative thing to note. The entrees were priced fantastically (without drinks, two entrees would have been $50 which includes 2 sides each). I can't say enough good things about this restaurant.
