If I would agree, Glenda would eat Mexican food 3 meals a day, 7 days a week. While we were at Caddo lake for Glenda's birthday, we drove into Jefferson for birthday lunch. What did we pick? Mexican of course. Don Juan's was really busy with locals and workers. Chips and salsa and drinks came out immediately. Really good salsa. I got the usual lunch special, enchilada and crispy taco. Very good. Glenda went for the smothered chicken, which looked fantastic. She loved it, and of course I stole a few bites. Staff was really friendly and the prices were great. We moved here a few weeks ago and got an office in Jefferson. We intend to try everything in town at some point. This one is for the recent Don Juan visit yesterday. The service is faster than you can imagine. There was no lull between appetizers. The food was the best of the best. I usually look at the beans and rice as filler, but I finished all of that as well. Even the sides were worth bragging about! It's not fast food, but it's food fast. More importantly, it is great food fast! There is no doubt we will be visiting here again. read more

As a Mexican who was born and raised on the Southside of San Antonio, I find that there are a few tip offs to a really bad Mexican restaurant, and a really good Mexican restaurant. First and foremost, you're looking someone's abuelita to be making the tortillas, cooking in the kitchen, or ordering people around. You want your old tio behind the counter, guarding the cash register and nodding happily at you while he makes change for your $10. You really want your cousins Juanito to bus the table, and Rosa to be your server, not because it's the family restaurant, but because their parents are so strict and so well-respected by their own children, that working in the restaurant is a given. This restaurant had no such thing. There were none of my people occupying the booths. The fajitas sizzled properly, but there was no ventilation in the kitchen or the restaurant, so all the smoke collected in the main eating area, causing you to fan it away while you searched your foggy table for your weak sweet tea. The bus boy was rude, rude, rude and at one point, even told two little girls and their grandmother to "hurry up and move... go on, get over there." Our waitress was blonde and very, very kind, but couldn't understand me when I ordered some guacamole. I'm so sorry that "whack - a - mole - eee" does not roll as easily off my tongue as the proper pronunciation, but I managed to get my point across when I dumbed it down a bit. The food, Good Lord, the food was awful. The enchiladas were spicy, which they are never supposed to be. The beans had some odd crunch that preceded their atrocious aftertaste, and the puffy taco... well, that was a giant crispy cornchip with some awful tasting ground beef in it. I wound up giving 80% of my meal to my son, who is 13 and eats like a farm animal, thank GOD. I gave the restaurant two stars for the following GOOD reasons: 1. The young girl kept my tea filled up. 2. The apple pie with ice cream was delish. Overall, stay away from this place. It's not real Mexican food, nor Tex Mex. This was where me and my wife ate with a group of folks out in a small town in the forbidding and suspicious piney woods of East Texas off Hwy 59. HUGELY disappointed. But hey, the only Hispanics that live in that part of the state are usually migrant workers from Mexico. The food I ordered had a cheese enchilada, beef enchilada, puffy taco, refried beans, and rice. The cheese enchilada was more like a store bought flour tortilla stuffed with process cheese spread and a canned movie theater cheese sauce poured over it, the puffy taco was like a huge chip with dried ground beef in it, the refried beans tasted like cumin, and the beef enchilada had a hot and spicy taste to it. BUT, the dessert I ordered was fried cheesecake, which was pretty good. Even more strange, the locals who ate there seemed to be enjoying every bite of it. Whereas if many of them ate at the average restaurant in San Antonio that served fried chicken or chicken fried steak, they'd probably hate it too. read more

I'm a Californian who has eaten at every roach coach and taqueria up and down the state. I know good Mexican food. I'm not a Midwestern who thinks he knows good Mexican food. Usually Mexican food outside of California is crap I wouldn't feed to a dog I didn't like. Been here several times now. Service is always great. I've only had one dish and have yet to get another because it's so good. I get the pork street tacos. They are fairly close to tacos you would get down in Baja (spent lots of time down there). Quality and flavor are both really good. What impresses me most, is most the time, rice and beans are an afterthought that no place puts anytime into perfecting. This place cooks it amazing, texture and flavor both pop in your mouth, very impressed. I can't vouch for any other dishes, but the street tacos are bomb. Also, at the cash register they have some sort of candied pecans that are super yummy. Highly recommend buying them on your way out. Overall I'm glad this place is here and I will be visiting frequently, Mexican is my favorite and this place does a really good job. read more

I've been here a couple of times on my trips to visit my friends in Jefferson TX. There is nothing overly exciting about this place other than the fact that they serve some strong margarita's. On my most recent visit I had my two kids with me and I got the chicken flauta's, and my two kids got the chicken nugget kids meals. I had a margarita .......in a Styrofoam cup, LOL. I did not notice until the next night when I returned home from my travels and was sitting down to pay some bills that I was charged 3 times for my meal. I saw a reversal a few days later, but it sure would have been nice if my waitress would have notified me of her mistake. I didn't call the restaurant and make a fuss. I just waited a few days to see if it would fix itself with my bank, and it did. read more

My husband and I made the 14 hour drive from our home in Georgia to Jefferson, Texas to see some family. On the night of our arrival, we met some family here for dinner. This is apparently a common spot for them to dine. The service was good. Everyone was friendly, quick, alert, and everyone seemed to know one another. My husband and I split a large quesadilla and we ate it pretty fast. We both thought it was wonderful, but my husband was up all night rather sick. Luckily, I didn't get sick, but I ate my quesadilla plain while he added a bunch of condoments. I would give this place another try. Don Juan's! I'll start by setting the scene. My lady and I walk in at 5:00pm. There are two tables of two people each. Clearly rush hour in Jefferson, TX. A waitress/hostess? glances at us twice by the entrance. Understood. It's slammed, folks. After a few minutes we are seated. One party leaves. Now there are 4 people, three waiters, and someone in the kitchen mixing guacamole in a paint bucket. Yeah, a paint bucket. We do get our food rather quickly, and it's not bad. Not great, not horrendous, decent. My puff taco was as stale as Wrangler jeans and white tennies. We saw our waiter twice. Here's your drinks, here's your food. Eventually I got up and found out we pay up front. A lady with a walker was slowly stumping her way through the front door. I should have warned her. read more

Save your time and save your money. Lacking in atmosphere, flavor, and good wait staff. The old and dingy decor should have been a heads up that there is not much pride put into the business. We walked in and 3 or 4 young ladies were standing around and slightly confused as to who should seat us. The cilantro sauce tasted like marinara sauce. When I asked for the green sauce, I was curtly told they don't do that anymore. My avocado enchiladas arrived and I realized I probably should have ordered the frozen chicken nuggets that my son did. If you're put off by old fixtures, a general rundown appearance and an intermittent ventilation system, skip Don Juan's in Jefferson. We had doubts from past reviews, the old menus and the exhausted springs in our banquette. However, what we wanted was a moderately priced, tasty Mexican lunch with prompt service. That we got. My two-enchilada plate was quick and hot. As others have noted, the avocado enchilada is very nice. A chimichanga plate was good, too. The atmosphere lacks atmosphere, especially when smoke has nowhere to go. But if you care more about food than ambiance, it's not going to be a disaster. read more

I ate at this restaurant with my husband and 3 children. We started off with appetizers. The children enjoyed the queso with chips. My husband enjoyed the stuffed jalapenos very much as well. We ordered fajitas for everyone. The service was fast and our waitress checked on us often. Overall, the food was great and the prices were even better. The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere has a home-feel to it. We enjoyed it very much and would recommend this restaurant. read more

Traveling with a group of 18 people, we stopped at Don Juan's on our way to see some historical home in Jefferson. We were seated in the room to the side covered in glass, and right away I noticed that there was a water puddle on the floor at the end of the building under some tables. The room was used to store extra tables and chairs. After we received our drinks, my wife opened her silver wear that was wrapped up in a paper napkin and sealed with a paper band. Baby roaches came running out of the napkin and my wife was not happy. I expect roaches out side in the dumpster, not in my silver wear. This event happened on 12/12/2015. read more

We ordered two dinners to go. When we got home (20 min away), discovered one order was cheese enchiladas (not chicken as ordered). My husband called and spoke to waitress that took order. She was rude and stated she took order exactly as she said. Then THE COOK OVERHEARD AND SAID HE GOT THE ORDER MESSED UP, IT WAS HIS FAULT. Then waitress said with mean ugly tone, "What do you want to do? Stay on phone until you get a free meal?" My husband said no thank you! Food was disappointment. Only thing good was chips and hot sauce. They have zero good customer service with low grade food they are selling. Been better off with can of chili, Fritos and cheese. First time here, trying something new outside of down town Jefferson. Unbelievable, this place on the outskirts of down town has excellent customer service. The avocado enchilada was not a great choice, mostly because of the torts and chicken cubes being cold, but at least the beans and rice were hot. It's not Mexican food unless the plates and food is hot. Is that just me and my silly ideas of a great plate, what happen to, " be careful, the plate is very hot", that's music to my ears. Good hot food. Also their house brand Anos Tequila is pretty good. Better than the other restaurant brands I've had. Customer service is really really good, very happy on the service. Several employees were attentive to their surroundings. If you want good service and food, I would eat here and not downtown Jefferson, oh, by the way, try the Outpost Downtown Jefferson, that's a very reasonable price plate of food. I'm a regular here, and have been to this restaurant at least a hundred times as I live nearby. The servers are always friendly, and even remember my order when I walk in! Very good flavor, and the place is always kept clean. Low prices. I always look forward to eating here. To those of you who left negative reviews claiming that it is not real Mexican food: Remember, it is tex mex! This means it has American influences as well! It's not supposed to be completely the same as traditional Mexican food. My only complaint is that lately the cheese in the enchiladas has not been melted, and I had to ask for it to be heated up more. Also, they sometimes add too many onions. However, this is a recent problem. I think they may have hired a new cook or something. In the past, their food has been perfect. I don't think this is worth deducting a star since this is just a minor problem that has developed just recently. In any case, definitely worth the visit. If you're in Jefferson, be sure to stop by. Also, they have little hard candies on the front desk! Grab one as you're walking out. They're a nice touch to the restaurant. read more
